The bad news: Arita’s aunt has been murdered. The surprising news: Arita has inherited her late aunt’s ranch in Wyoming. More bad news: Now she has to leave Boston and deal with the ranch she’s just inherited. It’s on the verge of foreclosure, she’s being sued by someone who was injured at the ranch even before she got it, and there’s a certain man who works for the ranch that she doesn’t know whether to throttle or kiss him.
It’s funny to imagine Arita’s character on the ranch. She’s a total city girl, and the description of her clothing shows it. At one point in the story, Clay points out that her “britches have sparkles on them” Arita tries to keep her relationship with Clay strictly business, but she lets her guard down a few times to share a sizzling kiss with him, and then all of a sudden returns back to her business relationship only with him. He seems to flaunt other women at her, as if he’s trying to make her jealous. The behavior is obnoxious and immature and, like Arita at many points in the book, I wanted to shake Clay and tell him to get a better attitude.
My feelings about this novel waver. The premise is great, there’s a good amount of mystery and suspense, and most of the characters are enjoyable. Clay and Arita have their moments, but most times I was frustrated with they way they act towards one another and just in general.
Inherited Danger is a romantic suspense with a western/cowboy theme, there’s a few parts in the story where I read glimpses of the villain’s point of view. There are plenty of suspicious characters and I was left guessing until the very end. I felt the plot lines were tied up well at the end and the mystery was definitely the strongest point of this book.
