Alex and her fae fiancé, Pook are on their way home to Niune where they intend to marry. Alex will then continue her studies and making her inventions while Pook will develop his painting skills. They have recently brought the Fae together to live in peace and after this Pook handed the Faerie King crown over to his brother and all is good.
Mermaids interrupt their journey and try to drown them, capsizing the boat and stranding them on the shores of an unknown land. They try to find their way home only to find the country is in the grip of plague.
Alex and Pook are fascinating characters as is the talking cat, Bug. Although Pook brought the Fae together and even sat on the throne for a very short time, he’s quite naive in both fae and the human world. Alex, with only the minutest amount of seelie in her, is a very practical young lady and she and Pook make a brilliant couple, complementing each other perfectly. Their companion on this journey, Bug, is pretty funny. He has the hunting and animal instincts of a cat, but can talk, although it’s definitely a catlike way of talking.
I did get confused at times as there was so much action and many minor characters who occasionally dominated the scenes. I’m still confused about how they travel from fae to human world. That aside, I enjoyed this book. It’s different from the usual tales of mermaids, elves and the like, different in a positive way. More like a fairy tale written for adults.
For those who like mystical worlds this is one you should read as it has a distinct way of taking the reader into the story and holding them there.
