I enjoyed this fast paced story. Bones’ team is full of characters and clearly the author plans a story for each of them. I was delighted that Bones wasn’t just the leader of the group but was a complicated and multi-layered character that I really enjoyed getting to know over the course of the story. While at first he might have appeared as a playboy it quickly became apparent that there was a lot more to him and I was pleased he proved early on that he deserved to be the leader of their team and didn’t take it for granted. Abigail’s character took me a little longer to warm up to. While smart and sensitive I had mixed feelings about her being so out of her element in Kenya. There were a few really stupid mistakes on her part – like not thinking they’d need a translator in a tiny African village, or just assuming their basic attempts to contain the virus would be just fine and not having any contingencies or back up plan. On the one hand this made Abigail feel more human and fallible to me and I could relate to her better, but I also thought it was deeply stupid and slightly arrogant on her behalf, too.

I enjoyed how there were a number of layers to the story which I felt kept it complicated and interesting – but also kept the pace moving forward quickly. The medical/virus story was well written and I felt it was a solid plotline. There were a few surprises in both Abigail and Bones’ past which kept me on my toes and helped keep the story feel fresh as the focus shifted around. This, coupled with the interesting security team with the group of different characters as well as the sexual chemistry smoldering between Bones and Abigail the story had a good flow and pace and I really enjoyed it. With plenty of action and the delicious back-drop of Kenya added into the mix this is a story I feel should appeal to a wide range of readers.

This is a great story and one I thoroughly enjoyed reading – I’m eagerly looking forward to the second in the series.

Harald and Selia are now married and taking up residence in Mercia– far from the king’s court and, they hope, from the various intrigues and machinations that thrive in political turmoil. Unfortunately for them (and fortunately for us) things do not go as smoothly as they would like.


Once again, I love the characters – especially Harald, Selia, Ravya, and Erral. They are wonderfully complex and multi-dimensional. It’s interesting to see how they overcome their pasts and strive to become the people they want to be.

It’s obvious the author has done his research, and I really appreciate all the small things he does to flavor the story, the small tidbits of the daily life of the period and the scattering of foreign words (clearly explained by the context of the sentence).

The story is fast-paced with enough twists and turns to hold the reader’s attention. Wonderful job, Mr. Pettersen! I can hardly wait to read further adventures in The Atheling Chronicles.

I really liked her in this book and she was, hands down, my favorite character throughout. Aiden took awhile to grow on me. On his own, he seems pretty decent, but when he’s with Maggie, he’s kind of a jerk. It’s understandable, I suppose. He is cursed and doesn’t want to be in a relationship, even if the wolf seems to want exactly that. Still, even though he spends much of the book trying to push her away, at his heart he’s a good man.

I wasn’t a huge fan of the secondary story of the “bad guy” who pops up. He was a little over the top bad and not entirely necessary to the plot. Also, if you’re looking for on the page sex scenes, you’re not getting them here…it happens, just not on the page, and I have to admit I missed that a bit. More than the actual sex, I missed that tension you get from really well written sexual attraction (especially before the consummation).

But before you think I didn’t like the book–stop! I did! First off, it’s incredibly well written, smooth, clean, descriptive. It really flows well and I never hit bumps in the writing that tossed me out of the story. The author made me laugh out loud a few times (especially at the start when Maggie was trapped in her sleeping bag) and Maggie is just such a strong, amazing character, I loved reading her every time she was on the page.

If you’re looking for a little something different for a paranormal romance, you could do worse than select this book. I liked it well enough, and appreciated the author’s skill well enough, that I’m off to read book two!

I loved the characters – not only the primaries, but also the secondaries…the men who rode with Harald, and would like to know more about them. I’m hoping they will also be included in the rest of the books.

Harald grew up in a lot of ways on this journey he takes. He goes from a wayward boy whose father is sure needs help just to get back to the ship without getting into trouble, to a man worthy of being a king’s son.

And Selia….I loved her from the first. She’s not perfect, but she is the perfect foil for Harald. She also grows into the woman she needs to be to face the future.

There’s nonstop adventure and some moments I really wasn’t sure things were going to work out…it was certainly page turning! I give this a highly deserved five stars!

I wanted to love this book. However, I had to re-read a few parts before I fully understood what was happening. Granted, that may just have been my issue. I had slight difficulty keeping track of the characters’ interactions with each other. Also this is a very hot book. I suspected this would be a spicy read from the blurb, but it’s exceptionally so. However, it didn’t affect my enjoyment of this book.

Trevor initially didn’t care for Brooklyn, but that all changed. This was an “enemies-to-lovers” story and thanks to Olivia Peters and her well-written story, “Sweet Redemption”, I am now a fan of that trope.

The characterizations were good and realistic. They had a depth to them that I rarely see and get to read. This story had not just a mystery but showed the closeness of family and friends, as well as not so good or close friends.

I found that the romance was sweet and not the main focus. Even though the romance and chemistry was slow to start, by the time I read half the book, I was rooting for them. I can see their relationship develop from strangers to becoming the most important people for each other.

The climax was a climax to remember. Great for readers who want a mystery as well as that family and friends feel.

Can love really conquer all?

I adored the chemistry between Elaine and her husband Ethan. They were newlyweds when this tale began, and their giddiness at starting their lives together made me eager to find out what would happen to them after Elaine got pregnant much sooner than they’d been expecting her to. While welcoming a baby into their family so quickly was a strain on their finances, their excitement over soon becoming parents was contagious.

There were some plot holes regarding the bad news that Elaine received after her prenatal exam that made it difficult for me to get into this story. The diagnosis was so serious that I was pretty surprised by the fact the doctor didn’t notice it earlier and that the characters didn’t get a second opinion. I even briefly wondered if this was supposed to be set decades ago because of how little information they had about what was happening and what the treatment options were. Eventually, I decided that it was probably meant to be a contemporary story, but these plot holes made it tricky to know for sure as well as to understand why certain scenes were written the way they were.

With that being said, I adored the ending. It fit the tone of the plot quite nicely. Christmas is a magical time of the year, so I was glad to see how that season played out when Elaine and Ethan were struggling with so much uncertainty and grief. This was a heartwarming thing for me to read as the holiday season approaches.

I’d recommend The Power of Love to anyone who wants to get into the spirit of Christmas a little early this year.

The cast of characters was relatively small – the village is there in the backdrop, but the main cast of characters can be distilled to two couples and two mothers. And, I would love to read more about all of them. I can see Ben and Juno getting mixed up with other mysteries. I would really like to revisit them.

The mystery was first rate – I was definitely surprised with the twists and turns. The characters were likable, and I found myself cheering them on (as well as shaking my head in disbelief at how slow on the uptake Ben was at times).

All in all, a pleasant way to spend a few hours.

There is non-stop action with Jacob being somewhat of an anti-hero as he takes care of business when his sister is in danger. As I was reading it, I could so see this being an action-thriller on the big screen. There are many characters, but the author does a wonderful job at keeping them all separate and unique.

Because this book is completely steeped in the darkness of organized crime, it is dark, gritty, violent, and bloody, but there is also an element of family loyalty and love present. I found myself rooting for Jacob even as he was taking out his enemies, and I’m not normally a bloodthirsty type!

The book is well plotted and well written… I hated to put it down and stayed up way too late to read this. And, I have to say the ending caught me off guard…..good job, sir. Very well played. This is my first book by Jonathan Dunne but it certainly will not be my last one.

Jack is a well developed character that totally gave me a closeness that made me feel compassion for his story, his sadness, his pain. Jack’s daughter, Zoe and his dog, Trax were killed and his wife is missing. Jack’s life has been in a downhill spiral. He left his home and his job as a well known and loved homicide detective. Lately he has been tormented by a killer who has been sending him text messages that contain the locations of women who have been killed. While dealing with all of this he has taken up doing P.I. work. Carl Boyd was given Jack’s name to help investigate his wife Bonnie’s disappearance. Let me warn you. You are in for a suspenseful treat! The author delivered three suspenseful story lines masterfully.

This is a good opener to the Jack Slaughter Thrillers. I enjoyed the beautiful description of the California scenery. The detailed description of the city and sights gave the story a vivid illustration for me. I love that the author’s description wasn’t so wordy or so detailed as to cause the story to drag. I admired Jack’s resilience and drive. His story was relayed in detail where it seems to have no resolution to his spiral of depression but he steps outside of his own pain to assist in finding a local serial killer and solving the case of missing Bonnie Boyd.

The case of the serial killer is solved. Jealousy, a sick sense of self pleasure drives the killer but with Jack on the case the murders didn’t go unsolved. The case of missing Bonnie Boyd I wasn’t sure who was behind her absence. Does Bonnie’s disappearance have anything to do with the serial killer on the lose? Mr. Boyd is looking pretty guilty to me. Did he have something to do with his wife’s disappearance? The spouse is always the first suspect – right? You will get the answers to all of your questions except for Jack’s personal case. Yes the author leaves us with a cliffhanger on this one but a story such as Jack’s can’t be wrapped up in one book. I am looking forward to reading more about him!

A warning to reader, the book does contain crude language and some of the murder scenes may be unsuitable for some. I enjoyed this story and look forward to reading the next book in the series. Highly recommended!
