The Peacekeeper. When his shy neighbor knocked on his apartment door, Phate’s mission to stay off the humans’ radar until the rescue team arrived changed in a blink of an eye. He not only wants to tell this delectable human about alien existence, but he also wants to take her back to Thelli with him.

Getting to know her was proving difficult when his new mission involves joining a dating app in an effort to see if humans are compatible enough to join the Intergalactic Dating Agency.

The Workaholic. Tasha worked hard building her small business on Main Street and didn’t have time for distractions. With a fire-cracker best friend and three new mysterious neighbors, Tasha was finding herself thinking of something other than her boutique for a change. But fate? Fate has a way of intervening, and she finds out the hard way that she can’t run or hide from her feelings, especially when distraction as fine as Phate lives right next door.

“Tell me exactly why you did that?” With his arms crossed, Solgre braced himself against the bathroom door, watching Kien as he tried to smooth the curls in his hair back.

Even from his seat on the ridiculously small armchair, Phate could tell that it wasn’t working. The abundance of water in the atmosphere was doing something strange to the texture of their hair. What use to be short and smooth, was now too long and too wavy.

“Why did I do what, exactly?” Kien asked. “Invite human women to our apartment to cure the boredom that’s been plaguing us since crash landing on this awful, backward planet?”

Phate sighed and leaned back in his chair. “He has a point, Solgre. We’ve been stuck on this planet for four of their Earth months and stuck inside this apartment since we acquired it, only leaving for essentials. Since we couldn’t send the distress beacon via a jump, we don’t know how long it will take for it to reach Thelli.

“We might as well make the best of this situation and meet the locals. At least, we’ll be able to tell the others how first contact went.”

As a young man, Dion Athamas was spiritually summoned to rapture then tenured god status. He had been endowed with all the benedictions to achieve sacredness: a devout flock, the power to heal and a covet for control. He also held a deep desire and ability to influence justice and universal liberty. The setting: the fictional town of Forgedmont, Mississippi, in the 1950s. Against great opposition he strived to become a new-age god; the earth was his oracle. He found faith-based conviction to be lacking in reason and truth. He chose to maintain an instinctive path to holiness. Regrettably for him and his followers, there were a great many roadblocks. He was forced to face off against the church, community, prejudice, family and scheming dreams influenced by fallacious spirits, all set forth to hamper his ascension to divinity.

My name is Dion Athamas, and I’m from the little the town of Forgedmont, Mississippi, U.S.A. Population 2,874. Should you be interested, I have a story to share with you. It’s my story, though tragic, I am quite willing to share it. I think it best you understand that this tale all began with a telling dream.

One night as I slept, I awoke to hear my name being softly spoken by a masculine voice I didn’t recognize. I sat up in bed and scanned the dark void, trying to establish the source of the voice. Without question, I felt an unnatural presence looming somewhere within the walls of my bedroom. I gradually began to recognize that the manifestation was speaking to me as if I were an acquaintance. His manner was quite affable as he appealed to me to stay calm and listen attentively to his message. He requested that I focus my vision straight ahead into the darkness and then close my eyes. When he gave the signal, I needed to slowly reopen my eyes to witness him visually. The signal was perceptually vague, but I received it. When I opened my eyes, I knew someone was sharing my room with me, but I had no idea who. I couldn’t identify the barely-perceptible image of a human form floating buoyantly at the foot of my bed. Then suddenly he was gone as quickly and enigmatically as he’d arrived.

About the Author:I have been writing poems and short stories for most of my life. It was not until I retired from my government position working with Special Needs individuals that I was able to focus on writing full time. The treatment of Special Needs people fostered in me a search for the explanation for the absence of morality in mankind. I have degrees in psychology and sociology from the University of Calgary, Alberta.

After a hundred years of watching humans make bad decisions, anyone would be sick of their job as peacekeeper.

Reihan, a seaver created to deal with humans who lose control over their manifestation abilities, is no exception.

Worse still, virtually all humans in the Travelling City can manifest.

That is, shape reality according to their more or less well-formed and often poorly thought-out designs.

That alone would be enough to keep her busy, but then there are people like Phillippe.

Phillippe, who drenched himself in the city’s collective subconscious to strengthen his inborn powers.

Even though he shouldn’t be, he seems fine, crowned as the new star escort in the Brothel of Transformative Curiosities.

But Reihan has seen this story play out before. And Phillippe is far too charming, far too kind, and far too inconsolable for her to simply look away.

The Travelling City is a dark fantasy mystery packed with romance and even more existential dread; set in a whimsical, bizarre and ever-changing world.

Enjoy an Excerpt

“Why would you say that to me?”

Phillippe’s voice was still shrill, but it assumed a layer of calm that Reihan found unusual. His eyes fixated on her, almost as if he was intrigued by the callousness lurking behind her words.

“Because I didn’t cause this, Phillippe. Because I was created to solve a problem that you humans could so easily avoid if not for your petulant greed and insistence on breaking every rule, no matter how well-meaning.”

“We had no choice”, Phillippe replied, still with that eerily resigned tone of his.

“I don’t believe that. All you people can manifest at least to a degree. You’ll never truly go hungry, and you’ll never truly go cold. Hells, if you get sick, you can make yourselves healthy, and when you get old, you can make yourselves young, at least for a little while. Everything else is a choice.”

“You don’t know – you wouldn’t understand.”

About the Author:Adrienne Miller writes in the genre of Dark Fantasy; combining beautiful aesthetics with existential dread. Her stories feature complex romances, found family dynamics, and storylines centred on world mysteries.

She has grown up with both classic and new Fantasy, from Michael Moorcok’s Eternal Hero series, Michael’s Scott’s “Thraxas” magical detective romps, to quiet and heart-felt Science-Fantasy by Becky Chambers.

The Travelling City is inspired by her love for the imaginative worlds of old-school role-playing games like Planescape Torment and the intricate character work of urban fantasy authors like Holly Black.

Kieran has spent his life living in the shadow of his late older brother. Brody had been the heir his father had loved and wanted, while Kieran was born to a woman his father despised for her betrayal. Kieran has only ever felt the bond of family with his best friend, Ella.

Ella knew one day Kieran would be called on to do his duty to his clan and marry for an alliance. But she never expected his engagement would suddenly force her to see him in such a different way. They’d known each other all their lives, but aside from one exploratory kiss, she had never been attracted to him as a woman is to a man. Until now.

As the time comes for Kieran to marry, he realizes he has feelings he shouldn’t have for the lass who’s been by his side all his life.

When the marriage contract is breached, Kieran hopes it means freedom for them to be together, but instead, it leads to war and a secret that will change their lives forever.

If given a choice between sitting in the hall hearing auld Innes accuse his neighbor of switching out his cow with one that gave less milk or jumping from the seawall to drown in the ocean, Kieran Sinclair might have chosen the latter. But Kieran had not been given many choices in his twenty years.

The son of a laird was first and foremost the heir. Upon his birth, he was destined to one day take over the clan, and as such, he spent every day until that happened in constant preparation for the event.

Even if it was never supposed to be his birthright.

In truth, Kieran was to be the second son. Heir to the heir only. Had things transpired as they should have, Kieran would be free to do what he wanted—or to do nothing at all.

Without the mantle of responsibility weighing heavy on his shoulders, he could have lived a life of his choosing, marrying his heart’s desire. Not that he was interested in marrying and had no heartfelt desires of yet.

Still, he knew one day he would marry a woman that was chosen for him. He would enter into a marriage for the sole purpose of an alliance or in a trade with some other clan.

If only his older brother had lived, it would have been Brody whose destiny was written without his control.

Days later Steele and Ruby arrange to meet James at the Five Points Cocktail Bar on San Pedro Square and hurried over.

Ruby loved the old glamorous gangster vibe the bar gave off. She was glad Steele picked a table located near the window facing San Pedro Square.

Steele and Ruby sat together on one side across from James.

The Bartender walked over. “Any drink orders?”

“I’ll take a White Devil,” James chuckled.

“In that case, I’ll have a Vatican City,” Steele said.

“Give me a Ready Aim Fire,” Ruby said. “In case I need to put a bullet in the White Devil.”

“That’s my girl,” Steele laughed.

“So, what is our topic of conversation?” James asked. “Or should I guess?”

Thanasis doesn’t look amused. “You know kids live on this street. Stringing the lights to look like Santa is peeing off the side of the house isn’t appropriate. And having my elves holding a body bag with the rest of my Christmas decorations in it is borderline disturbing.” I can’t help it. I snort with laughter. Thanasis’ eyes soften and I notice a slight twitch at the corner of his mouth. “I wanted us to become friends. To make peace.” Doubtful. But I’ll play along. “Fine. Let’s be friends.” “Too late. You don’t mess with a man’s yard.” I scoff,  Thanasis continues. “I want you to remember you started this.” Started what? “Nothing has started. It’s finished. Consider that as me getting even for last night.” “What happened last night?” “You were being obscene.” I hate the way my eyes drift to his lips. His perfect teeth are on display with his sexy knowing smile. His tongue snakes out only a bit to wet his lips, but it’s enough to have me squeezing my thighs together. “And you’re being childish by vandalizing my property.” “Is it vandalizing if it’s an improvement? When you think about it, I did you a favor. Consider it my gift to you for Sweetest Day.” “You definitely spiced up the neighborhood. I’ll see you for our playdate.” I loathe the fact that he looks so sexy when he winks. I wonder if I can teach the dogs to pee on him.

What My Characters Have Taught Me by Janae – Guest Blog and Giveaway

What My Characters Have Taught Me

The characters I create feel like real people to me. Over the years of crafting stories and developing personas, my fictional friends have taught me invaluable lessons that I’ve been able to apply to my life. The most important things I’ve learned from my characters are to have courage in the face of adversity, to stay true to yourself, and to keep an open mind. In this blog post, I’ll elaborate on these key takeaways and how various characters have shaped my perspective. The lessons we learn from fiction can be just as profound as those we gain from real relationships if we keep an open heart. Though my characters only live on the page, their effects reverberate far beyond.

I have been working on The Witches Prophecy for a decade so I know them intimately to where I can pinpoint what they’d say and how they’d react to certain topics and experiences. Perrish is a character. It houses many secrets and has a rich vibrant history just as an aged human would have. Yes, there are cold, austere buildings and even colder streets but the things that have occurred there left imprints on it.

Speaking of characters, there is a bevy of them in The Witches Prophecy. Of course, there is Lydia Ferell, the protagonist. Xaivier Christopher Stalphe the best friend and love interest of the protagonist. The spunky, fun-loving free spirit Digits or Sasha and the sweet geek that you can bring home to mom, Zander Tsui. My fictional friends have taught me important lessons that I’ve been able to apply to my life. The most valuable insights I’ve gained from my characters are to appreciate the journeys of others, to embrace my creativity without fear, and to handle adversity with grace. They maneuver through the pages in the driver’s seat, kicking butt and taking names.

Now, let us talk about Lydia or Trouble, as I prefer to call her, the spirited protagonist of my dark fantasy romance series. Trouble’s young life was rife with tragedy and sadness, but what is being blocked is all the fun she had which will be discovered in later books. She was born a witch. How is that? Well, the way it is explained in the book is that you come back in the form that is the strongest and the prevailing form for Trouble was an all-powerful witch. She must reckon her duality; light and dark. Trouble and Lydia. She considers one weak and one strong. Through Trouble’s experiences as the “chosen one”, I learned to empathize with those who feel marginalized for their talents, race, and gender. Trouble also taught me to unleash my creativity without self-doubt, holding me back.

Another impactful character of mine is Xaivier. He started out completely different from the iteration he is now. At first, he was a womanizer. Ew. Yeah. I changed him into my ideal mate, with the looks of Superman (I have a thing for superheroes real and imagined) with a good sweet heart. Xaivier spent years trapped in northern Perrish. Perrish is a modern place where racism is rife even in present day. Xaivier or X, as Trouble calls him, is a superhero without a cape. He learned from his youth as the cruelty of adults that should have known better taught their offspring. But X had his father, Xaivier Stalphe the first and his maid Loula. Loula was black, and she taught him that love has no color and no man was above any other. His father taught his to be a man and how to judge a man by character before jumping to incorrect assumptions.

Of course, when X meets Trouble, he immediately wants to save her. From what? Everything. Including herself. Xaivier inspired me to handle adversity with resilience, drawing on inner strength I didn’t know I had.

As an author, I’m grateful for the diverse perspectives my characters have revealed to me. Through giving each of them a story, I’ve grown. Their hard-won lessons now shape my worldview and approach to overcoming challenges. I learned to follow your own path and to be brave. The connections I’ve forged with my own characters reinforce that stories have profound power to change us. Which of your own characters has resonated most deeply for you as their creator? Please share in the comments!

When we get together

My heart can’t rest, fluttering when I see your memes,
My blood surges, spatters inside, and bounces; it steams.
I don’t know what these mean in my life, my friend,
It’s like a quest but don’t have to guess.
I think that only you can tame this heart of mine,
Stop my blood from rushing wildly, and make me fine.
From where you are, give me a sign
That it’s alright and that God will send you soon to be mine.
Right now, I am taking a step closer to be with you,
So, I am in constant elation as I think of you.
It’s not Coldplay, you are my universe,
Trust me, we will surmount these obstacles and be together someday.
