Her narrative is clear and easy to read, but unfortunately the storyline tends to drag until the drama and mystery really come into play. Then I found myself not being able to turn pages fast enough. The romance is that often too impossible to avoid but usually never ends well — the office romance — and this one is no less ill fated than others. The readers will get to run the gamut with the characters as they stumble their way through to their very deserving Happy Ever After. As the only female guest, Maddie attracts a fair amount of attention. As a novice fisherman (or woman) she attracts even more. As a woman, she manages to ingratiate herself with the staff and find out more about her mystery morning swimmer.

The plot twists and turns and were hard to follow at times. I found I had to re-read sections due to my confusion, or having had to put the book down (we all have to sleep sometimes). There are a lot of layers to the characters and this adds to the plot (and sometimes to the confusion).

While the romantic scenes are fairly generic, Maddie’s adventure skinny dipping has everything you want from a heroine’s escapade. Her run-in with the “panty-remover” is also another excellent scene.

While this is not your “typical” romance novel, it is a great read for someone who likes a quirky story, plot twists and turns, or even those gentlemen around us who like a good read!

Anne has no idea why Mr. Fairfax is in such a flutter. Her present is a simple book of illustrations. The subject interests them both, and she would like nothing better than to examine the book—and Mr. Fairfax—more closely.

They are used, however, too frequently in the work. I found myself being pulled out of the story by these unusual terms and, although I was able to immediately return to the Regency world, they interrupted the flow of the book, thus reducing my overall enjoyment of the experience.

The only other disappointing aspect was the somewhat heavy-handed introduction of a linking thread in the character of Mr. Pratt. His appearance seemed a bit convenient for my taste, although the character and his actions were well portrayed.

Although I do not often read romantic comedies, I frequently watch them at the movies and am charmed by their joie de vivre. That joy and comic spirit are wonderfully alive in the characters and action of Gifts Gone Astray. If you’d like to experience laughter as the hero and heroine fall in love, this is the book to read!

Inherited Danger is a romantic suspense with a western/cowboy theme, there’s a few parts in the story where I read glimpses of the villain’s point of view. There are plenty of suspicious characters and I was left guessing until the very end. I felt the plot lines were tied up well at the end and the mystery was definitely the strongest point of this book.

If you enjoy romantic suspense with a western feel, then pick yourself up a copy of Inherited Danger.

Ms. Greer wasted no time in setting the dark tone of the story. “The autumn wind always cut through bone like a surgical knife, but today it was especially incisive as she stood against it, her long hair unfurling behind her. On the edge of Berry Creek Cemetery, bony trees waved stiffly in the breeze like standing dead men.” With great descriptive language like this, I was pulled into the story and felt as though I were standing in the cold with Lillian as her father was buried.

Lillian had my sympathy from page one. The weight she had to bear could have crushed her, but she is made of stronger stuff than most. Rather than immersing herself in grief, Lillian takes a chance and accepts her grandmother’s invitation to stay at Magnolian in Alabama. When she finds that she’s being haunted by the ghost of Samson, Lillian again proves what a tough character she is. Rather than running scared, she immediately sets out to solve the mystery of Samson’s death. I loved Lillian’s spirit and resolve to discover the truth, no matter what that might be.

Lillian has a couple of love interests in the story. Donovan Ross is the piano player at her church in Pittsburgh. He is very easy to like. He is a quiet, thoughtful soul with a gift for music. When Lillian’s father died, he is there to comfort her and never asks for anything in return. Could Lillian’s relationship with Donovan a budding romance? Lillian also finds herself drawn to Willoughby Tate. Will is the complete opposite of Donovan. A happy ending is certainly implied, but readers looking for grand gestures and declarations won’t find them in this story.

Ms. Greer weaves the mystery surrounding Gretchen, Lillian’s mother, and Samson very well. The ghostly visits and nightmares combined with Gretchen’s journal entries make for an intriguing story. The list of suspects was small, but I was completely surprised when the culprit was revealed. While I do enjoy being surprised at the end of the book, I have to say that I found the conclusion of the mystery to be a little implausible. The character behind Samson’s tragedy had a clear motive and a very ugly disposition underneath a friendly mask. However, this character would have had to hide their not only their crime, but their true nature from their family, friends, Samson’s father, and an entire close knit community for a very long time. I have a hard time believing this character could pull that off without making anyone even a little suspicious.

I must mention that there were three places where Samson was mistakenly referred to as Percy’s grandson. In fact, Samson was Percy’s son. The first time this happened, it really confused me and pulled me out of the story. I had to go back a read a couple sections to reaffirm that Samson was indeed Percy’s son. Once I had this cleared up in my mind, the other two incidents where he was referred to as a grandson didn’t bother me as much and I was able to remain engaged in the story

Over all, I enjoyed reading Magnolian. Lillian is a well rounded character and her lighter romantic dilemma offsets the tragic tale of Samson and Gretchen quite nicely. I recommend Magnolian to anyone looking for an intriguing mystery with a touch of romance.

How can the night get any worse? Richard Latimer is tired, wet and has a strained ankle. Circumstances are revealed but the damage is done. The trust and integrity that both Geni and Richard desire in a marriage is broken. Neither believes they have a chance with the other. Geni refuses to marry an unfaithful man and Richard doesn’t believe he is unworthy to have a loving wife. Problem is they both have wonderful first impressions of each other. Could they both be wrong about what they discovered about one another and just jumped to mistaken conclusions?

Just when you think the characters will never get back on track and have their happy ending Ms. Dolan surprises us. She has done a great job of introducing situations that draw them back together. I do wish though that she would have tied up more loose ends. It would have been nice to have an epilogue wrapping them up and maybe a look into what happened to Geni and Richard. I felt the ending was abrupt and rushed.

Deceptive Behavior is your standard historical romance. It is a sweet story with no big surprises. It has all the components; quirky relatives, love found then lost, misunderstandings and a happily ever after. Same old formula but it still works. It’s a pleasant read if you are looking for a straightforward and enjoyable historical romance.

She never imagined she’d run into Liam again. Liam was there nine years ago when Elisa was dating Brett, her ex-jerk of a boyfriend. While the characters are strong and the pace is fast, I felt that the plot could have been a little tighter. Sure, there’s conflict, there are untold secrets, and there are reasons the pair could be torn apart forever, but it felt weak. The suspense of what Liam would say to certain secrets was high, but his reaction didn’t seem all that intense.

Still, if you enjoy reading a story with a hero and heroine with a common past, this story would be a good choice. It’s about second chances, finding love despite all the odds against them, and uncovering truths from the past. Full Circle is enjoyable and a good read, I am glad I picked it to review.

Jean Luc Desloge, who’d crawled into a bottle to escape from feelings of guilt, puts the bottle away as soon as Marcella steps off the stage. His struggle with himself and life in general almost overwhelms at times, but he perseveres. Knowing more about his life before the war and its devastating effectives would have helped me understand some of his actions better. His sense of responsibility and the connection he feels with Marcella give him determination to help the people he cares about as they reach for their dreams. His old friend Jasper Rollins, who understands better than most how much personal freedom and independence mean, helps Desloge as all get ready to make a cattle drive from Texas to Kansas.

The secondary characters give strength to the story. Even though they are flawed and damaged by lives they have lived, they find the courage to work hard to fulfill long-hoped-for new starts in life. Queenie, Polly, June Bug, and Glory B, the ladies of the night, and other women who hired on as drovers strive to escape the roles of servitude they’ve endured up to now. While the vehicle of a cattle drive with all its rigors demands that one suspend disbelief, the results of the down-trodden women gaining a sense of self-worth, independence, and hope of fulfilling dreams, makes an uplifting story. The telling rather than showing at times puts the reader at a distance, but the desire to know how these resilient women cope in what is usually men’s work keeps one reading.

Barbara Scott slips humor into this story of redemption making it fun to read, while she weaves in a love story amid all the trials and troubles of living in the post Civil War West where life was hard even in the best of times.

I chose this book because I enjoy the Silhouette Desire series, and stories of Sheikhs. To Touch A Sheikh has it all. In this, the final book in Ms Gate’s Pride of Zohayd trilogy, the author’s writing is fluent, her settings pull you in and her characters have depth and strength, though they aren’t altogether as memorable as usual.

Ms Gates’ opening is a cracker. The attempted murder of her hero, Prince Amjad Aal Shalaan, results in shattered trust, retribution, and consequences that linger for several years.

Amjad may be a wounded hero who’s sworn off women but when Princess Maram foils his plans for her father, Amjad swiftly adjusts his plans. It is because I ‘knew’ Maram had secretly loved Amjad for the whole of her life that I understood why she put her trust in him so easily, even if at times she exasperated me with her level of acceptance. Since the whole theme of the book is about trust, past, present and future, it comes as no surprise that Maram has some major choices to make when her trust is severely tested.

Ms. Gates uses her secondary characters (some that you don’t even meet in this book)to spin multi-layered webs of deceit and treachery through the story.

To Touch a Sheikh is a pleasurable read with palace intrigues that ultimately force the hero and heroine to work together to uncover the mastermind behind the plots.
