The author lays out a solid storyline with strong characters and powerful backstories. As the story progresses, characters that blended into the background begin to take development and soon the reader is immersed in a world of espionage, secrets and lies. The descriptions, dialogue, and events portray the reality that this novel could be happening in reality right now. The research was strong and had a solid foundation leading the reader to understand that the author has immersed himself in research or has a background in the topics he is writing about.

I personally loved the deep descriptions of the medical/biological components of the story. It is evident that the author has a strong background in the sciences and this cannot go unnoticed by the reader. Nothing is left lacking and the story flows smoothly without feeling forced. I found myself having a difficult time putting the book down since once the excitement began, it would rarely even taper off. I also found myself drawn to the characters; following their lives and being drawn in by their stresses and theories. The suspense from the plot was one that resonates with the reader long after the book is put down for the evening.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a science fiction journey that is so well researched that it truly could be happening right now! This was one book that caused me to rethink what happens behind closed doors.

Personally I found the collection to be great; the condensed stories do not leave the reader lacking as they all find completion by the end. The detail for each story resonates strongly with the reader. Each story had a little to offer the reader in various ways, for example, A Ghost of a Chance looks at family secrets and family ties, which also resonates strongly with The Keeper which also pulls very strongly on family lineage and secrets that are held. Myths and Legends 101 can cause the reader to focus on their own perception of the world in which we reside in a more mundane sense while Dangerous Dreams and Witch You Were Here challenge the reader’s perception of the realized world that we tend to take for granted.

The editing was clean, the story lines were clear and character interaction and development-even for shorter stories was great. When I found one story was ending I was elated to begin the next story! Each author has a great skill at drawing the reader in and entertaining with an out-of-this-world story.

This story causes the reader to become invested in what the characters choose; the reader is drawn into wanting what is best while at the same time studying the campus assaults knowing that something more sinister is going on.

Brenda Margriet is a great story-teller and is able to explain the most primal of instincts in such a way that the reader feels that they are experiencing them first hand. The roiling emotions and stress of the various situations and decisions that must be made tie the reader directly into the story line.

I highly recommend picking up a copy of When Time Falls Still; just as the title suggests, you will wish time could fall still so you never have to put the book down!

Throughout the story the reader is placed in a position of trying to reconcile Amanda’s thoughts and actions, along with current events.

The author had a smooth writing style and great descriptions; although the editing could be a little cleaner. The story itself kept the reader guessing and the unique perspective the reader was placed makes for a fascinating look at the world of the author’s mind. Amanda: More than any woman is a story and a view of life that I had not considered before.

While I would have liked to have known a little more backstory and witnessed deeper character development, overall this was a good read from an author who offers a very fascinating perspective and view of life from beginning to end. K. M. Tolan works through the separation of Scott and Water and presents both sides in such a remarkable way that the reader feels interwoven into the story. The feelings that Scott and Water feel, the internal and external struggles become so real to the reader that putting down the book is not an option. To right what was wronged so many years in the past, Scott and Water join forces to combat an evil that is ever present in our own world today.

Siren’s Song touches on so many relevant topics we face today both emotionally and morally; and the threads of the story are woven so strongly that that once you are done reading Siren’s Song, you just want to pick it up again and begin reading again! I must admit I have not read a book that resonated with me this well in a long time. I cannot wait to pick up another book by K.M. Tolan, but truth be told, the next book by him will have a high bar to aspire to!

From a Poison Pen is a book full of ten very different stories covering lives of very different individuals. The short stories cover everything from wartime to peacetime; severe insanity and unbalanced personality disorder to the unhappy marriage.

B.P. Smythe does an excellent job developing characters that resonate with the reader, yet are always just a touch outside of reality. While events might be plausible, the author finds an interesting way to place a humorous spin on the various situations. Utilizing dark humor and heaping amounts of irony, the author creates a fascinating dark world in which anything is possible.

One of my favorite stories was the very first, Constricted Love. The whole situation at one point was so far-fetched and then reined back in by the author that by the end of the story my head was spinning with the plausibility but still confused on what just happened.

The story, Girls of the BDM, was a story that dripped historical events and made the reader wonder throughout the whole story whether they were rooting for a character that was ultimately evil. Again, by the end of this story I was quite amazed at how the author had tied the loose ends up.

Some of the stories might be a little strong for some readers. The author descriptively explains the acts of torture and the homicide of some characters. Crime scenes descriptions as well as the thoughts and feelings that the characters’ experience right before death may be unsettling for some.

I found that the stories in the book, From a Poison Pen, were well researched, strongly written and a great experience! I am glad that I was able to experience the mind of B.P. Smythe first hand. I will definitely be looking for his other work in the future!

The Mutineers is a story set in the not so distant future with the first colonization of Mars. The initial setup of the story is one that is not far-fetched with the current rise of technology and the current direction of humankind. The story follows the lives of those on both the Mars colony named Zephyria Planum Research Station and the space station named the Sakharov station as well as several key individuals of the world government back on Earth. When the world government back on Earth begins to crumble, it is easy to overlook the little colony on Mars and focus on the Nuclear weaponry located on the Sakharov Station.

The author does an amazing job in showing the inner demons of the characters as well as great character development throughout the book. Although the reader understands the lives of those stationed on the Mars colony is less than ideal, it is not until deeper into the book that the reader understands the horrible sentence that these individuals have been dealt since the privatization of the research funds limit what resources are available to the distant station. Suddenly understanding that there is a limited ration of water, food and even ability to clean uniforms puts the world of the characters into perspective.

The difficult decisions that the characters must make along with the repercussions that follow are real and draw the reader in to understand the dynamic that unfolds. The author works with an understanding of astronomy, space travel and the physics and dangers involved with living off-plant. The descriptions are strong and the character development is great. From understanding the PTSD that the characters have been dealing with to the understanding that the characters may never be able to return to normal life is a great undertaking that is handled with precision.

The story is strong and reads as though the reader is watching a movie. The only drawback is some very minor editing errors. I found the main story line strong and very believable. The characters were very likable and fully realized. The overall incorporation of the various overlapping story lines, from the Mars colony to the Sakharov Station, blend seamlessly and show great a great writing style. The ending ended where it should, it did not run short and was not strung out longer than it should.

I highly recommend picking up a copy of The Mutineers, you won’t be disappointed! I know that I will definitely be looking for other books by this author!

Whereas Holly sometimes makes poor decisions and has to face the consequences, the reader is placed in a position to understand the thoughts that have caused Holly to take the actions which she has taken.

The internal struggles, disappointment and fears that Holly feels are feelings that resonate with the reader. The lack of a support system, a broken family circle and the ever consuming feelings of worthlessness and abandonment from being forced from home to home tear at the heart of the reader. Jace, the appointed School Social Worker tries to walk Holly through the grief and rebuilding processes but even Jace is forced to back down when Holly is unwilling to change her actions.

The relationship between Holly and her boyfriend Zander is one that goes beyond physical attraction. When Holly and Zander first spend time together, the reader begins to understand that Zander can see the beauty that Holly hides from the world. Holly holds back, fearing the destructive cycle of abuse that she has so often witnessed her mother being pulled into. The author is remarkable in portraying the sexual attraction and the internal struggle that Holly finds herself facing.

The author vividly reinforces the ever strong tide of emotions within Holly. The constant nightmares become more and more real, the memories that Holly struggles to repress come flooding back with a vengeance. The letters that Holly writes to her mother show her inward struggles and growing feelings of depression. These all add to the outward constant struggle that the reader is made keenly aware of through Holly’s interactions. One of the greatest quotes that I found which describe Holly’s feelings is: “it felt like I was trapped in the bad memories and couldn’t escape.”

Holly is a very likable character and for those who have gone through struggles similar to hers will find that the feelings, choices and struggles presented by the author are very real and approached in a very strong way. Several times throughout the book Holly struggles to understand her own emotions which have come to torment her.

If you want to read a story where you feel you grow as much as the characters grow and you wish to feel the raw emotions stir within you just like the author describes, I highly recommend this book! I could not put it down!

The author is amazing at portraying the painful suffering that Tabitha endures. The constant frustration of failed interventions, the constant worry that something will happen and the frustrating feeling that “if something did not happen this time, it will be twice as bad next time,” always weighs in the reader’s mind. The author realistically lays out a support network for Tabitha, one that is real in every sense of the word, yet seems to crumble when put to the test.

Finding the Upside of Down will be difficult for some readers who have experienced severe bulling harassment in the past. The realistic descriptions, the painful struggle and the constant checking over the shoulder fear that victims have felt in the past come to the forefront while reading this book.

Finding the Upside of Down is just that, finding positivity in the harrowing darkness of feeling as though you have failed everyone. I believe that every reader can identify with the struggles that Tabitha has encountered. Finding the Upside of Down is one book that can engage the reader and help break the feeling of isolation that is so common in victims of bullying.

Since she is half Lakota Sioux she faces discrimination from both the rest of society and her family. The author puts light on the struggles of Tashina’s people and shows Tashina’s struggles to be accepted as a member of her own tribe.

As if the interactions of society were not enough there is still the pursuers who will stop at nothing to recover the USB drive and see Tashina dead. Add to that the strained relationship between Tashina and David and you have a severely complex story that causes the reader to look at the root of our own shared society.
