Reviewed by FernTate Hampton is a stifled artist whose only company is his pet parrot, Jolene. The only thing he likes about his job is his handsome boss, Markus Athel. His relationship with Markus is strictly business until Markus appears at Tate’s door to discuss a project. Tate has no intention of revealing his crush on his boss until loudmouthed Jolene takes matters into her own beak and spills the beans.
Tate Hamilton hates his job but has a massive crush on his boss, Markus Athel. Coming home each evening to his African grey Parrot, Jolene, makes life almost bearable for Tate. When Markus stops by Tate’s apartment after work Jolene – an extremely verbose bird – spills the beans on Tate’s feelings for Markus.
This is a short story – a Torquere shot – and so there isn’t a lot of room for plot and character development. Despite this I enjoyed the steamy encounter between Tate and Markus. There is a believable connection between them and already a level of knowledge as they have worked together, so there’s none of the usual “getting to know each other” period that can sometimes clog down the action.
While there is some fumbling between them initially “this isn’t going to affect our working relationship” style stuff – the two men come together well and they both seem genuinely attracted to each other and eager for the encounter. I would have liked to have seen a little more depth to the scene, but the sex was hot and well written. While the story ends on a good note there weren’t a lot of hints as to where the situation would lead to – either a short term affair, a lasting relationship etc. A little more closure would have been nice.
This brief interlude is merely to whet the appetite and introduce the reader to the author’s work, and I enjoyed it. The addition of Jolene the Parrot was particularly inventive and added a different flavor to a well-known style of fantasy. Overall, although short, I enjoyed this story.
