The words funny and charming, sensual and compelling could describe this story. Amelia Grey has created characters with depth who interact in entertaining ways. A Gentleman Never Tells is a delightful Regency-era romance.
Gabrielle, a once obedient Duke’s daughter, sees something that drags her from her proper ways. She does a shocking thing in a park, starting the novel off with a surprise. The reckless thing she does changes the life of an innocent man, a Viscount.
Don’t feel bad for the Viscount though, great guy that he is, even though trouble follows him around since meeting Gabrielle. After his encounter with her, his heart is never the same.
Witty dialogue and humorous dog adventures give this book a slightly funny tone under the romantic one. Secondary characters add an interesting touch to the story. Marriage, infidelity, and sisterly relationships come into play, their themes adding meaning and perspective. Wonderful sensual moments are weaved throughout the story and are just perfect.
As likeable as Gabrielle is, at times, she is a bit hypocritical, like when she uses her antics (which are admittedly humorous) to dissuade the Viscount from wanting her and yet she always seems to be looking her best. She thinks he doesn’t want to marry her and is being forced to. However, he is constantly warm toward her and wants to kiss her. Are those the actions of a man who feels trapped?
Despite this, the book is delightful. The ending is charming and unforgettable. Amelia Grey can write a great tale. Regency fans should check this one out.
