He had such a pessimistic outlook on life that I struggled to relate to him even though I had a lot of sympathy for what he must have been going through since his sister disappeared. With that being said, I was impressed with where Mr. Shehadeh went with this character after establishing Ansel as someone who didn’t find a lot of hope in life and who couldn’t stop obsessing over what might have happened to his sibling.

I’d recommend Red to anyone who has ever wished they could go back in time and change something about their pasts.

The plot twists were handled nicely. The characters in this story used terms to describe the world they lived in that were never really explained clearly to the audience. As interested as I was in figuring out what they were talking about, it was a little frustrating for me as a reader to see so many references to certain events and other things that I was never quite able to completely understand. A little more exposition in this area would have gone a long way.

There’s something mysterious about the ocean in general. This is even more true for characters who live in a time when the seas are rising and evolution is working faster than it ever has before. Some of my favorite scenes in this tale were the ones that described why the humans were so afraid and what they encountered every time they wandered out by the sea. Not only were these sections a joy to read, they added a layer of urgency to the plot that made it impossible for me to stop reading until I knew what Mir’s fate would be.

Sweetlings should be read by anyone who loves post-apocalyptic fiction.

What illuminating flashbacks this story had! I could see what purpose every single one of them served, and I honestly almost found myself wishing for more of them due to how much they enhanced the storyline and pushed it forward even though I soon came to the conclusion that there was the perfect number of them after all. The world building was excellent. There was exactly enough time split between giving the audience the details we needed in order to understand what life was like onboard space ships in the distant future and expecting us to put certain clues together ourselves. I enjoyed the challenge of figuring out the less obvious but still quite important parts of this world while at the same time having a fairly clear picture of how everything worked in general.

Hexagrammaton is a must-read for anyone who loves aliens, space ships, or characters who might not be everything they seem at first glance.

The ending was beautifully written. Not only did it tie up the main conflicts of the story nicely, it also left me yearning for more. I finished the final scene wishing I could find out what happened next while also feeling satisfied with how much the author shared with me about what happened to the characters at this particular time and place in their lives. This isn’t to say that I’ll ever stop hoping for a sequel, but I was quite pleased with how everything was tied up by the last sentence.

The flashbacks were handled well. At first I was a little surprised to see so many of them popping up, but they fit into the plot so perfectly that I treasured every single one of them. With that being said, this was still an incredibly satisfactory read. Saffron, the confection taster, and Danny, her spouse and the Head Pastry Chef, had experienced a great deal of pain in their lives. More than anything, I wanted them to figure out a way to find meaning in all of their previous experiences with disappointment and grief. Finding out how or if they might have been able to do this gave me a deep sense of satisfaction. I truly loved seeing how these characters grew and changed over the short amount of time I had to get to know them.

The characters in this story lived in a world where it was possible to transfer pain from one person to another. I would have liked to see a little more time developing the ending. There was a plot twist there that was as surprising as it was gripping. After suddenly realizing how much it was going to affect all of the characters’ lives, it was a bit disappointing to not be able to see how all of those changes were going to play out for them. Imagining it was amusing, but I would have liked to at least had a hint of what the author thought was going to be the logical conclusion of this twist.

Not every character has to be likeable in order to be memorable. The author did a good job of rounding out the two main characters in this tale no matter how they decided to behave. While I’m still not sure I’d want to meet one of them, I did find it interesting to compare their most negative traits to the kind things they’d done as well. That nuance helped me to learn to appreciate this character regardless of what I thought of some of their choices.

A Burden Shared was a truly creative piece of science fiction. It should be read by anyone who is in the mood for something out of the ordinary.

Even now I’m not entirely sure that my understanding of the end was what the author meant to say. Had this section been clearer to me, I would have felt comfortable choosing a higher rating for this book.

The description of Kristine and Noel’s marriage was well written. They’d been together for so long that they were obviously quite comfortable around each other. Seeing such a settled and stable couple go through a horrifying experience that defied explanation made it impossible for me to stop reading. I simply had to know what would happen to them next.

Dark Warm Heart made me shudder. It should be read by anyone who finds joy in being frightened.

One of the biggest reasons why I was so curious to read this tale was because I couldn’t wait to see how Cu, the enhanced chimpanzee, was going to be portrayed. There were pacing issues. After an exciting opening scene, things slowed down for the characters. This made it tricky for me to remain as interested in their case as I’d been in the beginning due to how much time was passing from one revelation to the next. If not for this issue, I would have chosen a much higher rating for this tale.

The technological advances in this universe were impressive. Not only was a chimpanzee able to integrate into human society almost seamlessly, there were many other advancements that had been made that were just as impressive as this one. For example, humans had become capable of doing things with the help of certain types of technology that simply wouldn’t be possible in our current time. I can’t say much else about this without giving away spoilers, but I did enjoy imagining what it would be like to live in a place where so many almost-magical things were viewed as completely commonplace for the characters in this world.

Meat and Salt and Sparks mixed plenty of mystery elements into this scifi tale. I’d recommend it to fans of both genres.

Lake, the main character, had a complicated relationship with her young son. She cared about him quite a bit, but she also had unreasonably rigid expectations of what sort of child he should be. Every time he failed to live up to her expectations, I wondered how she was going to react to that and if she’d learn how to accept him for who he was instead of pushing him to be someone he wasn’t. There were times when it was difficult to see her project her desires onto him so relentlessly, but I was always intrigued by the justifications she came up with for her behavior.

It would have been nice to have a few more details about the setting. For example, it was never quite clear to me how the virtual world that Lake wanted to spend all of her time in made enough money to stay viable. Characters who lived in the real world had to work for a living, so I could only assume there’d need to be some sort of virtual economy as well to pay for things like electricity and upkeep of the highly sophisticated computer programs that people lived in.

One of the other things that Ms. Prell excelled at in this tale was describing how mental illness can affect every facet of someone’s life. Lake’s diagnosis was never entirely clear, but she was obviously struggling with the conflict between the parent she wished she could be and the parent she actually was to her kid. These struggles extended to other parts of this character’s life as well, from her occupation to her relationship with the father of her son.

I’d recommend The Need for Air to anyone who has ever had mixed emotions about someone or something that they loved.
