…and they lived happily ever after. A modern fairy tales boxed set.

This boxed set includes six modern fairy tales by popular and bestselling romance authors. In this set you will find:

Red: A Seduction Tale by Maddie James (Little Red Riding Hood)
Sins of the Father by Janet Eaves (Sleeping Beauty)
Dixie White and the Seven Dates by Cat Shaffer (Snow White)
Just Right by Arlene Hittle (The Three Bears)
Death Sat Beside Her by Jennifer Anderson (Little Miss Muffet)
Playing the Piper by May Williams (The Pied Piper)

And They Lived Happily Ever After has a little bit of everything!

”Playing the Piper” by May Williams (Contemporary-sensual)

Penny is a very entertaining heroine. Her inner thoughts and the things she writes in her diary never failed to bring a smile to my face. I love how good she is with her students. However, Penny is very insecure. She frequently jumps to conclusions about James and his motivations concerning her and the park she loves. I could understand her misgivings the first time around, but they seemed to straighten things out fairly quickly. Unfortunately at the very next sign of trouble, Penny is ready to believe the worst again. The situation Penny and James find themselves in is very difficult, but without trust they aren’t going to make it very far. Will Penny finally give James a chance or will she let her insecurities cloud her judgment?

Some of the secondary characters in this short story are very nasty at the beginning but undergo some dramatic changes by the end. I understood the reason for one character’s change, but some of the others changed very quickly and without much explanation. Consequently, I found those parts unrealistic.

I also think that Penny and James’ relationship progresses too quickly, especially given Penny’s inability to trust James. However, the ending was still sweet and the situation with the park is solved in an interesting and fun way.

“Just Right” by Arlene Hittle (Contemporary-sensual)

I truly felt sorry for Callie. She has fame, good looks, and money. From the outside, her life might look perfect. However, I don’t envy the price Callie has paid for fame. As I watched Callie struggle to manage her public persona versus her personal life, it was easy to see why she needed a vacation out of the spotlight.

Ty and his brothers are certainly an interesting group. They teased each other unmercifully, but they also cared for and looked out for each other. Callie was nothing like Ty expected her to be, and their first encounter with each other was anything but smooth. I could certainly sense some underlying chemistry. However, I found it very hard to get a sense of what kind of couple Callie and Ty will be. He is very jealous and possessive right from the start even though they don’t know each other very well. Most of their encounters are antagonistic despite their physical attraction. In spite of these issues, Ty is a good man who just wants to protect the woman he loves from the ugly side of the media.

I must say that I found the “happy for now” ending to be very realistic and a good solution for Callie and Ty. Callie’s schedule is very demanding and while being famous has definite drawbacks, she isn’t ready to leave the spotlight just yet. I’m not sure what the future will hold for this new couple, but I think they are on the right track.

“Red” by Maddie James (Paranormal-spicy)

“Red” was by far the most unusual story in this collection. There is a lot about Garnet’s world that I don’t understand. Even Garnet doesn’t seem to know much about it. I definitely think the magic and the history of Garnet’s family needed to be expanded in greater detail. While a bit of mystery is intriguing, Garnet was put in a position of making major, life changing decisions mere moments after learning that her family is much more than it seems. I understand that her family thought they were protecting Garnet by allowing her some time to live a normal life, but I think it is unfair to spring everything on her right before she’s called to make a monumental decision.

Garnet’s relationship with Max ignites from the moment they meet and the chemistry between them burns brighter with each turn of the page. Sex between them is nothing short of scorching. However, I do wish they had had more time to get to know each other. Unfortunately time is something neither of them seem to have. Does Garnet make the right choice, or will the night end in disappointment?

“Death Sat Beside Her” by Jennifer Anderson (Suspense-sensual)

Elysse is a sweet girl, but she is stuck conforming to her mother’s idea of what a young lady should be. Her mom strikes me as very old fashioned and controlling. I know that her mother loves her, but it was clear to me that Elysse was struggling to gain her mother’s approval and was losing her individuality in the process.

Everything changes when Liam walks into her life. The attraction between them is clear from the start. Unfortunately, Elysse has a boyfriend. As I read, I wasn’t sure how the love triangle was going to play out. I can’t give any details without ruining the story, but I will say that I found it very easy to cheer for Liam.

I enjoyed watching Elysse begin to distance herself from the carefully crafted image she’s maintained for so long. Elysse says she’s making the changes because she wants too, but I couldn’t help but wonder if Elysse was simply trying to remake herself into the kind of girl she thought Liam would like.

It was very easy for me to figure out who the murderer was. The suspense of this story came from not knowing who the next victim would be and wondering when Liam and Elysse would put all the pieces of the puzzle together. The conclusion is very satisfying, and I have no doubt that Liam and Elysse are well on their way to a happy ending.

“Sins of the Father” by Janet Eaves (Contemporary-spicy)

Aurora has led a very sheltered life thanks to her overprotective aunts. I must admit that I’m not entirely sure why Aurora’s family went to such great lengths to insulate her from the world. There is some violence in Aurora’s past, but she was too young at the time to remember anything and drastic steps were taken to conceal Aurora’s identity. Aurora certainly needed some degree of protection, but the situation with the aunts just didn’t sit right with me.

Consequently, it is very easy to understand Aurora’s powerful urge to break away. I do think she made some very poor decisions in the process. She is very trusting of Philip, a man she knows nothing about, and she puts herself in an extremely vulnerable position. Fortunately, Philip is a very nice guy, and I enjoyed watching Aurora and Philip relax in each other’s company.

As the story progressed, and the truth of Aurora’s past is revealed, Ms. Eaves did a good job of building the suspense. When Aurora finally learns about her parents and who Philip is, I couldn’t wait to find out what their next step would be. Unfortunately, the story ended at this point. I must admit to being disappointed as I had hoped for a more satisfying conclusion.

“Dixie White and the Seven Dates” by Cat Shaffer (Contemporary-Sweet)

Dorothea’s story is easily my favorite from this anthology. She had my sympathy from page one when she learns some ugly things about her boyfriend. Rather than wallow in self pity, Dorothea decides to take control of her life for the first time. As I read, I had the pleasure of watching Dorothea blossom into a vibrant, caring young woman I’d be proud to call a friend. It took courage for Dorothea to walk away from everything she’s ever known. Fortunately, Dorothea discovers a wonderful small town in Kentucky that nurtures her new found desire to grown and change.

Ms. Shaffer did an excellent job creating the charming small town of Cardington, Kentucky, and most of the people who lived there were just as lovely, especially Lou and Len. Without their support and encouragement, Dorothea’s quest for independence would have been much more difficult.

The blind dates Dorothea goes on are entertaining. However, the men she met seemed more like caricatures rather than real people. Some of the dates were better than others, but I wasn’t surprised that Dorothea didn’t really click with any of them.

Rick is definitely a great guy. He and Dorothea are very comfortable around each other, and they have the beginnings of great chemistry. Their slow dance is particularly memorable. I have no doubt that they will grow into a wonderful couple.

I enjoyed reading And They Lived Happily Ever After. Each story is different with a unique take on various classic fairy tales. I recommend this collection to anyone who enjoys contemporary romance.

Will Eli and Adam be able to help Samantha?

The character development was absolutely phenomenal. All of the main characters had complex and fascinating backstories that were woven into the plot beautifully. I really loved seeing how they changed as a result of the things that happened to them in this book. Their personal growth not only made a great deal of sense given their personalities and what triggered these changes, it was fascinating to see unfold as well.

Depression isn’t always an easy disease to treat. By far my favorite part of this tale was how honest it was about what it’s like to live with this kind of mental illness. It still treated Samantha with the kindness that she deserved, though. Her struggles were neither sugar coated or sensationalized. They were simply one part of one ordinary person’s life, and I appreciated that.

I was impressed with how intricate the world building was. The narrator gave such a detailed overview of what it’s like to be an angel that I almost felt as though I could sneak into heaven and know exactly what was going on at any point in time. What makes this amazing is that the hierarchy of angels in this afterlife is anything but simple. There was a lot to learn about where Eli and Adam came from, but I picked it all up very quickly.

There were several plot twists that I didn’t see coming ahead of time. It was a lot of fun to be surprised by them, especially since they worked so well with everything that had been shared with the audience before they happened. I don’t typically miss these kinds of surprises in stories, so the fact that Ms. Rabig kept me completely unaware of what was coming was pretty wonderful.

Angels with Clipped Wings was glorious. I can’t recommend it highly enough!

Life is still life, and love is still love. But was her existence really perfect, or was it something else entirely?

Not everyone’s adjustment to the afterlife is smooth. What happens to the people who refuse to walk into The Light?

Change is scary. One of the things I enjoyed the most about this novel was how it explored why people are so afraid of new things and what happens when someone is caught off guard by it. I was especially intrigued by how the different characters reacted to circumstances that were sometimes similar to one another. No two people will necessarily respond the same way to the same sequence of events. It was interesting to see how their personalities and past experiences influenced their reactions to these scenes.

This book had a tendency to tell the reader what was happening instead of showing it to us. The characters themselves were well done, but I never had the chance to figure out what it was that made them so fascinating for myself because the narrator told me just about everything there was to know about them as soon as they were introduced. This tendency also extended to the plot itself. The premise was great, but I wasn’t able to immerse myself in what was happening because so much of it was revealed upfront.

The plot twists were nicely done. While I saw some of them coming ahead of time, there were also a few surprises along the way that I never would have expected from this tale. The author seemed to have an intuitive understanding of what the audience was expecting from her, and she knew exactly when to give to those expectations as well as when she should ignore them. Her creativity in this area makes me curious to see what she will come up with next!

I’d recommend At the Corner of Magnetic and Main to anyone who is in the mood for a romantic ghost story that isn’t frightening at all.

Anders and Finch have completely unrelated habits and interests. Will their opposite approaches to life be an asset, or will their differences turn out to be too big of a hurdle for them?

The pacing remained steady throughout the entire story. I was happy with how smoothly the scenes were written. There weren’t any instances of the plot moving too quickly or too slowly. Such stable pacing made it easy to stay focused on the storyline as I waited to see what would happen to the characters.

I would have liked to know more about the backstories of Anders and Finch. It was hard to emotionally connect to them because I knew so little about where they came from or why they approached life in such different ways. Having this information would have not only rounded out their personalities, it would have also helped to empathize with certain behavioral tics they both had that weren’t always easy to understand.

Not everyone has the same idea of what should and should not be considered fun. One of the things I enjoyed the most about this tale was how it explored what the characters did and did not consider to be a good use of their free time. The wife-carrying contest was particularly amusing. It’s not something I’d ever heard of before, but the narrator’s description of how it works made me smile. I can see how events like that would be worthwhile for some people.

The Neighbor is a good choice for anyone who is in the mood for something gentle and sweet.

After years of abuse and torture at the hands of her father, Katia uses her genetically engineered “gift” to destroy the lab that has been her living hell.

Katia stirs more than strictly professional feelings within Julius, but he, too, harbors a dark secret that could threaten everything building between them. When Julius is attacked and kidnapped, Katia must face her demons and fight like she’s never fought before to save the man she loves.

Imagine a life so unbearable that death is the only release.

This is the only life that Katia has ever known. She has suffered physical, mental, and emotional abuse, and she has the scars to prove it. Frankly, I’m amazed that she can function at all. I must warn readers that Katia’s story does contain some graphic violence. Despite everything that Katia has been through, she still finds beauty in small things and tries to protect innocent people when she can. I admire her strength and kindness, particularly toward children. However her self esteem is very low. She believes that her power makes her evil. When Julius walks into her life, he tries to convince her that she is not the evil being her father tried to shape her into. Will Katia embrace her power, or let it destroy her and the one man she’s ever cared about?

Julius is a very good man who is exceedingly patient with Katia. His tenderness is truly touching. I wasn’t surprised when Katia and Julius developed feelings for each other. However, I think it happened a bit too quickly given the circumstances they met under. When Julius found Katia, she was barely alive and needed a lot of time to recover. Katia is understandably paranoid and suspicious of everyone she meets. She spends a lot of time brooding about this, and I must admit that I began to find those passages a bit repetitive. Although Katia does begin to let her guard down around Julius, most of their time together is spent with him nursing her back to health. Then the tables are turned and Katia has to rescue Julius after he is kidnapped. I would have liked to see them spend more time together on more equal footing in order for their connection to feel more genuine.

The last part of Cursed is very fast paced and had me flying through the pages. Each time I thought Katia and Julius were safe, something else would happen and they were plunged back in danger. I really had no idea how their story would end. The conclusion is satisfying, but I still have some doubts concerning Katia and Julius’ future. I can only hope that Ms. Ross has a sequel in the works to answer my lingering questions.

Overall, I liked Cursed. Katia is a well rounded character who deserves every shred of happiness she can get. I recommend Cursed to anyone who enjoys fast paced science fiction with a bit of romance.

Nick Ryan was always around in high school, but Jodi never thought of him in a romantic way. Lately though, she’s found herself thinking about him more and more, and wondering if she should have paid him more attention in high school. Upon learning that Nick will be attending the reunion, Jodi can’t help but think it’s a sign.

The night of the reunion, Jodi and Nick meet and sparks fly, but Nick’s insecurities threaten to undermine everything before they even have a chance to get started. Can Jodi convince him that they belong together, and that their first chance at love may also be their last?

Jodi feels like her life is at a loose end. Her mother has just passed away and Jodi found herself stuck in a job she didn’t particularly like. She’s also single and feeling completely alone. She’d always had a regret she and Nick, a high school friend, had never managed to get together and see if the attraction she felt for him could lead somewhere. So when Jodi received the invitation for her five year school reunion she felt full of hope. With the chance to reconnect with Nick too important to pass up, Jodi can only hope maybe this time around she and Nick could finally connect how she’d always dreamed of.

This is a sweet romance, filled with the hope and joy of second chances. I really enjoyed Jodi’s positive attitude and enthusiasm. Even though she found herself in difficult circumstances and was still grieving for the loss of her mother, she remained positive throughout it all. Unwilling to allow herself to become mired in the rivalries of her old high school days, I also respected Jodi for rising above the petty jealousies of her old classmate.

I really enjoyed how both Nick and Jodi discussed both the past and their potential future, reconnecting with each other emotionally first. There is no descriptive/explicit touching or intimacy in this novel, which I also found refreshing and helped me focus more on the emotional connection between the two characters. This might be a short story, but I had no problem feeling the emotional bond between Nick and Jodi. I felt the author did a great job with their chemistry and attraction. There is also some light conflict with old rivalries, but nothing to impede Nick and Jodi to getting back together.

Overall I found this a happy, hopeful and warm read, one sure to leave a smile on many a readers face. I found the characters to be gentle and soft, and the sweet romance to be one suitable for all ages.

Writing their conversations this way made it easy for me to get to know the characters. The dialogue gave me many hints about their personalities and interests which was yet another reason why I liked it so much!

There was a little too much foreshadowing in the beginning of this book. I was able to figure out a big plot twist almost immediately because so many clues were provided about what was going on with it. It would have been helpful to have fewer hints to work with so that I could have had a higher chance of being surprised by the scene that revealed what was happening.

The world building was quite well done. When I read it I felt as though I really was walking alongside Breanwynne after she left home. For a little while I actually wondered if this book was part of a series because of how rich and detailed the descriptions were of everything. While this turned out not to be the case as far as I can tell, it was a lot of fun to explore the world that these characters lived in.

Witch, Cat, and Cobb made me smile. I’d recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy stories that are set in the past.

When Kendra Murdoch’s brother in law murders her sister, she takes charge of her nephew and two nieces. Fearing the man plans the same fate for her, she seeks shelter in Radford Crossing where she opens a café to support her small family.

Determined to be self-sufficient, Kendra shuns all advances from the handsome sheriff as danger hangs heavily over her head.

Butch Parrish battled a snowstorm and a killer to rescue Kendra and the children. He’ll do whatever is necessary to protect the independent young woman who rekindles sensations he hoped were dead long ago. Protecting her, dealing with the town gossips and investigating a stagecoach robbery, Butch has a battle on his hands.

Winter Bride is an action-packed western that combines beautifully with a heartfelt, and not entirely predictable, romance.

Late nineteenth century Texas: its a tough country, and peopled by some seriously tough characters.

Sheriff Butch Parrish is the tough town sheriff, surrounded by some of the types of characters one might expect. He’s not entirely what we reader’s might expect though. He’s obviously dedicated to his job and also quick to step up and be the person to help. We readers find him admirable from the start.

However, the lovely Kendra isn’t one to be swept away. She has her own responsibilities, and more than a little heartbreak and fear to deal with. She isn’t going to be an easy one to save. Kendra is determined to take care of herself and the children she’s inherited from her sister. Her deadly brother-in-law isn’t about to leave her in piece – but this is more than a family battle – because this is the west.

Texas in the late nineteenth century is an adventurous sort of place in its own right; the sort of place that tests its inhabitants. Storms, terrain and isolation all bring the own challenges. A difficult woman might be more than one man wants to take on.

Butch, the sheriff is more than a decent guy, though. You can’t but fall for the big guy, who’s so much more than a heart-throb; big, determined, yet kind. He’s wonderful, apart from his great desire to help, of course. Kendra’s effort to take care of all, on her own, might have been achievable, apart from her brother-in-law’s evil intentions.

Conversations, setting, interaction of the children, as well as the occasional very light touch of humor is all just right!

Winter Bride  offers a real western pioneering flavor. Sorting the large number of characters occasionally slows what otherwise would be a fast-paced western. However, its a small point of complaint. I do think anyone who enjoys a good western romance OR adventure should put Winter Bride right at the top of their reading list.
