Zara is a strong character who comes from a military family and is devoted to her duty and country. Like Zara he takes his duty to his country seriously. His reaction when he first meets Zara is rather funny because like her he is smitten at first sight. This is not the first time he has heard of her. His two bodyguards knew her from previous contests, and she earned their respect and friendship. James is a determined and persistent man who goes after what he wants, and what he wants is Zara. He can be very sly when he wants to be.

I enjoyed the personal bodyguards who were two of his best friends and were under his command. They were also going to compete in the contest, but Corning ended up having an accident and breaking her ankle, leaving her prince with one less bodyguard. As I mentioned before, James is a sly one and so uses his influence to have Zara become his other bodyguard. This is when things become really interesting. He makes sure that he is alone with Zara as much as possible and I like that they both make sure each one knows how they stand with each other. Zara really enjoys his company and as the tours continue, she finds it harder and harder to resist him. Especially when he kisses her which shows the reader without words just how compatible they are. I really enjoyed that the author made sure that James met Zara’s parents and found out that her father was in the Air Force and the respect James shows him goes a long way to getting his respect. Zara’s mother is a hoot as she treats him like any other person, feeding him up with pie.

There was a nice twist to the plot right when they think everything is going well, which adds some great suspense. Just as them seems to be a happily ever ending, with the suspense wrapped up, there is an ominous final sentence that makes the reader want to know what is going to happen to them next.

True, he can be formidable, he is a werewolf after all, but when it comes to the heroine, he’s a handsome, well-dressed lovable marshmallow.

Speaking of Sally; she’s a pivotal secondary character that is integral to the plot, mystery and pace of the story. I enjoyed how I was introduced to her, how she won the hearts of all the other characters and how helping her, helped solve a much bigger and serious plot thread.

I startled my hubby so bad when I barked out a huge HA! at the part with the shorty robe. Then I snickered. Those two sentences in that scene totally tickled my funny bone. So, yes, there is a smorgasbord of reasons to smile during this novel, so even though the fires, drama and a bit of suspense is to be taken seriously, the author managed to keep the overall feeling of the novel, upbeat.

There are truly too many points, fun parts, interesting character interactions, dialogue and surprises to do justice in explaining how much I enjoyed the story. There were a few language choices that I personally cringed at, but take them out of the picture, and A Wolf After My Own Heart is a perfect MaryJanice Davidson read. I enjoyed the first book in the series, but I like this one a lot better.

One never takes away from the other. I’m sure this story is good enough to stand by itself, but I sure wouldn’t want to read it without Jake and Cody and their friends.

This is one of those “can’t put it down” kind of books. Better plan on having some free time although it’s a fast read, too.

Through it all is Lord Merryn. Mysterious Merryn. I couldn’t figure him out. I believe that stems from the fact that this tale is strictly told from Gwedneline’s point of view only. I had to garner whatever clues I could from his reactions to things people told him, or how he always seemed to be there, sooner or later, when the heroine needed him the most.

I couldn’t judge their attraction by passion because this was a truly sweet story. The focus was definitely on the heroine, and she eventually figures out her feelings but it’s all because of their interactions, their growing relationship as the story went on, and what the hero and heroine learned about each other throughout the novel. I wasn’t exactly confident of their growing affections being real, certainly not from the vantage point of the hero. He was most proper. Powerful to be sure, but proper, so I have to say that I think this story played out within the strictures of the society of the period. At times the pace seemed slow, bogged down by the details of daily living, then it would speed up for a while, keeping those pages flipping, until it didn’t. Completing the book wasn’t a hardship by any means; I enjoyed Gwendeline’s stubborn refusal to accept what she was told because she intuited there was more to it – and she was right. The wrap up chapter was both exciting, dramatic and brought a happy ever after closure that seemed fitting for Lord Merryn and Gwendeline.

Earl to the Rescue was a nice story filled with adventures and surprises, a sweet romance and well worth reading.

Chasing Frost was a delightful surprise. It is an intriguing story with an intricately weaved storyline that kept me quickly turning the pages. Chase and Sadie are polar opposites and because of their different personalities, they frustrate each other. Chase is laid back, fun and outgoing and everyone loves him. Chase is also full of contrasts; he is an accountant who likes working with numbers, but he isn’t boring or introverted. Although he has goals and works hard, Chase makes it look like so easy people underestimate him. Chase has his vulnerabilities and he has made up for what he considers his inadequacies, by making everyone laugh and being their friend.

Sadie is a woman trying to make it in a male dominated field and she is afraid to let her guard down. She is an uptight, straight laced workaholic. Sadie doesn’t have friends and rarely sees or talks to her family. At first, Sadie doesn’t like anything about Chase, but as time goes on, she comes to appreciate him. Rather than disliking Sadie, I felt sorry for her and was hoping Chase would be able to loosen her up.

What I enjoyed most about Chase and Sadie are their layers and imperfections.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading their story and thought they were great together. They share a lot of chemistry and although they are polar opposites, they work well together and are perfect for each other. This is the first book I have read by Isabel Jolie and it won’t be my last. I couldn’t put this book down and I stayed up way too late reading it.

This mystery was well written. I had a good time playing around with the various clues about the possible identity of the killer as I tried to piece them all together before the final scene. It was also nice to see how the fantasy elements of the storyline played into the main plot. They added layers of depth to the characters and setting without ever distracting the audience from our primary goal of figuring out what really happened to the poor victim.

I had trouble keeping track of the large cast of characters, especially since some of them were introduced with little to no information about who they were or what they were trying to accomplish. It would have been helpful to have more detailed introductions of everyone. Even something as simple as one additional introductory sentence per character would have gone a long way to helping me remember who everyone was.

To be perfectly honest, parsnips aren’t a vegetable I’ve ever put much thought into at all. The fact that they kept showing up over and over again was delightful. This became even more true once I realized why they were such a common topic of conversation and how they were affecting the storyline in ways I wouldn’t have ever imagined in the beginning. The author did a wonderful job of taking something as ordinary as a root vegetable and turning it into fodder for an incredibly unique story.

This is the tenth book in a series, but it can be read as a standalone work.

Dana and Fox’s personalities were written perfectly. I enjoyed seeing the way they talked their way through the odd things they began to experience during their backyard camping adventure. It would have been nice to have more foreshadowing. The first half of it was so different from the second half that they felt like separate books at times. There were so many missed opportunities to tie them together either with references to the show or by leaving small clues in the first few pages that adult readers will understand but kids might need some time to puzzle out.

With that being said, the ending was well done. I smiled and nodded as I followed every twist and turn. This was where it really started to feel like it was part of the X-Files universe, but it was written in a way that could be understood perfectly well by someone who had no prior experiences with this type of storytelling.

The X-Files – Earth Children Are Weird should be read by anyone who likes thinking critically and talking about what they’ve just seen, especially if they’re a fan of the original X-Files or want to share this story in a kid-friendly way with the next generation.

The character development was well done. Not only was Kayla a well-rounded and complex person, several of the secondary characters she spent the most time with were as well. I enjoyed slowly peeling back the layers to all of them. No one was quite who they appeared to be at first glance, but every new revelation about them made sense and only served to endear me to them even more. There’s something wonderful about getting to know multiple characters as well as I did, especially when their personality quirks began to affect the folks around them in all sorts of unexpected ways.

With that being said, I found the cast of characters to be a little too large in general. It was one thing to get to know Kayla and those closest to her, but the storyline sometimes veered off into long descriptions of characters who rarely if ever showed up again. While I usually appreciate a lot of details in the mysteries I read, in this particular case it could have been toned down a bit so that the most important residents of Seaside Shores would have more time to shine. This is a minor criticism of something I otherwise enjoyed reading.

Some of my favorite passages were the ones that described the many tantalizing desserts Kayla made for her clients. Not only did they sound amazing, seeing how she responded to all of the variables that come with baking sweets gave me so much insight into her personality. Her calm reactions to the occasional kitchen mishap and her quiet pride when a recipe turned out even better than she hoped were both a great deal of fun to read. On a lighthearted note, her successful baking projects also made my mouth water!

Peppermint Cream Die was a satisfying read. Anyone who has a sweet tooth should check it out.

This was a really great read. To begin with any time an author develops a character with a dog for a sidekick I’m happy. Especially if the character talks to the dog as much as I do my own. But Zeke, said dog, is not the highlight of this story. Important but not the best part. The best part is the character as well as the side characters.

When I tell you a little about this story, you’re going to begin to think it’s another “legal” law thing, but it isn’t. Burr Lafayette, the main character is a lawyer, but this is almost like a mystery, very much so. He’s the kind of character that always catches me right from the beginning and there can be no question that I’ll finish the book. This time though, Charles Cutter even gave me a picture in my mind. Burr is a little run down, not just his clothing but maybe his physique too. I just know he’s a little overweight. And he’s that character that’s always chasing a dollar to pay his rent; always hoping for a case to pay his bills.

The story is intriguing and an attention getter in and of itself but the humor… I loved the humor. Cutter created side characters that make the whole story more humorous. They’re fidgety, picky, and yet indispensable. Cutter even makes the prosecutor funny. Or maybe I meant to say, makes fun of the prosecutor:) Burr is humorous out loud but he’s also that kind of character always thinking some smart cynical or truthful thing to say in his mind. You know? All the things you’d love to say out loud yourself.

So we have a lawyer with a legal case that he needs to solve but hopes the business law part of it goes on forever so he can pay his bills. He becomes a criminal lawyer because he needs to pay his bills and there happens to be a death. We have Zeke, a great dog, a boat, and a couple of hilarious employees. An author who can make even the trial procedures interesting and humorous. All rolled into what I’m going to call a mystery. This is Book 3 of a series titled “Bear Bones Mystery”.

I never ever go backwards in a series but this time I’ll break my rule. I’ll start back at Book 1 if you’ll be working on Book 4 Mr. Cutter.
