Hell on Earth is book two in the Hellscape series by Ally Blue, however, newcomers to the series do not need to read the first book to understand this one. The first book in the series introduces the main character Sandman but focuses more on other characters and the political climate of Hell’s End. In this book the same world building applies but it’s used in much more general ways. It’s still a dystopian/futuristic world where politics are too confusing to follow, though the general vices of greed, cruelty, and heinous acts to the poor still apply. The focus on this second book is the relationship between Vijay and Sandman as they navigate through unfamiliar lands and people. The plot keeps the tension high and action nearly constant to help cover some of the holes in the world building.

If the world building isn’t as strong as it was in the first book, the characterization is better this round. Both Sandman and Vijay leap off the page with their complexity and hot passion. There are a couple of scenes that threw me, mostly because I am not a fan of rimming and I couldn’t stop thinking about how hygiene in a post-apocalyptic world is simply non-existent so… we’ll just say that didn’t work for me. Other than that I really quite enjoyed the couple together and was quickly invested in their outcome as individuals and a couple. They are very nuanced characters with a lot of depth. Thankfully the same can be said of the supporting cast. Although quite large, I identified most of the secondary characters and could remember them as well.

I actually liked the second book in the series more than first because I connected with the protagonists as a couple much more. Plus the non-stop action really kept the pages turning and my attention nearly glued to the story. I would sit to read for 10 minutes and not look up for an hour or more, unaware of the time flying by. To me, that’s a great story. I always look for those stories that I can engage and immerse myself in the created world. I personally love post-apoc fiction so keep that in mind but science fiction fans would probably really enjoy this offering. You don’t need to have read the previous book to catch up and follow along on this one and arguably; this is actually a better book to start. At least in my opinion.

Each book could be read as a stand alone and DR is no different as there is more than enough background to catch readers up but as with any series, reading from the beginning will deepen the understanding of the characters and plot. Ultimately it’s best to read all the books in order to get the most enjoyment out of the series. Here in the fifth book the action stays high and Jane seems to be losing friends and lovers at a fast rate. The plot is engaging and the mystery is pretty good. There aren’t enough clues to guess the twists before they happen – and there are numerous turns in the plot, which keeps things exciting. The unknown disease angle is unique and inventive, though it does kind of disappear towards the end of the book with so much going on.

The greatest aspect of the story, however, is Jane’s connection to the people around her. I really quite liked this book in the series and found myself oddly sympathetic towards Jane and her struggles. She has way too many men around her and her inner beast apparently claims them all, which had me rolling my eyes once too often. Additionally Jane acquires two new men for her business of enforcing vamps and I really liked their personalities. I hope they stick around and the older one is not interested in Jane. I had some qualms with how Jane acted around Bruiser in this one. Not to give spoilers but I felt as though she was constantly in heat around him, often ignoring very perilous circumstances. She also never really got mad at him even though it’s well beyond justified. I loved how the book ended, kind of a cliffhanger but kind of not, because it sets up a lot of tension for the next book.

As part of the series, Death’s Rival fits in really great. There is further characterization in some really interesting ways and the men around Jane continue to grow and become more than just another man in love with her. The plot is solid and acts as an engaging backdrop to the personal and political drama that makes up the world building around Jane and the vampires. The series continues to build tension and create road blocks the characters will have to tackle in the future so it makes me eager and curious to continue reading. This is one of the more interesting series I’ve read in a while and I’m just as invested as I am in the Mercy Thompson series. So fans of MT should definitely give this one a try. Those who already read the series should eagerly dive into Death’s Rival, it’s that good.

He could already see them in a relationship and happy together. Unfortunately Alfie was too terrified of his past demons to see the same future so instead he chained Christian in the basement. Most people would have been understandably upset and freaked out at the turn of events but soon Christian realizes that he wanted to stay with Alfie anyway. Now he just needs to find a way to show Alfie the truth.

The Man He Needs is a very thought provoking novella. It’s too short to really develop the characters fully and the interactions between the two are minimal unfortunately. The main thrust of the story takes place in Christian’s head with a significant portion dedicated to Alfie recounting his sad history of relationships. Christian is the first person narrator and it’s hard to engage with his voice. I didn’t really understand what was going on initially and how long he had been held prisoner but eventually the details sort themselves out. Even still most of the story is told in Christian’s head and I didn’t really understand nor like the character. He recounts, for Alfie, a story about his last boyfriend beating him viciously and how he crawled away wondering why he was always a victim. He has a very “why me” attitude while repeating the same behavior that got him in trouble in the first place.

Granted, he couldn’t know that Alfie would hold him hostage so I can’t hold him responsible for that yet I still didn’t warm to him. Alfie is an easier character to pity with a horrible childhood and a pattern of men leaving him for being too clingy and needing love. And I did pity Alfie, considerably, so I was happy to see the two men work things out and realize their needs were very suited for each other. That said, the whole thing was definitely illegal and kind of freaky, not at all non-con in a sexy way; more of a border line serial killer way. However, it does end with a happy ever after so perhaps it doesn’t matter how it got there.

I found The Man He Needs to be a different story featuring two very emotionally damaged men. I think the success to the story for readers may lie in their ability to suspend disbelief. It’s hard to imagine that even though Christian liked Alfie, he would still have all those positive feelings after being chained in the basement for a month. Though perhaps true love really does win!

The events happening in Lance’s book start before the second book, Champion which is Danny’s story, and continue on past the point where Danny and Cash fall in love. So the third book kind of starts before the second but ends after that. It’s a little confusing for anyone really familiar with the time line and I’m not sure why the author made that choice. Regardless fans of the series will want to see Lance get his happy ending, no matter what order it happens.

In this book the narrative jumps back and forth between the present and past. The scenes of the past show how Gordon and Lance got together the first time and what went wrong with their relationship. It’s more complicated and nuanced than just one event so it’s important to show the full extent of their previous relationship so readers can appreciate the true depth of feeling between the men and that the reconciliation is not simply a matter of forgiveness. I do think the story spent too long showing how the previous relationship fell apart and not enough time showing how they, as a reunited couple, would avoid those particular problems in the future.

This back and forth is not a new technique but it is employed infrequently so I appreciated the novelty of it, however, I honestly would have liked reading the story in a more linear fashion starting with building the relationship to break it down then rebuild it. The story as it is, is very entertaining and easy to read, as are all the books in Mykles rocker series. They read like popcorn reads – light, fun, and quick with no guilt. It’s definitely not the best thing she’s ever written but the formula she uses for these books is familiar and almost always works so it’s an easy book to recommend to fans.
