Anyone in her position would need some time and space to clear their head. As Arabella’s flight from the house illustrates, she does tend to be a bit impulsive. After Arabella calmed down, I found her to be an intelligent and caring woman. The tender way she cares for her horse speaks volumes about her personality. Arabella does come off as a bit arrogant at times, but I think this is mainly a defense mechanism. Oliver’s behavior confuses her and her arrogance is an effort to put some distance between them as well as a way to dampen the small flames of desire she’s beginning to feel for him.

Taryn is one of the most interesting protagonists I’ve met so far this year. Her strengths and flaws reveal themselves early on in her adventures, and she definitely possesses quite a few of each. Sometimes her unrelenting stubbornness made me wish I could climb into the scene and persuade her to listen to other points of view, but her empathy and curiosity kept me rooting for her until the conclusion.

I did notice some grammatical errors in the text as I was reading. There were also a few instances in which the characters’ syntax was unusual. It was never quite clear to me if the author was writing a new type of dialect that was created by the large number of orphans in the plot whose education has been sparse to non-existent or if these oddly written sentences would have disappeared with another round of editing.

Strong, even pacing drew me back into the story. There is little room for sentimentality or nostalgia in this world because the characters are forced to spend so much of their time gathering supplies and outrunning the dead. This realistic look at what it would take to keep a small community functioning under such dangerous conditions when a large percentage of their members are young children and teenagers piqued my interest almost as much as the dilemmas Taryn and her makeshift family face.

The paranormal elements of this tale captured my attention immediately. It’s fairly rare for a zombie novel to include the types of phenomenon that the author inserts into the text, so I was curious to see how everything would tie together. I would have liked to see more time spent developing this subplot. It’s a unique twist, yet the amount of space it was given wasn’t quite enough to explain all of the questions I had in the beginning.

It took me a while to determine the most appropriate age recommendation. Taryn is a few months shy of 16 when the story begins, but her emotional response to her circumstances and her obsession with the horse make her come across as someone who is a few years younger than her chronological age. There is a genuinely innocent and naive side to this character that is often at odds with her surroundings, and it is because of these traits that this story is suitable for high school students of any age.

I’d recommend Horse of Wind and Shadows to anyone who would like to shift effortlessly between genres. This novel is equal parts young adult and science fiction with just enough horror thrown in to remind the reader that there are always zombies lurking beyond the perimeter.

Even after the engagement is ended, Edward and Jennifer’s paths cross often because their brothers are best friends who can’t manage to stay out of trouble and are rescued by Edward on more than one occasion. The more time that Edward and Jennifer spend together, the more obvious their affection for each other becomes. Unfortunately, Edward and Jennifer are the only ones incapable of recognizing how much in love they truly are.

Jennifer and Edward have great chemistry. When they relax and enjoy each other’s company, they are very fun to watch. I thoroughly enjoyed their teasing banter as well as their more tender moments. As the story progressed, I must admit that I became increasingly frustrated with Edward and Jennifer’s inability to be honest about their emotions. For the most part, nothing stood in the way of their happiness except themselves. They seemed bent on making excuses and misinterpretations of all sorts. Despite my frustration, Ms. Statham always left a glimmer of hope that Edward and Jennifer would find their way back to each other, which made it a bit easier for me to tolerate their behavior.

There are a few interesting side stories sprinkled throughout the book. Some had more bearing on the main plot than others, but they were all amusing. I must admit that I expected them to impact Edward and Jennifer’s future much more than they did, and I was a bit disappointed when they didn’t. However, the stories do serve to illustrate what a kind, loyal, and strong man Edward is.

The Portrait is a thoroughly entertaining read. Edward and Jennifer are very likable and their happy ending is sweet if a bit surprising. I definitely recommend it to fans of historical romance.

I must confess that reading Most Truly was my first venture in to reading a story that followed the beloved characters of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Furthermore, Kitty and Colonel Fitzwiliam aren’t characters that I spent a lot of time thinking about after reading Pride and Prejudice. However, after reading the blurb for Most Truly, my interest was piqued. I found myself wondering if Kitty found happiness like her older sisters.

I enjoyed getting to know Kitty a little better in this novella. My previous assessment of her wasn’t entirely favorable. However, I liked Ms. Williams’ interpretation of Kitty’s character. She is a sweet young woman with a great sense of fun and innocence about her. Kitty’s efforts to improve herself and form lasting and meaningful connections with the people around her are certainly commendable as well. By the time I finished reading, I found I’d be happy to call Kitty a friend.

I do think that the relationship between Kitty and Colonel Fitzwilliam progressed too quickly. I would have liked them to spend more time getting to know each other before falling completely in love. They have excellent chemistry, and I would have liked to explore that more.

There are a couple obstacles on the path to Kitty and Fitzwilliam’s happy ending, but they were resolved much too quickly. I would have liked the various conflicts to be teased out more. This would have added more suspense to the story. While I enjoyed how the tale concluded, I was left wanting a bit more depth.

I found Most Truly to be an entertaining read. Kitty is a breath of fresh air, and her story is a good book to curl up with on a rainy afternoon while waiting for spring to arrive. Anyone who likes their historical romance short and sweet should give Most Truly a try.

There’s a good plot revolving around the theft, Sandra’s pendant. Both Derrick and Alex are well drawn characters and Sandra is caught in the middle. An enormous stray dog – Viking – rounds out the main characters and I greatly enjoyed the book, laughing aloud in multiple places from all their antics. I found myself really invested in Sandra and Viking, and despite a rocky start with Alex also came to really like his character. The plot takes center stage in this book, and while there is romance, it’s very chaste and sweet (a few kisses only). I was a little disappointed in how quickly the plot was wrapped up at the end. It felt a little rushed to me, but all the loose ends were tied up so overall I have no real complaints.

For readers wanting a sweet, funny story this is a great place to start. The romance is soft enough I’d feel comfortable letting teenagers read it, or my grandmother. Funny and romantic with a prominent plot it’s a great, traditional romantic comedy. Recommended.

Road trips are supposed to provide a sense of adventure without actually exposing the people on them to any real harm. Unfortunately Jason and Levi’s trip isn’t exactly following that rule.

As interesting as all of the human characters are, by far my favourite character was Otanewainuku. I’d never heard any legends about the Taniwha before, and it was fascinating to imagine what it would be to meet one of them in person. They are a unique species that fit in well with the rest of the science fiction and paranormal elements of this book.

While Jason and Levi’s paranormal abilities are clearly described early on in their adventures, I would have liked to learn more about the origins of them. The handful of hints about where these powers might have come from are intriguing, but the story would have flowed more smoothly had the author taken the time to explain such an important part of their identities.

The well-paced, exciting plot made it hard for me to put this novella down. It has the kind of worldbuilding I’d expect from a full-length novel, but each chapter was so engrossing that I finished it within a few days. The plot-based narrative introduces background information as needed, and while there were times when I wished certain details were revealed a little sooner I soon learned to appreciate how the author brings up the most important facts in such a fast-paced story.

A Taste of Gold is rollicking adventure that is begging for a sequel. While I don’t know if the author is planning to revisit these characters, I highly recommend getting to know them in the meantime. This is a fun, short tale that this reader had a great time zipping through.

This is a story that can be read in one sitting. It is a story full of the ‘feel-good-factor’, and I make no apology for describing it as such.

This beautiful short story collection explores different layers of love, it starts with soft novel-like story of the journey of a Persian physician lady to Canada, and as it progresses its way to deeper more controversial levels of love, the stories move from poetic prose to philosophical abstract essays. That’s the author’s playful way of engaging both sides of your mind and triggering both your mind and emotions.

The connection between teachers and students is an unusual one because it is almost always confined to a fairly short amount of time. Yet the influence of a teacher, whether it’s positive or negative, can be observed for many years after the student leaves the classroom. The conflicting emotions this stirs up are explored in surprising detail, and for that reason it is what I would recommend other readers try first if they want to read these stories out of order.

It would have been helpful if I could have learned the name of each narrator. Background information was provided for many of them and that did make it easier to tell the difference between them. I was usually able to figure out their genders and some basic background information, but the same narrator seemed to be present in “Akram” and “Hunted”. It was never quite clear to me if the rest of the speakers were also supposed to be the same person or if the reader was meant to assume that each narrator is a new character in most cases.

Reading the introduction to this book is essential to understanding what happens later on in certain tales. It does not include spoilers, but it does explain terms that will be used frequently. It also gave me a taste of the tone and personality of this work. The author has a unique way of looking at the world, and I am glad that I had the opportunity to sample to her writing style before the stories began.

On the Silk Road to Love: A Fiction Book of Facts is a unique collection that I would recommend to anyone in the mood for highly creative speculative fiction.
