This is a well-written novella with enough world-building to keep me happy. The characters are well-developed. With both steam and wit, I have no hesitation in recommending this book.

I found this steamy and sensual full length novel was surprising and engrossing. I thoroughly enjoyed the authors’ tone and writing style and found it both modern and easy to read, quickly finding myself deeply curious about how Greta and Jacob could resolve their history and build a solid base to begin their relationship again. Each had incorrect, pre-conceived notions about the other and it was amusing to watch them both have to adjust their snap judgments of the other and pretty much start from the beginning again.

The romance moved quite slowly and I both enjoyed this and found it difficult. I love a story where I can really get to know the characters first, understand their motivations and reasons, plus it’s always lovely to see them interact together without all the drama and extra complexities that romance always brings. But since Greta and Jacob had already been intimate in the past it felt a little stilted to me how they tried to wind their relationship backwards and be platonic together, just colleagues and pretend their memories and intimacy didn’t exist. It felt weird and a little unrealistic to me, so in that sense the slowness of the pace of their romance just never gelled or worked properly for me.

I found the intimate scenes between Greta and Jacob to be steamy and well-written, they were descriptive and passionate, but not over the top or too provocative. I thought the author did a good job showing the complexities of Greta and Jacob’s relationship. Each of them had sensible reasons behind their actions but – particularly in the beginning – neither were very good at expressing or conveying themselves to the other. I was a little disappointed that they both tended to make assumptions and react without clearly understanding where the other was coming from – that felt a bit silly to me, personally. But I was pleased particularly once they both began to see the other wasn’t as bad as they had originally assumed they both tried hard to communicate better and understand what was really happening.

For the most part I thoroughly enjoyed this steamy and fun romance, finding the winding and complicated road Greta and Jacob traveled together to be interesting and a great read. There were a few clichés – Greta’s ex and the smarmy co-worker who wanted to get in her pants both felt a little like plot-devices to ramp up the competitiveness and tension – but I have to admit they worked a treat to make the story feel more complicated. I enjoyed watching both Greta and Jacob have to work to mend and then build their relationship and blips on the path are a part of what life’s all about.

With modern and interesting characters, a good cast of strong secondary characters and plenty of twists and turns I found this to be a fun and interesting read.

This series is the first time I’ve ever read any romance novel written in the roaring twenties and I love it. Talk about refreshing!

The hero, Walter and the heroine, Shirley left me feeling in love, full of hope and inspired to follow my dreams. I loved the interaction between the two. From the moment they met I was smitten with them as a couple. They were heartwarming, comical and sexy.

In fact, all the characters are relatable and easy to bond with. This is what makes the Brides of the Roaring Twenties series so wonderful. It gave me a sense of friendship with in the community. In a world with corruption there are still a few good people.

From beginning to end I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. This was an ooh la la book for me. That translates to I would read this book a second time. I definite recommendation. This is a tangent but I’ve never been to a book signing but if I ever did it would be to a Lauri Robinson book signing. This was my eight book by her and it might be my favorite one so far. It’s definitely going on my keepers shelf.

This book tested my patience almost as much as Ian tested Gia’s. Not in a bad way! I simply had to remind myself the context of the story. Gia had found “the one” and lost him. How could any guy measure up to someone who felt like her literal other half? And be so exactly the opposite in every way. Don’t get me wrong, Ian is something. But he’s so much more than the face he wears in public. The shark in the courtroom. The consummate ladies man who doesn’t do more than one date with any one lucky lady.

I kept going back to something Gia decides that she wants for herself. She wants love that is totally organic. It took me a minute to wrap my mind around what that would look like but as I read the story, I began to see it even before Gia recognized it. The pacing of the story is actually just perfect for what both Gia and Ian need to get to the point where they are doing the relationship thing and it just kind of snuck up on them. It’s was beautiful!

The story is about more than just the developing bond between Gia and Ian, there’s a really interesting side story they’re dealing with. How would they get close enough to a client to actually help them? How would they find the information they needed with almost nothing to go on? It was intriguing. I had to know how it would end and hoped for the best.

An excellent conclusion to this min-series. I loved Ian and Gia’s story! He’s so self assured but she’s not going to settle for scratching an itch. I admired that about her character. I would suggest reading the prequel short story to really appreciate the chemistry between Gia and Ian. Not completely necessary but it adds to their overall story. Both are well worth the read.

A book written by Lauri Robinson is pretty much a guarantee for me that I am going to have an enjoyable read. I’m pleased to share that Baby on His Hollywood Doorstep wasn’t a disappointment. In fact, I’m excited that it is book one in the series Brides of the Roaring Twenties. I don’t know why I count but this happens to be my seventh Lauri Robinson book.

Baby on His Hollywood Doorstep was an excellent introduction to a new series. I considered the plot and setting to be rather unique and it therefore piqued my interest to want to read the next one.

Another reason I enjoyed this is because of the cast of characters. I developed a kinship with each one. Helen, the heroine, was born into a life that she had no choice in the matter. As life typically goes, there are often turns of events that we have no control over. We all have the choice to let it define us or not. Helen struggled with the cards life dealt her. It was heartwarming to read how she chose to rise above it. It happens, of course, with the help of others, mainly the hero, Jack, and as expected Jack had his life struggles too, but together they became a united force.

I truly loved this book and have no qualms recommending it. However, I have one bone to pick. Without giving any spoilers, I felt that there is a scene omitted. If so, it’s one I would have preferred to have been in on because Helen has a rather significant meeting/conversation with a significant person and I was not privy to it and I felt I should have been. I learned of it and heard what was said after the fact because she told Jack. Prior to this meeting there was a previous confrontation with this particular person where things were said that were pivotal to the plot. There was an agreement and, well … I can’t say anymore other than I would have liked to have heard her and this particular person have this second conversation. Perhaps it was done on purpose so that I would feel the same anger as Jack did when he learned what Helen had done behind his back. He forgave her faster than I did. Perhaps if I was in on the conversation then I would have been more forgiving. I kind of understand her reasoning but I didn’t like feeling left out. That’s the only major hiccup I experienced while reading this story.

I was entranced from beginning to end and was genuinely entertained. I’m thrilled that I already have the next book sitting next to me waiting to be read. I encourage others to join me in experiencing this new reading adventure, starting with Baby on His Hollywood Doorstep. The future for this series looks promising.

I found this to be an interesting and well-plotted mystery story. I was a little disappointed at first that the timeline seemed to jump around a fair bit from the past to the present; it made following the story a little more difficult than I usually enjoy, but I was curious enough about the Fraternity and what lay behind the murders to keep pushing on. I’m glad that I persisted, as once the history had been explained seeing the two plotlines weave carefully and craftily together was really interesting.

I feel readers will really be able to relate to both Shawn and Nina. Shawn is trying to get his feet under him, as a freshman to the University. He’s not keen to get involved with the fraternity as his brother hadn’t been keen on the rumors of bullying and hazing that dogged the club. I also really enjoyed Nina’s character. As a reporter collecting data and investigate the two murders for the book she wanted to write she was both a strong character but also determined and I felt she added a good balance to Shawn’s unknowing and younger style of presence.

There are a number of layered and complicated characters in this mystery and I enjoyed watching them all interact with each other. I feel this story is definitely plot and character-centric and the setting of the University gave the whole story a bit of a “small town” style of feel to me. Everyone knew each other and all their lives crossed over in various ways and means. I felt the tension and conflict was handled very well by the author, with subtle pressure and innuendo to pressure and control some of the characters giving the whole story an ominous and faint air of trouble bubbling and lurking under the surface. I could easily see how the currents of power and corruption reached out to tangle pretty much everyone’s lives and it was an engrossing read. Once the plot and various characters started really coming into their own I ended up finishing the second half of the story in one sitting – and I can’t recall the last time I stayed up late because I simply couldn’t put a book down.

I found this to be a really strongly written and well plotted story. The mystery isn’t exactly a “who done it” but with layered and complicated characters, plenty of back-scratching and trading of favours coupled with subtle corruption there is suspense and tension a-plenty throughout this tightly woven short story. A great read and an author I plan to keep an eye out for. Recommended.

This was such a poetic and thoughtful picture book. Some of the imagery in it made me laugh because of how creative it was. Other scenes made me pause and think of the ways I’ve been guilty of carrying negative experiences around with me longer than I should have. I truly enjoyed seeing how everything unfolded. There was a lot of food for thought included in this storyline, and it showed.

As beautiful as the writing was, I do think it would have benefitted from a clearer explanation of how the things Ollie carried around in his backpack were related to what other children who read about his adventures might worry about. I understood the metaphor well, but I did wonder if the age group it was written for would have the same reaction to it. One additional page of explanation would have been more than enough to drive the narrator’s point home in my opinion.

The ending was well-written. I liked seeing how Ollie reacted to all of the disappointing and hard things that happened to him on this day. Honestly, I would have been just as frustrated as he was if I were in his shoes, so it was interesting to see what he learned from these experiences and how he decided to respond to them.

I’d recommend Ollie’s Backpack to any young, or not so young, reader who carries worries around with them.

I grabbed this book because I really love the author. I’ve read many books by her before and I was excited to give this one a try. The storyline was intriguing: a 25 year-old mystery of “the lost boy” from Winchester, TN.

There is a previous mystery mentioned at the start of this book, so I’m guessing it’s part of a series (likely written by different authors, as Harlequin tends to do). That said, I never felt as if I was missing anything. Really, the two main characters, Halle and Liam, are who we have featured about 95% of the time, so it doesn’t have an ensemble feel to it. I certainly wasn’t lost at all and it doesn’t have a lead in to another mystery, so it’s solidly a standalone.

I like Halle a lot. She was besties with the boy who disappeared, and some of the story is told in brief flashbacks where you can tell how close they were, even as very young children. She never could completely move on with her life because of his disappearance. It affected things, including her failed marriage.

Liam took some time to grow on me. I understand his confusion and denial, but sometimes he came across as throwing a temper tantrum instead of handling things like an adult who’s also a very successful businessman. Some of the story was very obvious and he wouldn’t accept anything, even things that clearly were factual and true. I get that it meant his entire life was a lie, but he was occasionally cruel in his behavior, figuratively slapping Halle with his words.

I also didn’t feel chemistry between them as adults. The funny thing was, in the flashbacks they were so close and easy with each other…I could tell if they’d been allowed to grow up they would have always been close. It was during those scenes I could absolutely believe they’d fall in love and be together forever. But as adults, Liam spent so much time being angry around Halle, I struggled with their relationship, and the HEA ending didn’t feel believeable.

The mystery was decent, though, and although I figured out much of it, the actual complete truth was something I didn’t see. Wanting to see how it all played out kept me turning pages. And, like all of the author’s books, the writing was vivid and evocative, allowing images to play out in my mind as I read the words.

So, while this may not have been Ms. Webb’s strongest book (in my opinion), it’s certainly entertaining and I’m glad I read it. And, I’m definitely excited to try whatever she has coming out next.

I’ve read some dark mafia books. There’s always the element of darkness and perceived power over the weak. Sam Crescent doesn’t deviate from that formula but still put out a unique and intriguing story. I read a excerpt from the book before deciding to request it for review. I couldn’t imagine how the story could begin with so much anger and deception and end with a true and realistic HEA for Marcus and Laura. I knew I had to read it.

The author gives the reader chronological glimpses into the past. Brief episodes where Marcus and Laura cross paths and the outcome. It was very revealing as the present day story was told. Who Marcus was and how he became the man who forced Laura down the aisle, who constantly reminded her that she was his property, who swore that he would do his duty to the family. But it also showed me that Marcus was and would be protective of Laura, even love her in his own way.

The author gave me hope for Marcus and Laura in little ways that I truly appreciated. This was a quick read and one that I didn’t put down until finished. Readers who look for dark redemption will appreciate this one.
