Nick Howard has written a funny and, at times, ridiculous version of the classic Damsel in Distress fairy tale. But this is definitely not one for children. This is hot, and funny and sexy, and just a joy to read. The characters are all stereotypes of the classic tales: the self centered princess, the two knights, one the barbarian and one the civilized but spoiled rich boy.
Princess Lilly is the spoiled and self-centered royal. But as this story goes along, there is a hidden bit of her that comes to the surface, and she is as surprised by it as I was. I loved how she not only faced her situation with determined aloofness, but also was soon ‘suggesting’ to Sir Gawain other ‘punishments’ he might employ.
Sir Gawain is the rough but rich hero, handsome and determined to win Princess Lilly’s acceptance. He realizes that she wants what he offers, but has to follow the ‘rules’ concerning Kidnapping of Damsels and other bureaucratic nonsense. And when Sir Justin abducts the kidnapped Princess Lilly, Sir Gawain is up to the challenge.
I found this to be a humorous and delightful satire on fairy tales, with several hot and interesting twists and turns. There is a happy ever after here, but it is found only after much laughter and fun.
