I have read the first in this series and found James Hartwell to be a typical navy captain of the nineteenth century. However the twist of being in love with a robot adds an extra dimension to the historical era. Lady Mechatronic is delightful. She struggles to understand the human words as their meanings are not always what they seem. The poor female also struggles with unexpected emotions as she finds herself jealous of James’ attention to another woman.

A good continuation of this series, each book giving a fresh outlook on the century and the problems affecting in the main characters. I keep reading more of these books as I’m longing to know how the captain and the lady resolve their seemingly impossible love tangle.

In A Regency Christmas Collection, the reader is treated to three stories of the period, each with independent story lines and characters. The one thing that flows through each small adventure is the simple joy of tradition and a sprig of mistletoe to make things merry and bright.

The first story is “The Duke’s Christmas Gift.” Waiting for the birth of her child, the Duchess wanders out into the snow and finds herself in a pickle. Her love for her husband is a restrained affair common to the time, but rife with affection. Her time falls upon her unexpected and she is thrust into the rigor of a difficult birth. When unforeseen tragedy befalls the event, the Duke finds himself fraught with unimaginable worry. The author does a wonderful job of illustrating this point as the story shifts from the Duchess to the Duke and the surprise ending that will be a bittersweet Christmas blessing for everyone involved.

The second story is “A Castle Cramlye Christmas.” This tale is set in the crumbling walls of an old family castle, complete with hidden rooms and secret spaces. When a group of young people converge on the dowager for the holidays, traditions are brought to life, old loves revisited and some new loves are found. It was a merry romp that lead the reader through the countryside and back into the passages of the aging castle for some holiday cheer and a bit of holly and ivy.

The third and most elaborate of the stories is “Pongo Guthridge Finds Love.” This story is a bit of mystery, a whole lot of intrigue. Love, lust, friendships and surprise romance all wind their way together for a very orange flavored holiday story. Pongo is a gentleman with a flair for the unusual; namely he has a penchant for dressing in orange. As the plot unfolds, a secret society is plaguing the town and a wealthy man is using his influence to make a great many people unhappy. Using his naturally devious and enchanting talents, Pongo sets about to make things right, at the same time finding out that the woman of his dreams might be someone unexpected.

This collection of stories was a merry ride through a traditional holiday season. The characters within are all memorable. The Duke and Duchess in the first story had tears sparkling in my eyes as their very own Christmas miracle comes to pass. The merriment of Lark and the other young people in the group visiting her Lady-Gran at Castle Cramlye was catching, although part way through the story, I found myself wondering where it was leading. The third story was the most detailed of the three and the most outrageous. Pongo is a fop, dreaming of his lady love. He thinks he knows who it is, but is delighted to find out that he was mistaken. Politics and machinations pervade the story, giving a multi-threaded plot formation that was sheer delight. I will never again think of the color orange the same way.

These two characters are very real, believable people who have been through traumas of heart-wrenching proportions. Yet, each is finding a path back to life, a real life rather than one filled with bitterness and pain. And I suspect, that even without all the suspense, over time, they would have developed a friendship.

The kidnapping along with other acts of violence against the research institute heightens the tensions and certainly Van and David’s very survival is at stake. I liked the way they work together as a team, each figuring out a part of the puzzle that they need. Most of the secondary characters are also fully fleshed out, lending support to Van and David. The main villain is pretty flat, but then that actually works to raise the level of suspense simply because he is such a loose cannon. The settings are described in great detail so that I feel as if I have actually been to Doubtful Sound. Everything in this novel works together so that I found that I couldn’t put it down, reading it in one afternoon.

Readers who like romantic suspense stories are sure to fall in love with Doubtful. I know I did.

Working through their personal issues, and with friends and family urging them to open themselves more to the spiritual side of human nature, and have faith and trust in God more, there is a lot going on in this story. Full of fun antics, heartwarming friendship and complicated relationships this is a fast-paced novel that draws you in and held my attention throughout. I also got a bit of a kick out of the “friends without benefits” line they tried to describe their burgeoning relationship as it was different to so many other novels out there.

While Christianity and God are a heavy influence in this book, it’s not the sole driving force behind the plot. Instead, it’s woven quite skillfully throughout the story, instead of being Bible-bashed or hammered into the reader. I found this far more realistic, and more of a pleasure to read than other Christian inspirational books. Church, God, spirituality and Christian beliefs are a strong theme, especially relating to love, marriage and trust – but it’s worked well into the characters, their interactions and their friends giving advice. I found this still managed to give a strong impression, but not drive the whole story. I thought this left the characters and plot far more room to shine and grow, and quite enjoyed this style of story telling.

Conversely quite a bit of the story is dedicated to misunderstandings between Cole and Christie. While this was a bit more clichéd and predictable, there were enough surprises and fresh, different aspects that it didn’t overshadow the story or detract much from my enjoyment. One of the most notable surprises was a particular scene where Cole and Christie go on their first date, and Cole tells Christie about his experiences in Iraq. While not graphic or gore-filled, I personally found them a challenging read – and certainly something totally different for a romance novel. I think the author had a lot of guts adding this into the book. To my mind it adds an extra layer of reality to the character of Cole, an ex-solider, but also was something quite unexpected. While the mis-communications were a little clichéd, they were totally offset by some of the stronger details of soldiers getting used to civilian life after war, the realities of facing death from sickness (cancer), and learning to overcome hurt in the past and betrayal by family, lovers and other people important in our lives. This certainly isn’t your average Christian romance book, that’s for sure.

An interesting blend of classic, sweet and military – I feel certain this will appeal to a wide range of readers. There is no graphic sex, and indeed nothing stronger than a few kisses between Cole and Christie. I found this sweet enough to let mature teenagers read or to loan to your mum or granny. This is still undoubtedly a romance and filled with a strong, interesting cast of secondary characters and a vibrant moral/Christian themed basis. I think there’s also plenty of reality and enough adventures to interest a broad range of tastes. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would happily read more by this author.

It made it a quick, enjoyable read (even at 400+ pages), but it also took a way a bit from the character development. I would have enjoyed getting to know the characters a bit better–on a deeper level.

The book is told in Kalin’s first person POV, so he’s the one we get to know the most. I enjoyed him–even if at times I thought he was too hard on Shane. The banter back and forth between them was amusing–and I really liked getting to know the other characters in the book, especially Samu. I could just see him rolling his eyes at Kalin and Shane’s antics.

I’ve heard there are more books in the series to come– will be interesting to see what new developments there are for this group.

Despite the odd way Alex and Royce met, their relationship felt very natural. There were a few awkward moments in the beginning that stemmed from Alex’s trust issues. However, it wasn’t long before their common faith in God, and Royce’s patience and gentle manner won her over. When Alex and Royce are together, it just seems right. I couldn’t help but smile as I watched them inch their way to a happy ending.

Alex is definitely the focus of this book, and as much as I liked getting to know her, I do wish some of the secondary characters had been more rounded. A few characters, like Royce’s son and Alex’s coworkers, had potential, but they never really grew beyond being types. Consequently, they didn’t seem as real to me as Alex.

Ms. Patrick did an excellent job building suspense around the serial killer stalking Alex. The sections of the story that focused on the killer gave me goose bumps, but weren’t overly graphic. I was on the edge of my seat wondering how close the murderer was to Alex and when he would make his final move.

Overall, I enjoyed reading Out of the Darkness. It is a chilling, fast paced suspense laced with romance. Anyone looking for a quick and entertaining read should definitely give Out of the Darkness a try.

Ben and Daniel have experienced a lot of grief during their short lives, but neither one of them has any interest in feeling sorry for himself. It was rewarding to see how their positive outlooks influence their behaviour during the scariest scenes in the book. It was even better to tease out the personality differences between the two brothers. Being twins certainly doesn’t mean they have the same opinions about everything.

There were a few instances in which I wished more time was spent explaining the rules of the pirate world. The fast pace works really well for the majority of this novel, but it did make it difficult for the author to fully explain what was going on in certain scenes. Due to how it was plotted it wouldn’t have been easy to go back and describe these scenes in more detail later on.

I also had trouble determining if this tale is set in the past or present. Due to the social mores and types of technology present in Daniel and Ben’s life I believe it is set in roughly the mid-20th century, but it was never quite clear to me if this assumption is correct. From what I understand this is the beginning of a new series, so I hope that future books will cover this topic in greater detail.

With that being said, the high energy of the plot is contagious. The places Ben and Daniel visit and the people and creatures they meet are as colorful as they are unpredictable. This is a good choice for reluctant readers due to the wide variety of genres represented in it as well as the instant likability of the main characters.

Treasure of a Thousand Worlds is an intriguing introduction to the adventures of Ben and Daniel. I definitely recommend checking it out to anyone who loves exploring action-packed new worlds.

Life goes on for Rich but it will never be the same nor will life be the same for many of Eric friends because, in his own way, he had influenced each and every one of their lives with his exuberance for life.

Lou Aronica is a master story teller and reaches right in and touches one’s heart with the humanness of his characters. He stirs emotions and senses that bring tears and laughter while sadness for the hurts in the human experience almost overwhelm at times. I would have loved being able to see some of the scenes from some of the other characters’ points of view. I didn’t feel that I got to know them as well as I would have had I been able to know their thoughts and inner feelings.

Flash and Dazzle is a poignant story that lingers in the memory and makes one hope the characters that Eric left behind will find a rewarding, happy life as they continue the human experience; while Eric is getting one of his remarkable parties ready for them to enjoy when they come to share with him the next experience after the human experience. This is a thought provoking novel.

I finished this tale feeling as if I’d experienced a novella’s worth of character development because of how well Lara’s thoughts and reactions are woven into her flight.

Given everything I learned about the ship she is stationed on, the ending doesn’t quite seem to fit in with the scenes that precede it. While it wrapped up the main storyline it also prompted me to wonder why a decision that a particular character makes during it was not utilized much earlier on. In a novella information about why that was the best option for this particular situation could be subtly woven into ongoing conversation, but in a story of this length there wasn’t room for the plot development necessary to explain why that character made that choice.

Ms. Nix kept me on the edge of my seat. Every single sentence in this piece accentuates the rapidly building tension. What was even more surprising to me was how the brief flashes about Lara’s past and life outside of her occupation added to the suspense.

I’d recommend The Shuttle to anyone who enjoys military and hard science fiction. It’s a quick, rewarding read that I’m glad I picked up.
