One of the things I enjoy the most about zombie stories is seeing how the characters adjust to living with such a dangerous threat. Ms. Chenery’s approach to this topic was unique given that no one in Jerrica’s village can remember what life was like before the zombie invasion. It’s such a normal part of their existence that these characters are accustomed to things that I would find pretty scary in real life. Comparing their reactions to how I imagine I’d would approach certain situations was quite fascinating.

I would have liked to get to know Jerrica better. So much time was spent focusing on the romantic elements of the plot that I had trouble getting to know her as an individual. After finishing the last chapter, I’d still be hard-pressed to describe her personality or list her interests outside of her relationship with Calan. The passages that are dedicated to her interest in archery are intriguing, and I would have really enjoyed it if they could have been expanded.

The descriptions of the village where everyone lives made me want to learn more about it. Growing up in such a rigid society can feel stifling under the best circumstances, but what makes Jerrica’s situation unique is that she knows she’ll never be able to move away due to how dangerous it is in the outside world. I was even more intrigued by the rationale her parents and the other adults use for all of the rules they’ve created. I sympathized with their points of view almost as much as I did with the main character.

This book would have benefitted from another round of editing. There were multiple instances of run-on sentences and punctuation errors. While I generally understood what the sentences were trying to say, it was distracting to pause and figure so many of them out.

It took some time to figure out the most appropriate age recommendation. Jerrica is 18 when the plot begins, but she comes across as someone several years younger than her chronological age. Her innocent reactions to the opposite sex in particular felt like they belonged to someone in her early teens. There are some violent scenes, though, and the inclusion of them makes this book a better choice for high school aged readers.

I’d recommend Werewolf Defender to anyone who enjoys paranormal romance novels. This is a good introduction to that genre for young adult readers.

The opening had me turning the pages because I wasn’t quite sure what was going on but then a whole world of shape shifting wolves and danger emerged.

The hero, Mackenzie (or Mac), is very likeable from the beginning. In fact, you’re pulling for him rather than Tala, the heroine, when they first come together in this story. They have a history and that’s what drives the first third of this book. . There’s lots of passion, sexual tension, and yes, hot sex scenes in Alpha’s Flame.

Ms. Turner slowly reveals the character of Tala,  who she is and why she’s been visiting Mac over the years. Suddenly you start cheering her on too. This story is part adventure, part fantasy with lots of well-drawn characters thrown into the mix. Mac’s transformation into wolf is one of the best parts and well described. The dialogue is very natural sounding and the make believe world is one that I could picture in my mind.

There are also some other paranormal creatures in the story too, and I assume by the ending and the sub-title Council of Wolves, Ms. Turner intends to continue with the story line. I hope so because I’d like to see where she takes some of this story threads next.

Having read Wild Craving, the first book in this Canyon Creek Wolves series, I was eager to read this one too. It didn’t disappoint me in any way, and in fact, I liked it even more than the first story.

The opening pulled me in immediately. A woman lost in the snow in the Montana Wilderness and Cyrus, brother number two of the Canyon Creek Wolves, offering to go look for her. He’s a likeable character and in a way, came across as a lot more vulnerable than his older sibling in book one.

I was hoping to see more of the other brothers in this book and Ms. Chenery didn’t disappoint. They show up and get involved in their usual antics which adds to some comic relief.

Just like the first book, there’s sexual tension and a build up to the first sex scene. Shyla is also a likeable character but you know things aren’t going to go smoothly once she finds out that the hunk she’s fallen big time for, is a wolf shape shifter.

The dark moment, was just that and like Cyrus’ dad suggests that he go after his mate, I found myself willing Cyrus to do just that. I won’t give away the ending, although I can assure you it’s a happy one.

Now I’m looking forward to reading the third book in the series.

If you like wolf shape shifter stories and don’t have time for a full length novel, I think you’ll enjoy this series.

I know this is a paranormal story but I think with more time between them meeting and her finding out the truth about him, this would have been a stronger story with less need for coincidences.

However, I did enjoy this story and it kept me turning the pages. The dialogue is great and the secondary characters, including Kiel’s siblings, were fun to read about. In fact, I’ll be looking out for more books in this series just to see what happens to them.

If you need something quick to satisfy your craving for a sexy wolf shifter this might be a good pick for you.
