Reviewed by FoxgloveSeth Pace, guitarist of the rock band Speed, is a born dreamer, and nothing stands in his way of making those dreams a reality. Except when it comes to band manager Luke Struthers. He’s everything Seth wants in a partner, but even after five years of perfectly explosive sex, Luke refuses to commit.
After a childhood ravaged by abuse, Luke knows he’s a potential danger to anyone foolish enough to love him. Seth is safer without him, but Luke has no idea how to cut him loose painlessly. Until he spots Seth’s kind of woman—pretty, smart, friendly. The plan: seduce her into a sexy threesome, then leave the two alone to fall in love. Problem solved.
A night of excitement with the two hottest men on the planet? Yeah, baby! Yet Kaz’s inborn ability to read auras tells her something isn’t right. It’s obvious Seth and Luke are madly in love, but subtle clues in Luke’s aura signal he’s up to something. She’s not sure what, but if she doesn’t do something quick, the two men she’s quickly come to adore will wind up without the happily ever after they both deserve.
Not even the best laid plans can withstand the force of love. Abused as a child, Luke Struthers is determined not to let his love for Seth Pace keep him from doing the right thing. In Luke’s mind, the right thing is to walk out of Seth’s life before he hurts him, not thinking how that will affect Seth. Singer and songwriter Seth Pace a.k.a. Jordan Speed is trying to convince Luke they are meant to be together, but sometimes it feels like he’s fighting a losing battle. When Luke brings Kaz backstage after a concert, she’s stunned but excited to meet Jordan Speed in the flesh. Before long, she’s seeing a lot of both men, but Kaz has a secret: she can see auras, and what she sees around Jordan and Luke is love. She also sees that Luke is struggling with something, and makes it her mission to bring these two men together. Can Kaz and Seth convince Luke he deserves the love Seth offers so freely? Can Luke open up about the past and finally let it go? Will these two find their way to a life together, or will Luke’s fears win out?
Colors of Love is the second book in Jess Dee’s Speed series, and it’s a well written and engaging look at the lives behind the scenes of a music star. I enjoyed Ms. Dee’s take on the world of music, and the passions that run beneath the surface of these people. The locations used for this were well thought out, and chosen with care by Ms. Dee to provide familiarity as well as providing a new venue for the band to conquer. The characters are well defined and attractive, and I was drawn to them quickly.
Luke Struthers is strong, handsome, and tortured by his past. Abused as a child by his father, he eventually fought back, but believes he’s a danger to those around him. His love for Seth/Jordan tears him apart, wanting him yet fearing he will destroy the very person he loves most. I found Luke to be the most compassionate man, deserving of so much more than he expected. Watching him become the man he was meant to be was a delight.
Karen ‘Kaz’ Flaherty is smart, sassy and ready for the change she sees coming. She has just made major changes in her personal life by quitting her boring job, and getting out of a dead end relationship. Her instant attraction to Luke, and then later to Seth as well, shows her a new side to herself, a side ready to experience more from life than she ever has. I like Kaz, with her adventurous spirit and her strange ability to see colors and auras around her. I appreciated that she goes into the situation knowing that this is just a temporary thing for her, and that she is looking for a way to help Luke find happiness and love with Seth, while she decides her own future. I like Kaz’s sense of adventure and romanticism, and her well grounded practicality in spite of her abilities.
Seth ‘Jordan Speed’ Pace is the guitar genius and lyricist behind the bands success, and he is determined, talented and smart. He knows what he wants, and refuses to be sidetracked from his pursuit of Luke. I liked seeing Seth and Kaz work together to help Luke see that his love will not ever hurt Seth, and I was caught up in the dynamics between the three main characters of this relationship.
Jess Dee has a way of bringing the reader into the story, and I experienced this from each perspective. The secondary characters, Kaz’s friends and the brothers, are as well defined as the main trio, and would be an asset to any story. I look forward to more from this world, and recommend this to those who like a hard won happy ever after for all concerned.
