Marcia’s parents, however, have a different idea. When the Duke of Lisle makes an offer of marriage, they accept, and inform Marcia that she is to be wed soon. Marcia, who has never even met the duke, is crushed as she wanted a love match, not a stranger. In the past, she has managed to get her way by manipulating her parents, but in this, they are firmly united in their decision. Though they aren’t being intentionally cruel, they want to see her settled. And, after all, he’s a DUKE! The arrogant duke, though, is too busy to meet her right now. He can only fit two events in his busy schedule to make her acquaintance before their wedding.

Soon, gifts begin to arrive for Marcia, not from the duke, but a man just identifying himself as her admirer. At a ball, the mystery man finally approaches her, but in a way that she can’t clearly see him. However, she can feel him, and his kisses. More gifts arrive, and more secret encounters occur. Marcia is smitten by her secret admirer, though she has yet to actually see his face. Eventually, she meets her fiance, who appears just as arrogant and condescending as she imagined. He takes his time strolling across the floor to meet her, and shows no particular regard, acting almost bored, and very highbrow. How can she possibly wed this man when she is falling in love with another? I found myself not liking him overly much.

Marcia has a choice to make. Her mystery man has offered to whisk her away before her wedding. She’s found her heart’s desire, but how can she live with ruining her parents’ hopes? I give Marcia credit for recognizing the damage jilting a duke will do to her reputation. She’s kind enough to care about how this would affect her parents. The mystery man has been clever enough to appeal to Marcia’s desire for adventure, as well as to her emotions.

I enjoyed this quick and delightful read. Though short, the story was detailed enough to let me get to know the heroine, and feel her anguish over duty versus romance. And though a mystery, the Admirer was very appealing. He also made me wonder just exactly what it was he was hiding. The twist at the end leads to a satisfactory happy ever after, and I guarantee it will leave you smiling.

As they were dancing, she notices Paul leaving, and actually has to fight back tears. She never knew who he was, or saw him for the rest of the season. Months have passed, and neither of them has stopped thinking of the other, wishing they could have met. It’s now Christmas time, and Samantha is visiting her sister. In order to escape her sister’s incessant matchmaking, she dresses up as a boy, and goes out riding. The weather starts to get bad, and she gets thrown off the horse. She sees a small cottage and seeks shelter there. Who should be in the cottage, but the mystery man she’s been pining over!

For a short story, we get a lot of insight into the character of both the hero and heroine. Samantha is kind, tender hearted and romantic. Paul is a gentleman, considerate, and just a tad wicked. Cynthia Moore does a very good job of letting you feel their emotions, and making you root for their happy ever after. The story flows along nicely, and has a very satisfying conclusion. If you like a sweet romance that will put you in a holiday mood, this may be the book for you. I enjoyed it, and recommend it.

The Earl, Anthony, is a complex character. There are some tragic events in his past that have changed him. Although he is still mostly a kind man, he also is dominating and controlling. And he’s determined to flee any kind of emotional entanglement. After just one night, he knows he’s in danger of feeling more than just lust for Isabella, so for his own self preservation, he sends her away, but with a small fortune in jewels. Isabella is bewildered at being cast aside. Although she had been married, it was very brief, and she didn’t have much sexual experience. One night with Anthony gave her a whole new perspective, but she accepts that it’s probably for the best, so she uses the jewels to start a small book store and set up a new home for her and her sisters. But Anthony can’t stay away.

I found Anthony to be a real hero. I love his strength, his protectiveness of Isabella. He is off the charts HOT! Isabella was so well written, as well. She is honest, beautiful, loving, and even willing to sacrifice herself to keep her family together. There was a lot of going back and forth in this book about Isabella and Anthony being together, then not together. That’s something that normally annoys me, but in this case it just worked. The author does a great job of showing us the conflict and confusion each of them is feeling. There is also a mystery, and some danger, and it all comes together perfectly. A word of warning without giving too much away – the sex in this book is not all vanilla. If you are offended by elements of BDSM, you may want to avoid it. Normally, I wouldn’t choose to read a book with those elements, but it fits the people that Anthony and Isabella are, and it works.

This is a strong book that will go on my favorites list for this year. It’s hot, it’s emotional, it’s romantic, and the story just flows beautifully. The author, Liz Carlyle, stretched the typical boundaries of historical romance with this book, and in my opinion, it’s one of her best. It all comes down to a beautiful love story of two wounded people who are perfect for each other, and deserve their well earned happy ever after. Highly recommended!

Although she lost Stephen’s regard, she’s determined now to do better things.

A year later, Delphine is in Brussels with her sister and brother-in-law, ready to come to the aid of wounded soldiers, if need be. She encounters Stephen, who is just about to leave for battle. She sends him off with a flower and a kiss. Stephen is seriously wounded and is sent to recover with their mutual friend Nicholas Temberlay and his wife. Determined to take care of him, Delphine manages to arrange it so she is at the household at the same time. We soon find out that Stephen has been blinded, and that he has an enemy who is setting him up to be branded a thief and a coward.

Someone being falsely accused is something that always pushes my buttons. We know who the villain is right from the get go, so there’s not a mystery. But he weaves a clever plan, and at times it doesn’t look like there’s any hope. It’s particularly nasty because of the awful shape our poor hero is in. Stephen is strong, though, and begins to recover. This part of the story deals with Delphine caring for him, and their becoming very close. I like both these characters, even with their flaws. I found Delphine to be compassionate and kind underneath her social mask. But I was disappointed that as soon as she returned home, she fell right back into the same pattern. Stephen, while an admirable man, waffled a lot when it came to Delphine. He wanted her, then he pushed her away.

This is my first book by Lecia Cornwall, and I like her writing style very much. I felt the sense of urgency in the story that the villain may never be found out. I also felt the dread that our couple was never going to manage to be together. The way everything was resolved was very satisfactory, and I found myself breathing a big sigh of relief. I recommend this book for all lovers of historical romance, and I know I’ll be looking for more from this author.
