There were just a couple of things that held me back a bit from really enjoying the story. The emotional and devotional depth to which the characters professed for each other came about quickly, so while I desperately wanted to believe in the magnetic pull between Candice and the men it wasn’t quite there. The story does offer a realistic look at how a ménage might be dealt with in society and the uncertainty and insecurities that go with it.

I would definitely recommend this story to readers looking for a hot and heavy ménage relationship that strives to push inhibitions aside. Since this is the first in a new series by Ms. Gideon, it will be interesting to see what she comes up with next.

When I read the blurb for this short story, I was intrigued. I wanted to know how these two people would manage to get together without someone not making it to the end of the story. I needn’t have worried. Abby Wood packs a lot in a few short pages. And yes, there is a lot going on. The writing flows well and it’s a quick, but steamy read.

That said, there were a couple of things that kept me from enjoying the full potential of the book. While I love a hot story, I want connection between the characters before the sex. It seemed like things happened really, really fast and while fast is good, I wanted more back story as to why things were going as fast as they did. I give the author kudos for keeping a tight tale, but there were more than a few times I wished for more detail. I had to go back and reread to make sure I’d kept up with all that happened. And the banter between Josie and the secondary characters is quite comical at times. I liked the addition of the other G-men members. Oh, and there’s a scene in the woods, that is worth of a fan and a cool drink. You’ve been warned.

She’s had to fend for herself for so long that I would’ve expected her to want to be more independent and perhaps a little more headstrong and defiant. While having Cooper step in and try to right some of the wrongs that have happened to Laney is very heroic; the problem is that he treats her too often like a child and her brothers do the same. His domination of her just seemed to me like a different type of abuse than from the one that she previously suffered. The characters, separately, do have some redeeming qualities, but as a couple, they are just a little too unreal.

The story itself can be at times quite depressing but the mystery surrounding some unusual events is what kept my attention. I really wanted to know “whodunit” and more importantly why. While I wouldn’t recommend this story for readers looking for a quick and light shifter read, I would recommend to those looking for a story with lots of steamy sex and plenty of tender moments.

Zarth and Tirian’s family dynamics are interesting, to say the least, and unlike most ménages, the twins don’t start out sharing Kayla so easily which made this a unique story.

Ms. Noreen’s new world is very creative and should capture and keep the readers attention. I recommend this book for fans of fantasy stories, new realms and new creatures with happy pleasurable endings.

Furthermore, his corruption and use of Song and Dylan is frustrating, as is the author’s thinly veiled acceptance and resolution of their conflict. Dylan was perhaps the only character in the story that showed sparks of humanity, depth, and true emotion and even that was contradicted at the end.

The authors’ combined voice is very distinct with a vivid world that by turns glitters and stalks in its seedy underground and ritzy towers. The sex between various men is plentiful and hot making the book an easy read if you ignore the plot arc that was not well executed. The characters didn’t work for me either with the lack of depth, coming across as one-dimensional and unable to draw me into their plight and emotion.

For those that enjoy hot man on man sex and can ignore the motivations and thin plot surrounding them, the backdrop of Shanghai and the authors’ vivid voices can make this enjoyable and unique. If nothing else, this book certainly brought to life the tourist and non-tourist aspects of a city not commonly used in erotic romance and I was happy to delve more deeply into that. Perhaps you will too.

The Salem Witch trials are on the periphery of this historic piece, though the action ends before they start. The title and the time period led me to believe there would be an actual, misunderstood witch involved. There was not. Or perhaps a time jump would occur to a future date when the witch needed waking. Wrong on that count, too.

Ms. Whitefern does a credible job with her heroine. Faith is believable and sympathetic as a widow living on the fringe of a Puritan village. She’s largely self-sufficient and certainly not pining after her no-good, abusive, not-so-dearly-departed husband, all good things. James is a nice enough young man, though his personality never really came into focus for me and his failure to reassure Faith that he will marry her someday is baffling. I’m a stickler for history. Even a short historical story needs to strive for accuracy in all of its aspects. Alternative history can be toyed with and can be great fun but this was obviously not meant as an alternate reality Salem. The dialogue waffles between ‘thee’ and ‘thou’ formality of the period and obvious twentieth century phrases such as ‘I want you so bad’ which were jarring in their inappropriate placement. Ms. Whitefern did some research on the Salem troubles, the names were all in place, Sarah Good, Tituba, and so on, but the lascivious license and lawless behavior of the townspeople did not feel like a real Puritan community. Things got ugly in Salem, certainly, innocent people were tortured and hanged, but all by the letter of the law and under the strict guidance of learned theologians rather than mob rule. (Not that it makes it better, but that’s how it was.) The historical innaccuracies on the author’s part are what brought down the rating.

The scenes of lovemaking are sweet, though, and this story’s saving grace. His young, tender fire awakes the long-banked embers in her previously unfulfilled libido and her giving nature are a source of endless surprise and joy for him. Waking the Witch is an uncomplicated bedtime story read with sex scenes heated enough to have you squirming before lights out.
