After finding his Master cheating on him, Rusty leaves with only his phone, keys and the clothes he’s wearing – devastated by the betrayal and his shock. Staying with his friends, Marcus and Jim while he finds his feet, Rusty is struggling to regain his confidence. At the Halloween party at the Hammer, Rusty meets Karl, a gentle Master who has struggled himself to find a compatible partner as much of his work keeps him away from home while he helps set up Haunted Houses across the country. Can these two men find something special this holiday period?

I’m a big fan of Sean Michael’s Hammer stories and was really pleased to find this was a full length novel. While the short-stories are always fun and a great, quick read, I really appreciated how the longer length allowed the author to spend a bit more time setting up the relationship and dynamics between Rusty and Karl. I was also pleased – but a little surprised – how while the relationship is certainly set in the BDSM lifestyle both Karl and Rusty were looking for something a little different. Rather than the usual heavy kink and envelope-pushing aspects of BDSM both the main characters were into something just a little bit more gentle. I was pleased that a lot of the less-portrayed aspects of the lifestyle were front and center in this story. Critical aspects like communication, creating rules and boundaries and discussing scenes and what each of them were seeking to have satisfied from both the lifestyle and their relationship.

While none of these things are new or different, I find in most BDSM stories they are often overlooked, or just mentioned for a fleeting second in passing then mostly ignored. Having them be critical to both Rusty and Karl – and some of the other more subtle aspects of the lifestyle – be the important aspects for our heroes really meant these things were in the spotlight and given a lot of time and space in the story and I found this really refreshing. While not as heavily kinky or envelope pushing as other aspects to the BDSM lifestyle I was pleased to see this slightly different relationship unfurl and grow. It was lovely to watch and I found myself eagerly turning the pages.

Readers who are looking to dip a toe into a BDSM story should find this really suits their tastes. While there is kink and plenty of sex this isn’t a hard or harsh story that is right on the edge. This is predominantly a love story to my mind – the slow, delicious drop between two men interested in the BDSM lifestyle who get to know each other and start to mesh their lives together and work out a lovely, deep, emotional relationship.

Sexy, romantic and realistic, I really enjoyed this steamy hot story.

Randall had left his family and old life – one in the closet – behind and while he was nervous and felt lost something about King, his strength and confidence drew Randall. Can they find some magic this Christmas?

I enjoyed this Christmassy short story. While a few of the previous couples are mentioned in relation to the potion store Start Me Up this book can totally be read as a stand alone and I had no problems following along with it having not read any of the previous stories. I enjoyed that despite the short length of the story the author gave a fair bit of time at the start to properly introduce King and Randall’s characters, this helped me get a good feel for what they’re like and where they are at in their respective lives so as they slowly became more attached to each other their relationship felt more realistic and understandable to me.

I was pleased the author managed to explain most of the “magic” or paranormal aspect of this story without info-dumping or bogging the pace of the plot down. It was quite unconventional but I enjoyed it and while I feel readers will definitely need to suspend their disbelief – Christmas magic and a bit of “love conquers all” is never a bad thing in a romance story to my mind.

Readers looking for an intensely erotic story might not be satisfied with the two quick sex scenes. Personally I felt the blossoming relationship between King and Randall, as well as the paranormal/magical element to the story and the rest of the plot was more interesting and important than a second or third sex scene between the two men. Especially considering the short length to the story I feel the author managed to balance all these elements really well – but for an “erotic romance” even though the sex was steamy and sensual I could understand if this might not be satisfying for everyone.

Christmassy and full of magic and the first blush of a new relationship I enjoyed this happy and short story.

Alex Malachi wants a sub, but not just any girl. He needs the right one. The moment he sees Jessie, he knows he’s found the perfect sub. He won’t stop until she’s his.

Jessie Brown’s been in lust with Alex Malachi since she started working at his BDSM club, Indigo. When he requests her services, she can’t refuse. Things get steamy very quickly – but when she realises Jessie’s dad owes Alex a ton of money will they be able to work things out without either of them being hurt?

I found this to be a steamy and kinky story. I enjoyed both Jessie and Alex’s characters but thought they both were just a little stereotypical. The age difference between them didn’t bother me as Jessie was a fairly mature nineteen and while Alex might have been forty both were very clearly attracted to each other and willing. There is though quite a large gap between their ages and this might not work for all readers. I was pleased that the pace of the story felt quite even to me. I appreciated how Alex and Jessie didn’t just immediately jump into kinky sex play together – though there was a blow-job which was effectively her “interview” and the chemistry between the two characters was smoking hot. The author spent a fair bit of the first quarter of the story though allowing Alex and Jessie to get the basics on each other and check they both knew exactly what they were offering and expected from each other. This helped lend a lot of believability to the story for me and I was grateful they didn’t just rush into the kink and sex.

While there were only a few secondary character, I admit I was pretty curious about them – Rona and Dante in particular. Rona seemed to be a layered and complicated character – partly stuck on Alex after they’d shared a BDSM session together many years ago but despite her sharp tongue and gruff manner I could still feel that she cared about the various girls and subs working under her at the club. I’d be interested to see if her character might be portrayed more in future stories. And Dante was one of Alex’s brothers and while the two men clashed and had what appeared to be quite a spiky relationship it’s clear Dante will have his own story down the track somewhere.

The BDSM is explicit but fairly standard for these sorts of stories – paddling, anal toys, bindings and the like. I thought the author did a good job balancing the kink and sex with the plot and character growth between Jessie and Alex. I enjoyed seeing their relationship flourish and grow and even though it’s clearly early days, by the end of the story I really felt like they had a good chance of making it work together long term.

Sexy, hot and with a realistic and interesting plot this is a great short story. I feel it should appeal to most erotic readers – especially those who like a fair bit of kinky sex in their stories or those who enjoy older men/younger women stories.

I’ve been a fan of Dick Francis’ books since my teenage years and while at first I was dubious when his son, Felix, clearly was going to take over I’m really pleased to say for the most part I find Felix Francis’ books as enjoyable as I always have found Dick’s. I think this is helped in large part by the fact these books aren’t a series. They are almost all British mysteries, and all in some way revolve around the world of horse racing – but as a person who knows very little (and cares even less) about either horses or races I still almost always find these books enjoyable.

I really enjoyed how there were quite a number of main characters thoroughly and consistently portrayed throughout the story (around a dozen or so) and I was pleased that – as usual – they were all complicated and interesting. The various webs surrounding different sections of the main family was engrossing to me and I really enjoyed the slow but steady reveals as Harry dug more into the different elements and pieced things together. I’m also not usually a fan of legal stories – but while Harry is a lawyer he’s not the usual “showing up to court” type of lawyer. Indeed, his work usually boils down to making judgment calls, giving advice and trying to sort out exactly what’s going on in tumultuous situations, so seeing him off-kilter in the racing world and trying to solve a murder was extraordinarily fun.

Readers who enjoy a strong mystery with numerous complicated characters should find this an excellent book. Despite there being dozens of stories by Dick and Felix Francis for the most part they are all individual books and so it’s never a hassle picking any of them up to read as they’re not linked in any way. I’ve been auto-buying the Francis books for years and this was yet another winner I am really pleased with.

And even her dust bunny likes him.

But a honeymoon spent retracing their footsteps leads Hannah and Elias into the twisting underground catacombs, where secrets from both their pasts will come to light—and where the energy of their clashing auras will grow hot enough to burn…

Elias Coppersmith had been interacting online with Finder online for two months. When the dreamlight worker had found his ring – a lost family heirloom – Elias wanted to continue their communication in a far more personal, and less professional, manner. Hannah had gone to great pains to keep her work persona as Finder separate from her real life, but something in her urged the lowering of her guards. Neither Hannah nor Elias expected to wake up the morning after their first dinner date in a seedy hotel room with heavy after-burn amnesia and a licence in Elias’ pocked showing they’d got married the evening before. Is the whole thing an illusion – or is something far more interesting at play?

I have to admit I’m a total sucker for all of Jayne Ann Krentz’s personas and adore her writing. I have a particularly soft spot for her paranormal/sci-fi/fantasy ish series on Harmony with her writings as Jayne Castle. I’d been holding onto this book – apparently her last under this pseudonym for quite some time – because not only did I know it would be a deliciously fun romp through her paranormal world, but the plot holds a throw-back to pretty much every “Vegas” or “hangover” style of plotline going around. I love a good Vegas/hangover/wake up married and lost kind of plotline and so I knew this would be a winner for me.

I was in no way disappointed. This story is pure gold.

It certainly fits all the “Krentz/Castle drinking game” sort of tick boxes. Strong, alpha and powerful hero, strong, intelligent and perfectly capable heroine. A good, solid mystery plot. An adorable and strongly characterized dust bunny companion. Evil henchmen and bad guys roaming around. Add in other well-used Castle elements – strong para-psyche profiles, the horrid ex who ruined the heroine’s reputation and a few mysterious artifact or three – and I can understand why some readers might feel like this is a similar story to many of her others. But when you’ve found a good formula and you can make it work, why mess with it? I loved the Vegas overtones, adored Joe (the Elvis wedding impersonator) and found the plot was well written, well paced and I did enjoy watching Elias and Hannah retrace their steps and try to work out what had happened during their disastrous first date and how they got into the pickle they awoke to find themselves in.

With vibrant characters, a good pace and a really firm, steady plot this was an exceptional book and one I was really sad to finish reading because there doesn’t appear to be more coming down the line soon. I will absolutely be rereading this – and a number of the other Castle books preceding it – and I can strongly recommend this book. It stands perfectly well by itself and can easily be read as a stand-alone book but readers familiar with Castle’s Harmony world and already enjoying the other stories in this setting should not miss this exceptional addition. Highly recommended.

But while in the middle of negotiating a deal with another MC Devil lays eyes on Destiny and instantly something different happened, Devil found himself burning for her as no other. Unable to resist, he agrees when she’s offered to sweeten the pot. Will Devil regret his bargain?

Fun and sexy, I found this to be a deliciously hot short story. While the plot isn’t anything intriguing or new, I really enjoyed Devil’s strong and confidant personality. And Destiny was a vulnerable heroine who I easily related to and I adored her resilience. Having borrowed money she knew she’d struggle to repay she didn’t cave in when the situation turned nasty on her, she held her spirit and strength close to her and continued to always look for a way out, an opportunity. This fire inside her was what first drew Devil and admittedly it’s the main aspect of Destiny’s character I really related to and loved. The chemistry between them smouldered from the beginning but I also really appreciated how the author didn’t stint on the “getting to know you” time between our two main characters. This helped make the whole story – the romance and sex in particular – feel a lot more realistic and relatable to me.

I really enjoyed how the author managed to balance the usual darker, slight edginess of a usual MC story with hope and some light. Often I find MC stories a bit too dangerous or violent for my personal tastes but I found this story really balanced well between the grittier aspects of real life – poor decisions, imperfect families and facing realities – with the more romantic hope that with trust and the right people life can be a dream and beautiful. I really enjoyed the slow dance between Devil and Destiny and how they came not only to know each other but trust and deeply love one another. The slow, steady building of their relationship was a real pleasure to watch unfold and I know I’ll enjoy this book again in the future.

The first in a new MC series I’ll be keeping an eye out for future installments and can strongly recommend this story to others, particularly those who often don’t enjoy the darker or more violent MC romances.

Emma is shocked, therefore, when it turns out one of her few friendly co-workers, Shane, has been subtly and quietly assessing the business from the ground up. And when Emma discovers it’s Shane who is their new CEO things are about to get very heated and very messy.

I really enjoyed this hotly sexy short story. While the plot wasn’t unique – it was a comfortable and well understood story for me. The old trope of business guy meets quiet but sexy colleague can never get dull and I thoroughly enjoyed this take on it. I was particularly pleased that Emma didn’t hold onto her anger with Shane’s “deception” very long. The annoyance at his not telling Emma the truth barely lasted a scene and I was really glad the author didn’t drag that aspect of the story out trying to add in conflict or tension that really wasn’t needed. I felt it highlighted Emma’s kind and generous nature that this conflict was revolved understandably and natural with a very short conversation with Shane, and felt it really showed Emma’s maturity and emotional stability the fact she could see things from Shane’s perspective and that Emma was business savvy enough to know – while not very romantic – it was the smart course of action Shane chose to pursue.

I also loved how the chemistry between the two characters practically drenched the story both before the “big reveal” of Shane’s true status and that the connection and attraction wasn’t dimmed in the slightest once he and Emma were both on the same page. The was a very small amount of kink in this luscious story (a bit of mild spanking and restraints). Readers looking for a strongly BDSM leaning story won’t find that here, but readers who enjoy a bit of role-play or “slap and tickle” should find this story has a little bit of enjoyable spice to it.

Comfortable and sexy, this is a lovely albeit quick read and one I enjoyed.

In the days of the Raj, a newly arrived Scotland Yard detective is confronted with the murder of a British official—in his mouth a note warning the British to leave India, or else . . .

Calcutta, 1919. Captain Sam Wyndham, former Scotland Yard detective, is a new arrival to Calcutta. Desperately seeking a fresh start after his experiences during the Great War, Wyndham has been recruited to head up a new post in the police force. He is immediately overwhelmed by the heady vibrancy of the tropical city, but with barely a moment to acclimatize or to deal with the ghosts that still haunt him, Wyndham is caught up in a murder investigation that threatens to destabilize a city already teetering on the brink of political insurgency.

Under tremendous pressure to solve the case before it erupts into increased violence on the streets, Wyndham and his two new colleagues—arrogant Inspector Digby and Sergeant Banerjee, one of the few Indians to be recruited into the new CID—embark on an investigation that will take them from the opulent mansions of wealthy British traders to the seedy opium dens of the city.

Captain Sam Wyndham survived the Great War only to come home to London and find his wife recently dead from influenza. Greif-stricken, his world shattered he moves to India, to join the police force in Calcutta and try to start his life once again. Only he’s thrown in the deep end of a perplexing murder case made even more complicated by not knowing the local scene or understanding who is trustworthy and who most certainly is not.

I found this to be a thoroughly amazing book that I picked up on a whim and which I eagerly devoured. Before I reached the half-way point I had already ordered the second book in the series and I fully expect to order the next two after this as well. The author manages to infuse every page with what I found to be a realistic representation of Calcutta in the years following on from the Great War. Set in 1919 I loved the historical time period – one which didn’t shy away from the culture, language or society of the times. While never used in a titillating manner, arrogant British ex-pats called the native locals “wog” or “coolie” and people were treated both by perceived class and race. Considering the time and historical data I found the book to be accurate but with a decent flair for the fictional story as well. I thought the author did an amazing job with this – realistic enough for me to find it thoroughly believable but not rubbing the reader’s face in the less-than-romantic aspects of how humans treated each other a hundred years ago.

Readers looking for a vibrant historical mystery they can really sink into should find this suits their needs admirably. Indeed the mystery plot itself – which I found both interesting and complex – was not so dense or difficult that it over-took the historical setting, nor the fact this story was fully told in the Raj’s Calcutta. I loved the world-building and air the author gave this story. Despite my modern surroundings I frequently fell into the story and could hear the sounds and smell the scents described – I found the whole book thoroughly addictive and am eager for the next installment.

I found the main characters all well layered and interesting. While a number of the central characters felt somewhat cookie-cutter in their stereotypes this didn’t detract from my enjoyment mainly because I feel this adds to some of the genuineness of the time and place the story is held. I also really appreciated how Captain Wyndham – while more enlightened and open-minded than many of his contemporaries – was not some perfect hero on a pedestal. He had emotional and mental wounds from the First World War, not to mention a slight addiction to opiates left over from his recovery from both the War and the devastating death of his wife. Additionally, I found it quite refreshing that Captain Wyndham – fresh off the boat from London – didn’t have a network of spies or helpers when it came to his work as a policeman. Indeed I was impressed the author had Wyndham floundering somewhat for much of the story trying to piece together the political and policing landscape of the new country and culture he found himself in. This is not some mythical grand detective, but a man with flaws as well as a great character and open mind.

This is an interesting and slow-burn mystery novel set in Calcutta in 1919 and I adored every moment. I will be re-reading it again while I wait for the second book in the series to arrive and plan to promptly order the rest of the series. Readers looking for a strongly atmospheric, historical, straight mystery story should not be disappointed in this book. I highly recommend it to all readers.

The still-fresh memories of the threesome they had all shared that single, long-ago night rock Laine and she misses Toshi – and Mason – even more than ever. On Halloween, when the veil is particularly thin, could this be their second chance to get it right?

I really enjoyed this emotional and paranormal threesome story. Get the tissues handy – I can’t recall the last time I cried while reading a good book but this one had me all teary and emotional. Moving and sensual with both hope but also a good dollop of “what could have been” this book really tugged at my heartstrings.

While the threesome sex scene is smoking hot, I have to admit that a drink or two might be needed to suspend disbelief enough to roll with the ghostlike/paranormal aspects to the story. I really loved this short story was more about letting old regrets and missed chances go to rest rather than a strongly build alternate reality. Just relax and go with it. I certainly found that the interactions between the three main characters and the deeply emotional connections tying them all together was well worth a bit of unrealistic plot.

I also felt a minor niggle that even after ten years of grieving and trying to move on – both Mason and Liane were fully grown adults of twenty eight – they still hadn’t reached out to each other to either repair their friendship or at least answer the hurts and emotional wounds they each still carried. Neither of them had changed phone numbers and both admitted had they tried to communicate together they could have – but neither had even tried. That rankled with me a bit – why on earth wait ten years? – but again the connection and chemistry between the three characters, the emotional release of them having one last time together and rebuilding together was so sweet and well written I could overlook these niggles.

I personally really loved this short story though I can understand it might not be every readers favourite. I enjoyed the nostalgia, the deep emotions and the clean pain of releasing deep, old, scarred wounds. For an atmospheric, All Hallows Eve story and a quick, sexy read I found this to be lovely.

Mary Ann Wilson, who lived a life which was proper and palatable; had dormant longings of salaciousness resurrected in the presence of a stranger. His name was Brink. And, this man lived up to his name in taking this tepid housewife willingly into that void of the unknown.

On this cul-de-sac of Chamberlain Court, borrowing a cup of sugar was just the beginning of getting to know your neighbors better.

Brink is a Dom and unashamed of his sexual needs and desires. Will Mary Ann regret her eagerness to welcome their new neighbor onto their street?

I found this to be an interesting short story. The writing style is different to most stories I am used to – quite sparse and succinct. While I often enjoy this style for gritty or noir mystery stories – the lack of description and short, punchy style of writing really lends a tense, terse sort of atmosphere perfect for harder types of mystery or detective stories – I’m not sure this writing style is really suited for romance stories, even erotic ones. With so little detail and a snappy, very bare sort of “voice” it was quite difficult for me to get a good feel for Mary Ann and her personality. While as the reader I certainly knew the basics – she was a mother really feeling her empty nest and searching for a new path in her life – I didn’t get a good understanding of her character until quite a long way into the short story.

Readers looking for a slightly grittier and short story written very leanly should find this writing style suits their tastes. I also feel those looking for a more romantic or softer style of story might not find what they need here. Mary Ann is mostly happily married and indeed remains with her husband – her deal with Brink is quite clear and only to train her in the lifestyle of a part-time submissive. This isn’t an affair of the heart, and in many ways their relationship isn’t considered cheating to either Mary Ann or Brink. While they are physically and sexually intimate Mary Ann and Brink have a clear contract outlining their sessions and what is and isn’t acceptable and what they each wish to achieve with the other.

There are also a few scenes between Brink and his main submissive, Mimi. I feel only readers who enjoy harder edged – more erotic rather than romantic – stories will enjoy the scenes of Mimi pushing her relationship boundaries with Brink and the resulting punishment. I found the harder edge of these scenes coupled with the lean writing style really made this story more a piece of short erotica and not really romantic or sensual. It was hard for me to feel the emotional ties and feelings connecting the main characters to each other and so I feel this story won’t be to everyone’s tastes.

Those looking for something edgier or different from the usual short story should certainly give this a try. While I don’t feel it will be suitable for all readers it was a good, fresh and different read.
