Eleven years ago Shane Ventura made the biggest mistake of his life when he caved in to pressure from his record label to kick his best friend Jesse Seider out of their band, Luck. Though he had a gorgeous voice, Jesse wasn’t beautiful and didn’t fit the label’s ideal look. But Shane’s never wanted anyone else more, and all the sex and alcohol in the world can’t fill the void Jesse left behind.

As his thirty-second birthday approaches, Shane’s more miserable than ever. Even the prospect of teaming up with Britain’s hottest band, Moonlight, for an epic world tour can’t get him out of his depressive funk. Until he meets lead singer, Kayden Berlin, and falls into instant lust.

Though Kayden acts like he’s not interested, Shane knows he feels the spark between them. The harder Shane pushes, the more Kayden pulls away. Then one explosive night things finally come to a head and Shane is left nursing a broken heart. That seems to be Shane’s lot — lucky at everything but love. But there’s a lesson in store for Shane: when it comes to love, you can’t always leave things to chance.

Sometimes you get a second chance at your worst mistake, even if you don’t realize it. Shane Ventura is a successful rock star on the verge of burning out. Bored, apathetic and too immersed in the rock star lifestyle, Shane’s never forgotten the act that launched his success. Throwing away his best friend and first love was something Shane couldn’t let go. But when he meets another successful rocker, Kayden, Shane is shocked at the depth of his feelings. Yet it’s not easy, as Kayden wants nothing to do with Shane.

In fact I recommend you ignore the prequels as they set up a very different vibe and relationship than the one presented in the novel. That’s part of the reason this story didn’t fully work for me but for any readers new to this tale, it’s a pretty familiar one of angst driven rockers bored with their success but shocked when someone doesn’t give in to their sexual advances. Here Shane is the typical apathetic rocker not looking to change his life so much as bored silly and can’t be bothered to continue drinking, drugging, and having random sex. It’s not a character evolution so much as laziness.

That laziness works for him eventually as Shane and Kayden hook up with a bit of a twist thrown in regarding their past. This isn’t a surprise twist and the story telegraphs it well in advance with the numerous flashbacks mixed with current day events. This technique is used decently but spells the story out very clearly without any attempt at subtly. You always know exactly where the story is going and why, so some readers may be bored. Those who don’t mind such predictability may like the somewhat comfortingly familiar rocker theme. It has a bit of angst, a bit of drama, lots of sex and tension to satisfy those that like such things.

Though I’m a fan of all those elements, this particular story never came together for me. The characters were predictable and two dimensional, and I never really connected with either one. The writing is okay but I had to work to keep my attention on the story and not skim or skip ahead. Reader tastes vary though and I can easily see this story being more satisfying for someone else. Check it out and decide for yourself.
