The recurring highlight in Sterling’s Way are the light moments: subtle touches of humor, sometimes because of events, sometimes revealed in conversation. This reader simply adored Jack Sterling, start to finish. A clip from a conversation:

“…as you so delicately pointed out, I may have nearly knocked you onto your—” He raised an amused brow before he continued. “Well, let’s just say I almost knocked you down.”

Jack’s good humor and courage are well established at the start; Ms. Leone keeps the story moving, keeps the humor coming, and indeed, doesn’t let her readers down.

Cover expectations led me to expect some echo of a cheesy western, with images like the sunset-colored hair, or perhaps the ocean-blue eyes, and sure enough: At times, descriptions delve into almost a parody of the old time western, offering an element of the cheesy that seems unintended … the moments don’t spoil an otherwise good story, but the over-the-top does tend to distant the reader from the action.

A fan of the western romance will find a lot to like here, especially the truly admirable hero.

Cate struggles not to lose boyfriend Finn, who has no memory of her, while being true to her sisters. Finn is a simply wonderful, real, heartfelt character; readers will adore him.

Spotswood’s New England is both familiar and entirely strange: geographically the same and yet, a magical world that is scene to the struggles between powers.

Although part of a series, this can be read and understood as a stand-alone. Reading this makes me regret not starting at the beginning! Although a ‘paranormal,’ Sister’s Fate, so character-driven, will have a wide general appeal and might well draft a few new readers to the genre! Beautifully written.

There’s something compelling about Tina; she’s a nurse, she’s committed to help from the first, but she’s also willing to mislead to get others to help, too. Her commitment to provide aid–right from the beginning, in dubious circumstances–makes her an incredibly admirable character. She takes a risk for someone she doesn’t know. Is it her innate kindness we see at work, or does she feel a connection to Joshua from the start?

The author doesn’t give us a moment to contemplate; events keep coming at us quickly. The impact is largely in the unpredictable nature, so,  to avoid spoiler, let’s say neither thriller readers nor fans of hot romances will be disappointed.

I would have liked some reference that made it clear from the start that this was in a contemporary setting. There is something so ‘yesteryear’ in the opening, I was almost disappointed to find, later in the story, that it was set in present-day.

Quite the Catch is quite the exciting, quick read!

Just as you start to believe that probably nothing much is going to happen, they sit down for tea and suddenly, you realize that Aldred Chase has lured you, the reader, right in.

Paul is fast acting and circumstances are, well, reporting actual circumstances might reveal too much; but circumstances are both and strange and unpredictable all at once. No spoilers here: you have to read All Things To Everyone to find out the details. Once you reach the stage where unpredictable things start to happen, you will not be able to tear yourself away.

The story does ramble around, from hauntings to disappearances; some motivations are unclear (in fact, it isn’t always easy to tell the good guys from the bad guys) but the characters are interesting, and events unexpected!

Suffice to say All Things to Everyone is unpredictable and fun; and runs the gamut from the weird to the grotesque. This is a great fun read for anyone really, its not just for kids! Also, kudos to the cover design–it fits wonderfully!

Charles, Uncle David, even her mom are important and meaningfully deep secondary characters. Sugar Morgan is somehow, someone more. Characters truly are at the center of this charming romance. Still, it IS a romance, and no matter the things between them, I continue to have hope for the main couple throughout.

The Sweetest Thing is nicely written, if occasionally wordy. Author Darcy it seems, won’t have readers overlook a detail, so perhaps too thoroughly explains points, or must include one more adjective than necessary. The wordiness occasionally slows the pace, but by no means disturbs the wonderful tenor of the story.

And I must note: I love the ‘candy’ themed cover of The Sweetest Thing. Perfectly appropriate!

It’s easy to admire her; and every bit as easy as it is to dislike Garrett Black, who she ends up helping and then working for. He’s not the classic ‘bad boy’ but he is, well, unlikable. However, his attitude leads to the odd funny moment, and readers that just begin to think this is too formulaic will enjoy these unexpected moments.

There is an attraction – the expected romance-chemistry splashes into their relationship at just the right moment – and possibly slightly too perfectly. However, there are light moments, and the humor really works here. Garrett becomes more human as we go: his pursuit of perfection is nothing to how he loves his car. The story improves immeasurably as we bump into some of his thoughts (‘the woman is too cheerful!’) Moments like that really make this story.

Her Boss By Arrangement is not really a page turner, but is very readable. Although the main plot is predictable, it is amusing and it’s a good nightstand book for when you need a few minutes distraction.

The Richebourg Affair introduces commander Truchaud of the Paris police; he is on his way to visit home, to the small rural town of Nuits-Saint-Georges. His journey is personal; all is not well in the small home vineyard overseen by his aging father. His family and old friends (largely neighbors) are happy to see him, for the most part.

The vineyard and village as the setting becomes nearly a character in its own right. Its beauty, its important role within the community as well as the central ‘livelihood’ for the community make the place vitally important. Community members are very connected to their lifestyles and to one another, and the dedication to their wines is strong. People know one another. Anyone might pop by for the odd wine to go with dinner, and his family is a regular customer of the patisserie but three doors down. Neighbors visit, share wine and local gossip and…in the midst of this lovely community-friendliness, Truchaud, the respected inspector, stumbles into both memory (of a long ago love) and murder.

Of course the local gendarmes (police) are immediately worried the big shot inspector from the Paris division will infringe on their territory, pull rank or, worse yet, discover what they wish he would not. It seems a clear concern about respecting borders, but it might be something more.

However, Truchaud is sensitive to their concerns; he’s a respected, logical thinker who it’s easy to like, immediately.

A few small matters (a missing season of wine, that should be aging in the cellar, for example) strike Truchaud as odd, but he slowly uncovers that which is more than simply out of place. It starts with a casual concern about the appropriate tax on certain products, and proceeds toward fraud, betrayal… deceit. Suspense builds slowly, and then concern. The clever inspector is working alone because, although his family is quite close at hand they are somehow…possibly…involved.

R.M Cartmel joins the ranks of the best of the classic crime writers here: one whose mystery has the full character development of any novel, with believable events, attention to police procedures – and that hard to define element which makes the story very difficult to put down. I rank R.M Cartmel with my own personal favorite, Dame Ngaio Marsh, and am delighted to discover this contemporary writer creating mysteries. This one is right at the top of the charts! Yet this is in some ways far from the typical such romance! For our heroine is not a young girl first being presented… oh no, Ms. Bone’s characters are individual and orignal enough to keep us from guessing too well. She avoids predictability – always a good thing.

Gillian, our heroine, is perfectly sure of her own heart, but is a victim of her times, both of the impending politicial crisis, as well as expectation of a lady in her position. Simon is part of her past, her heart well buttressed against her one time feelings for him. She seems to long most for her home in the country, even while being motivated by a political cause.

Gillian is a unique main character. She seems anxious, yet dedicated to the cause at opening, yet we also see her from other points of view. “Baroness Gillian Chauncey had become resourceful, cunning, and ruthless.” Interesting though these other glimpses, are, some abrupt leaps between points-of-view and shifts in time are distracting and annoying.

The plot twines well with the history of the times. The political matter, Their cause, is motivating, important but not presented in an overly complex manner.

Simon is wonderful.  He takes charge so quickly, obviously admires Gillian — but more, he admires her courage; and he is the one who recognizes her danger. With so much going on, survival alone might seem an achievement, but we readers find ourselves hoping for the romance in spite of all the challenges.

Although Katherine Bone’s historic romance My Lord Rogue offers all the right elements, it is also quite different from most romances set in the time. More than just romance readers will enjoy this one.

This drama is a serious novel of life; there’s romance there, of course, but also a certain grim hardiness, an admirable determination that runs not only through the novel, but through the best of the characters as well.

Characters in this epic story are both good and bad, and those that sit somewhere in the middle. We find ourselves in the midst of the “Wolf Clan” of Lenni Lenape people. There are those of mixed races among them, and also, they welcome furtrappers and other visitors. Their lives are busy and eventful – and their culture here is presented in a very straightforward yet interesting way.

We recognize the thoughtful wisdom of the sachem, the kindness of some of the village women, as well as the different motives, lives and loves, of different tribe members. The same could be said of the visitors – from the good hearted young Nicholas, once forced to steal to eat, to the brutality of others.

Katari, woman born to the Wolf Clan, and Nicholas have spirits that soar – yet they are in some way worlds apart. Ms. Leigh does a magnificent job setting the stage for their meeting–as well as letting us understand with eyes that seem to look on these Native traditions as if one of them–the many cultural things, from misunderstandings to agreements, that stand between them. Yet, readers will find that they cling to hope.

Nicholas is steadily revealed as a decent guy at heart and will capture readers’ hearts more and more. Katari is a survivor – and is, in a curious way, perhaps on the most immense journey of all. There are wonderful, touching moments, even after moments of terror and fear. This reader found it an absolute page-turner, with not one word wasted.

Perhaps, in such an epic, it is impossible to completely miss the odd stereotypical character or the occasional predictable thread of plot. Still, there is more than enough of the unexpected drama to keep readers guessing, and a few humorous moments too. Do read Jessica Leigh’s Savage Journey.
