The ultimate time travel adventure! ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW follows Den, a seventeen-year-old who has been a servant in Castle Kuthalds all his life. Den struggles with sexual awakening, and finds himself drawn to Oshana, the Vizier’s strong and alluring daughter. When this forbidden love is discovered by the cruel and obsessive Vizier, he becomes enraged. The Vizier incarcerates Den in the notorious Zakaz prison, and begins a campaign of murdering a generation of his subjects. To set things right, Den is brought to an ancient underground civilization of monstrous shape-shifters that sends him back in time. The plan fails, and Den is transported to an even earlier time. But during both visits to the past, Den inadvertently interacts with himself. This sets in motion a series of perilous escapes in three separate time periods—three different Dens, Oshanas, Umbras, and Viziers.

What a complicated web through time travel, a feeling of constant suspense, this book inspires. Den is a young servant put in unjust circumstances. He works in a castle and makes the mistake of kissing his leader’s daughter, the Vizier’s beautiful, innocent girl, Oshana. This mistake lands him in prison and on death row. You’d think things could not get worse. But they do.

As readers we are led down a complex path where time splits off. Luckily, time maps at the beginning of the chapters help to keep us on the right path.

Den runs into many unsavory people, such as Minister Umbra, the evil Vizier’s advisor. Umbra is not exactly who he seems.

Den, like all the castle’s servants, has a disability. This comes into play in the story and has an effect on the plot at times. He is surrounded by others with different types of physical or mental challenges. His friend, Modo, is sweet and loveable and naïve to the world’s evils. The way Den interacts with him and at the other extreme, with the malicious persons, brings out his heroic tendencies. Den meets many new people as well. We read about his struggles and how he comes to his decisions, and this pushes him to be someone he didn’t know he could be. It is easy to root for this character as we watch him grow. He is moved by the sacrifice of others.

There is a fantasy element to this story, besides the time travel situation. There are mythical creatures, The Walapai, who are responsible for the time travelling. They seem evil, and Den must discover more about them and their unusual talents. As a race that lives underground, they have the power to help or to destroy.

Because Den had kissed the ruler’s daughter, destruction was forced upon the land by that angry father. The Walapai send Den back in time with the hopes that he will prevent himself from kissing the girl. Den messes up, big time, so goes back again, further. The complications that occur are intricately entwined with each branch of time. It’s like putting together a jigsaw puzzle and watching at the different corners connect to form a coherent picture. The time maps help to keep readers in line with the connections, and one surely feels smarter after reading this story and keeping it together in the mind.

Den’s sense of honor and duty to himself and others makes him likeable. He risks himself to save his helpless friend. He gets to make decisions for himself for the first time. When he’s defiant, readers can cheer him on. When he, a good character to start, grows even more, we admire him. What’s it like to be a hero? Is it worth it? We get to hear his ponderings on this.

His future self teaches him things, but his younger self can teach his future self things as well.

The secondary characters are thought-provoking and have unexpected traits, such as the compassionate castle executioners.

There are twists and turns, an unpredictable story with many surprises. There are characters whose actions sometimes take us by storm. The story gets more and more complex, as Den keeps meeting other versions of himself.

Logan helps him escape from those who are hunting Den, but he’ll have to give up “everything that brought meaning and identity to” his life. Would it be worth it? It’s interesting to see when the earlier Den sees what the later Den had done and read the different perspectives, and when he sees himself from a distance.

The story is not a light read, but it is thought-provoking with characters who are worth reading about.

A Staten Island-raised engineer who escapes city living, only to find the city within himself. A mysterious floor in a Queens apartment building reachable through attainment alone.

Songs to New York crosses the threshold between impossible and occurrence: “Only in New York.”

Like the pearls of an exotic necklace, these stories each add a touch of beauty to the whole of which they are a part. There are several tales with the theme of life in New York, a wonderfully diverse place bustling with activity and flavored with its unique atmosphere. Reading these stories brings a reader right into this world. The author has excelled at painting a picture of the setting.

There’s a slight supernatural tone weaving throughout the lives of these characters.

The stories are different from each other though, with a variety of characters and plotlines. Readers will find their favorites and their less-than-favorites among these pages. Most of the stories drew me in, but it really is a matter of personal taste. Each reader will be drawn more to some stories than others.

The first story, The Cyclist, is really charming. A writer and his cute cat have one heck of an adventure. Their story is told with poetic, eloquent writing. There are also down-to-earth scenes and deep ponderings of life. The writing is fresh and expressively creative.

Other stories include The Diamond, a sad tale but filled with hopeful anticipation. It’s about faith. The story entitled The Bar has more of those great descriptions of really life in New York, the neighborhoods, the people, the scenery…It’s philosophical and reflective.

Getting really creative concerning a point of view, we have the story The Earthworm. Faith is a theme, as is respect for life. In The Addressee, we read about an encounter with an angel. In The Request, a little girl gets a quick trip to heaven. We are treated to a child’s magical description. This story is about the meaning of honor.

In the last story, we are treated to the tale of a hard-working family and a nice teenager who is just trying to help his family and others. This story involves a mystery and is good for inspiring curiosity. There is a theme of morality and kindness.

Overall, these are quality stories and very creative. They leave a reader with many ponderings and a smile. It’s like talking to someone with an upbeat attitude who has some wild stories to tell. This is a recommended story collection.

An archeologist searches for a lost treasure in the Mayan jungle through many adventures, encountering a fascinating man from another time who teaches her to love again. She travels back in time to Palenque and the golden age of Mayas.

Imagine going back in time over a thousand years to a place filled with beauty and danger at every turn. Modern-day archaeologist, Sienna, does just that. She has lost her family and now finds herself, through an accident, back in time to the days of a great king of the Mayan people. This would certainly be a scary situation, but she meets a gorgeous warrior prince, Prince Balam. What makes this guy even more intriguing is that he is also a shaman and has a unique supernatural talent. This talent comes into play in the book, when Sienna finds herself in one of her many face-offs with death.

The two develop feelings for each other. The problem is, they each have a goal, and their goals clash with each other. Another issue arises: Prince Balam has been promised to another woman, and peace between cities may depend on him honoring his obligation. Despite these problems, and their developing love, the Prince Balam and Sienna keep their honor in check. Both are very likeable characters that readers can relate to.

Their deadly enemies present such obstacles that we get to see Prince Balam and Sienna at their best, facing such situations. Some enemies are obvious. However, others, not so much. There is a mystery here. The two suspect certain people of being against them, but are they? The author has done a good job surprising readers at different points. The plot moves along at a fast pace, making this a page-turner. The setting is exotic and therefore fun to read. Sometimes though, certain things are confusing. Does Sienna believe Prince Balam in the beginning or not? And there is some telling and not showing, which distances the reader a bit. However, this is not a common problem in the book. Near the end there was a drastic turnaround of events. I found myself wishing certain things were explained better because there was a bit of a jump. I did really enjoy the book though and was satisfied with the very ending. I recommend this to those who love time travels or exotic settings.

The well-meaning and meddlesome Mr. and Mrs. Aden want nothing more than to protect their only daughter, Hannah.

After her childhood kidnapping in Somalia and a final showdown in Italy against the monster responsible, nineteen-year-old Hannah just wants back the life stolen from her.

She isn’t naïve like her mother believes. Frequent flashes of past terrors assure her that the healing process is far from over. At the same time, she’d hardly use her dad’s words and call herself “strong” or “brave.” That description belongs to Melissa Bennett, the woman who almost died saving her.

While she is glad to have saved a life for once, the one she’d almost taken continues to haunt her dreams and stall her recovery.

Despite her good deed and continuous help from friends and family abroad and Kyle—the father of her little girl—she knows her days of freedom are numbered.

This story is an exciting family saga wrapped up in a small package with lots of characters and dramas in a little space. Though it is one installment in a bigger tale, for the most part, one can understand what is going on. Being thrown into the middle of the action is not an issue excepting the occasional confusing moment.

Hannah was kidnapped and harmed but later saved. She and other characters have painful emotional journeys to go through. The author does a great job at helping his readers understand just what this feels like for each of these characters. Some must recover from damaging things done to them, must overcome self-doubt, and some must work out regret. These people are growing. They are complex, and we come to understand them.

This very emotional tale was written to reflect the immediacy of feelings. The conversations are insightful. The action is told through the dialogue though. If one wants action, it comes with this story, but not first hand. It’s all in the remembering.

There are some spicy scenes but not with new or hoped for love. Rather, these scenes are about happily married couples. Trust issues are examined and sometimes in charming and unexpected ways. This little story was worth the read.

Montana Territory, 1867

Graham Patterson, an accomplished veterinarian, is leaving Seattle and heading east to start a new life for himself. Willow Bennet lives just outside the town of Whitcomb Springs with only her beloved dog to keep her company. It’s a predictable life, until late one night when she foils an attack and her dog is wounded as revenge.

Can she trust the mysterious stranger who insists he can help?

For a cozy little Western, this one has setting, characters, and action wrapped up in a story that will leave readers satisfied. Montana is the place, and the time is the late 1860s. Graham is an interesting fellow, and he is lost in the wilderness. He runs into two “helpful” men who give him food, Kit and Andrew. The guys seem nice enough, but are they really? A banker oddly runs into them in this setting. He will come into play later, as a reader might suspect. This innocent meeting of characters is a good set-up for the controversy to come.

Christi Corbett uses terminology and descriptions that are so natural, one falls right into the story. With dialogue perfect for the setting, a reader goes along for the ride with Graham and overhears the sinister plans of others. But what can one man do to stop them? When he hears that they plan on hurting an innocent woman, Graham knows he must do something, so he follows them. When the men prepare to attack a woman who lives on her own with only a dog, some unexpected things happen—a twist in the plot. Graham gets bold here, and we see him in action. As he deals with the fallout from the men’s attack, we learn that he has a cool job. He goes to work. During this time, his character and that of others is further developed. He grows closer to the woman, Willow.

During this feel-good story, we are treated to little tidbits of medical knowledge, nothing too technical, just interesting. When Graham goes to town for supplies, men surround him, thinking he robbed the bank. One thing after another happens, keeping the suspense rolling. Since Graham won’t say he was with Willow, helping her out overnight, because it would ruin her reputation, it looks like this just might be the end for him. Prosecution for a good man seems likely.

The author has done a good job of keeping the story moving along and showing the characters in tough situations. We also see some character growth for secondary characters. This tale is a good read that I would recommend to those who love historically set stories, especially Westerns.

When Sarah, a space pilot, hears that her dear friend James has disappeared on a mission, she can’t just stand back and do nothing. She gears up to go to Erebus, a far-off planet, on her Riggs ship, a very fast ship. When she and her friends get ready for this journey, one can sense their excitement. Their conversations are down-to-earth, so to speak. The author is to be commended showing these relationships in such a short story.

There are problems. First, space pirates are out there. Then there’s the time differential to think about. Sarah is a single mother, and more time passes on earth for her son while she’s away, than for her, on her ship. Her introspection about her child is sad.

The visual and technical descriptions are top-notch and really get one set in the scenes, and the occasional references to pop culture are amusing.

The crew arrives at Janus, a moon of Erebus and sees footprints. A little mystery get mixed into the tale. Why would James go down to Janus at such a great risk to himself? The crew goes down to find him. Can they rescue him in time? One new suspenseful thing after another happens, to keep up the pace.

The tale ends with a footnote about the real science. It is interesting and helpful to know.

During the Reign of Terror in France in the late 1700s, the common people amused themselves by watching the heads of the nobility roll, severed by the guillotine. When Eduard Saulnier falls in love with Countess Annise de Brisson in 1793, he fears that, as a commoner, he will never be allowed to court her. But Annise is staying with her aunt because her parents have been sized by the revolutionaries and condemned to die by the guillotine. Eduard approaches the old lady for permission to court Annise, knowing his chances are slim. However, he is totally unprepared for the old countess’s answer—yes, he may court and marry Annise, after he gets her parents out of prison…any way he can.

Every once in a while, love at first sight happens, but would a man risk his life to prove this? Eduard does. The setting is Revolutionary France, and the dangers are high and everywhere. Luckily, Eduard is a commoner, but he falls for a young aristocratic woman. Since her parents were carted off to prison and scheduled for a probable execution, Eduard has to go to Annise’s great aunt to ask for Annise’s hand in marriage. When the aunt says he can have her blessing if Eduard can get Annise’s parents out of prison, he’s afraid, but luckily for us readers, he takes up this challenge.

What follows is an adventure driven by suspense. Eduard recruits some interesting friends with controversial jobs, such as the executioner. He is a nice young man and likeable from the start. Annise is also likeable as are her family members and Eduard’s friends and family. The author has done a good job at filling out the characters. They are kind-hearted, and their honorable actions are driven by their personal faith, giving them all integrity.

As a reader with a degree in French, I found the world building of this time and place to be exciting and accurate. The challenge given to Eduard was a perfect set-up for suspense. The test was also easy to believe because it required that Eduard have help, and he realized he needed it.

The tone to this story is sweet. The characters have gratitude for what they have, and the love is an innocent young love. There are many tender kisses.

Some questions came up for me as a reader though. Sometimes things happened too easily. For example, why did Annise’s relatives accept Eduard, a stranger, without a remark? Why did another aristocrat, Lukas, accept Eduard’s surprising secret and take it the way he did? Everybody seemed to just accept and be happy upon hearing revelations, and without doubts. Perhaps the tension could have been higher.

This is a pleasant read though, and I’m glad I read it. It was a breath of fresh air reading about people with integrity doing things for good reasons.

Does anyone ever wonder what really happened to Frankenstein’s monster? The story goes that he went off into the distance to die. However, Mary Patterson Thornburg has a different story to tell, one from those who knew him or his “father” the doctor.

Packed into this short tale is quite a bit of story. Set in England during the Regency, we get an inside view of the doctor, and his creation, mostly from the point-of-view of an English explorer to the far north. This explorer, Robert Walton, rescued the doctor in the icy wilderness then heard a good tale of his own. He wrote to his sister with some interesting observations.

Robert comes home but then leaves again, returning to the North Pole, and this time, things won’t go so well for him. He finds himself in a dire situation, and the “monster” approaches him. From here, we get his side of the story.

The tone of this writing gives the feel of the era without being too much. It is a quick-paced account, and the years fly by within a few pages. However, not a lot happens until half-way through. I found myself wishing more of the main action was mixed in with the mundane details. Character development is good for such a short rendition. We get to know the characters with a few well-chosen words, and come to understand them.

The story may be short, but it was worth peeking into the life of a legend and hearing a new account of what “really” happened.

Can Ashley avoid the wrath of the Time Institute while keeping the man she loves alive?

A major road trip adventure, this story does a fine job displaying quirky people and the problems they encounter in their epic quest across an ancient land. Modern-day Ashley goes back in time and is married to her hero, Alexander the Great. What could possibly happen here?

Legends of Persia is the second in this series, continuing the story of Alexander expanding his kingdom while searching for his and Ashley’s kidnapped son. What a man won’t go through to save his boy. Because there are many battles to go through over the years, Alexander gets seriously hurt, more than once. His recovery, and Ashley’s responses, are one of many good ways a reader gets to know them better. However, serious injuries are only one way we get to know them and their friends and enemies. The human relationships between exotic characters bring interesting scenarios to light. Ashley has to face her husband taking yet another wife because history says he married this other woman and fathered her children—to interfere could get Ashley eliminated from time as a punishment. What does she think as she stands and watches this wedding? What does Alexander think? The unrolling of episodes such as this is woven skillfully through the story.

This is not technically a romance. True, Ashley and Alexander are married and in love, and they act like it, but they are not alone in the relationship. He has other wives, and she has another lover. There is jealousy but not enough to destroy the main relationship. This novel is also very spicy, with unconventional and very hot love scenes. If one is offended by non-traditional “love scenes”, this would not be the book to read. If a reader doesn’t mind this or can get past it, then it becomes obvious that the scenes either develop the plot or the characters or simply just show life as it was thousands of years ago, with different human values.

Customs and values change, but human emotions are the same, and this comes out. Though, those human emotions go through the filter of a different culture and time and can inspire eye-opening revelations.

At first, I found myself wondering at times if what happened in the book was good for the characters, but the way these types of scenes are written, it becomes clear that they are appropriate for the setting and the characters. Put in this context, our concepts of feelings such a love may widen upon reading about these complex love relationships.

Mundane details like meals are delightful for putting us in average scenes, making them more realistic. There are good details about different types of festivals with one memorable and spicy festival in particular—not for the squeamish. Other scenes, like a rape, are offensive in themselves, but how do the characters handle them? A reader will keep turning pages to find out.

Deep ponderings come up. Alexander talks about descendants and ancestors—food for thought. Even though this is a road trip, with battles and big things happening around the interesting details of everyday life, in the background there is a sense of urgency behind this story. Ashley knows that Alexander dies young, and she knows when. As each passing year happens, she feels fate pushing down upon them.

This story will have a reader reconsidering conceptions of several things. It ends on a calm note with the promise of great adventure ahead. I would recommend this story to anyone who would enjoy unconventional but deep love with some violence mixed in, with a story that does a good job with character development and world-building.
