The voice of the story belongs to our hero, Adam. He’s brash, unapologetic, and shoots straight from the hip. If you want a sympathetic hero – hell, even a likable one – you’re probably not going to care for Adam much. There are times when you’ll adore him, and then others when you’ll hate him, especially when it comes to his treatment of his on and off again lover, Peter.
To be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever wished the love interest in a story would tell the main protagonist to take a hike, but I did so on more than once during the reading of Immortality Is The Suck. Adam, by his own admission, is “not a nice man”, but his casual disregard when it came to sexual safety and Peter’s feelings (while he was sleeping with other, sometimes random, men) was rather icky. He’s promiscuous, and though he doesn’t exactly lie about it, he doesn’t come clean unless asked directly. You know the lone neighborhood Tomcat who impregnates all of the cats in the area? Adam would fall into that category. To be fair, the material isn’t written to place Adam on a pedestal, or to make him into someone he isn’t. But as a reviewer, I felt it was only fair to warn that if you’re in the mood for romance, you’re not going to find much of it here.
As for the story itself, you won’t hear a complaint from this girl! The entire whodunit will keep you guessing, and the writing is spin-on-a-dime sharp. While Adam might have grated on the nerves in the romantic aspects of the story, he is incredibly entertaining and hilarious when he’s in his smart-ass element. The tongue-in-cheek inner dialogue had me snorting, while the situations he finds himself in keep getting better and better.
Romantics might not dig this story, but urban fantasy fans (especially those with a love of a first person narrative), and those with an adoration for snark will gobble this one up and ask for seconds. Definitely worth the read, be sure to check out Immortality Is The Suck.
