Bringing a live baby into the world is an incredible capability of humans, but a more impressive miracle starts about nine months before that. The number of steps and processes that must occur (or not occur) for conception to happen and for a fetus to grow is almost unbelievable.

Of the millions of sperm introduced into the vagina, roughly 5%–10% are actually “normal.” One in those 5%–10% has to then blindly travel— relying only on the fluid they’re swimming in and the changes in physical conditions around it—to make it all the way from the vagina, up the cervix, into the uterus, then up the correct fallopian tube to meet an egg that we hope is healthy and ready. That sperm then must have a healthy head so it can fuse with and break into that egg. Once inside, both cells need to merge their DNA, creating the DNA of a new living creature.

But they’re not done yet.

That egg needs enough energy to sustain this transaction and the five-to-six-day journey to the uterus.

So now you have an embryo (yay!). That embryo has to undergo cell division, cleaving that single zygote cell into sixteen cells. Each of those cells is compacted and forms different layers while hoping that the lining of the uterus is ready for it. That uterine lining also has to make changes to create a receptive landing pad. It sends out signals and changes the layout of the ground to make sure the embryo can attach properly. And don’t forget about the timing: it must be done within the proper “implantation”…

Book two in the Sin City Kilts series

Can two wild souls survive the storm?

Mira, a zoologist and secret cryptozoologist at Vegas Zoo, has observed an unusual wolf prowling the confines of the zoo and her own property. But her dream of discovering a new species and documenting her find brings her up against Vegas’ werewolf community when rumors of her discovery of this dangerous hybrid threaten to expose them.

Calan Creig, a Highland Heathen Wulver Enforcer and head of Worldwide Security for Lycans, is summoned to Vegas to investigate. Although Mira’s eager to study this Tasmanian wolf lookalike, thought extinct for almost a hundred years, Calan is convinced he’ll be able to distract her and put obstacles in her path to prevent the discovery from being widespread. A playboy, he enjoys women and looks forward to seeing what Vegas can offer him—only, what it brings him is Mira, his mate!

But the hybrid wolf craves Mira to strengthen his own bloodline and will stop at nothing to have her. Now Mira and Calan must work together to eliminate the threat of this renegade wolf…if they can find their way past their deep mistrust issues. It seems impossible, but with Mira’s life and all that Calan holds dear at stake, it’s the only hope left.

Calan

The night wind lashed the casement windows of Castle Creigbourne, driving rain against the tower’s glass. The din woke me from a battle I was winning, striking down the enemy with my mighty claymore that I’d named Slayer. They don’t accuse me of having an iron soul for nothing. I never give up, and danger’s my life’s blood, even in my dreams.

Stretching, then grimacing as the numerous cuts and bruises from my recent cage fight made themselves known, I checked the time. Five a.m. Early enough to avoid company. I treasured time alone, a rare commodity in the Creig clan.

My bleary vision was made worse by a pounding headache curtesy of a night spent in our local pub celebrating the Burryman and my earlier knockout victory of a worthy opponent. I rubbed my eyes, blinked and spied my cell phone lying by the bed, reminding me of the encrypted email I’d gotten last night.

Right. Today my attendance was requested at virtual council. More like demanded, but also to be expected as my clan’s enforcer and one of a select team of experts that composed the Worldwide Security for Lycans or WSL. The position was made for me…when I didn’t have a damn hangover. Well, a good run across the moors would clear my head of the remaining cobwebs.

With no thought to dress, I strode naked from the room and took the stairs leading to the outdoors two at a time, exiting from the back of the keep. The scent of heather and moss stirred my senses as the rain ceased and a rainbow appeared over a rise in the land. I transformed to my other nature, entering through the glimmering doorway in the dimension next door, then exiting the portal as wolf. That split-second moment in time when my energy shifted, then reformed, exposing my wild nature, never got old.

On my massive paws, I loped across the wet green fields of Eilean maddah-allaidh or Wolf Island, eager to patrol our vast holdings and check for any interloper or breach of security. No one who knew of our piece of off-the-beaten-path real estate took the chance of riling one of us, the Highland Heathen Clan born of Wulvers and Vikings and ancient warriors, but I still kept a sharp lookout for the unexpected.

Someone finding our shores and causing havoc could not, and would not, be tolerated. The freedom of our heritage needed to continue, and I would protect my clan and our secrets to my dying breath. It explained why I’d chosen to live my life on my own, not willing to allow another to suffer if it was cut short. Not that I intended that to happen, but in this world, shit happened.

Character Creation by Chad Musick – Guest Blog and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Chad Musick will be awarding a $10 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Character Creation
My characters range from deeply personal, as in my two books, to observational. In Not My Ruckus, even though the main character was a young girl, I drew heavily from my own life experiences and reactions to my early childhood trauma. In my second novel, From the Lighthouse, I captured my lived experience of being autistic, nonbinary, and having epilepsy. Imaginary Friends is the first book I’ve written that I did not draw on aspects of myself to create the characters. I instead drew from people I had known. I taught high school math for a semester, and Himitsu is an amalgamation of several of the boys who attended the school but were not in my class. Ivy is an amalgamation of my wife, a student who attended the school where I taught, and a dear friend of ours. I find it easiest to draw from my personality or the personalities of people I have known to create great characters. With Ivy, it was fun to ask my wife how she would react to a situation and then have Ivy do the opposite to create out of character moments. Even the imaginary friends’ personalities are a blend of people I have known with the exception of a few historical figures. For the historical figures, I used literary references to create their personalities and reactions, since they are being formed from the works in the library.

If the delivery had been a demonic bowling alley or a mermaid’s grotto, Ivy would have sent it away. She has standards, after all. But she can’t refuse a magical Library, especially when they’ve gone to the trouble of including a wheelchair ramp. They say that on the Internet nobody knows you’re a dog, but somebody knows fourteen-year-old Ivy is an orphan, that she sells her paper-writing services to lazy college students, and that her imaginary friends are unhappy being stuck in the mural on the wall of her Alaskan home.

Himitsu refuses the Library, becoming angry enough to attack the delivery people with his bamboo sword. They won’t tempt him with books, any more than his mother has been able to tempt him into leaving their apartment during the past two years. He has all he needs: video games, online forums, and his virtual girlfriend Moe. Well, almost all. His dad’s death has left a hole in him, which is why when he receives text messages saying the Library can bring back the dead, he changes his mind. Moe tries to warn him about the danger, but what does she know, anyway?

Now, having been lured into the Library and having foolishly brought their imaginary friends with them, Ivy and Himitsu find those friends are trapped. The teens have a choice: fulfill the Librarian’s odd and painful demands in hopes of rescuing their friends or go back alone to their small, boring lives, knowing they’ve failed the only ones who really believe in them.

All giraffes are named Janice, excepting a few heretics. The old guard, being traditionalists, are the most militant in asserting that this is the necessary state of affairs.

The Janice of our story, however, is not one of the old guard. He’s too young to be a veteran of the Nehming War, and to him the consequent Sophie massacre is something that happened to distant French relatives. Because of this, he is sometimes known to intimate that his name might, in fact, be Chanda.

Despite this obvious breach in social graces, he doesn’t consider himself to be a deviant. In fact, he thinks of himself as quite normal. Janice is anything but normal. For one thing, he’s a giraffe. We mustn’t neglect this observation. Giraffes are not normal. But let us leave that aside for a moment and pretend they are.

Humans, not being monstrosities except in aggregate, naturally regard involuntary baldness among the males as an unsightly defect. Bald men are likely to be regarded as degenerates. Some of them even become history teachers. Among boy giraffes, however, baldness of the ossicles—those little sticky-uppy bits on their heads—is a mark of honor gained by battering at other giraffes.

To his enduring shame, the tops of Janice’s ossicles are covered in thick, feathery hair. Not because he is cowardly (though he is) but because Janice has never met another giraffe. In fact, he’s never encountered a third dimension at all, being stuck in perpetual twilight in the paper jungle pasted to the wall of Ivy’s otherwise crappy little house.

Chad makes no secret of being epileptic, autistic, and arthritic, facts that inform how he approaches both science and the arts.

Lizzy has largely retreated from the world: she tends her adopted strays and goes to work, but she has forsaken lifelong pastimes and declines invitations from old friends. On the day she buries Happy, the abandoned basset hound she adopted years before, she learns a real estate developer is threatening the heart of her rural community—a tranquil pond and a relict stand of hemlocks. For Lizzy this is a magical place, hidden from the modern world.

Coaxed by an old friend to join a group fighting the development, Lizzy is reluctant—she wants to avoid both hope and him. But she realizes she can no longer keep the outside world at bay. As the battle over the development unfolds, Lizzy opens herself to two young neighbors who share her love of the natural environment—an awkward sixteen-year-old and an inquisitive ten-year-old. And as Happy’s elements return to the earth, buried memories find their way to the surface in increasingly curious ways.

Enjoy an Excerpt

Lizzy had wandered toward the pond herself that morning after a restless night. Her mind had been full of the day’s trip, which overall had been predictable and therefore frustrating. She took her usual route through the woods to the bluff. A bird called relentlessly—she recognized its song, but she couldn’t remember its name, even though Wes had told her so many times. She had never tried very hard to remember because its name was not important to her. She didn’t need to name the bird to be reassured by its call, to be reassured by knowing it was there and living the life it was supposed to live, to be reassured there was a world much bigger than herself. It was in knowing there was a world bigger than her own life that she typically found comfort, but this morning she was experiencing the other side: that she was too small to affect the course of events unfolding in her own backyard.

As Lizzy approached the bluff, she saw the sourwoods were in flower—racemes of dainty white urns were calling in the honeybees. She walked to the edge of the bluff and looked over the hemlocks standing firm on their perilous slope.

Even if she hadn’t known the hemlocks were relicts of another era, the bluff had always seemed an ancient place, a magical place, hidden from the modern world. An earthy scent emanated from the ground— humus and moss overlain with the sweet aromatic sheath of shed hemlock needles and branchlets. She loved the hemlocks—their form, their scent, their flat, dark green leaves.

Elvia and the Gift of Passion by Ruthy Ballard – Spotlight and Giveaway

Adventurous ten-year-old Elvia is sick of her dull-as-dishwater existence, suffocating under the stifling watch her overprotective parents. She longs for a different life, with more freedom and fun. But she gets more than she bargains for when she discovers an alarming family secret and is swept away on an adventure 64,000 light years from Earth. Tanzanian witch doctors, child-eating lions, and submarine exploration on a two-mooned planet enliven this science fiction fantasy adventure, the third in Ballard’s award-winning Tales by Moons-light series.

Enjoy an Exclusive Excerpt

It was on an otherwise ordinary Friday afternoon in summer, two weeks after her tenth birthday, that Elvia learned, with a thrill, that she was someone else.

Her mother’s carefully tended sunflowers— precisely pruned to four feet, and not a centimeter taller— peeked through the sunny western windows as Elvia eagerly sorted through the stack of mail that had just arrived. Her father’s work papers, organized in neat rows, sat on a desk in a far corner, a symbol of the carefully orchestrated life her parents liked to live. In Elvia’s dull-as-dishwater home, every day was the same—safe and predictable. There were rules: She could study the violin, but not play soccer. She could take a June class in jewelry-making, but not join her friends at Copper Creek Camp, where all the fun was. She could walk around town, but not ride a bike. She didn’t even have a bike! For a child who longed to roam the world, and maybe live on Mars one day, the list of forbidden pleasures was suffocating. There was only one way out of her dilemma, and, as she pawed through the letters, she hoped against hope that she’d find it.

The slender envelope, addressed to her, and her alone, was at the very bottom of the heap. Her hands trembled with excitement as she tore it open, sure it would explain why she had fiery red hair, while her parents both had mousy brown. It would expose how an adventuresome girl like her got saddled with parents who always hugged the safe shore, rarely taking her any further than the local Shop ’n Save for a “great deal” on paper towels.

The letter was from Quick Results, a DNA testing company operating out of somewhere in Kansas. A few weeks back, when she’d seen an ad online, she’d leapt at the chance. For just sixty dollars—her monthly allowance—she’d get confirmation of the truth that, to her, was obvious: She’d been switched at birth. Or perhaps she’d been kidnapped from her cradle and sold to Earl and Sally Hill, her parents, who were desperate for a baby after losing her older sister, Jane, to cancer, many years before. She didn’t ask herself why her orderly, rule-abiding father and mother would swing a heartless deal on the black market. Logic played no role in Elvia’s daydreams. It was the sense of adventure they brought her that mattered: the sweet promise that someone, somewhere, would rescue her from a life of crushing boredom.

Her award-winning science fantasy adventures lure children in with compelling characters and entertaining, twisty plots that incorporate science in fun, accessible ways.

The silent moon loomed over us as a steady reminder of Gemm’s last prophecy. Her words rang in my head again and again.

“On the full Teal Moon, one man will lay down his life for love.”

I gulped and squeezed my eyes shut, praying to the goddess above that she was wrong. I only had two weeks left to find a way to prevent that fate. It wasn’t fair. I had worked too hard to keep them both alive, and we had all sacrificed so much. Maybe if I had never picked either of them, then neither man would be doomed to this fate.

Tears pooled behind my eyes. “You won’t win,” I whispered up at the moon, but she only smiled down in return.

Following Chocolate’s tug, I lumbered through the tall grass toward the abandoned skyscrapers of Vayu. Trying to claw myself out of the fog, I contemplated Gemm’s other words for the hundredth time.

One of them became cursed and was trudging toward death.

I shook my head in frustration and shot a random burst of fire at one of the buildings. “No! I won’t let anyone die. I won’t.” Flames shot through a window, and glass shattered, cascading over the sidewalk.

Chocolate barked and tugged hard, her leash slipping from my hand as she darted into one of the shadowy buildings.

“Chocolate! Hey. Come back!” I sprinted over the fallen glass through the quiet streets. Too quiet.

When I reached the threshold of a door, a strange feeling warped my tattoos. I rolled the hem of my skirt down and stared at the gray tattoo on my hip, which now resembled a toxic mist. Shit.

Ten Things Most People Don’t Know About Benjamin X. Wretlind – Guest Blog and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Benjamin X. Wretlind will be awarding a $25 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Ten Things Most People Don’t Know About Me
This will be fun, hence the reason I selected the topic. Truth be told, not many things are known about me outside of my family, so here we go.

1. I speak Russian, French, Spanish, and Greek–all poorly. I took Russian and French in high school and even though that’s several decades ago, I still remember many of the phrases and how to find the bathroom (an important phrase to learn in any language!). I learned Spanish because of where I grew up (Phoenix) and time I spent in Honduras in the mid-1990s. Greek has always been a bucket list item, so I’ve been learning that for a few years now. One of these days I’ll get there.

2. I have four degrees: meteorology, adult instructional design, psychology, and organizational psychology. Surprisingly, I still use all four of them.

3. My middle name is a “second kid” marker. Xavier is intended to be either the first or second name of the second child in any generation. I have no idea why this is. As for the “first kid” name, it’s Emmanuel, and that tradition goes back several hundred years.

4. While the typical American mixed breed, I am mostly Swedish and French. My last name is Swedish and I can trace my ancestry back to the 1400s. There are several rumors about what the name really means and some story about a duke who gambled away his title, but I could never verify any of that.

5. I am allergic to cats but can’t live without one. Medicine is necessary.

6. There are only three books I have read more than twice (I’ve read many two times): The Neverending Story by Michael Ende, Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury and Mythago Wood by Robert Holdstock. All three of those books were some of my first buys at a place called B.Dalton in my local mall with allowance I saved up. With my new “allowance” I have sought out first editions of all three. I’m still working on Dandelion Wine, but I’ll get it eventually.

7. I have a collection of newspapers for notable events in my lifetime, starting with Nixon’s resignation in 1974. I stopped after most papers went online, but whenever I get the chance, I hit up auction sites and look for those I might be missing.

8. The goal of #7 was to use those papers as wall decorations for a coffee shop I wanted to someday open. I’m a fan of the old shops of the 1980s and 1990s, like Central Perk in Friends. I don’t think that will ever happen, but I will probably frame all those newspapers anyway.

9. If given the opportunity, I would gladly go to Mars to write about my adventures. I sent a note to Elon Musk volunteering but heard nothing. I’m probably way too old now, but if that was my last “thing” to do before passing on, I would still do it.

10. Finally, for forty-five years I was scared to death of any sort of power tool. I now have a woodshop with everything from a table saw to a lathe to a chainsaw. I do not know what happened to me to make such a dramatic shift in my phobias. If I ever figure it out, I’ll sell the rights to it.

Following the exodus from rising floodwaters, the surviving descendants of those who came to create a society on a planet far from Earth have struggled to rebuild within the remains of an ancient temple. Now, as disease and an unfamiliar environment threaten to destroy them yet again, everyone seems to have an opinion about what to do next.

Miriam and Tobias Page, newly married, believe there may be a possible home beyond a distant canyon. Their journey with a quarter of the population doesn’t start well and soon nature and their own humanity will conspire to end it all. Meanwhile, Miriam’s two cousins, Joel and Micah, have different ideas. Joel is convinced the best course of action is to return to the mountains they left to mine for the ore that would make a great return to Earth possible. Micah hopes to stay, learn all he can about the temple’s previous occupants, and prove both of them wrong. But soon, he and his new partner Patience realize that no option is truly safe.

As the transits of three different groups get underway, new dangers and surprises emerge from within the rainforests, mountains, and deserts of the planet…and one of those may have followed them from Earth. While a final home is a dream away, present nightmares must be dealt with first if any of them are going to survive.

“How many?” Moran asked.

“Four. Just up ahead.” Tobias tightened his grip on his weapon.
“Bethany is waiting for us.”

Moran stopped and watched as the caravan slowly edged toward the right, away from immediate danger. “Wish we had more to spare.”

“So do I.” Tobias took in a calming breath and let it out slowly. The nervousness in his stomach eased up. Miriam had taught him several techniques for dealing with fear, for calming his anxiety and sharpening his mind. He would forever be grateful to be married to a counselor, a therapist, a wise wizard of the brain’s complications.

“Ready?” Moran asked.

They both walked slowly toward Bethany’s position, their eyes locked on the trees where Tobias saw the four animals.

“Eight,” Bethany whispered as they approached. “Four more in a cluster of trees to the right of the others.”

“Typical pack. Haven’t heard the growl, yet,” Moran said. “Maybe they didn’t see us.”

“Oh, they did.” Tobias pointed to the tree with the first rychat he spotted. “I swear I saw that one lick its lips.”

“Well, we’ll have to take care of that.”

Moran raised his crossbow and took aim at the one Tobias pointed out. In tandem, both Tobias and Bethany raised their own weapons.

“One on the trunk,” Tobias whispered.

Bethany responded. “The big one to the right.”

The three were silent as they steadied themselves.

She Welcomes the Darkness While Wandering the Destructive Halls of Hell

Wrapped in her cloak of skulls and crossbones

Look in her eyes, lose yourself in their depths, You’ll experience her long forgotten fights, Her constant battles, but be wary of her strength, For she battles her demons all through the nights.

Look closely and you’ll see her torment swirling the surface, As the demons write their names, etched into her bones, She welcomes them into her soul through the darkness, As she is wrapped in her cloak of skulls and crossbones.

Her soul is the blood drenched battleground, trampled By haunted ghosts of torment and screaming wiles, A graveyard of broken and forgotten stories of her life, Tales of her gory survival, hidden behind guileless smiles.

She is in her element as she wraps herself in midnight, Becoming one with the darkness inside and out, Broken apart by the moon glow, causing her to howl, Listening for her brokenness as she screams her doubt.

In turn, she carves her name on certain tombstones, Cradling the haunted cries of her past love as it dies, She reduces herself to the ashes for those who hurt her, Giving the phoenix her wings, allowing it to rise.

She knows she has been forgotten, a whim at most, As they scurry from her path, hiding behind their rock, She is born of starlight, somewhere far from her world, Lost, unable to find her home, pain her stumbling block.

The storm keeps her company, at one with her turmoil, She knows it’s the only friend she can ever trust, Its honesty is its own destructiveness for full disclosure, Forgoing the need to lie, pretension of love and lust.

The more I watch, the more I realise she is broken and lost, As she starts to become one with the darkness, the shadow, Choosing to move further from the star that she was born into, Meandering through the halls of hell, cradling her deathblow.

She endeavours to merge with her hellfire demons, Preferring the numbness, the desire to torture and kill, It calms her eternal fires, her raw and bloody chaos, While she makes love to the evil and depraved at will.
