Bronwen reads a fairytale to the children under her care that holds parallels to what is happening in her life. She has an old friend from her past, the handsome Nick, that she runs into in the park. There are dashes of humor that inspire smiles. Nick is now living in a different world then Bronwen. Should she dare hope anyway? And what about Miss Mayhew? The author does some clever maneuvering to give these ladies their happy endings.

Snow Broth is the winter story of Marjorie, who makes new friends in an interesting and unexpected way. She falls for one in the group then discovers he’s engaged to another of her new friends. She is a young lady with old-fashioned morals, from the country, and is intrigued with her city friends, until they do something to offend her sense of right and wrong. Marjorie, due to her morality, fights her feelings for Beau, a promised man. The ending of this tale offers a surprise, and the tender emotions are written by the hand of an expert.

A Love for All Seasons is a great way to tie up the loose ends while adding new insights into the love of an established couple. The author has created a story that captivated me from the first page. The writing flowed well and I had to know what would happen next. I also got emotionally invested in Charlotte, Liza and Lydia. I liked them, even when I wanted to shout, don’t eat that paint!

The characters of Lydia, Liza and Charlotte were well-planned and made the most of the situation the Radium Girls went through–they tipped their brushes to paint watch dials with paint that glowed in the dark. They also painted their jewelry, painted their teeth and as a bi-product, ate the paint. I liked these characters and would’ve loved to have read more about them.

Julie, the modern day character, had her issues. Now, she’s a young adult who didn’t get the chance to go to college because she got her mother’s house out of foreclosure. So, yes, she’s got some issues. She’s a older teen, she’s the bread-winner in the family and she has some communication issues common with teens – she thinks everyone knows what she means and she knows everything. The author created the character in an interesting manner, but there were a few things that happened to her that seemed a bit cliche.

Still, I liked this book, and while I don’t read much YA, I recommend this one. Give it a try.

I’m often not a fan of the “strange events” type of stories. I usually like my stories to make sense, or be thoroughly explained so I don’t need to doubt or wonder what’s going on. That’s why I was both surprised and quite delighted at just how much I enjoyed this story. A fair bit of the first half is not clearly explained – there’s plenty of suggestion and as the reader I could make a few educated guesses as to what was really going on. And while usually this sort of haziness drives me nuts I found that the author wrote Alex (and Joe, too) to be interesting enough to carry me along through the doubts and after even just a few pages I desperately wanted to know what, exactly, was going on. In this aspect, I found the writing to be phenomenal.

Readers who enjoy just a very small amount of creepiness (along the lines of ghosts, spirits or haunting) but don’t want anything so strong that they can’t read it alone or at night should be as delighted with this story as I was. This isn’t a mystery story in the traditional sense – no real “who done it” or even crime/problem as such, but I definitely felt there was a strong element of suspense in the story and a mystery in the sense of Alex trying to work out exactly what was going on – both past and present – with Joe and the situation they found themselves in. My only very slight disappointment is that I didn’t feel there was a clear – or properly rational – explanation for the way the story ended. It’s happy and I was satisfied where Alex and Joe were left in a romantic/relationship sense, but I feel I would have been more satisfied if a bit more time had been spent explaining how things came to turn out like they did.

If readers are looking for a romantic story this might not hit the right spot for them. I enjoyed the chemistry and attraction between the two men finding it sweet and nostalgic how they shared a few steamy kisses but not any stronger intimacy. The emotions and growing attachment between Alex and Joe were very satisfying and I felt this should help appeal to readers who like a bit of romance in their stories but don’t want anything too heavy or intimate.

A good and solid read, I enjoyed this story a lot and will happily try other stories by this author.

The arc of the romantic plot line was perfect. I adored the chemistry between Darcy and Grey. They had so much in common that I immediately knew I wanted them to remain in each other’s lives either as friends or a couple. As they got to know each other better, I became even more convinced that they’d make the perfect match. Not only did they share the same hobbies, they had the same values as well. That is, they were both far more interested in quietly doing the right thing no matter who noticed than in getting credit for it. Their strong senses of integrity were well matched and also made me love both of these characters even more than I did when I first met them.

Darcy was such a relatable and interesting protagonist. Most high school students don’t need to worry about helping their moms pay rent or keep food on the table. As tough as these added responsibilities made her life, they also shaped her into a hard-working and trustworthy young woman. She took life seriously in a good way. When she did have opportunities to relax, she dove into those experiences with joy. I wanted her to finally get a happy ending after everything she’d been through.

I was also impressed with how sensitively and honestly Ms. Ouimet handled Quinn’s substance abuse. He was Darcy’s only sibling, their family was low income, and they honestly didn’t have much of a social safety net at all. All of these things made an already difficult situation even harder to cope with. There was simply not enough time, emotional support, or money to deal with all of the negative consequences of his addiction. I’ll admit to blinking back tears a few times while I read this story because of how much empathy I had for this family. They were facing awful circumstances, and the author did an amazing job of showing how Quinn’s choices affected not only his own life but the lives of his mother and sister.

(Not Quite) the Same Old Song is a must-read for anyone who has ever had personal experience with substance abuse or who wonders what it feels like to love someone who is in such a self-destructive cycle.

I found this to be an interesting, almost “confessions of” style of story. Told in the first person I enjoyed really getting to know Layla and understand exactly where she was coming from. I also was surprised but really intrigued when I found that Layla did a few things that weren’t very heroine-ish but were completely relatable and realistic. Things like snapping at her customers and mis-reading the signals Raymond gave her. Raymond and Layla’s relationship didn’t get off to a smooth, customary romance-book-style beginning and while this didn’t endear Layla to me, it really did capture my attention. Partly because it made this a story unlike the usual ones I read, but also because I found it completely relatable. Friendships and relationships don’t always start off being picture-perfect and smooth and we do say silly things and make mistakes sometimes. While it’s not often described in romance stories it did resonate with me and make the whole tale feel more like real-life.

I was pleased when Darryl and Lucas – Layla’s two friends and co-workers – didn’t hold back with a few hard truths after Layla shot Raymond down in flames. I feel it could have been easy for the author to have written that scene a different way. I really felt that having Darryl and Lucas both stand up to Layla and not sugar-coat their view of her poor behavior was some excellent and strong writing. Personally, I didn’t like Layla’s attitude – though when she explained why she felt the way she did I understood – and it was an unusual feeling for me to not like and sympathise with the heroine to a story. At times this was not a comfortable read, and while I can appreciate it, I strongly feel this book won’t be for all readers. I’d personally put it into one of those “I’m in a certain mood” style of books. I do have to give the author kudos for writing some realistic and unflattering aspects into the main character in Layla.

Readers who enjoy realistic characters – flaws and all – and romances that don’t progress smoothly but have misunderstandings and difficulties should find this sweet short story relatable, logical and very true to life. I feel if you’re looking for a soft, warm and fuzzy style of romance this story won’t suit your tastes, but with multi-dimensional, realistic and interesting characters, a solid plotline and plenty of reality this should be a good read for many people.

Some of my favorite parts of this book involved Meddy’s reaction to modern life. So much had changed in the world over the last few thousand years since her glory days. She was surprised by everything from the food to the fashion of the modern day, and I was fascinated by her adjustment to our era. There were certain things she noticed that I never would have assumed would be an issue, and other changes I assumed she would struggle with turned out to be no big deal at all. This was all thought out very nicely, and I appreciated how much effort Mr. Frankel put into it.

The pacing was perfect. I’d originally assumed it would be a little slow in the beginning as Meddy explained what she’d done to anger the gods, but the plot quickly jumped into showing what happened when she was given a temporary pardon from her sentence instead. While these details were given all of the attention they needed later on, I loved the fact that the audience got to move on to main storyline so quickly in this tale. That really kept my interest levels high beginning with the first page and going on through to the final one.

Meddy’s character development was handled wonderfully. She was always someone I sympathized with, but I only grew to like her even more as I got to know the parts of her personality that weren’t immediately noticeable. Yes, she had her fair share of flaws, but she also had a genuinely kind heart and a willingness to learn from her past. Those are always lovely things to discover about a character, especially when they’re followed by genuine personal growth.

What the Gods Allow was a stellar addition to J.S. Frankel’s long list of works. Whether you’re a new or longterm fan of his stories, I highly recommend checking this one out!

I wasn’t sure what I was in for when I picked up this book. First, it’s short. I knew that. But there’s more than a short story here. There’s a pretty significant plot. The characters are broken and need redemption. I liked that about the story.

The relationship between Lucia and Ronan is interesting and contentious. In such a short story, there are a lot of characters and these two needed to stand out. They do, but at times it was hard to keep everyone straight. I liked the chemistry between Ronan and Lucia and look forward to more for these two.

If you want a book chock full of backstory and perfect for a sequel, then this might be the short story for you.

I felt like they loved each other very much but had somewhat lost touch with each other over the course of almost fifteen years of being together.

Readers looking for a happy or blissful story probably won’t find that here. While realistic and understandable, I felt the ending wasn’t what I was expecting from a romance novel. Similarly there was no “romance” aspect really to my mind. While Kim and Christopher were a solid and well-established couple, I felt this story focused more on their relationship and expectations – rather than any chemistry or romance as such between them. I’m not sure this style of story will appeal to readers looking for something more romantic or gentler. I have to admit though, I found it very fresh and interesting to see how Kim and Christopher compromised and worked through the bump in their marriage. It was a good reminder that sometimes couples have to make hard sacrifices when things get tough.

Short and a bittersweet reminder of how not all romances are fairy tales – I found this to be a good short story.

Readers are continually offered doses of hope though, and when individual characters are pushed to the limit, they act in amazing ways. The suspense is great. How is this going to end? Will they all die heroes for the greater cause?

Subplots involve relationships, and people must act unselfishly at times. Also, they must be creative problem solvers. This is escapist literature, but it has underlying messages as well and causes one to think about certain things. Their dialogue is revealing. The writing, as in the other books of the series, is descriptive and straightforward. The world-building is exceptional. An atmosphere of falling darkness, of threat, paints a vivid picture and brings out the bold in the characters.

I have read the other three books in this series and was greatly looking forward to this last book. It was not a disappointment.

This is a sweet romance set in Monaco, during the whirlwind courtship of Princess Grace and Prince Ranier. The author had me at the prince and princess. But once I got into the story, I couldn’t put it down. I liked the characters and the story. Talk about getting swept away.

Sophie is an independent girl. She isn’t afraid to stand up for herself and also not afraid to fall in love. I liked how she didn’t just fall for James. She made him work for it. That’s wonderful. She’s very contemporary in a time where women weren’t as forthright. So it was refreshing to read her story.

James… I liked how he was drawn to Sophie. I like when the hero can stand up to and beside the heroine. I also liked how he was so smitten with her. He and Sophie are a good couple and I rooted for them.

I also liked how the story of Grace and Rainier were woven in. I felt like I was right there in Cannes and along on the junket with them. It’s a fanciful story.

If you want something that’s got a lot to make you think about, then this might not be the book you want. It’s not heavy. For me, that was perfect. I wanted a breezy read. I got it.

If you want a book that’s sweet, has a satisfying ending and will leave you wanting a bit more, then this is the beach read you need.
