I’ve never been interested in virgins. I prefer a woman who knows how to take care of my dick and not ask for direction, but one look at her and I knew there was no going back. For months after that night, I tried to find her, but I failed. So, when I discover she’s been working at my company for the past month, I know that’s going to change. She’s going to work right beside me, and I’m going to take what belongs to me. She was a virgin—and now she’s mine.
We have unfinished business, and I don’t care what it takes to get her back in my bed. I never said I was a good guy when it came to getting what I wanted, but Faye has a way that drives me crazy. I can’t walk away from her because … I fucking love her.
Faye’s world was rocked when she discovered their stepfather had brainwashed and been sexually abusing her younger sister for years. While the bastard was in jail now, it wasn’t impossible that he might get parole and Faye is determined both she and her little sister will be far, far away by then. Needing the largest possible influx of cash in one hit to achieve this goal, Faye decides to sell off her virginity to the highest bidder and doesn’t have an ounce of regret. Chase has never had a thing for virgins, but he goes along to the club with a good friend and Faye’s photo captures something inside him. Chase can’t explain why, but virgin or not, he needs this woman and is prepared to pay whatever it takes to have her.
This isn’t a gentle or “nice” sort of book. Despite the fact it’s Faye’s first time and she willingly and knowingly sells off her viriginity, there’s a darkness that I found to this story and the author’s tone of voice that left me feeling a little unsettled. There’s no graphic descriptions of their stepfather sexually abusing Faye’s underage little sister for many years – but even the brief explanation given of that was enough to make me uncomfortable. I strongly feel readers with triggers regarding incest or abuse of children might want to consider carefully before reading this. Faye herself absolutely consents – albeit with qualm and nerves – to the night she shares with Chase. There is no heavy description of abuse or nastiness, but I really couldn’t shake the sense of darkness that seemed to hang over the story. Readers looking for a grittier, harder style of story will probably love this book. Those looking for a sweeter or more gentle style of story – or one a little lighter – might not find what they’re after here.
I found Faye to be a modern, strong and interesting character. It took me a while to understand her though, as for someone so young she seemed oddly mature and calm with so many emotionally charged things going on within her life. I think this slight lack of believability made it difficult for me to really feel attached to her as much as I wanted to. I liked her, I strongly empathized with her, but she seemed a little too calm, rational and logical given the giant upheaval in her life. I did like, however, how Chase became possessive and very alpha-male about Faye. Used to always having his way – or just buying whatever he desired – I liked how he had to come to grips a number of times with the fact that Faye wasn’t someone to be swayed by his money or power. She had her own ideas and road to travel and she wasn’t going to use her need for money to support her little sister as a bargaining chip.
A slightly dark, gritty and very emotional read, I feel this won’t hit the spot for all readers. Sexy and hot, but also to my mind, dark, this is an interesting, fresh and very different read that made me think about a lot of things in this world we currently live in. A good read for people looking for something different.
