Jenn loved her ice cream food truck and enjoyed summer time the best. Camp had an ice cream truck of his own and was desperate to know how Jenn managed to make her truck so successful financially. Barely breaking even, Camp yearns to make his business a success but just doesn’t see how to could do it. Getting closer to Jenn is the logical solution, but she puts all thoughts of business and finance out of his head when she smiles at him.

I enjoyed this sweet and happy short story. I particularly was pleased that while Jenn and Camp are both fairly happy and simple people externally, they both had baggage and a past and were more complicated as they deepened their relationship. This helped them feel more realistic and relatable to me. While I adore uncomplicated and happy characters, something just clicked when they each showed a more vulnerable side and part hurts. I also really enjoyed the fact that while they each had an ice cream food truck and were in a similar area with similar clients they didn’t let this “rivalry” get in the way of friendship and exploring a deeper and more romantic connection between them. They didn’t perceive each other as annoying competitors or stealing anything, but were happy to let their friendship – and more – blossom and grow and work together. I really loved this happiness and positivity and it made the story really fresh and enjoyable to me.

There was a quick blitz of plot toward the end which I felt injected an interesting hint of surprise into the story, but I couldn’t help but feel it came a little out of left field and felt somewhat rushed to me. This didn’t hurt my enjoyment of the story and while a little puzzling certainly made the adventure of Jenn and Camp coming together and beginning their relationship have a bit more zing than the usual sweet and sugary romance.

Sweet and positive – this was a wonderful “feel good” story and one I really enjoyed. Readers looking for a summery, happy and enjoyable short read should find this totally ticks all the right boxes.

When Kingsley Tours – and Brahms Kingsley in particular is offered the chance to take over her store’s rental agreement Bailey and Brahms find themselves circling each other’s orbit once again.

I really enjoyed the complexity of both Bailey and Brahms characters, how they had a number of conflicting desires and feelings that made their relationship – and lack thereof – interesting and slightly different from other stories I’ve read. I also really enjoyed how the small town was filled with a cast of very strong and vibrant secondary characters. It made the community feel really involved but also extremely realistic to me and this greatly enhanced my enjoyment of the story.

While I felt the conflict of the story was pretty clichéd – Brahms’ father’s cruise company buying the lease on Bailey’s family’s shop and the friction this causes between them and the big business coming into the small community – I have to admit all the other elements surrounding the story and the genuine affection Brahms felt for Bailey helped round this feeling out. I also really enjoyed the novel idea Bailey had to help float her ice cream store and bring in a lot more traffic.

I love how the author gave plenty of time and space for Brahms and Bailey to connect and become emotionally involved with each other, with the support of the numerous town folk as well and the friction of Brahms’ father’s new business there was plenty of plot and action pushing the pace of this story along so it was lovely to see Bailey and Brahms taking their time and connecting together a bit more slowly.

Sweet and good this was a lovely story and one I enjoyed.

I found this to be a really enjoyable, happy and light story. While Georgiana’s problems are fairly serious, and a part of me found her solution (to taste a specific ice cream that started her in childhood on the path to opening her own ice cream store) slightly ludicrous, there was a happy, easy and lighthearted charm to the entire setup that had me smiling and eagerly turning the pages. I loved the author’s writing style and really felt like I was there at the Faire Park on the lake, sun shining, water glacial blue with the rides and music like every wonderful memory I have of my own childhood. The author did an amazing job setting the scene and laying everything out and I found myself swept along with Georgiana and her cause.

There is a very sweet romance between Georgiana and Michal. I have to admit the romance is sweet and chaste enough it took me quite a while to really get into it and the concept of them forming a lasting and emotional connection. There was a fair bit of paranormal threaded throughout the story and while I feel like the story could have been equally amazing had there not been quite such a heavy influence of magic and fairies I certainly felt like it added an extra and interesting element to the story.

Light and fun with a hint of summer holidays, delicious ice cream and a very sweet and enjoyable romance, A Neapolitan Fairy Tale At Lake Okoboji is a great read.

Mikayla had come to Pelican Point to enjoy the summer, but also to try and sort out her life. When her old bodyguard shows up she’s surprised, but Austin has news that will rock – and forever change – Mikayla’s world.

This is a short and fast-paced erotic romance story. I enjoyed Austin and Mikayla’s characters and it was clear their long and deep history together had been leading to this exact point where Mikayla was all grown up and Austin was ready to claim her as his own. Readers looking for a deeply paranormal story with intense world-building won’t find that here. While there are magical elements to the story I wish there had been a bit more depth to the world-building. The author handed out some excellent snippets – the looming “Council” position that Mikayla was destined to take up, a potion and a few short bits of performing magic – but overall it felt like the world was just like ours with a few paranormal elements thrown in. I would have enjoyed some more depth to history or explanations about the Council and how/why some people had magical abilities and how they worked.

I enjoyed the romance and steam between Austin and Mikayla and it was deliciously clear they were destined to be together. I couldn’t help that feel both Austin and Mikayla made enormous, life-changing decisions with serious implications rather suddenly and found the situation jarring. Each of them made a complete about-face (Austin about his betrothal and Mikayla about the Council seat) with very little build-up and while I can appreciate there wasn’t a lot of room in such a short story it really felt to me like they were bolts out of nowhere. I would have felt a lot more confidant in their decisions had there been a little more build up, or explanation as to why or how they came to make these important choices, particularly since mere pages before the decisions were made they were expressing polar-opposite opinions. As the reader I wanted to see the lead up both from Austin and Mikayla as to how their opinions changed so drastically and be led with them on this choice – rather than just be told “bang” they had completely changed their mind and were making this life-altering decision.

The last third of the book was absolutely the high point for me – with both a strong magical thread running through the plot and Mikayla and Austin both embracing their love and future I thoroughly enjoyed the way in which the author wrapped up this short story.

With plenty of plot and two interesting characters this overall was a good read.

Does living happily ever after only exist in fairy tales?

Lucy’s character development was delightful. She was pretty bitter and negative when I first met her for reasons that were explained later on in the plot. Honestly, I didn’t like her much at all in the beginning because of her attitude, but that quickly changed as I realized what her past had been like and she began to take stock of her life and change.

The romantic subplot was handled nicely. Not only was the chemistry between Lucy and Nathan on point, they seemed to have compatible lifestyles, personalities, and goals as well. I wanted them to end up together as soon as they had their first scene together, and that wish only grew stronger as I picked up on even more signs that they could be an excellent match. It’s always fun to see two characters who are on the same wavelength like that!

One of the things I loved the most about this story had to do with how realistic Lucy’s problems were in life. She’d been through some true hardships over the years that would have been difficult for anyone to handle. To make matters worse, many of the people in her life were anything but supportive of her troubles in the first few scenes as well. Seeing how she responded to those conflicts showed me so much about who she’d been in the past as well as who she was becoming.

Waffle Cone Magic is a must-read for anyone who has ever wished they could change the past.

Some traditions have beautiful origins.

Is it nature or nurture that leads certain traits to be passed down in families for generations? This is a question I love discussing, and there were plenty of opportunities to think about it here. The contemporary narrator was someone who’d never known much about his great-grandparents at all, and yet he shared so many surprising things in common with them. I really liked the process of comparing his personality and interests to what his ancestors were like nearly eighty years ago.

As much as I enjoyed getting to know Meredith and Anthony through their great-grandson Sebastian’s eyes, I sure would have liked to have more information about what their lives were like during and after World War II. Both of these characters had experiences that were pretty uncommon in the 1940s, so it would have been neat to read more details about their accomplishments and how they achieved them.

The chemistry between Anthony and Meredith was lovely, especially when considering how little time passed between their first meeting and when they both realized they were falling in love. I was impressed with Ms. O’Shay’s attention to detail in these early scenes. She really sold me on the idea of these characters falling in love almost at first sight.

This is part of the One Scoop or Two series, but it works perfectly well as a standalone story.

Always, Almond Fudge should be read by anyone who is in the mood for something sweet and lighthearted.

With a hurricane bearing down and two convicts escaped and on the loose, Janet has no idea just how crazy her life is about to come when she meets Wes, a stranger in the storm.

I really enjoyed this mystery story. I found Janet to be modern and relatable as a character. The double-whammy of both a hurricane and the escaped convicts felt a little over the top as a plot device, but adding in a twin-mix up with Wes and his convict twin, William, had me just disconnecting my brain and enjoying the story. I really liked the style and tone of the author’s voice and I was attached to Janet and curious as to how everything would sort itself out to her. Wes is a strong and honest hero who has found himself – due to his nefarious twin brother – embroiled in an ever-growing series of crazy events. While exciting and a little outrageous, I felt that ignoring the unreality of the situation was a small price to pay to see where it all led, and I’m very glad I stuck with it. This story has plenty of action and as the book progresses the pace gets faster and grows at a good clip, keeping the reader turning the pages to see what happens next.

While the romance between Janet and Wes simmers I was really pleased that the author allowed them both the time and space for their feelings and attraction to grow naturally. Readers who like a slow pace with their romance should find this is suitable. A number of complications arise that Janet and Wes have to overcome – Janet’s abusive ex, Wes’ convicted felon brother, not to mention a hurricane from Mother nature and all sorts of other issues – but watching Janet and Wes truly begin to care and feel connected to each other is a lovely aspect of the story and I was pleased the romance was present and this wasn’t purely a mystery/suspense novel.

With plenty of action and a fast pace once the plot really gets moving, this is an excellent mystery/suspense story with a strong plot and a bunch of interesting characters.

The lead character, Liz, is quite critical of the earlier time and its people, judging them by modern standards. She doesn’t try to fit in and has a tendency to be selfish; though she does try to help out others as well. It must be her way, even in someone else’s time. However, Liz is clever and proves this often while she interferes with known history.

Colton Stone is a newly traded tight end whose reputation is as battered as his football helmet. When he receives a vacation invitation from his new teammates, he accepts. There he collides with Dr. Lillian Morgan, a pediatric cardiovascular surgeon, and doesn’t know what to think.

A widow with two children, Lilly travels to Kauai to attend the wedding of a friend and witness the union she lost three years prior. When she meets Colt, she struggles between letting go of her perfect past for an uncertain future.

Strange events begin to occur, out of the realm of normal consciousness. Black energy touches their world and the couple become pawns of the immortal Greek gods. Is the love between them real, or part of a larger prophecy?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, even though it took me a little bit to get into it. Technically, it can be read on its own, but I think I would have had a better understanding of what was going on in the Greek realm had I read the first book.  Once I got the picture of what was really going on in the background, though, I really got into the book.

Don’t be turned off the book if you aren’t a fan of mythology.  Even without the mythical elements, the romance between Colt and Lily is just a lot of fun. The mythology adds a deeper level to the story that I appreciated.

I loved the characters. The author did a remarkable job at bringing them to life – no stock characters here. And, I have to admit, I had a special place in my heart for Lily’s kids and the way they very quickly wormed their way into Colt’s heart.

The secondary characters were a lot of fun as well, and I can’t wait to go back and read Raven and Finn’s story.

I’m looking forward to reading more from this author. Good job, Ms. Heckman!

Can Darrell and Cassie expose those behind the crimes before they end up becoming the next victims?

Darrell Henshaw, the paranormal-sensitive first introduced in Overbeck’s Blood on the Chesapeake returns in another intriguing mystery, Crimson At Cape May.

Henshaw, caught in a difficult and unfair personal situation, is confronted with an old wrong, possibly a crime. We see him struggle to cope with both intrigue and ghosts as he sets about solving a missing-person case that might reveal a crime.

Henshaw’s character is immediately interesting, and his surroundings are so well described that the story is for me, completely believable. I fear that fans of mysteries might shy from picking up a book with that one word attached: paranormal. Yet, this mystery-lover was completely engaged by the intrigue and I suspect that fans of the paranormal will be entirely satisfied with this tale, as well.

Weirdly enough, it is some of the secondary characters, (especially those who seem to hate Henshaw) who help create a very ‘real’ environment. Oh, sure… the friends, Sara, Al, and Cassie are all important and it seems nothing speaks truer than hate, blame, and rage. And, of course, Henshaw hears how ruthless townfolk believe he is. And what the love of his life thinks of him… no giveaways here, but know: Emotions stomp their way out of this one!

Of course, there is something of a romance in this one, but the main story here is everything. Crimson at Cape May delivers an unpredictable mystery along with a powerful look at people, too.
