I felt as if both the main characters were my friends and I longed to be able to help them, especially when the nasty younger son had designs on Cecilia which didn’t include marriage. The setting was outside the debutante area of London and this made it more interesting for me as it provided a new aspect to the era. Charlotte Brentwood has provided a unique vision into small village life when the nobility ruled everything.

The minor characters’ manipulation and influence have Ross and Marcy struggling to find common ground. How they finally deal with all the conflicts and feeling is most satisfying.

“The Garden” by Jory Sherman, though set in the present, seems almost like a wrinkle in time.

Harvey and Ruth escape the hustle and bustle of city life. They move to a ninety acre country place where Osage Indians once lived. Harvey’s has a garden that he loves. What happens in it and how he reacts creates an eerie, intriguing story.

The touch of humor, the mystery and confrontation all add up to make this story a delightful, entertaining read.

2014 Summer Collection: Anthology Sweet/Sensual, while not my usual type of reading, was attention-keeping and a nice break from the usual.

Yet, both rise above their flaws to survive in the desperate time of war when deprivation is almost unbearable, racial hatred runs amok, and unspeakable atrocities occur. Trust vanishes and the German occupation forces move in, seeking to totally dominate the French people.

Viann and Isabelle, one operating underground and the other operating in plain sight, go quietly about their secret doings. At times, the reader’s senses are reeling with descriptions of atrocities in the villages and towns, but a near sensory overload comes when conditions in the concentrations camps roars to life with the remarkable descriptions Ms. Hannah writes.

However, the daily living is also beautifully revealed that makes the reader smile at the happy times and cry when the devastation comes. How the people survive as the months and years bring more and more deprivation and persecution makes one aware of both the strength and the fragility in each human being.

THE NIGHTINGALE has a multitude of characters (so many that need special recognition), along with clandestine operations that all play important roles in how the French never really give up, but held on until the Allies arrived.

The story ends back in present time with a twist that made me cry, even though it reveals a love so precious.

This is a novel I highly recommend. It is rich with descriptions like: “Roses tumbled like laughter along the ancient stone wall.” “She wanted to bottle how safe she felt in this moment, so she could drink of it later when loneliness and fear left her parched.” “The street was a living breathing dragon of humanity.” It immerses the reader in the horrors of war and how ordinary people, even with their many flaws, become extraordinary. It is beautifully written and memorable!

I have to admit that I wasn’t quite sure what to make of Anne and Pete at first. It was clear from the start that Pete was attracted to Anne, but I wasn’t sure how she felt until much later. I do wish there had been more interaction between them. While I knew how Pete felt, it was hard to get a real sense of their chemistry because they didn’t spend much time together. In fact, Anne seemed intent on avoiding Pete because of something painful in their shared past. Despite this issue, I did enjoy watching the town of Legend work its magic on this reluctant couple.

Ms. Scott did an excellent job at slowly revealing the past connection between Anne and Pete. Anne’s past is certainly painful, but as I read, it became clear that there was much more to it then I first realized. Ms. Scott left a trail of clues that seemed to point in a heartbreaking direction, but the situation wasn’t quite what it seemed. The conclusion was very surprising and even a little refreshing. I no doubt that Anne will now be able to fully heal and open her heart to new possibilities.

I enjoyed reading Second Chances. Anyone looking for a fast yet heartwarming romance should give Second Chances a try.

The dialogue in this tale was so much fun. Unicorns see the world in ways that humans can barely even imagine. These differences showed up almost immediately, and they brought a smile to my lips on more than one occasion. The unicorn actually turned out to be my favorite character of all in this book due to all of the zany things that tend to happen to people who meet them. Discussing specific examples of what happened would lead this review too far into spoiler territory, but suffice it to say that anything can and does happen when one of these creatures shows up!

I would have liked to see more character development. Maira was a fascinating protagonist whose physical features were described in detail, but I had trouble picking up on what kind of personality she has. Knowing if she’s generally shy, gregarious, talkative, or something else entirely would have made it really easy for me to give this story a much higher rating.

There’s something to be said for falling in love with a good friend. The romance in this piece was just as prominent as the science fiction themes, but neither genre ever overpowered the other one. What made it even more interesting, though, were the positive messages sprinkled throughout the plot. I wasn’t expecting them, but they worked quite well with all of the other themes.

Love Rampage is a good choice for anyone who likes romantic science fiction.

This was a book that kept my interest through out. The characters were good hearted and a pleasure to read about. They had lucrative careers but found pleasure in volunteering in helping raise money for charity in putting on their annual haunted forest.

Joey’s soul can’t rest until his wife finds happiness; this brings about his proposition to Reese. The guy that Emily is dating is up to no good, so Joey calls in Reese, who happens to have broken Emily’s heart many years ago, to scare away the new guy. With a twist of his arm Reese finally accepts and agrees to help Joey. A question I asked while reading the book was: is Joey able to handle the outcome of what he put into motion?

This is the kind of book that I like that leaves something until the end so you can’t figure everything out before you get there. You know it will be a happy ending, but the author gives a little twist that makes the reader say … oh, clever thinking.

It’s obvious the love that Reese and Emily shared in the past didn’t stop when the relationship ended. They share an attraction between each other that is so obvious. Emily is quite a lucky woman to have such good guys looking out for her. I found this book to be happy, but also a pinch of sadness. Love in it self can be complex but add in friends, ex-lovers and old feelings it’s a mix that is sure to bring about a satisfying read.

This is a highly recommended book for any reader that is looking for a easy satisfying read.

The reader needs to pay attention so the full benefit of the different point of views and the narrative can be appreciated. These aspects of the story reveal different facets of this mystery/suspense novel that give special insight into what is happening.

I stayed up far too late, reading to make sure some of the despicable antagonists got their comeuppance. Of course, I was also hoping for a happy-ever-after or, at least, a happy-for-now.

A Life Unbroken is the first in the Alex McKay Series. There are many characters introduced and involved in the machinations and clandestine dealings. I’m looking forward to seeing some of them again in the books yet to come.

Horrible doesn’t even begin to describe the way Dr. Beeth treats Grace. He belittles her every chance he gets. Grace’s only flaw seems to be her low self-esteem, and with Dr. Beeth harping on her year after year, Grace definitely needs a boost. When Grace finally meets a guy who makes her heart skip a beat, Dr. Beeth strikes again. Will Grace finally stand up to her boss, or let love slip through her fingers?

Bruce and Grace are a great couple. They kept me chuckling throughout the book with their goofy jokes and teasing. It is clear that they are both are head over heels for each other from the moment they meet, and Bruce does some pretty crazy stuff in order to be with Grace. I found his actions a little hard to believe at times, but they were such a cute couple that it was easy to set aside my doubts and enjoy their romance.

I do wish there had been more explanation as to why Dr. Beeth was so mean to Grace. I understand some people are just nasty in general, but Dr. Beeth seemed to single Grace out quite a bit. As I read, I kept expecting some clarification regarding his treatment of her, but it never happened. Consequently, I found Dr. Beeth’s violent and irrational behavior simply absurd.

I also would have liked some of the secondary characters to be more rounded. All the good characters were very good and the bad characters were uniformly bad. The story would have seemed more realistic if some of the other characters would have had a bit more depth.

The far more serious problem is that Carlisle’s small fire draws the attention of the arsonist who doesn’t like anyone stealing the limelight. He comes after her with a frightening single-minded focus. Can Carlisle save herself and their budding romance from the flames of a maniac?

Carlisle has big dreams. She wants to go to culinary school in New York, to get out of her small town and really start to live her life. Winning the monetary prize of the barbecue contest is her ticket out of there and into school. When a small back-yard fire gets out of control, Carlisle can smell her dreams going up in the flames. Chet is a fireman and his team responds promptly to the call. There’s an arsonist loose and Chet knows it’s only a matter of time before there’s a dead body among the gutted homes popping up more and more frequently. Despite the seriousness of both their situations – the sparks fly between Carlisle and Chet, and soon the fire burning between them is too intent to ignore.

This is a really intense story. Despite the rocky start, it was clear to me from the beginning Chet and Carlisle were meant to be. From Carlisle almost burning her house down, to Chet nearly swallowing his tongue each time they came into contact with each other, their chemistry was burning hot and believable. I also enjoyed how Chet didn’t immediately turn into a slick, suave gentleman the instant he felt attracted to Carlisle. He dropped her peace-offering of brownies, he became stoic and silent in her presence. He wasn’t gauche or silly, but like a realistic man got it wrong a few times before he became easier and more charming around Carlisle.

I loved how the author hit the right balance for me between romantic-hero material and realism (ie not a perfect Prince Charming). It made me enjoy this story all the more. This also isn’t your average “guess it immediately” style of mystery. While the blossoming romance between Carlisle and Chet is front and center the plot of the arsonist is not some tame, throw-away thing. I found myself quite intrigued by it and really enjoying trying to guess who it was. The plot was twisty, with a few curve balls I didn’t see coming. I thought this was a really good blend between romance and suspense, this hit a lot of my checks on an excellent story with great characters and a proper plot I could sink my teeth into.

There is also a really strong secondary cast of characters that I thought helped flesh out the story and added extra depth. While I really enjoyed the plot surrounding the arsonist I was a little disappointed that Carlisle fell so easily (initially) into the “stupid heroine” trap. Thoroughly believable – what woman hasn’t acted crazily a time or two around a man? – it still made me wince when Carlisle took the bait, hook line and sinker. Carlisle generally wasn’t “too stupid to live” though and redeemed herself in my eyes with some of her later actions.

Overall I found this an excellent story, with well-drawn characters and a deep plot and with a mystery not easily solved. The romance is strong, but very sweet (only a few kisses toward the end of the story – nothing too steamy), suitable for those who prefer to see the slow build-up in a relationship and not have their romance graphic or fast-paced. A story I’d share happily with friends, family or even older friends I feel this is sure to appeal to a broad range of readers. Strongly recommended.

So when Carmen writes about the handsome owner of the resort, Johnny, who disapproves of Carmen’s curiosity and her stubbornness when she is on the trail of a story, Elisha starts to wonder if there is something illegal going on in this idyllic paradise.

The plot moves quickly from one adventure to the next, and there are many plot twists. The suspense builds page by page, and Elisha has a very hard time trying to decide who to trust, who is telling the truth. Everyone has secrets, but which secrets are important. Elisha is convinced, because of a number of small incidents, that Carmen is still on the island, but she can’t find anyone to confirm that.

Dangerous Paradise is a real page turner, and I found it very hard to put it down. Danger abounds and Elisha is on her own, guided only by her love for her sister. However, I found the conclusion of the novel to be rather a let down. I won’t give any spoilers, but the ending didn’t seem to match the intensity of the rest of the plot.

Mystery lovers who want to take an exciting trip to an island resort will truly enjoy following Elisha’s adventures. She is a strong protagonist and the plot is non-stop excitement.
