What was supposed to be a celebration of life turns into a festival of fear…

Natalie Devonshire is nervous about attending the invitation only, annual Beltane feast. She’s heard it can be wild and naughty and though intrigued, she plans only to observe. That is, until she meets handsome William Zapata, who convinces her that trying something new can be as fun as it is daring.

William’s been coming to this festival for several years, for one reason only—to spend time with his sometime lover. When he meets Natalie outside the gates, his interest is immediate. He’s drawn to her, and as backward as this celebration makes their introductions, his intention is to keep seeing her long after the festival ends.

Not all is a bed of roses, however. Some attendees see the festival as a way to meet needs of a darker nature. Beltane not only has a history rich in fertility and life, but also has historical ties with the occult. This includes human sacrifice and all the necessary preparations are in order. When people begin to disappear and death explodes around the celebrants, panic ensues.

Trapped and confused, can Natalie and William find out who is behind the destruction of this celebration and stop the spiralling events before they become part of the sacrifice themselves? And when all is said and done, will the attraction between them be strong enough to last, or will they discover their interest was fleeting and best left burning with the fires?

Every once in a while it is fun to read a tale that takes you to a place you will never experience in real life. The Fires of Beltane is that type of story.

Natalie Devonshire, against her better judgment, has agreed to attend the festival of Beltane, but only because her dear friend has been named the May Queen. She’s heard whispers and rumors of what happens during this mysterious ritual, but she still has no idea what she will encounter once she passes the fiery gates. Just as she’s thinking of leaving, a deep, sexy voice convinces her to stay.

That voice belongs to William Zapata. This is not his first time at the festival; he’s attended several times in order to connect with his occasional lover. He takes an immediate liking to Natalie, and calms her enough to convince her to let go and have fun during the evening. They spend the evening enjoying each other, as well as several other people, before the night ends in utter disaster.

There are good and bad elements to this book. On the good side, there is a little bit of everything included, so no matter what type of erotica you like to read, you’ll find something that speaks to you in the course of the story. There are elements of male/female, female/female, male/male, menage, voyeurism and multiple partners. There are also elements of paranormal and fantasy, with scatters of some mystery and a bit of action. Chances are you will find something that you like in this short tale.

On the bad side, however, it didn’t seem as if there was enough time spent on the characters. The sex was hot, depending on which scene you liked, but the ultimate connection between William and Natalie wasn’t as developed as it could have been, even in the short number of pages. I also didn’t get much of a feel for why this ritual was different at this point in time, and what the purpose of it was. I can make some assumptions, but I’m not sure if another reader might assume other things. Perhaps this was by design, but I usually like to have all the questions answered by the end of the story.

We’re left with a feeling of happily ever after, though I’m not sure it’s believable after the events of the evening, but it does wrap things up cleanly. I’d possibly be interested in reading other titles from this author, depending on the genre, because other than only a couple editing mistakes, the writing was clean and easily understood.

If you’re looking for a quick fantasy filled with erotic sensuality of all kinds, mixed with a bit of mystery and intrigue, perhaps this is a title to check out!

When an alpha Delta Force leader and a prosecuting attorney meet at a bondage club, which one will be the top and which one the bottom?

Slade Donovan has been a Delta Force team leader for years and the missions are beginning to wear on him. He’s been a Dom for longer than that, but now he’s tired of the string of faceless women and wants to find the right sub and form a permanent relationship. Someone who understands his life and can deal with it.

Kari Malone excels in her role as a prosecuting attorney but the iron control she needs to do it gets tiring. And her search for the right man is fraught with disappointments. When a friend introduces her to the D/s scene, she finally finds an arena where she is able to both shed her mantle of control and indulge in her sexual fantasies. She meets Slade, also a guest, and their brief connection is instant and intense.

Five years pass before they meet again. By now, as Butterfly Kari has created an alternative life for herself at The Edge, a very private bondage club. Her search for the right man falters when she realises none of them can compete with the memory of the man she met in Chicago. When Slade turns up at The Edge it’s apparent from “Hello” that the heat between them has been simmering all this time and is about to explode. But can each of them provide what the other needs to make this work?

Want to see two strong, dominant characters collide in the bedroom? If so, this might just be a book for you.

Slade Donavan is the leader of a Delta Force team. But he’s so much more than just an alpha male on the battlefield, he also likes to dominate in the bedroom, a role he prides himself in. But what happens when he wants more than just a woman to play with, what happens when he needs someone to share his life with? Kari, an assistant district attorney, works hard and plays hard too. But since a meeting with a Dom, when she was a young, naïve sub, five years ago, she’s been searching for that very Dom but without success.

The author introduces us to Slade first in this book; he’s in Afghanistan doing his thing with his team. I got the feeling I was being introduced to them as I got a description of each and they planned their ‘downtime’ trip to Slade’s ranch . This included hopes of taking a visit to The Edge, Slade’s local BDSM club. This was all a nice way to build reader anticipation – you just know its going to get good and raunchy when a group of hot guys are intending ‘that’ sort of evening.

Coincidences sometimes don’t work well in novels, but this one, I am happy to say hit all the right buttons. The Dom Kari has been dreaming of is Slade, and they bump into each other at The Edge. Slade is thrilled that when he introduced Kari to BDSM she obviously enjoyed it enough to learn more, play more. Kari is overjoyed that the man no one else can live up to has her naked, manacled and crying for more strikes within minutes. This is one hot scene – grab yourself an electric fan.

But the book goes deeper than that because both Slade and Kari are looking for more than just fun in the bedroom. They sense a connection and a similar sense of life goals. Ms Holt portrays their romance beautifully with dates, sweet kisses and getting to know one another. All a stark contrast to the wild sessions of kink at The Edge. There is also a good dose of war-zone action if you like the grittiness of fighting soldiers.

Unconditional Surrender is well written, has compelling characters and is very sexy. It’s a good length to lose yourself in and I for one would be happy to see what stories the other members of this Delta Force team have to tell.

A woman who is all about rules and a man who lives to break them, their scorching passion threatens all they hold dear. Can they find a way to have it all?

Lieutenant Commander Giovanni ‘Casanova’ Cassano is a top test pilot for the military, and is the epitome of an ace. Cocky, arrogant, handsome, and true to his call sign. His best friend’s death brings a new pilot to his squadron—a woman. That’s not even the real reason it’s hard—she’s the one who left an indelible imprint on his soul after a twenty—four hour rendezvous. Now she seems to have ice in her veins, not the fiery passion he knows rages beneath the surface.

Jaydee ‘Dusti’ Amos is following orders, and this time they have landed her at a test facility. She’s there to ascertain what caused the deadly B—2 crash. The situation becomes harder once she discovers who is stationed there—the one man she never believed she’d see again after their impulsive and passionate encounter. He pulls her focus from the job at hand and tends to make her break the stringent rules she lives her life by.

They work together to unveil the truth and the feelings between them deepen. But there is a traitor in their midst. Will the fallout tear them apart, or will Gio find some way to convince Jaydee to give him a chance at forever?

Training Casanova, by one of my favorite romance writers Aliyah Burke, is one of those tales that will draw you in from the first paragraph, take you on a wild ride, and then set you down softly. This story had it all: strong male and female leads, intrigue, romance, hot sex and great supporting characters. From the moment this reader turned to the first page I was hooked and did not stop until the last page was turned. Training Casanova is the first book in Ms. Burkes’ In Aeternum Series.

Lieutenant Commander Giovanni ‘Casanova’ Cassano is one of the best test pilots for the military, he got his nickname of ‘Casanova’ by being one of those love ’em and leave ’em type of guys. Women just naturally gravitated to him and he took advantage of that fact.

The opening of the story was is so compelling. Giovanni is mourning the death of his best friend Michael ‘Sidewinder’ Walker who had died while engaging in a test mission. He decided after the funeral to go to a bar and drown his sorrows in a bottle of Jack when across the bar he was drawn to the laughter of one woman. Without thinking he walked over to her, looked in her eyes and without asking just said ‘dance with me’.

Jaydee takes one look at the gorgeous man, smiles and dances with him, she also ended up in a corner of the bar kissing him. The next night she finds him in the same bar and their relationship goes from “dance with me” to “go home with me” real quick. When she left the next morning Gio was left with just memories of the mystery woman because in their sexual fever they never exchanged names. So imagine his surprise when he finds out that the pilot replacing Michael was the woman from the bar, Naval Lieutenant Commander Jaydee ‘Dusti’ Amos.

Jaydee and Gio had such a connection that this reader knew that the obstacles they faced would somehow be overcome. The rules about non fraternization hindered them somewhat but did not stop the heat between them or the times that they did get together. The mystery surrounding Michael’s death also added another dimension because then the story wasn’t just about the sexual attraction between Jaydee and Gio. Add in the fact that Gio had his Casanova reputation to live down before Jaydee could completely trust him, especially since women he had slept with keep coming on to him.

The characters were very well developed I knew what their fears were and what demons rode them. This reader was able to sympathize with Jaydee because of the way the author described the challenges she had to face growing up. I loved that these characters were strong, in most stories the men are always strong or alpha and the women are less so. However, in this story Jaydee was strong and stood her ground no matter what. When Gio made noise about having to watch a female pilot, Jaydee just told him ‘don’t try to measure your dick to mine Commander, you’re sure to come up short’ which had me smiling.

Training Casanova was an excellent read which I would recommend it whole heartily to anyone who wants to sit back and lose themselves in a good novel.

Book four in the Kemet Uncovered Series

I am nature’s representative. I give my voice when the earth cannot. My work sent me on an intersecting course with a stubborn, arrogant, and hard-headed man named, Kenric Annson.

Although I don’t understand him I can’t help but be attracted to him. His smouldering looks and heated caresses have rattled me unlike any before him. The cosmos have an interesting sense of humour.

Me, who has lived longer than he could possibly imagine can be struck mute by something so simple as his touch. What’s a goddess to do when she wants the one man who has the means destroy her beloved earth? Kill him? Save him?

Saffron

Kenric Annson and his crew are digging in the mines of Somalia for natural gas when the powers-that-be sent a civilian to help them find the natural gas pockets. Kenric was annoyed because he did not want to babysit ‘a rock doc’. Kenric felt he had his hands full protecting his men from the bands of Muslim extremists who attacked them constantly and he didn’t need to add someone else to his list. However, when Saffron Eshe arrived at the site Kenric was instantly struck by her beauty and his only thought was that he would love to ‘see her in a bikini or nothing at all’.

The owner of the mine, Kade Grimmel, Frank’s brother, sent Doctor Saffron Eshe, a geologist, to help Kenric and the miners find the natural gas. She’s beautiful, arrogant, confident and immediately let Kenric know that this ‘rock doc’ could take care of herself. She’s also completely attracted to Kenric and would like nothing more than to wrap herself around him. Which is what she does the first time he took her into the mine, she gave into the urge and kissed him.

Kenric couldn’t understand the overwhelming need to protect Saffron, especially since she irritated him so much, but what he didn’t know was that Saffron wasn’t what she appeared to be. Saffron Eshe was the Egyptian goddess Qetesh, protector of the earth, and her main purpose for being there was to protect what she loved. Saffron realized that they were blasting near the fault line and she could feel the earth’s unhappiness. She also felt something else, she felt desire for a human and she didn’t quite know what to make of that.

Taige Crenshaw and Aliyah Burke are two of my favorite writers, when they weave a tale the reader becomes so engrossed in the characters and the story that you feel like you are right there with them. Saffron, the fourth book in the Kemet Uncovered Series, did not disappoint this reader. The main characters as well as the supporting characters were woven expertly into the fabric of the story. Each character had a purpose and this reader cared about each one, and couldn’t wait for the villain of the tale to be handled. Although this novella was only 71 pages, the characters were well developed and the story did not leave me feeling like it had been rushed. Saffron mixed ancient Egyptian lore with a modern day setting which allowed this reader to sit back and enjoy an absolutely beautiful story.

On the run from her abusive husband Catherine has learned not to trust anyone—especially no one in the BDSM lifestyle. But will she be able to resist a powerful dom like Jon?

Catherine has been on the run from her abusive husband and former dom for years. Unable to trust anyone, she has also left the BDSM lifestyle. Or so she thought, until a strange but powerful voice told her to get naked and kneel right there, in the middle of her office, after hours. Will she give in to her sweet urges and submit to a strange dom if only for one night? Can she trust her own instincts, which had let her into a disastrous marriage?

Jon has been a dom for years, but recently he has become bored with the lifestyle—until he sees Catherine kneeling in her office stark naked and in a beautifully submissive position. Jon knows he has to have her. Can he convince the gorgeous submissive to trust him? And will he be able to keep her safe from the demons in her past?

Note to all Doms: Be careful of where you practice your big bad “Dom” voice, you never know who is listening to you.

That’s how this story starts. A colleague of Catherine’s is in his office, practicing his voice commands for a girlfriend who needs a strong hand in the bedroom. Something about the voice triggers Catherine’s former inner sub and she can’t help but follow the commands. And what is a person to do when you accidentally master your boss? Well, you call your mentor of course!

And here comes Jon to save the day. Kind of. The moment Jon lays eyes on the beautiful sub kneeling naked in her office, he’s hooked. Instant attraction and respect blooms within Jon because of Catherine’s discipline as a submissive. Deciding he had to have her, she agrees to play out a scene with him. By the end, Jon realizes one brief moment is not enough with her and she has revived his outlook on the lifestyle.

Although she’s out of the lifestyle, there is something about this mysterious Dom that has Catherine all a flutter and she decides to give in to her own needs. Over the course of their first evening together you find out that Catherine is on the run from her former Dom who happens to be her abusive husband. But Jon shows her how a true, caring D/s relationship is supposed to be and she can’t help but thrive in the gentle hands of this new man.

This is a short, sweet and very sexy story. I know you’re thinking, how can it be sweet and sexy? Well it’s true! Mina Dorian wrote a lovely story about healing and love through the outlet of a BDSM lifestyle. Both characters are equally strong in their own way, Catherine because of her jerk of an ex, and Jon is very confident with himself. I do wish we had learned more about Jon and how he got to the point of being bored with the lifestyle. The story was very fast paced making this a quick read, but I felt there needed to be a little something extra. Maybe a little more insight into the couples building feelings and relationship.

But the sexiness smoldered the pages and the sweetness will melt your heart. So if you like BDSM, sexy Doms, sweet subs and the bad guy gets it in the end, then look no further!

Skye Adams thought she was meeting her father for an ordinary lunch. Instead she ends up running for her life on a deadly mission with only one man whom she can trust to keep her safe-Jack Berick.

Skye Adams is looking forward to a wonderful lunch with her father – Victor Adams – to celebrate her birthday after he returns from a work trip. Instead of a good meal of Thai food, however, Skye ends up on the run for her life. Black-clad strangers try to kill her, her father’s partner Garth and decimate the restaurant to smoking rubble. Scared out of her mind, Skye turns to the only person she feels she can trust, Jack Berick, a rugged, mysterious man whom her father once insisted she believe in were all hell ever to suddenly break loose.

Piecing together a complicated web of lies, half truths and deceit, Skye and Jack must work out not only whom to trust, but figure out what happened to Victor and how to get him back – preferably whole and sound. The further they dig, the more convoluted everything becomes and Skye finally understands the world is not full of black and white, good and evil, but a messy mixture of grey.

In amongst the fear, fire and insanity, more and more Skye realized the searing attraction burning between herself and Jack is the only solid, reliable thing she can depend on. Losing her heart had not been part of the plan, but all too soon the intensity smouldering between them has raged way out of control, and Skye can only see one man dependable enough to remain by her side into the future no matter what might happen. That man is Jack, as they both tempt fate and flirt with danger.

How would you react if you found out your father had a deep super surprising secret life? Skye Adams learned that very thing when she was twenty-two years old. Despite assuming her father was paranoid and overly dramatic, they retained a close relationship until the day he disappears. The next 24 hours are a whirlwind for young Skye.

Ms. Lapthorne writes a very good action story. There are spies, guns, explosions and chase scenes. I was never sure what would be lurking around the next corner. While the action was good, there wasn’t much suspense involved. Since this is the first book of a series, I’m assuming the next title may contain more of the mystery aspect.

What felt lacking a bit in this story was the romance. After her father, Victor, is abducted, Skye isn’t sure who to trust or where to turn until she remembers to call Jack Berwick, a private investigator Victor trusts. Skye and Jack make an instant connection, but it did feel a bit rushed. I didn’t get to know Jack very well, and never did learn what it was about him that made Victor trust him. In a very short amount of time, however, Jack and Skye were in the bedroom having passionate sex. While I didn’t disagree with the pairing, the author just didn’t give any reason as to why, short of the heat of the moment. Skye was emotionally upset after almost being killed, and the transition to them sleeping together after barely more than a conversation, and then only hours later professing their undying love and planning a future just felt rushed.

Following Jack and Skye through their journey was an exciting adventure, and I enjoyed the support Jack gave Skye as the story went on. I do wish I could have gotten to know Jack a little better, but Skye was a heroine who was easy to root for. Despite not being trained in the spy world, she held her own wonderfully as she fought to rescue her father. If you like a fast paced, quick read, this may pique your interest.

A topless dancer plus a cynical cop doesn’t equal a lifetime love…or does it?

There’s more to Jude Nelson than just a sequined thong. She has big dreams of becoming an artist. There’s one tiny wrinkle in her plan-she’ll never forget the bloody image of her friend’s battered body in the dumpster.

Who can a nude dancer turn to for help? Certainly not a hardened undercover cop…

Detective Drew Alwyn is on the case to find out who murdered his good friend and fellow officer. But the moment he sees Jude, he can’t look away. He has to decide which is more important-his dedication to his job or the girl who holds his bruised and battered heart.

Will these two opposites come together to solve the case or will their desire consume them?

It’s business as usual at the Silver Steel Gentlemen’s Club, a fact the Carrington Falls police department wants to change. After finding the bodies of the last undercover officer and his lover in a trash compactor behind the club, the department is stepping up its program to get the goods on Salazar “Tiny” Balthazar and finally put him out of business. As the new bouncer at the club, Drew “Ramon” Alwyn is determined to stop Tiny, and there are several others in place as well. When Drew spots Jude “Judy Blue Eyes” Nelson, it’s lust at first sight, but he can’t let his attraction to the beautiful and sexy stripper sidetrack his mission. However, things aren’t all they appear to be, and not all the cops here are the good guys. When Ramon discovers the secrets Jude hides, he falls even harder, but knows he can’t protect her and do his job as well. Can a stripper and a jaded undercover cop find common ground? Will Drew lose the woman he has come to love when he tells her the truth? Can these two manage to, finally, bring the bad guys down and still find a way to a happy ever after?

Wendi Zwaduk returns us to the dark, twisted noir setting from Over My Head, with many of the same characters and places we have visited before. There’s the same dark, gritty and dangerous feeling to this one, and I enjoyed the return, after the nasty shock of the beginning. That is just one of many secrets, twists and mysteries present in this, and the danger and action kept me reading, needing to know what was next. Every time I thought I knew what was next, Ms. Zwaduk sent me in another direction completely. I really like that in a story, not being able to predict every move. The characters, both new and old, are expertly detailed, and very believable.

Jude Nelson is beautiful, sensuous and very good at what she does. One of the dancers at the Silver Steel, she is not what she appears to be: in fact she is an art student, just working to finish her degree. Despite her job, there’s an innocence about Jude, a sweet and shy demeanor away from the club. She’s determined to get out of the business just as soon as she finishes her classes. I like Jude, with her strength of character and her determination. She is loyal, and has an inner strength to see things through.

Officer Drew Alwyn, or Ramon, is a strong and determined character. He is set on bringing down the drug ring and the head of it, to make sure his friend did not die in vain. When he sees Jude, he is drawn to her, knowing only that she is a dancer at the club, but quickly seeing past the front she has built to keep men at a distance. I liked Drew’s sense of duty, and his inner fight to find a way to get the ‘bad guys’ but also to get the girl. I liked watching as he slowly let little pieces of the real man shine through to Jude.

Like the first book, there’s a dark and dangerous thread running through this story. Once I started reading, I saw that everyone had a secret side, and some were very much darker that I originally thought. The secondary characters were as well defined as Jude and Drew, and some of the motivations behind their actions were what you would expect, but not from who I thought it would be. Jude and Drew have a hard road, but they do find their way to be together, and at least have a happy for now. There are more twists and secret, but you need to read this for yourself to learn the whole story.

The story along with its ups and downs had me eagerly awaiting Nia and Darius’ next encounter. Nia couldn’t control her hunger for him, and she couldn’t explain why, she just needed to be with him. Her reaction and the reason behind her reaction to his secret was unexpected.

This book had me from the opening paragraph and kept my interest until the last page. Like I said, I wanted just a few more pages, but this is a welcome continuation of the Wilde series, and I look forward to the next book in this series.

Sometimes a mate bond can be damned inconvenient…as well as crucial to survival when a murderer sets his sights on one of the pair.

As if life isn’t tough enough for a half Fae, half butterfly shifter, Tate is thrown for a loop when his mate turns out to be a reclusive Lynx shifter. Cain is focused on tracking his brother’s killer, and stumbling across his mate at the same time he finds the murderer wasn’t in his plans. Especially when the discovery means the killer gets away.

Sparks fly between the Lynx and the halfling even though neither wants to cave to a fated-mate bond. But when a serial murderer comes after Cain, Tate must call up powers he rarely uses to save them both.

Vampires and wolves, wolves and humans, lynx and butterflies…one of these is NOT a typical shifter mating but it is the basis for an exciting and thoroughly entertaining story by the talented Em Woods.

Cain Howell is a lynx shifter. The story opens with him tracking the man who viciously killed his brother. His anger and impulsiveness puts him in the sites of the killer until he suddenly catches a fresh scent that distracts him from his goal. His mate.

A trope often used in fated mate/shifter books is the ability of the mates to know each other by scent. The smell is typically pleasant, intoxicating even. This is true for Cain when he catches Tate’s scent but there’s more. Cain also describes the scent as “reassuring and soothing” but that doesn’t mean he’s going to roll over for a belly rub just because some cosmic force deemed them mates. How can a lynx mate with a butterfly anyway? He can when the butterfly in question is more than he seems. Also, it doesn’t hurt that these men aren’t too proud to accept some motherly advice. Those scenes are actually pretty funny.

Tate wasn’t out looking for his mate, either, when he spots Cain hiding in the tall grass, but they can only deny facts for so long. Tate accepts his fate a lot quicker than Cain and that’s a good thing. They need each other and the timing is perfect. He uses his influence on Cain to convince him to wait until the right moment to confront the killer. Even still, they’re both thrown for a loop when the truth behind the murders is revealed. Would fate be so cruel as to bring them together, just to be pulled apart before they have time to truly appreciate their bond? This is romance; what do you think? The way they talk to each other, the way they touch, it all works together to solidify a very tangible bond.

Ms. Woods knows how to build a story around her characters. Cain and Tate are wonderfully drawn out men. They come from totally different worlds and just the idea of mating a butterfly to a lynx seems impossible. Not only does Ms. Woods make it possible, she makes it plausible. I first read a shortened version of this story as a sequence of editions to The Story Orgy’s Monday morning story prompt shorts. She expanded on a clever premise and breathed life into the characters and their struggle. If the short edition was fun and unique the expanded version is completely entertaining. The dialogue is witty and the chemistry palpable. There’s no doubt the men are attracted to one another. When they finally act on those feelings the scene is literally combustible.

If you love a good paranormal but want a story that’s unique and well written. Look no further than Flying High by Em Woods. She’s an auto buy for this reader and I’m looking forward to seeing what she comes up with next.

What happens when two opposites realise they have more in common than expected?

I’m a dancer…and a damn good one. I work at the Silver Steel Gentlemen’s Club. My hard and fast rule? No freebies and no office dating. Except for Slade. Hard, fast, slow, gentle…I don’t care. I’ll take him any way possible. But he’s not that into me.

Or so she thinks. I’m a bouncer at the Silver Steel. Astra doesn’t realise I see her—I can’t help myself. She captivates me every time she’s on the stage. I want her, but I have a…problem. I’m not at the Steel to pick up chicks or even work the room. I’m there to stop the influx of drugs into the community. Yeah, I’m a cop. But if the job means sampling the dancers… Well, as long as I keep my heart out of it, I’ll be fine.

I hope.

Sometimes, the unlikeliest people find the most in common. Months of undercover work by Sergeant Randy McCall, as bouncer Slade McMann at The Silver Steel Gentlemen’s Club, should soon show results. Trying to stop the influx of drugs has led right him to the club and its owner, Salazar ‘Tiny’ Balthazar. But six months undercover still hasn’t produced results, and Randy/Slade would love to get back to his own life once more. Astra Lee is a dancer at the club, one that Slade should stay away from, but she’s his one weakness. Astra senses that Slade is different from the men she’s usually attracted to, and believes she can trust him with her secrets and maybe even her heart. But can these two have a chance at happiness, when there are so many secrets left untold between them? Can Astra trust the handsome bouncer, or is he just another of Tiny’s goons? Can Randy/Slade protect Astra when things start getting dangerous, or are these people just too different to last?

Over My Head is a dark and dangerous romance, with secrets and peril around each corner. This is reminiscent of pulp fiction or noir, with an atmosphere of earlier times and places. The characters are well developed, and the situation is fraught with danger at every turn for out intrepid hero and heroine. I like the gritty reality Ms Zwaduk has injected into this story, and found myself holding my breath at times waiting to see the outcome.

Astra Lee is determined to make a better life for herself, and wants to get away from her former lover, Salazar Balthazar and all he embodies. She wants to feel safe, but she has more than just herself to worry about now. And she’s worried about putting someone else, namely Slade, in danger from Tiny and his goons. I liked Astra, and her sense of self preservation, and her courage in standing up for herself in the face of danger. And I liked that, deep down, there was that tiny spark of hope that she could get out and find a new life.

Sergeant Randy McCall/Slade McMann is the strong, silent and protective hero in this. He wants to do his job and get back to his old life, but he feels drawn to Astra and wants to help her in any way he can. I liked his honesty, his loyalty and his determination to protect the innocents while taking down the bad guys. I also appreciated that he was willing to accept Astra as she is, knowing her past with Tiny and accepting the inherent danger that it may cause.

Wendi Zwaduk has built a dark and dangerous world in Carrington Falls, one where drugs and bad men abound. But she has also provided the strong and sexy hero to fight the good fight to save the day. I enjoyed the edge to this story, and the secrets that are slowly revealed as the story moves to its inescapable conclusion. If you prefer your romance to have a dark and dangerous appeal, and your happy ever after hovering on the edge of doubt, this one is for you.
