I really liked meeting Lyssa and I agree she’s perfect for Beast, the hero. And he certainly did earn his label of hero. Lyssa is from the Dixie Reapers and I have read quite a few of those stories so it was a treat to see her have her own. She proved that she is a confident, strong woman who knows exactly how to deal with Prospects who aren’t up to snuff.

There is a level of violence that is to be expected in an MC romance. I sometimes find it unrealistic to believe that anyone headed ‘for a shallow grave’, won’t ever be missed and that it’s that easy to get rid of Prospects with criminal intent, or even villains. Somehow, that Old West mentality can’t survive under the scrutiny of the 21st Century. I think that’s the only over-the-top, unrealistic element in the story. I’m not saying I don’t like it – it’s kind of nice to think that truly evil and twisted individuals get their permanent comeuppance, and the guys in white hats (or are they dusty gray?) are so clever about it, they never get caught and everyone they love is now safe because of their preemptive, proactive actions. Sometimes, you have to get a little violent to get the street cred that makes people think twice. Fortunately, Lyssa’s grandfather has that level of respect in spades.

Beast was a fun read, provided great escapism, included a wonderful romance between Lyssa and Beast, and I was thoroughly entertained from beginning to end. For those that prefer volcanic bedroom action, be prepared to grab the ice tray because Ms. Wylde delivered.

The zany and crazy starts off really fast in this novel. She has no idea what she’s in for.

One very unusual, but charming and eccentric detail is how the inner wolf-speak is so different than an adult’s articulated speech. It’s almost childlike, you know, innocent, simple, repetitive and very, very enthusiastic. The author used that technique to good effect whenever the hero was in his furry form.

Another cute aspect of the novel is the building community. Lila meets the main characters of her neighborhood at warp speed, from trespassing, to bear repair, fairy bread and repairs of doors busted of their hinges. Odd hours, odd conversations and Oz loving the fact that Lila is not only capable, but seemingly unflappable, calm and has a gun and not afraid to us it. The teenagers find her cool, little Sally trusts Lila and the adults slowly do the same. I like Lila’s personality, and Oz’s reaction to her is charming and cute. True, he can be formidable, he is a werewolf after all, but when it comes to the heroine, he’s a handsome, well-dressed lovable marshmallow.

Speaking of Sally; she’s a pivotal secondary character that is integral to the plot, mystery and pace of the story. I enjoyed how I was introduced to her, how she won the hearts of all the other characters and how helping her, helped solve a much bigger and serious plot thread.

I startled my hubby so bad when I barked out a huge HA! at the part with the shorty robe. Then I snickered. Those two sentences in that scene totally tickled my funny bone. So, yes, there is a smorgasbord of reasons to smile during this novel, so even though the fires, drama and a bit of suspense is to be taken seriously, the author managed to keep the overall feeling of the novel, upbeat.

There are truly too many points, fun parts, interesting character interactions, dialogue and surprises to do justice in explaining how much I enjoyed the story. There were a few language choices that I personally cringed at, but take them out of the picture, and A Wolf After My Own Heart is a perfect MaryJanice Davidson read. I enjoyed the first book in the series, but I like this one a lot better.

Nash is bewildered by the unconventional woman who keeps turning up on his doorstep. I am exceedingly glad that Ms. Galen chose Nash as the next hero to find his happy ever after. When he shot (wounded only) one of his good friends in the last book, I just knew he was a man that needed saving. What happened to him was horrible indeed, but what he’s chosen to do with his life is a tragedy. If anyone needed an intervention, it was Nash Pope. To say his ‘rescuer’ was unconventional is an understatement. However, Rowden was the perfect choice. He didn’t scare easily and was committed to his friendship with the hero, even though said hero threatens to shoot him. From the first chapter I’d come to the conclusion that the unusual and unexpected were the very things that could jumpstart Nash into living again. How he came upon Prudence and what she was singing not only got the hero’s attention, but mine too. The heroine is not typical or boring, which means she fit the bill perfectly. Prudence was a delight, fun to watch and she truly livened up the storyline.

Prudence wasn’t all sunshine and bawdy tunes – she has her own issues, ones that made me feel strongly that I wanted her to find happiness too. I wanted her to be wanted for herself and I wanted that spark of life within her to flourish. Well, I later found out that the heroine has a bit too much spark, if you get my drift. Yes, she’s sweet, and her personality plays off well against the grumpy hero, but she has a secret. Personally, I think the author was genius. It was a kind of role reversal – she’s not exactly what I expected but I can tell you, Nash ends up being so intrigued by her, even though he tries really hard not to be, that he just can’t help himself. I think the push/pull of their friendship and relationship was the best part of the story. I enjoyed watching it grow and I was definitely entertained by Nash’s inability to resist Prudence. I also was happy to see that the heroine was a really wonderful plot mover – she motivated some important secondary characters to get involved with Nash’s life, whether he liked it or not. The results were storybook perfect. And fun. And humorous at times. There were SO many scenes that made me smile and grin.

Mrs. Northgate’s role is as an important secondary character. She helps Prudence grow in confidence and skill. She also plays a vital role in the drama and serious scenes that occur later in the book. I like how the author portrayed Mrs. Northgate’s personality. She ended up as being one of my favorites, after Nash and Prudence of course. There are others but I won’t mention them. I’ll let readers decide who their favorites are. Oh, wait, there’s Clopdon. Okay, his addition to the story made me grin a lot too. And giggle.

There’s quite a bit of symbolism in the story too. For instance, peacocks. Now that I think back on those scenes I can clearly state that Ms. Galen not only has a way of creating a romance story worth reading, but in this book especially, she created a romantic feeling, a mystical, optimistic, sigh-worthy ambiance that fed into the feel-good emotion I felt while heading for the very satisfying and swoon-worthy happy-ever-after ending.

I know I’m being gushy about this book. I really enjoyed myself. It’s not all fun and lightheartedness though. There is a bit of villainy aimed at Prudence so that created drama, intensity and suspense. Then there is the threat that Nash might end up in an asylum. It’s a race against time to convince everyone that he can be saved. So many details, so many other aspects to this novel, it’s hard to avoid spoilers. This book is chock full of good stuff.

I’ll end my review here. I could go on and on because Ms. Galen packed a lot of depth and details within this book’s pages. Sweet Rogue of Mine is an excellent read, a great addition to the series and it’s going on my keeper shelf.

He’s noble, honorable to the nth degree and is out of his depths when dealing with the heroine. The plot is basically Charlotte wearing down Will enough for him to look beyond the reasons for his nightmares, understandable as the case may be, and see that he does have a future, and that future includes both of them together. It takes the whole book with quite a few dramatic twists and fine secondary characters to get him to see the light.

Hugh is a secondary character that plays a role in the plot conflict. At first he seems like a nice, harmless yet earnest suitor. In the end, he’s turns out to be quite stupid. I’m totally serious. I think about his character and I roll my eyes. Still, as a plot mover and shaker, he did his job.

I enjoyed the dialogue, the descriptions, the relationship between Charlotte and her family, and even Will with his own family. Both protagonists come from loving households and the author did a wonderful job of sharing that with her readers.

I think the most well-written of scenes, where the author described it so perfectly, I could visualize the exchange, is when Jacob’s “stare was like a magnet”. I actually thought Will’s reaction to the 4-yr. old rather hilarious. It was also endearing in a way, completely charming.

I’m very satisfied with the happy ever after ending, and the epilogue was awesome. The part about her drawing brought forth a chuckle – a wheelbarrow – too cute! Also, I never in a million years would have guessed who George was. What a thrilling way to induce a reader’s curiosity into looking forward to the next book in the series.

All in all, In Search of Scandal was a fine read, provided great entertainment and was a fun romance story. Definitely worth checking out.

Through it all is Lord Merryn. Mysterious Merryn. I couldn’t figure him out. I believe that stems from the fact that this tale is strictly told from Gwedneline’s point of view only. I had to garner whatever clues I could from his reactions to things people told him, or how he always seemed to be there, sooner or later, when the heroine needed him the most.

I couldn’t judge their attraction by passion because this was a truly sweet story. The focus was definitely on the heroine, and she eventually figures out her feelings but it’s all because of their interactions, their growing relationship as the story went on, and what the hero and heroine learned about each other throughout the novel. I wasn’t exactly confident of their growing affections being real, certainly not from the vantage point of the hero. He was most proper. Powerful to be sure, but proper, so I have to say that I think this story played out within the strictures of the society of the period. At times the pace seemed slow, bogged down by the details of daily living, then it would speed up for a while, keeping those pages flipping, until it didn’t. Completing the book wasn’t a hardship by any means; I enjoyed Gwendeline’s stubborn refusal to accept what she was told because she intuited there was more to it – and she was right. The wrap up chapter was both exciting, dramatic and brought a happy ever after closure that seemed fitting for Lord Merryn and Gwendeline.

Earl to the Rescue was a nice story filled with adventures and surprises, a sweet romance and well worth reading.

The breathless anticipation, the yearning and the joys of discovering they are more than physically compatible – it’s off the charts fantastic. Yes, the bedroom door is open but it’s not described like a reader is standing over them, giving a narration of details. No, I found just enough to be happy they had such wonderful satisfying sparks between them. I was happy that they were happy.

The conflict is basic. Can she get beyond her loss and grab the promise of a future filled with love? Can Ethan trust that their budding relationship is strong enough to trust her with his secrets? That what he feels is real and could it survive long distances and separation? Do they each feel for each other what they think they feel for the other? Such basic, human questions that if answered correctly can lead to a happiness only found in movies.

I should give warning – there are tears. Not mine though. No. The characters experience a catharsis or two and with emotions that passionate and deep, tears are a release and part of the healing.

I didn’t get all the movie lines in the book but I totally got the Horatio Alger reference. It was quite clever of the author; being able to weave quotes throughout the dialogue as part of the dialogue. It was fun.

The story wraps up with not only an HEA for Evie but for Danny too. I am enchanted with how upbeat, positive, romantic and tender this novel is and heartily recommend this book to anyone looking for a well told, feel-good romance.

This story is a mixed bag. It has quirky humor, a dysfunctional family, incredible character growth and a complicated romance. Combine all those elements and a reader is in for an entertaining and interesting read.

Love is a Filing Cabinet is told in third person POV from the perspective of Minn, the heroine. The first chapter sets up the romance and it seems like a fait accompli. It’s not. Minn’s sister, Conn, is a classic diversion – the sister who has it all, men adore her, want to please her and everything comes up roses. Conn is flighty, breezy and thinks nothing of raiding Minn’s closet on a whim. Minn is a fixer and tolerates her sister. She also tolerates her father and mother, from a long distance. But, things are not quite as they seem. I think that’s what kept surprising me about this novel. Because I saw it only from the heroine’s point of view, everything she shared with a reader made perfect sense. So, that means I was annoyed with Conn, I wasn’t a fan of her parents, and the hero, Ford, I was never sure he was actually the hero; seemed a nice guy who had great potential, but he fell under the influence of Conn. So, how could he really be the hero? I did say it was a complicated romance, right?

Conn, Minn’s sister, who I was annoyed with, redeemed herself with her unexpected action, choices and revelations. It totally threw the heroine for a loop and started the process of self-reflection. It began with her sister, but it quickly affected Minn’s parents, the hippie protesters. It affected Ford in surprising ways too.

Minn is under the impression that she’s the only sane, organized, responsible and ‘adult’ person in the room. It’s the dialogue between all major characters that sheds light on a concept that Minn wouldn’t have guessed in a hundred years. Yes, Conn does grow as a character, but I think it’s Minn that needed the greatest attitude adjustment. Some of it was healing, some caused pain and some led her on a path to discover her own truths.

I admit that I had a hard time understanding the whys and ways of Minn for a part of the book. Her stress levels were through the roof and she has these mantras from an aunt that seem to allow her to be a victim, to be taken advantage of and it seemed to me she didn’t have much of a backbone, even if she was a super organizer. The resentment percolating inside was kind of toxic. Because of that, I wasn’t sure if I actually liked her. I mean she had her cute moments and I liked the chemistry between her and Ford, but I didn’t think she was a truly happy person. Then came the scene where she got lost, and I believe that was the pivot point. Her internal dialogue showed me that she was finally waking up to possibilities. The tone of the story changed and I liked it more and more.

The scheme that they all came up with surprised me. In fact, I was clueless. When the actual goal and intent was revealed, I was most impressed and it was a definite fist-bump moment. There is a very brief sub-romance that played a role in Minn and Ford’s relationship and I was actually relieved it came about.

Love is a Filing Cabinet affected my emotions. The story is definitely engaging because they were all over the place. Ultimately there is a well-rounded, satisfying and altogether happy, happy ever after that tied everything up with a big joyful bow. The novel includes some unique and fascinating imaginative scenes that made me smile. Ford really is a genius. And yes, he ended up being the perfect hero for this book.

Talk about a heroine being tested by fire. A reader meets Elysande while she’s in the middle of a life and death situation. Right away, this reader wanted the heroine to be safe, to find justice for her family, and I wanted her to stop hurting, both physically and emotionally. The author wanted to make sure that I was vested in the fate of Elysande, and Ms. Sands was 100% effective in creating that link.

I remember the last story, when Rory’s brother, Conran, was mistaken for him. Although there was a substantial plot, the sense of humor, adventure and romance was quicker to happen and grins were more prevalent. Highland Treasure has an extra serious bent because more than Elysande’s life is on the line and she feels that pressure every step of the way, in every place that they stay. Rory starts off doing what’s right but the quest quickly turns personal. I enjoyed watching their friendship and relationship grow. The moment both realize they have red hot chemistry happens in the absolute darkness of night in a forest, alone, when Rory has to apply more pain salve on Elysande’s bruises. That scene was the tipping point and I knew right then that not only were they going to be great together, but once that genie is out of the bottle, there’s no putting it back in. It gets quite hot. Even during those times, there were elements of humor and embarrassing instances which made for fun reading.

No story written by Ms. Sands is heavy-handed in dark plots – there are moments to spice it up, to provide motivational conflict and drama, but they are short lived, placed perfectly and give the right level of backdrop to showcase the strengths of both hero and heroine. This novel is no different. It’s entertaining, interesting and at times, quite adventurous – in short, a great read.

I felt so bad about one of the bad guys. I mean, I really hope that he can be redeemed because I truly felt that he was a victim too and shouldn’t be written off. I hope Ms. Sands lets readers know the full skinny when she’s ready. As it is, he served his diabolical purpose in this book.

Highland Treasure ended with a truly surprising and broad-scoped happy ever after that was over-the-top wonderful and satisfying. I enjoyed it so much and was left with a happy glow. There was so much joy it was almost perfect. There is one thing the author didn’t do and that was answer the biggest question about Elysande!! How could Ms. Sands not do an epilogue of the epilogue!! I hope to find out the answer in the next book. There WILL be a next book in the Highland Brides series, right?

My primary focus has always been taking care of were-babies in the interspecies foster care system. There were interesting secondary characters and a plot that was heavy, serious and yet, by virtue of the author’s writing style I remembered so well, never overwhelmed the book in darkness. It could have but I’m glad the author writes the way she does because I enjoyed the story from beginning to end. The good guys persevered, eventually, and the bad guys – well, the bad guys met the heroine, and wow, did she make an impression.

Annette is a woman who believes in saving kids. She gives her whole heart into her job and really cares for the kids she’s in charge of. She’s a defender, advocate and a wonderful character to get to know. She has a few quirks that lend humor and cuteness. Her partner against crime turns out to be a guy who should buy stocks in a maple syrup company. I like the sweet stuff but the hero beats anyone I know in that arena. Plus, the color red in any confectionary goodness makes an interesting entry into the relationship between Annette and David. I thought it clever, adorable and unique.

There was action because the bad guys were trying to stop Annette, David and their helpers from finding out what was actually going on and who was involved. The fight scenes were brief but well written and effective. There were bruises, contusions, torn clothing, near misses and fisticuffs. There were also wonderful acts of heroism, caring, friendship, family bonds and a stumbly, bumbly, relationship turning into love. The happily ever after was cute, satisfying and well done. I liked meeting Annette and David and I truly look forward to finding which secondary character in Annette’s ‘family’ will take center stage. I recommend Bears Behaving Badly for readers who enjoy madcap, criminal capers with an HEA to tie it up with a delightful happy bow.

I’ve read many a book by Lynsay Sands but I’ve never listened to one in audio format before. I think I’m in love with the book, the hero, and the narrator.

I have enjoyed Ms. Sands’ Scottish heroes in the past because they are usually so hunky, heroic and sexy. The heroines can be plucky, strong, and engaging and are always a good fit for the hero. Until now, I’ve only read them in my head and I have no gift for accents. Bring on the narrator in the audio book, Kieron Elliot, and my book experience just shot to new heights. He showed his honor early on when he came upon a young man being beaten. Not for a second did he hesitate to come to the lad’s rescue even though he was outnumbered. The camaraderie between the two as they traveled to deliver the mysterious scroll the lad had in his care was clear, comfortable and sweet. That complacent feeling was yanked right out of the story when the hero came across Jo clearing the dust of travel off in a river. The narrator brought to life Cam’s astonishment when he discovered Jo was a Joan. I listened to that part twice, grinning from ear to ear both times.

At that moment I realized that Joan was no ordinary heroine. She had qualities that made “Jo” earn Cam’s respect, but as a woman? It was doubly impressive because Joan wasn’t a fainter, she’s a doer. I have to respect a person who doesn’t let life hold her down after being delivered devastating news – the loss of her mom and the place she called home. I appreciated that Cam came to the same conclusion – being a woman did not change the fact that she earned his respect. But, once he knew that he was a she, that opened up a Pandora’s Box – they were traveling alone and the chemistry was starting to sizzle and pop. Romance readers know it’s only a matter of time.

Since this is an audio book, I want to share an observation. Some narrators fit the characters they’re reading, male or female. There are some male narrators whose voice simply doesn’t lend itself well to a higher pitched lady’s voice. Not so with Mr. Elliott. He brought Cam’s growly lower voice to life and did an effortless job of creating a convincing and ear pleasing voice for Joan.

Supposedly it should take about 10 hours to listen to the audio version of the book, but like Ms. Sands’ print novels, time flew as I lost myself within the story. A 384 page book would take me about 3.5 uninterrupted hours to read, so it couldn’t have taken me that much longer to listen, did it? I didn’t fast forward even once – it was ALL GREAT! That’s because the story was great. All the characters – from Joan’s aunt and uncle, Cam’s mom and dad, the ladies that were there to marry Cam … yes, there was quite the mix-up that made things interesting over all.

There was a bit of suspense too because someone is trying to harm Joan. I thought for sure I knew who it was. The mystery to solve is, why? Why would someone go to those lengths to get rid of her? And, how far was the villain willing to go? The answer surprised me.

I thought I was going to blush scarlet when the narrator started reading the bed scenes between Cam and Joan. It wasn’t as bad as I feared because I forgot how well Ms. Sands writes them. They serve a purpose and weren’t placed there just to titillate. So, I listened and blushed just a little.

To Marry a Scottish Laird had every element I enjoy in a well-written romance. A plot that kept my interest, parts that made me gasp and scenes that made me giggle and chortle. There were surprises aplenty with near misses as Joan survived the attempts to harm her. Best of all was the romance flourishing between the two of them and the happy ever after delivered with a wonderful closing scene in the epilogue. I strongly believe that Cam and Joan’s romance story is a perfect read in any format, audio or print and I credit that to the strong writing skills that Ms. Sands is known for. I’m a happy … listener.
