Every family has its share of quirky relatives and old rivalries. What the Freitag’s are dealing with, though, goes far beyond anything you could possibly imagine.

The character building in this tale was excellent. I got to know Ben’s personality so quickly and thoroughly that it only took me a few scenes to notice when he suddenly wasn’t acting like himself. This is a difficult thing to pull off in a short story. The fact that the author was able to do it so early on in the plot makes me eager to check out everything else they’ve written. I was really impressed, and I can’t wait to see what they come up with next.

This is an extremely minor criticism, but I would have liked to see the narrator spend a little more time explaining what Ben and his family knew about Baba Fête before she arrived at their home. There were a few things about her relationship with them that I found slightly odd because of how quickly Ben glossed over what should have been early warning signs that something was wrong. This could have easily been explained with a little more attention paid to her origins and what she was capable of doing. Had it been explained fully, I would have given this book a perfect rating as I loved everything else about it!

Anticipating what scary things could happen next is a big part of why I like the horror genre so much. The pacing in this book gave me plenty of opportunities to wonder what Baba Fête was up to and why so many of the people around her were suddenly getting sick. I couldn’t wait to find out what was happening, but I was also glad that the author revealed it all so leisurely. That pacing style worked perfectly for the plot and the characters.

Baba Fête is a must read for anyone who enjoys being frightened as much as I do.

Griffin Stone and Frankie Moore met at the shelter for battered women where Frankie lives after she went homeless and where Griffin is helping battered women by doing the sculptures for them. At first Griffin thinks that Frankie is also a victim of abuse, but when she tells him a truth (which is that she was never a victim, but almost become one) he is already too much into her to stop their relationship.

Griffin is a son of abuse and his mother never left his abusive father. He thinks that he will also become abusive and that’s why he doesn’t want a serious relationship. Frankie is a college graduate and she is “jump first, think later” kind of person. She knows that she would like to become a professional photographer, but does not pursue this goal very diligently. Their worlds, but especially Griffin’s, are completely changed when they meet and fall in love,.

Although Frankie is not sure what to do with her life, she is strong girl and she is the one who helps Griffin to cast away his demons. She does not take any stupidity from him and she pushes him out of his comfort zone. Griffin is a dark and complex character. At the beginning of the story he is full of rage. He resents his father and has strong mixed feelings about his mother.

The topic of Shatterproof goes beyond a love story. The author deals with issue of domestic violence, children who are witnessing it and the question why victims stay in abusive relationship. But it also demystifies the idea that domestic violence is related to poverty or particular social status, because Griffin parents are neither poor nor his father is alcoholic.

Shatterproof is a great story written from a dual POV that deals realistically with the issue of domestic violence. Readers should be warned that the story contains scenes of violence without which the story would not be authentic. So if one does not have problem with it, read this story, it is truly magnificent.

One thing about the writing that caught my attention, in a good way, was the author’s attention to describing the setting and atmosphere in detail. The way she describes the strip club, the lights and music, the way she dresses the characters, it was colorful and three dimensional. I could see it and felt drawn into the scene.

I did pick up on one or two inconsistencies within the story that drew me out briefly (one sentence says she’d never eaten at Esmeralda’s and the next chapter begins by stating it’s her favorite place). The other was his knowledge and then seeming lack of knowledge about the Ballet Gala. These weren’t game ending issues, just noticeable items that are easily fixed.

I haven’t read any of Ms. Alsen’s other books but I did check them out after I met Veronica’s friends. I’d like to read the others to get a better feel for this town and these people. There’s some insta-love between Simon and Veronica that could be attributed to the fact that this is a short story. I did enjoy the fact that love seemed to give Veronica some growth and self confidence. She was able to stand up to her snooty parents and ask for what she wanted.

This is an enjoyable short story and piqued my interest to see how some of the other couples came together. Readers who enjoy opposites attract kind of stories, will likely enjoy this little novella.

I enjoyed Forged by Love and found it to be an inspiring heart warming book. Josie and Douglas are two people left by blood family in a world that could only see and judge them by the color of their skin. Or so they thought. Love of family doesn’t always have to be from blood kin. Josie and Douglas both were fortunate to have love and a family bond from others that have claimed them as family. Being left by his birth mother Douglas thinks that he is alone with no family. Josie is the daughter of a heartless man that sold her mother. Josie finds her way into Douglas’ heart and by the end of the story they both have more loved ones than they realized. It was so refreshing and really touched my heart the pure love that they had for each other and also how the town stood behind them when they were threaten.

The connection between Douglas and Josie was a pleasure to read. Seeing them build and grow from less fortunate circumstances gave their story a honest, and innocent love that is inspiring to read about. I liked that the author showed them in such innocence and that they waited until they were married to have relations. That made their relationship so much stronger and better that they had self-control.

I didn’t want to stop reading until I knew how their story would end. Close to the end of the book, 91% read my Kindle gave me the battery low alert. I was so caught up and excited to find out the out come, but still a part of me didn’t want the story to end. The author has a talent for writing and telling a story that is sure to capture readers. The plot, the characters are realistic and likable and the time in history just makes the story come together in a perfect formula. My favorite character is Dorothea. She is a young woman that is not afraid to speak her mind and stand up for what is right and good.

I would like to read more of the characters on Lobster Cove. This is a book that I would highly recommend for readers that enjoy characters that are against all odds yet they stand forged by love.

That being said, I’m definitely going to be picking up the other books in the series as I really enjoyed McLaren.

I don’t want to say too much about the plot of this book, to avoid spoilers—it is a mystery, after all, and you don’t want that spoiled. Suffice it to say Ms. Hiestand does a masterful job at solving the case which turns out to be a lot more complicated than it appeared on the surface.

I liked the main character—Michael McClaren is a former policeman turned private detective, but this time the mystery he’s solving is a lot more personal. He’s not perfect, but he is good at solving puzzles—this one is multi-faceted, but McClaren is definitely up for the job.  A solid entry in the mystery category!

She was a woman who had proven herself and someone I could cheer for. I liked that the author didn’t have her turn into a weepy pile of goo as soon as she sees Connell. Yes, her body reacts to his closeness and concern but her priorities are in order. Her people come first.

I wanted her to be strong but I also didn’t want her to be so completely stubborn that she wouldn’t allow herself to see that Connell had changed as well. He’d been a boy of nineteen when they were married. He wasn’t a boy any longer and he’d had plenty of time to realize who had truly poisoned their chance at a happy marriage. Plus, he was able to see his own part in the fallout. He was a mature man, king of his clan, and still very attracted to the mother of his son. It was sweet and then it got hot.

I did expect the dialogue to be more of the period. It was almost too modern. The author obviously studied up on the era and used correct vernacular to describe the homes and the clothes as well as titles. Thankfully, I wasn’t drawn out of the story because of the dialogue, it was just noticeable. I’ve read some Historicals where the brogue can be so thick I couldn’t understand what I was reading without a translation dictionary but this was more on the other end of the spectrum. It was set in Ireland but it didn’t really feel Irish when they spoke.

The setting was very nicely described. I could see the way the villages were set up, the forest surrounding and the river running near Fianna’s home. The reader isn’t present for the initial battle that took place but the author describe the destruction and death and violence of the Vikings who decimated her clan’s home. That was exceptionally realistic.

Be sure to read the forward in this book regarding Irish laws and customs. It was beneficial in putting me in the right frame of mind to see the Irish culture of the period depicted as opposed to looking at it from a modern American standpoint.

This was nice period piece where land, loyalty and courage were highly valued. It’s a “one-sitting” story that has potential if the author ever decided to expound on Fianna and Connell’s world. There are secondary characters introduced who give the story some dimension. Ms. Kelly obviously likes to portray strong women and this is a short story worth spending time with.

A Love Lifted out of the Ruins

Shona is a Highland lass who has seen enough death and judgement to last a lifetime. It’s no wonder she’s wary when Angus literally staggers up with a lame pickup line. It was also pretty amusing. I could see her sitting there, one eyebrow raised at his obvious inebriated come on. I was glad to see that she had a little spunk in her even if it often had to be repressed because of heavy handed men in her clan, namely her uncle and guardian.

I kept picturing Ian Somerhalder when Angus was described and I had no problem seeing why Shona was attracted. Outside the tendency toward premature celebratory drinking, which was likely common for the age, he had some truly noble qualities and he loved his clansmen. Still, he’s also a man and Shona is a beautiful lass who doesn’t hate his kisses. Circumstances put them in a position to protect each other and the outcome was decidedly sweet and sexy at the same time.

One of the first things I noticed is that the dialogue feels authentic. This is a Highland setting and I expected to hear the people speak with some form of brogue lilt. It was easy to fall into a pattern of reading it in my mind with the same pattern of speech but it also helped put me into the setting, to feel a part of it.

A couple of interesting twists kept this story alive right to very end. Also, the clan MacAnalen needs to build their hall away from trees, for everyone’s sake. Seriously, if this clan didn’t have bad luck it wouldn’t have any luck at all. I would have liked to have seen Shona have a little more self-confidence in her ability and not have taken quite so long to embrace it. She has reason to worry about how people will react but she takes on so much guilt at what she can or can’t do it’s practically paralyzing. Love is a very powerful motivator and in the end it lends the strength she needs.

There’s a paranormal element to this book, as with all the Highland Talents books. Angus sampled some of that talent in Highland Healer and was less than impressed. I was curious to see how he would react once he realized that Shona shared a similar talent.

There’s mention of what happened in the first book in the Highland Talents series between Toran and his healer, Aileanna, who also make an appearance in this novella. I haven’t read that one, yet, but I’d like to go back and see how this war that tore up so many clans began. Ms. Blair has an easy to read talent for bringing a story to life. Given another opportunity, I look forward to returning to the Highlands with this Ms. Blair to see what new talents make themselves known.

I wanted to see if Maggie would be the type to be stubborn and hold a grudge or smart and seize the opportunity. Her personality won me over quickly.

One of the things that made this a fun read is the flirty dialogue. After they get past the initial misunderstanding, Maggie and Van’s story really began to heat up with some palpable tension, the good kind. The chemistry has to be there for a story of this length to work and the author didn’t shy away from making them completely aware of their reactions to each other. It was like little zings of electricity. Very nice! And then she brought the heat. Really nice!

The second thing that kept me vested in this story was the conflict that came after the first one. Van is a divorce lawyer living in Dallas with zero interest in marriage. This seemed like a lot to overcome in a short time but it’s Christmas in our story and miracles do happen.

I loved how the author ultimately resolves Maggie and Van’s story, especially how Van grows from jaded divorce lawyer to someone who sees the good in others. I’ll just say the ending with “Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus” was way better than the way it opened with a State Farm commercial.

This is a holiday themed book but I would suggest reading it anytime. I was also tickled to see that there are three other books in the series, including Zach and Jessica’s story that made this one possible. This author is going on my auto-read list.

My favorite kinds of stories are those that start off with a little (or a lot) of sexual tension. I want to be just as breathless as the heroine is when she sees the hero and I want him knocked a little off balance when he sees her. This is that kind of story.

It wasn’t all intensity and drama, though. There was a nice sprinkling of humor throughout that kept it from being all dark and broody. The secondary characters had a lot to do with that. The Oracles’ personality is laid out straight (pardon the pun) upfront and I had my suspicions about Shauna’s roommate, Kimmy. And the Squid, there was something about him that made my eyes squint.

Fated mates is usually something I read in shifter stories. No shifters here but I still had to love the idea that these two had been together even before they were technically together. Childhood friends first, star-crossed lovers redefined, these two were on a collision course with destiny and that explosion was guaranteed to be epic.

This one is a wild ride with some interesting if not totally unexpected turns. A fast paced story that had me on tenterhooks for how it would be resolved. I had no doubt it would all work out for an HEA but getting there would not be painless for either Adrian or Shauna.

This was an fantastically crafted story. I ate up the pages and went looking for information on possible future stories. If it happens, it would be an auto-buy for this reader.

Initially I found that Bryan comes across as a bit of an anti-hero. He freely admits that his end goal with any woman is to get her into bed, and it’s not traditional hero behavior to start a relationship with a fundamental lie (that of authorship of the letter Gloria showed him). All that said, I genuinely found Bryan to be a complex and interesting character. While I strongly feel many more traditional romance readers might not warm to him – he doesn’t soften much until about half way through the story – I was drawn by his anti-hero characteristics. There are reasons – good and strong ones – as to why he doesn’t believe in happily ever after endings or the strength and bonds created through a good marriage. These layers made him interesting to me and helped me want to find out why he acts as he did and gave me patience to stick with him when some of his thoughts were less than charitable.

In some ways I found this to be a good-girl-turns-bad-boy-good style of story, but that label doesn’t do it justice. Gloria is older than many normal romance heroines (in her forties) and while Bryan is in his mid-thirties and definitely not some virginal young man, there is that age difference there. But it’s Gloria who in many ways is the innocent. She’s known real love – her dead husband was her soul mate in so many ways and Gloria still views the world through rose coloured glasses. Bryan might have some baggage and not really believe in love, but his feelings for Gloria grow deep and genuine. And I found this a very satisfying story to read and I thoroughly enjoyed watching Bryan twist and turn as he found himself emotionally and romantically growing and changing.

While this wasn’t the most realistic of stories, that normally doesn’t bother me too much. As long as the plotline isn’t outrageous I love reading for the escape. Readers who like their plots more logical and real might find some of the changes Bryan makes difficult to swallow, and other readers might not be able to see past his initial deceptions. The sex scene is sizzling hot and explicit, but there’s no kink or anything I found over the top. Readers who don’t like “bedroom door left open” style scenes might want to skip those parts, but personally I found the scene tastefully written and not added in merely for the sake of having sex. It fit the characters, situation and progression of the story very well to my mind.

I found this a sweet, wonderfully heartwarming story with vibrant characters and complexities in Bryan particularly that I found deeply satisfying to read. I really enjoyed both Gloria and Bryan’s characters and found their proverbial rocky path interesting and romantic. A great book I’ll happily read again.
