A new city and unexpected freedom give Andrea the fresh start she craved, but her haunting past threatens to unrest an already tangled future. In this tense and emotionally stirring sequel to Forgiven Are the Starry-Eyed, Awakened will leave you breathless as it navigates the heartbreaking disquiet of one survivor’s scattered and uncertain path towards healing.

Healing can be hard work, but it’s always worth it.

Andrea had a wonderful support system. Some of my favorite scenes were the ones that showed how her parents and two best friends reacted to her when she was really struggling with her mental health. They were so kind and compassionate even when they didn’t always necessarily understand why she was behaving the way that she did.

This book’s depiction of the trauma, anxiety, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Andrea faced as a result of the abusive relationship she was in when I first met her was realistic and well written. Healing can be a painfully slow process sometimes, and I appreciated the fact that the author was so honest about that. There were times when I wanted to hug the main character and other scenes when I wished I could drive her to a therapy appointment myself.

My review of the first instalment of this series mentioned some pacing issues I noticed in it. I was quite pleased with the fast but even pacing this time around! Naturally, there were times in Andrea’s life when things were quieter or busier than usual, but I always felt like I had exactly the right amount of time with her no matter what she was going through. It’s a thrill to give a five-star rating to an author the second time around, and I’m excited to do it for her today. She did a wonderful job smoothing out the pacing and keeping this reader sitting on the edge of my seat from the first scene to the last one.

This is the sequel to Forgiven Are the Starry-Eyed. I’d strongly recommend reading this series in order due to how much character development takes place during it.

Awakened Are the Starry-Eyed should be read by anyone who is interested in a compelling example of what life can be like after escaping an abusive relationship.

When two strangers meet outside a fertility clinic, sparks fly. Jared has always wanted to be a father, but the right woman has never come around.

Meredith has always been used to disappointment. A baby is something she can’t make alone, so going to the clinic is her only choice. The moment Jared sees her, he wants her, giving her an alternative option.

He wants this baby the natural way, so she’s going to have to sleep with him. And he wants to be part of his baby’s life. Meredith is willing to do whatever it takes, but she doesn’t expect to fall in love. But Jared isn’t the cold, heartless man she expected, and he makes her glow.

When his family tries to tear them apart, Jared vows to keep Meredith in his life. She’s the family he wants, and no one is getting in the way.

Meredith wanted to be a mother very badly. With no daddy prospects in sight though she finds herself in the sperm bank hoping to go it alone. While there she meets Jared, who had been visiting to try and find out how to go about hiring a surrogate mother. Jared felt an instant attraction to Meredith and considering they both want the exact same thing Meredith is finding it hard to say no to Jared’s outlandish idea.

Grab a large drink, turn off your ringer, sit back and disconnect your brain. I found this to be a fabulously fun, albeit highly unlikely short story. Thankfully I didn’t need or expect realism, logic or real life when I picked up this quick read and so I adored every minute of it. Meredith and Jared are strangers – that’s why she doesn’t initially know he’s a multi-millionaire and in charge of his own company from an exceptionally large and even more wealthy family. Jared wants a baby and a family of his own and isn’t going to let pesky details – like the many compromises, problems, difficulties and small facets of conceiving a baby then raising it to adulthood – get in his way. They both want a baby and Meredith is attracted enough to Jared to let herself be talked into doing it the old fashioned way, in bed. Let the bedroom shenanigans and heart-wrenching emotion begin.

Readers looking for a light hearted, fast paced and intimately graphic short story should find this an excellent read. I felt an immediate empathy with Meredith who I found to be relatable and somewhat sensible and practical. Jared was one handsome and smooth-talking hero and while I didn’t warm to him immediately in the same way I did Meredith I did enjoy him and found myself really growing to like him as much as I initially hoped for. After the first few pages I realized I needed to leave realism and logic at the door but the lack of logic didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the story once I embraced it.

Meredith and Jared were interesting and vibrant characters, the situation they found themselves in (crazy as it was) was something I feel most people could understand and relate to. Add in a bunch of chemistry and a real and honest desire to be parents and this was a fun and enjoyable read.

Remi can feel the presence of a ghost lurking, lying in wait to destroy the life she’s building with Sarina. She knows her own fears are part of the danger that could prevent her from being happy.

Then, the ghost makes his first move, and Remi is certain it’s only the first wave and prepares to deal with the trouble before it turns into a nightmare. But what Remi doesn’t know is there’s shadow with a twisted plan of its own. So, as Remi lays her plan, the shadow makes moves that plunge Remi into the middle of a murder investigation that tears the scab off old wounds and reveals dark secrets bound to destroy two families.

As she navigates the murky waters, Sarina is kidnapped, and Remi is prepared to do whatever it takes to get Sarina back and close the doors of the past for good.

The Poison of Bitterness is fifth in the Cozy Bend mystery series, but as a novel it can surely stand on its own. Main characters Remi and Sarina have already been through their fair share of struggles within the town’s limits, but little do they know that trying to plan a wedding with their two best friends will be the least of their problems!

While the heat between Remi and Sarina is scorching, will they be able to take it when their enemies begin to rain fire over them? Each moment of the novel feels like standing on the edge of the unknown, wondering if they will make it out unscathed. Remi and Sarina as characters are written with very strong opposing characteristics, but somehow it is those differences that pull them together in their relationship. Sarina’s extreme patience and independence is the perfect match for Remi’s hot temper and suspicious mind. While things often come to a head between them, Sarina is always able to communicate with Remi and help her away from her dark past and her trust issues.

They also have zero issues communicating in the bedroom. The few steamy scenes we were gifted throughout the book show the established trust between the two that might be questioned elsewhere within the novel. As two powerful women, the ‘strong heroine lead’ role is not just fulfilled by one of them, but rather they split the lead with their own unique characteristics. This power dynamic is also fully alive and visible in their relationship as well. The partnership is completely 50-50, even if control is oftentimes given to Remi in the bedroom.

The story was very fast-paced, and at moments I think the action could have been fleshed out a bit more and extended, just to really seal in that suspense. But all in all, this story had just the right amount of tension. Serenity Snow was able to pack a lifetime in 30 chapters, leaving no stone unturned, and no women unsatisfied.

I have only read this book of the series, but I would like to go back and read the four previous. I would love to see this rubber band of tension stretched from page one! I recommend this to anyone who likes a lot of twists and turns, and powerful women.

Wolf shifters are fated with one mate. Losing your mate or refusing it causes immense pain and, in some cases, death. But what if fate gives you a second chance?

Payton has been on her own for longer than she can remember, even when she was still part of a pack. Being refused by her fated mate has her fleeing, starting a life of solitude away from any other shifters

Caine is the Alpha to his pack and although he loves his pack dearly, he longs for his true mate. When he catches her scent he will do everything to make her his. But can he convince her to take a chance?

While Peyton hasn’t enjoyed the last few years effectively being a servant in her Alpha’s house, she has the warm, loving memories of what her family life had been before her father had left and the life as Peyton knew it had irrevocably changed. On the morning of her eighteenth birthday she thought something might change, but she could never have guessed that it would have been her whole world shifting around. In a matter of minutes she’d discovered her one true mate only to have him refuse her and sever their bond, casting her callously aside without even attempting to try. Caine is rightful Alpha of a small pack and while he’s been desperately lonely the last eighteen months he’s determined to wait for his true mate – for the life partner the goddess has chosen for him. When Caine and Peyton find each other how will they manage to merge their two very different lives?

While I was a little disappointed that this enjoyable short story was quite predictable, I was impressed that the author managed to infuse the book with a few really interesting and relatable main characters. Peyton still held compassion and had a strong streak of independence that I really enjoyed. I was considerably relieved when Caine didn’t just beat his chest and let his ego or arrogance overtake his brain when Peyton refuse to submit immediately to his claim they were mates. I loved how Caine was willing to show and prove himself to Peyton, to show her he could support her and take some time to really get to know her and what she wanted from their relationship. This really helped sell me on the story.

There is some conflict in this short story and I thought for the most part it was handled really well. I felt the author put a really interesting twist on the end result of the conflict and could easily see how it could become important in the next few books as Caine’s brothers also find their own true mates. I feel readers looking for a unique or vastly different paranormal romance might not find themselves completely satisfied with this story but I admit I really enjoyed Peyton and Caine’s characters and found that reading their interactions was time well spent.

A fun and sexy short story this was a good paranormal romance.

Cassidy opts to spend special evenings at a high-end club and casino. His favorite part of each night is role play.

There he meets his husband Jeff —younger, slender, elegant, and classy. Their chemistry is as electrifying as always.

But Cassidy plays for keeps and while others may look, none can touch. Because at the end of the night, and every day, Jeff belongs to him.

Cassidy had heard good things about The Basement Bar – how it was for high rollers and the elite, but also how you could gamble without the usual casino atmosphere. When Jeff enters the Bar Cassidy knows immediately this is the man he wants to spend the night with, but neither man is willing to rush into anything, happy to enjoy themselves and each other’s company.

I enjoyed this sensual and fun short story. I was particularly pleased that, despite their instant and sizzling attraction, Cassidy and Jeff didn’t just blow off their night at the Bar and jump straight into bed. I was really pleased they chatted a while, drank, then had a bit of a flutter in the gambling area. This interaction between them helped me as a reader see them both and how they meshed and could potentially work together long past just a one night stand. I also adored how realistic this story was. While sure its pure fantasy material – a chance meeting in a Bar that leads to a true and real connection with someone – there was nothing that occurred in this short story that couldn’t be happening in real life every night. I really enjoyed this realism.

With an interesting and fun twist towards the end I found this to be a lovely and steamy story. Readers looking for something light and sensual, realistic but still fun should find this a quick and thoroughly enjoyable read.

I enjoyed this super steamy romance novel. Short and sweet I enjoyed the fact that Talia and Sarge had known each other – and trusted each other – for quite some time. It let me relax a bit when they hit the sheets very early on in the story and made the intensity of their lust for each other a lot more believable to me. Readers looking for an intense or complicated plot likely won’t find this story suits their needs. Steamy and full of hot bedroom action and plenty of anal play this book has an intense and explicit romance played out between Talia and Sarge as they both finally admit their attraction and act upon it.

Jared and Riker had been mated together for a number of years, both wolf-shifters and in a Dom/sub relationship everything would be perfect had they not both known categorically that they were missing a third. Their relationship was perfect except for that one missing piece and while neither of them knew exactly what it was, neither were they in any doubt when they happened by chance across Iris. Iris, a tiger shifter and a switch – enjoying both being Dominant and submissive – had struggled to form any real connection since most men didn’t know how to handle her two opposing needs. Can these three shifters merge their lives and relationships together so they all can get what they truly need?

I really enjoyed the different dynamic this story offered. While erotic threesome/ménage stories are pretty common nowadays, and shifter romances aren’t very new either, I haven’t read many ménage plotlines where one of the threesome is a proper switch. I felt that, coupled with the MMF relationship makeup – and the fact the two men were already in a long-standing, stable and BDSM style of relationship – this really helped make this story seem fresher and somewhat new to me.

I was somewhat nervous and how Iris would fit in with the dynamic already long-held and working well between Riker and Jared, but the author did a really good job handling that I felt. Jared was certainly submissive, but he wasn’t shy or uncommunicative on his feeling nor his thoughts. I definitely felt this helped ease some of the transition and smoothed some of the bumps those initial few conversations could have had between Riker and Iris. Jared was an excellent sounding board for both of them and I feel his character really was in many ways the glue that helped form their bond and keep any assumptions or miscommunications get out of control.

The three of them all had to walk a careful line to begin with and I thought this was handled quite well and somewhat believably. A part of me feels Iris in particular came around just a little too quickly, much of the start of the story was filled with her resisting and convincing herself that she could never really submit even though she wanted to, so to have her give in and be comfortable and happy after only a few meetings and discussions just felt a little too simple. The short length of the story though and the fact a part of her wanted to submit helped make this a little more believable but I’m not sure all readers will feel this way. The sex was deliciously hot and should really satisfy most erotica readers with a bit of BDSM heat but nothing too over the top.

Sexy and fun this short story is a great shifter, ménage, BDSM story I feel many readers should enjoy.

Hawk-shifter and Supernatural Police Force member, Theo, worked with a small team of shifters specifically tasked with helping to keep the paranormal world a secret from humans. As the team’s newbie Theo had been lumped mainly with paperwork since he joined up and so he’s itching to get out into the field and doing some real work. When a poisoning case hits the morgue, Theo’s ex-girlfriend – a spider-shifter – is under suspicion so even though he’s been hungering for a case of his own, Theo isn’t sure this is quite how he wanted to begin his new career. The fact the flames still burn brightly between Theo and Ava doesn’t make it easier on either of them.

I really enjoyed this paranormal mystery. I feel the history between Ava and Theo helped sell me a lot on the speed of their reconnecting, plus I just enjoyed how they both seemed to have fond – and maybe even slightly wistful – memories of each other. There wasn’t too much baggage or hurt feelings to overcome between them and that really helped clear the plot and resurgence of their relationship to me. There was plenty of conflict and tension in the plot with the murder mystery and trying to work out who wanted to set Ava up for a murder she didn’t commit, I didn’t feel there needed to be any conflict or baggage bleeding over from this into Ava and Theo reconnecting so I was really pleased with how the author handled this.

I admit I found Ava and Theo’s shifter aspects a bit of a stretch for my mind in the beginning. I don’t believe I’ve ever read a spider-shifter story before (romantic or not) and I know I’ve only read one or two hawk shifter stories in the past, they’re both pretty uncommon and it took me a little while to get into the groove of them. That said, once I did wrap my mind around it, I found the whole paranormal world and the experiences of Ava and Theo in particular to be really refreshing and a lovely, unique set of examples. In many ways the whole paranormal genre has come close (for me, personally) to reaching saturation point. So many plots and pairings and situations just feel so well-worn it’s hard sometimes to read “yet another hunt-the-killer-shifter” style of story, but having fun and relatable characters as well as such different shifter types really helped freshen this up for me and I really enjoyed it once I got into the swing of things.

With an intense and really enjoyable plot and a lovely steamy romance this is a great, quick read and an author I really enjoyed. I’ll be checking more stories in this series out. Recommended.

But when later Devin and Justin meet again at the club Justin is no longer in his uniform and the two men don’t have to keep their exchange brief and professional any longer.

I really enjoyed the writing style of this short and sexy story. I felt a connection to Devin straight away – pleased that the opening scene of being pulled over and really nervous about it was something so utterly relatable. It helped really set the mood for me but also let me feel a good empathy and connection with Devin’s character. I was jolted out of the story a few times by some typos/editing errors near the start of the book, but overall I really enjoyed Devin’s story.

I loved how even though he could be brave and confidant as Miss Teaque (his drag queen alter ego) Devin also was still the somewhat shy young guy inside who let himself be bullied around by his mother. This contrast was part of what made Devin so realistic and enjoyable to me. Devin is still trying to sort himself out and find his way and watching him blossom was really lovely. I found the plotline surrounding Devin’s mother a little cliched – but this in no way detracted from my enjoyment of the story as Devin and Justin’s connection – and Devin’s relationship with his brother – together more than made up for this.

I particularly loved how Devin and Justin took some time to get to know each other outside of the bedroom before they became physically intimate. While the sex was a little kinky and super hot when they got there, the connection between Devin and Justin felt deeper and more realistic for them actually trying to get to know each other first and not just having sex as soon as they connected. This really helped sell me on the potential longevity of their relationship and left me with a really good feeling about them both.

Sexy, light and fun this is a good short story.

Feeling an immediate connection, Marcus offers Kody not only his freedom, but protection in Marcus’ own group of friends that has formed their own pack together. Kody is nervous but willing to trust Marcus. Can they make something together?

I enjoyed this fast-paced short story. While I understand the author hurrying the plotline along because of the short length of the story, I would have appreciated Marcus and Kody’s relationship having a little bit more time to develop. I was very grateful they didn’t jump immediately into bed together – Kody absolutely wasn’t ready for physical intimacy after being held captive – but with a few interweaving plotlines I was left feeling as if the whole story was just rushed a little too much.

I guessed much of the plot between Kody’s abusers and one of Marcus’ family members and felt it was a little bit cliched. Again, with such a short page-count there wasn’t a huge amount of time for the author to really delve into a heavy plot or a complicated series of events, but I feel perhaps if one of the plotlines had been cut this might have made room to better flesh out (and finish) the remaining plot and still devote a decent amount of space to Kody and Marcus starting their new relationship.

I was surprised, though, that the author left some of the plot dangling unresolved, which really surprised me. Readers looking for an intricate or freshly different storyline won’t find that here and while Marcus and Kody’s relationship is completed and solidified, not all of the plot has that satisfying feeling of being finished. I did, however, enjoy Marcus and Kody’s characters and the small family Marcus had built from various friends, family and others. The characters really shine in this story and I thoroughly enjoyed them.

A fun and easy paranormal short story, this was a good, quick read.
