What really made Tilly mad and sorrowful is seeing the situation between Burma and her fiancée. This is a great example of how every woman is treated the same no matter their cast in life.

There are three different relationships going on at the same time, each one showing an example of how each circumstances and personalities can affect a relationship. The first couple is Tilly and Ryan. Their relationship is incredibly strong, both of them finding love in each other’s arms. They are not embarrassed to show the world how they feel.

The second relationship is Fliss and Saul, who is a bellhop at the hotel. They are not allowed to show their wedding rings or their feelings. Then there is the third relationship between Burma Evans, a rich socialite who has plans to marry Frederic Vanderoosten, a handsome young man who is full of charm until he gets what he wants.

I really enjoyed this book because of the wonderful characters and the wonders of the environment and the culture. It’s enjoyable being able to see the different relationships and knowing that each one has its own problems but the way each one supports the other will determine how things will turn out. If you enjoy a sweet romance book this is a great book for you.

I was pleasantly surprised by the dialogue. It felt much more modern than I would have originally assumed it would. While it was unusual to see characters using twenty-first century slang in the past at first, somehow this stylistic choice suited them perfectly. The past and the present were so jumbled up together anyway in the various scenes that it did make sense for everyone to use the same sort of modern phrases.

The time jumps were confusing to me. It took a while to understand what was going on in them and why the audience was suddenly being introduced to a new cast of characters. I would have preferred to have smoother transitions between them as well as for the narrator to explain more clearly what was going on. It wasn’t until the story was nearly finished that I began to piece together how everything was connected. Even now, I’m not entirely sure I got it right despite the fact that the writing itself was quite pretty.

One of the things I liked the most about this tale was how open to interpretation it is. Just like when a group of people admire the same painting, not everyone is going to understand this storyline in an identical way. Once I figured out that this seemed to be what he was saying, I enjoyed the process of figuring out what the characters meant to me and how I’d interpret the things they said and did.

Things change quickly for Abby and the rest of the world on a summer night where everyone is celebrating an important holiday. Each of the cultures of the different countries of the realm are extremely well done. The author’s skill in world-building brings me into the environment like I was there. Standing in the pastures of the horses, the cold and snowy beauty of the Mountain and the heat of the desert. Also, each country has a different culture, with their own values and greetings. Abby had been in most of the cultures during her studies, which made the gathering of an army and the objects easier then it could have been.

Abby does manage to shoulder the burdens placed against her will with aplomb most of the times. Her love for queen and country is a driving force for her.

I believe the trope is a bit overdone. There many books where a female character goes on a quest to save lives. If there had been a twist, I would have enjoyed the book more. The characters are well developed even though Abby does seem to go out of character at times. This has the unfortunate ability to bring me out of the story. I can see what the author is doing, trying to show Abby’s development from a child to a strong woman. Joshua is a wonderful character who balances her. He is a steadying influence and the author made a great choice by making him a healer. His personality is suited to it, as he doesn’t panic in emergencies.

The battle between good and evil was too quickly done. With all the lead up I would have thought the battle would have gone on longer. There were only a few pages of the battle and the end somewhat predictable. Although the after battle action was much better.

This was a light novel with periods of suspense and intriguing characters. The scenery is well done and Abby’s growth as a person and her relationship with Joshua is the main focus. I hope to read more about this world.

One of the things I appreciate the most about Mr. Frankel’s writing is how his tales discuss characters who have physical or mental health problems that impact what they’re able to do. He has always written those scenes with a strong sense of compassion, and this book continued that trend. The best parts of it to me were the ones that showed how Jake dealt with his disabilities. He had more than one diagnosis, and all of his diagnoses affected him every day in ways that I couldn’t have guessed ahead of time. This is one of the many reasons why I enjoy this author’s work so much and why I continue recommending it to everyone I know who reads the young adult genre.

Not only was there a great deal of character development for Jake, the ways he changed as a person made perfect sense. No one can roam the Internet without learning and growing in some way, especially when all of their senses are telling them that everything they’re seeing, touching, and hearing is as real as our world. The only slight adjustment I would have made to this part of the plot would be to do a little bit more with Miranda’s character development as well. She did change, too, but I would have loved to see a few more scenes showing how her relationship with Jake had an influence on this. With that being said, this was something I barely noticed. I still had a fantastic time following their adventures.

The world building was spectacular. I especially enjoyed seeing what happened to Jake after he entered the Internet. How the human mind might adapt to such an experience is something I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about, and I was fascinated by the way Jake’s mind adapted to a digital world. There were a few plot twists concerning this that made me grin. They couldn’t have been written better, although I’ll leave it up to all of you to figure out what they were for yourselves.

Cyber Sprite was a wonderful tale I’d recommend to anyone who has ever had a problem that they know will be permanent.

We learn more about Sundown and her brother Webb, but this installment is Sundown’s chance to shine. She is a great character and really grows during her time in this story.

Sundown was pulled from a battle in the last book, trying to save her brother, but something went terribly wrong. Sundown woke up…in the past. What happens there is fascinating. She discovers an awesome new talent and more hidden inner strength. She meets with the ruling council but cannot tell them what she knows about the future. Here, she meets younger versions of some of the people she knew in her present (in this afterworld). Readers are treated to the inside scoop of some of those interesting characters. They add a lot to the story, and there are some very touching moments, especially with a new, young character. Different types of relationships are explored in this story, adding depth. There are moments of exquisite happiness and others that are heartbreaking. The good and the bad alike have well-written backstories.

The tension escalates throughout the novel to an explosive end (cliff-hanger). Important people are lost in this book, but underneath this sadness, readers will wonder what actually became of them. Hopefully the next book will answer that important question, as it gives a sense of hope that maybe all is not lost for them.

There are some intriguing turns of fate and paradoxes, and the world-building, like in the previous books, is done by the hand of an artist. The author does a great job revealing things little-by-little while at the same time increasing the suspense of the story. It is clearly written, even with the complications time travel can bring. Symbolism is done well and really paints a picture, adding to the somber mood. Dialogue is realistic. This is a great third part to the series, and I look forward to the conclusion. I recommend this book.

The stories of Valencia and Mrs. Valentine may at first appear to have nothing in common…but then again, nothing in life is as straightforward as it seems.

I decided to read this story based on the blurb. It sounded interesting and I thought it might be fun. Well, Valencia and Valentine was absolutely interesting but fun wouldn’t be my word choice. It was a story that spoke to the heart in a way that was unconventional and surprising. There were so many times I expected Valencia and Mrs. Valentine to meet. In the end, they did, but not in any way I could have guessed or imagined or predicted.

There were times during reading where I wanted to skim or skip some paragraphs or pages because I didn’t think the plot was moving fast enough. My advice, slow down, take it in, and keep on keeping on. I ended up doing that because I discovered there was this intangible sense, a knowing that I was heading for a revelation that I couldn’t fathom but I wanted to get to. I needed every little clue to understand.

The author wrote in such a profound and effective manner about Valencia and how OCD affected her life, it made my heart ache. It gave me insight into those whose lives are dogged by the specter of revolving doubts, questions, panic attacks, worries and the ever-present ‘what-if?’ – if they did or didn’t do something, would it cause harm? Then there’s the guilt that comes from the imagining and then the questions, is it really imagination or is it real? I can’t visualize feeling that way all day, every day, yet the author clearly showed me though the heroine’s point of view just how challenging and hard a life can be when dealing with OCD. It was an eye-opener.

The reason I didn’t give this novel five stars was because I did get the feeling like I wanted to skim through parts, to hurry up and get to where the good stuff I believed should be. The kick of it is, I needed all those reminisces from Mrs. Valentine, I needed to read about Peter’s interaction with Valencia and how she tried to like him back – I needed to understand these two ladies which meant I needed to not rush things and let the author guide me to where she wanted me to go.

Because I eventually became so invested in their stories, when I came upon the scenes about the plane ride, I turned into a water faucet. It came upon me so suddenly – the knowledge of what I had been actually reading and what it meant and I cried and sniffled and used many tissues. My heart broke, and yet, there was a nostalgic love and gentleness, and a bittersweet happiness woven into the wrap-up. Even with that little bit of brightness, as I type this, I’m tearing up all over again. My heart was engaged at a much deeper depth than I believed it could be and I credit my emotional response to the care and expertise of Ms. Krause’s writing.

Valencia and Valentine is a difficult book to describe because anything I think to say doesn’t seem to do it justice. It’s not my usual type of book and yet, I feel better for having read it. In my own life, I want to be more like Grace. She was a great secondary character and a wonderful ally for Valencia to have. Readers who enjoy books with serious substance shared with love, character driven plots and protagonists who are brought to life before your very eyes, should definitely consider reading this novel.

This book was a fascinating read. What first grabbed my attention was Emma Lee’s encounter with a Santa. From what was described, I think she should have died. Instead, she came out of the encounter with a new ability, a talent that won’t be denied. Her gift makes her come across as daffy but Emma Lee is anything but.

A Ghostly Undertaking is definitely a cozy mystery with a little bit of romance thrown in that kept this romance reader happy. I did a mental happy dance at the moment where the ‘sweet’ heat happens. I don’t mind that the romance is only background to the solving of the mystery. The fact that it’s there made reading about Jack Henry and Emma Lee much more rounded, interesting, and engendered a soft sentiment to an otherwise very serious situation.

One of the elements that made this novel fun to read was the relationships between the townspeople and the humor surrounding them. Everyone had quirks and Ms. Kappes created characters who, by virtue of their individual idiosyncrasies, contributed to the flavor of this very small town called Sleepy Hollow.

The twists and turns of the investigation kept me guessing. I fell for the red herrings the author threw in because they not only made sense to the heroine, but they seemed logical to me too. I was intrigued with the different interpretations from the points of view of both the sheriff, Jack Henry, and Emma Lee. She gathered clues using her new ‘talent’ and he used the tried and true investigative techniques of law enforcement. Between the two of them, the puzzle pieces are discovered but what amazed me even more is how both interpreted them as a whole. One thing that was not discovered or explored is why in the world Jack Henry accepted Emma Lee’s ability so easily? He was surprisingly lackadaisical about it, and he didn’t seem surprised one iota with her revelation about Ruthie. Why is that? I hope to someday find out.

The solving of who-done-it was exciting and clever but the best thing? I didn’t even have a clue. So many secrets abounded in Emma Lee’s home town and the end of the novel teased me with one more. It’s a good thing there are already multiple books in the series, because I don’t have to wait to read the next one like early fans did. I can’t wait to find out about the chicken.

If you haven’t discovered the Ghostly Southern Mystery series yet, you’re in for a treat. A Ghostly Undertaking is a book with a clever hook and I’m happily caught.

She quickly learns that some of them aren’t that needy while others have family willing to help out. Both her her roommate want to help the homeless as much as possible with food and water. During her first day of handing out sandwiches to the homeless with her partner Cory on their assigned area on Homestead Street. What she didn’t expect was how pag hard it would be not to become overwhelmed with the thoughts of the homeless. This shows how much compassion she feels for the less fortunate by still helping every week. Her psychic gifts start to come back to her with a vengeance.

On the second trip she ‘hears’ a voice that sounded like he hates women, although she cannot be sure if it means anything. When she learns later that there is a serial killer on the loose and he seems to be going after women of the streets she realized that she may have heard the killer.

Sebastian always seem to be where Emily is just to make sure that she is all right. It was sweet watching him worm himself into her heart one step at a time. He makes sure that she is safe as possible by driving her home when he can and giving her his jeep to drive wherever she needs to go. She tries to let him know that she doesn’t need it as she has learned self-defense, but when she sees how worried and stressed he is, she gives in.

The love they experience helps them both cope with the stress and horror of the killer. They support each other and one of my favorite scenes is when Sebastion comes to her apartment exhausted and drained. There had been another murder and he needed the comfort she could provide.

Their relationship is kept on the sweet side, with gentle kisses and cuddling. She also had to struggle with what she wanted with her life when the case is solved: should she go back to her former job and leave him behind or stay in Oklahoma City and see what happened with their relationship.

This was a sweet, exciting book I completely enjoyed reading.

I chose this book to read because it was on a list supplied by my local book club. I’m glad I picked it. The writing is clean and crisp. I was sucked right into the story.

Noelle is clearly a good person, but she’s been through some rough times—her mother passed and she’s not wild about Christmas because of it. I get that. The holidays can be tough and a gray time of year. The author did a great job showing that swing in emotions.

One thing that drove me a tiny bit nuts was Noelle’s tendency to be ditzy. Like she was going through the motions. Now, I get it. She’s absorbed in her life and she’s caught up with trying to survive since the passing of her mother. But there were times I wasn’t sure how old she was—she seemed young at times, then older and unobservant other times.

That said, this was a cute book. It’s short, so it’s a good afternoon read. I read this for escapism and it was perfect. There is holiday spirit, a twinge of romance, learning, growing and shoes!! Can’t beat that!

Not that long ago I read a blog somewhere about how nice it would be to cast an unlikely heroine. You know, a non-stereotypical leading lady. One that wasn’t the usual trope of being pudgy. I wasn’t sure what the blog was looking for but I think I found it.

Calliope, the heroine, was extraordinary and I’m not one bit surprised that Anna J. Stewart was the one to pull it off. I’ve read stories by her in the past and loved each and every one. I am late to the boat in discovering the Butterfly Harbor Series as Holiday Kisses is book five. I haven’t read the first four books but I wish I had. Apparently Calliope’s story was long awaited for by readers who are following this series. I can say that Holiday Kisses can be read as a standalone but it’s clear that my enjoyment would have been even better if I had read the previous books.

Xander, the hero, was wonderfully matched with Calliope’s character. Together they made a heartwarming story. I enjoyed reading the process of how they came to a mutual compromise regarding their difference of opinions over important matters. Together, they are unstoppable.

I recommend this book if you are looking for a unique heroine such as Calliope. She was refreshing and intriguing. Xander couldn’t resist her charm and neither could I. Also, If you love butterflies then this is a must read.
