Jake Carson’s dream of becoming a cattle rancher has just become a reality when two of his men are shot and he is left for dead. His cattle are rustled, and now, by golly, he’s bent on revenge. Jake’s story of survival, revenge, and finding love makes a satisfying, quick read, and the story moves along at a lively pace.

Jake and Yani, a Ute Indian maiden, are complex and well-developed characters. Yani wants to please her family, but that would mean giving up Jake. Jake knows that Yani isn’t free to choose him, so he keeps his distance. Yet they have a hard time keeping apart.

The setting, 1850’s Utah Territory, is vividly drawn out and sufficiently exotic that it held my interest throughout. Even though I’ve never been to Utah, Ms. Suzanne’s writing helped me to clearly picture the vast expanses. Yani’s dilemma, whether or not to submit to the traditional marriage arranged by her tribe, or to give in to her feelings for Jake, is one many readers, whatever their ethnicity, can relate to. The author did an excellent job of building up Jake’s motivation and determination for revenge. I had no doubt that he would be ready, willing and able to shoot the three bad guys if and when he ever caught up to them. Apart from the revenge factor, I pulled for Jake and Yani to have a happy ever after.

I couldn’t help but want more. This story felt like a novel compressed into the space of a short story. The tale begins with a bit of an info-dump, three pages of straight back story, before we get into the guts of the tale, where Jake is driving his cattle to Salt Lake City to sell. However, Mary Suzanne knows how to tell a story. Once past the initial three pages, I couldn’t put it down so I encourage other readers to push on through.

The end felt real and satisfying, and I thought about Jake and Yani long after I finished reading. If you’re looking for a quickie to pass the time, this story won’t disappoint.

She places the story in the future, after all cities have been destroyed by a killing flu that crossed the land, and the only survivors behave a lot like the American Indians did long ago. There are nomadic tribes and tribes that stay in one location and grow all the vegetables for the group as well as raise animals. The two tribes share their goods and it keeps them alive and in pretty good health. The author’s words take you to an imaginary world in the future that’s dangerous and unusual and holds your attention as you follow Sahara’s challenges.

Sahara butts heads with him several times and Ms. Benson’s use of this conflict draws you in and makes you care about Sahara.

This is tale of a journey from childhood to a young adult that catches your attention with an interesting plot and plenty of challenges for Sahara. You’ll have to read the book to find out why Sahara knows about horses. You’ll also be glad you did.

I found the concept of “killing” the vampire blood in a person with a spell interesting, and not something I remember coming across in other vampire stories.

I liked Samantha. She has a lot of information dumped on her in a very short amount of time. Not only does she learn that vampires, werewolves, and witches exist, but that she is also part vampire and witch. She completely freaks out at first, which I think is the normal reaction any sane person would have. However, she eventually accepts the truth of her situation and commits herself to figuring out a way to save herself and protect her family. Her devotion to her family is certainly admirable.

As if dealing with her paranormal heritage weren’t enough, Samantha has two boys vying for her affection. There were moments when I thought more would be revealed, but then the pace picked up again and I was left wanting more depth.

The biggest issue that I have with the story is that there were too many unanswered questions by the time the story ended. I had questions about Samantha’s father and his situation and why it took so long for her to figure things out about him. Why did Samantha’s mom want her daughter to live a “normal” life, but chose to tell her son about his heritage as a witch? These and other questions filled my mind as I read, and I kept hoping they would be answered. However, when Darkness Within ended, I found myself wishing there had been more detail and background information to round the story out.

Despite this issue, I thought Darkness Within was a good read. The plot was interesting and unique, and Samantha is certainly a sweetheart. Since the story is short and fast paced, it is possible to enjoy it in a single sitting. Anyone looking for a quick, entertaining paranormal YA romance should consider Darkness Within.

All in all this was a very enjoyable read and it’s made me want to not only go back to read the first three but I am now looking forward to her next adventure in these chronicles.

If you love the science fiction genre, especially one with a great romance, this will fit the bill. It did for me.

Alice is so tired of being alone. It doesn’t help when she has to give up going to her sister’s for Christmas because she has this book to illustrate. She can’t get inspired or in the spirit at all. Riding the Harley through the sky, listening to dead musicians make music in the heavens, and painting here and there on a night that never ends is great fun for Alice. This fun fantasy tale will keep you reading and waiting to see just what happens next. The author of the book she’s illustrating plays a part in this story, too. I didn’t see this ending coming, and I consider that an accomplishment for the author.

Why not try this read for yourself. It’d be a great book to read while sitting in front of the fire and sipping a hot chocolate. Just don’t drink and read at the same time … you might make a mess when you laugh out loud at the great humor the author shares.
