Ms. Ballou writes an intriguing story of a woman with a tough choice—marry a tyrant and free her father of his gambling debts or find a human who’ll do the same job. I really felt like I was there on the planet with Tria and Luca, surrounded by the sumptuousness of the mating/selection ritual.

I liked Tria because even though she’s in a sticky situation, she only loses her pluck a few times and what woman can’t relate to that? Luca is an interesting hero because he’s got his sights set on Tria even though he’s never really seen her. He subjects himself to lots of humiliation which tears his ego to pieces, but it’s because he’s doing it for the chance to be the man she loves. Talk about dedication! I liked his unwavering desire for her too. Once he set his mind to making her his, I rooted for him to get his wish.
The sex in this story sizzled, but I thought it went a bit quickly. I wanted to see more sensuality, but it still scorched my fingers.
