Kallen de Mangeron grew up in a convent, her noble family never knowing of her birth. When a new Mother Superior informs them of her existence, they send trusted knight Griffith Sommersby to escort her home.

Griffith’s heart broke when he lost his wife and infant son during childbirth, and he’s kept his feelings locked away from the world—until he meets Kallen. He soon learns her dark secret—that she sees auras around people—which allows her insight into their actions and personalities.

Now Quentin, bastard brother to the king, decides to harness Kallen’s gift in a plot to win the throne. Will Quentin successfully use a kidnapped Kallen as his political pawn, or will Griffith be able to stop him before Kallen changes the course of England’s history?

In this early thirteenth century tale, women are shown as completely the victims of the machinations of men. They are used for creating useful family ties as well as for revenge. There is probably too much of uncomfortable truth here, but the start of A Knight for Kallen is abrupt and ugly, with injustice reigning supreme.

Then unexpected kindness turns the tide.

Kallen is unusually strong and clever…particularly so for the circumstances of her childhood. Her future is plainly uncertain; she may be a ‘mischievous spirit,’ but she is in a world ruled by nobility, and mostly male nobility at that. She must rely on herself and her own unusual abilities…at least, she thinks she must.

Griffith, a fighting man who is no stranger to tragedy, makes an unexpected impression upon her. Though she ‘reads’ him – she is also left unsure.

From her first journey onward, Kallen’s path is unpredictable. We readers will find ourselves intrigued with the events as much as with the people.

Linwood’s setting – from castle to abbey, and horseback to forest – always seems completely perfect. And for the most part, we are swept along, from great halls and along lonely roads. Some conversations carry the burden of too much information and slow the pace, although these moments are rare.

There is no denying the strength of the characters; minor secondary characters are often as strong and clear as primary. Although lacking on the charm scale, A Knight for Kallen does offer action, unpredictability and powerfully intimate feelings.

“The Salt Box Trilogy,” Book 2

To make matters worse, her car breaks down in Salt Box, Colorado, a town not much bigger than a salt shaker. But maybe her luck is changing the handsome owner of Praeger House, the town s premier hotel, needs a kitchen assistant.

Clark Denham realizes his diamond in the rough is a polished gem when Lizzy steps up to save the hotel s breakfast buffet after his temperamental head chef quits. It isn t long before she s winning his heart as smoothly and efficiently as she runs his kitchen.

Their relationship goes from simmer to rolling boil with the speed of a short order cook. But when a bevy of not-so-lovely ladies shows up in Salt Box, Lizzy s past disaster threatens to flatten her happily ever after faster than a falling souffle.

“Warning: Contains salty dialogue, several servings of high-carb cooking, and a big platter of screaming-hot bedroom delights.”

She can run but there was no way a past that made national news and the tabloids wouldn’t catch up to her eventually. Boy did it ever!

After read Finding Mr. Right Now, book 1 in the Salt Box Trilogy, I couldn’t wait to visit again. This quaint little Colorado town nestled at the foot of the slopes is full of great characters and townsfolk who watch out for each other. They’re used to seeing strangers and welcome the ones who decide make Salt Box their home so I wasn’t surprised when Lizzy rolled in on fumes and found her place in town. The early chapters of the book make references to the catastrophe that forced LIzzy to leave her home, change her name and look for a fresh start. When she actually reveals the details, I couldn’t help feel sorry for her but I was also curious about the rest of the story. There had to be more to it. She simply wasn’t that person to be so careless. I felt certain there were some not so Lovely Ladies who had a hand in her downfall. Time and chapters would tell.

I first met the owner of Praeger House in book 1 of the series. Clark Denham made an impression then so, I was curious to get to know him better and watch his and Lizzy’s story play out. I thought it was clever how the author built their attraction and connection slowly, not unlike how a chef would prepare a tasty sauce. Maybe it was by design or chance, but this isn’t a love at first sight kind of story and that’s just right for them. She’s new and a little wary and Clark comes across as someone who takes his time and gives his full attention to the things that matter. When it becomes Lizzy that matters, that’s when the book really got good!

I really like this author’s voice. The story flows well with vivid descriptions and snappy dialogue. I enjoyed revisiting some of the stops made on my first trip and seeing how the main and secondary characters I met on that trip were doing. The final addition to the series has yet to be released but I already know I’ll be waiting (im)patiently in line. Who will be the next hero or heroine to find love in Salt Box?

Readers who enjoy a well played out small town contemporary romance with just the right amount of heat, should give this book, actually this series, a read. Time well spent.

Love soothes the deepest of scars.

Spies and Lovers, Book 2

Signing over her dowry is their only choice. Until Lord Drummond suggests something much more scandalous. She can keep her dowry—in exchange for the Bellinghams working three months as a housemaid and stable boy.

Scarred from his service to the Crown, Rafe recognizes the young Simon Bellingham has the makings of a good duke. Minerva is a different story. Her pure, delicate beauty only underscores Rafe’s tarnished, bleak soul.

Yet he delights in cracking Minerva’s icy reserve to reveal a fiery, stubborn woman. And Minerva discovers the gruff master of Wintermarsh has the heart of a poet. But before they can find a future safe in each other’s arms, a menace from Simon’s licentious past slithers back into their lives, forcing Rafe to plan the most important rescue mission of his life.

Warning: Contains a paragon of the beau monde who gets the hang of polishing silver, and a master of the house who’d like her to make his bed—preferably with him in it. Also passion unleashed with the mere touch of a finger. Readers are encouraged to swoon.

“Had she made a bargain with the devil?” Quite possibly but, if the tension and chemistry that sizzled between Rafe and Minerva was any indication, extracting payment was going to be a pleasure for them both.

Book 2 of the Spies and Lovers series begins with some excitement. I haven’t read the first book but it looks like I’m missing out on a terrific story if I don’t remedy that soon. Book 2 is a stand alone so it isn’t that I feel that I need to have read the first to better enjoy the second, it’s just that the second was so much fun why wouldn’t I want to go back for more?

Rafe and Minerva apparently butted heads in An Indecent Invitation. I guess readers who want to see “how they met” might want to read that one first but I was able to pick up enough details to understand that there was some built in tension. Plus, Minerva calls Rafe an arse more than once. Respectable ladies of the Ton aren’t supposed to speak that way so, it really made me laugh. I could tell Rafe made his suggestion on how the Bellingham siblings could work to repay their debt as much to help young Simon as it was to poke at Minerva.

Speaking of Simon, bless him, he really needed a firm hand and no matter how much his sister loved him and berated him at the same time, she wasn’t going to be able to fix him. I really had to admire Rafe for heart and determination to see the young Duke fulfill his potential. I can’t be sure but I think I met his future Duchess and she’s going to be fiesty!

Maxwell Drake also looks like a likely candidate for a future installment of Spies and Lovers. He has the background similar to both Gray (from Book 1) and Rafe. Plus, he has the dark and broody presence down to an art. Total hero material! I’m very curious about the letter Minerva received from him while traveling in Scotland. He may have his hands full!

This was a really enjoyable book a good introduction to the series even though it isn’t the first in the series. After meeting Lily and Gray, I can tell I need rectify having not read their book, yet. Readers who love a good spicy historical set in the Regency Era should most definitely give this one a try.

Nothing is more important to Diego than his kitchen. He’s dedicated to his job running one of the top restaurants in town and doesn’t have time for relationships. Then the boss, building on the restaurant’s success, brings in Ben. He’s young, hot, and not nearly as unlikeable as Diego wishes.

But between the distance of age and the old wounds both men are still nursing, it may be easier if Diego gives up on making something other than his kitchen the center of his world.

Diego isn’t too impressed when the restaurant’s owner insists his nephew be the new pastry chef. Despite his near-constant sour mood, Diego just can’t manage to really be mad with Ben. Ben is determined to make his own way and enjoys all aspects of working as a pastry chef. Can the two men manage to work together?

This is a really interesting, food-centric story. While the main relationship revolves around Diego and Ben and the beginning of their relationship, it’s also a strong story about the restaurant and how the various chefs all work well together. I liked how even though Diego and Ben can’t quite work out how to get together for most of it, there’s always a positivity in their interactions. Diego feels he’s too much older than Ben, and is still quite hung up on his ex. And Ben is too unsure of Diego and their hot/cold interactions. Indeed, it’s not until right at the end of the story that Ben and Diego manage to find their way together.

In the background there was plenty of sub-plot around the other members of staff and the restaurant itself. This helped the story feel lighthearted to me – and not just a dramatic, emotional story of two men trying to find their way together. Still, it was both odd and interesting that this is definitely a M/M story where the two men don’t start their romantic relationship until pretty much the end of the story. I felt Diego’s epiphany about his ex wasn’t explained as thoroughly as I’d have liked considering how much of the book he was hung up on the man. This realization felt very sudden and wasn’t given as much detail as I thought it should have. This was a critical conclusion for Diego – and an important part in his and Ben’s coming together – and I needed to stop, go back and reread a chunk of the book, feeling like I’d missed something. That jolted me out of the story quite a bit. But the end-product – Diego and Ben coming together – was lovely to read and a real high point.

An emotional, well paced and really fun story that overall I enjoyed. With only one steamy sex scene and a few delicious kisses this story is sexy and steamy – but isn’t extreme or over the top. A lovely M/M I really enjoyed.

She’s his to protect for now but this lone wolf may have found the one woman who makes him want the life he’s sworn to never embrace.

Promised at the Moon is a new adult romance and one thing that I first noticed was that the story and the characters came first and the erotic bits came later, meaning that the sex was secondary in this book rather than the focus. This was unique for me to find in the paranormal genre but in this book it worked well. Not saying that it’s bad reading erotic paranormal books, but every now and then I want to read a full on paranormal with romance but where the sex doesn’t overtake the book.

The romance was there from the beginning, their chemistry and passion was palpable from the moment Liam and Natasha met. Their attraction was instant. While Liam needs to protect Natasha, this was more than a job. I enjoyed the build up a relationship based not only on attraction but trust as well.

Both of the characters got to know each other and their past and present. It was refreshing in a short story.

The climax of the book was hot, sexy and action filled. The timing was perfect for them to give into their chemistry. I loved it.

This is the first book in the series and I have to believe that the second book will be just as amazing. Paranormal romance readers who’ve never experienced the new adult romance style of story telling should give this one a try.

For Emma, the new post brings unexpected passion and chilling danger. But when murder strikes, she realizes the awful truth. Unless she and Edison devise a scheme to outwit a merciless killer, she could forever lose the man of her dreams—and even her very life….

I’ve read this book three times and I can’t believe it’s only now I’m writing a review. Amanda Quick’s stories are my go-to books when I need something I know will take me away from the stress of everyday life. I Thee Wed has an element of re-readability that I enjoy.

Ms. Quick’s stories sometimes have a formulaic feel to them that I find comforting. This novel isn’t boring or predictable except for the fact that the heroine is usually intriguing and unique, the hero is fascinated by her mind and personality and there’s always a villain that is clever and hard to catch. Trying to outsmart a criminal is a tough business, but add in an element of possible paranormal influence and it becomes engaging. Is the paranormal real or fake, is the Book of Secrets quackery or the genuine stuff of legends? Does Emma truly have an otherworldly talent or is it coincidence? Who killed the creepy letch? Who focused the young criminal’s attention on Edison? Will Edison be forced to kill him? Why is the tattoo so important? And what really happened to Ms. Kent? So many exciting questions need to be answered and Ms. Quick insures that a reader’s interest is kept engaged chapter after chapter.

My favorite part of this novel is Emma’s ability to challenge Edison. Not only about how competent a female can be in investigating a crime, but her clear-eyed empathy about the situation between the hero and his grandmother makes him doubt all that he assumed. She inspires Edison to see things differently, to question and to grow as a person. His falling in love with her makes him a better man in the end so it makes the happy ever after that much more powerful.

The sensual, sexy scenes are softly told – the descriptions are not graphic or glaring, but a reader has an open door view and can enjoy the moments when Edison and Emma succumb to their passions.

I Thee Wed is a guaranteed entertaining read. I enjoy the dialogue, the action, the suspense, the solving of the murders and Emma and Edison’s unusual courtship. There is a reason that this book is, and has been, on my keeper shelf. Ms. Quick knows how to write a romance story that gives fans of the genre exactly what they look for. I’m a satisfied, happy reader – again.

“Warning: Contains a former ugly duckling, and a big-hearted FBI agent who knows how to get his money’s worth at a kissing booth. Plus, a little black dress that comes off a whole lot easier than Dorothy’s ruby slippers.”

How a wallflower became a bombshell…..

Most everyone has a crush in high school or college. Years later in her life, when she met her crush again she’s nothing like what he would remember, if he remembered her, from high school.

With a little help from her best friend, Bianca, affectionately known as Charlie, gets the opportunity to show off her new self. Cole never knew what hit him!

Cole is an FBI agent. What he does not expect was to meet the beautiful Bianca and fall in love with her. He’s a seriously sexy character but it isn’t just his outer hotness, he’s truly a nice guy and the way he treats Bianca is truly heart felt romantic.

I was pleased to see that this wasn’t an instant love even though the book isn’t lengthy. Yes, she had a crush on him years ago and maybe it still colored her adult life but, the author showed the slow build kind of love. I saw them get to know each other and find out more about their lives. To develop the relationship. It didn’t hurt at all that they a passionate chemistry.

I loved reading this book as it gave me more than I expected. I expected the wallflower Bianca to meet Cole years later fall in love and live happily ever after. However, I got more, this is a plot that I see every now and then but the author included a lot of content in it that surprised me and had me fully involved to the very end. That’s a good book!

It’s all for show—or at least it should be. But if Falcondale isn’t careful, he may find a very real happily ever after with the woman of his dreams…

How the book starts doesn’t give a reader a decent hint as the hilarity, romance and fascinating dialogue that ensues as a reader meets all the players on stage. Piety, Trevor, Miss Baker, Ms. Breedlowe, and the crusty but loveable Lady Frinfrock, are all delightful and I enjoyed every single moment visiting with them.

Piety is the unconventional American heiress who comes to England to escape the machinations of a mother who is a parent in name only. How wretched and callous that woman is can only be appreciated upon reading her dialogue and viewing her actions. The author convinced me that the heroine was wise to run. Add in her evil, icky step-brothers and it’s almost like a twisted Cinderella story.

Trevor is a grumpy bug. His early life was not a picnic and now he’s doing everything he can think of to live as opposite a life as he knows how. On one hand, he’s honest, sometime too honest and that causes one of the conflicts later. And when he becomes less than honest, with the best possible of intentions, well, that causes conflict too. He doesn’t follow his heart and it’s almost his downfall. I liked Trever. I cracked up when he tried to tell himself, not to ask, not to make it his problem, not to look, not to want – but he always does and the results have him falling in love and lust with Piety even more. It was fun to watch.

There’s plenty of internal conflict that both Piety and Trevor have to work through but it’s the external conflict from a man that’s like a Greek mafia boss which really brings the tension and worry to a fever pitch. He’s a great addition because not only does he provoke drama and suspense, he prods the hero to do the right thing, even if it’s one of the hardest things he’s ever had to do. An effective evil villain brings out the white knight in the best of heroes and Trevor passed with flying colors – and a few flying fists. And a knife – can’t forget the knife because the author used it effectively and deserves a mention.

Some readers might think that everyone fell in love with Piety too easily, and their acting so protective of her so quickly and thoroughly was a bit unrealistic. I found her likability delightful and it made this story more upbeat, positive, a pleasure to read. I like to think that the marchioness’s ability to size a person up was razor sharp and she astutely determined that the heroine was worth her trust and sponsorship. Certainly I enjoyed her wit when it came to dealing with Piety’s horrid parent.

The Earl Next Door is truly delightful. Ms. Michaels has penned a winner with characters who are engaging and charming and a story that completely entertains. I enjoyed myself immensely and will not hesitate to recommend this novel to anyone who asks.

Caught in a deadly web of deceit, James must risk life and limb to save his charge from the lowest of cads-one who would force Lady Phoebe into a loveless marriage. But while they’re confined to close quarters for her safekeeping, Phoebe begins to see the tender man beneath the soldier’s hard exterior . . . and the possibility of a life-and love-she never imagined possible.

If ever there was a challenging point of view to write, none could be as daunting as writing from the perspective of a blind heroine. I commend Ms. Hoyt for penning such a convincing novel. Not only did I respect Phoebe, but I believed in her senses, her independence and her capabilities. That’s all due to the wonderful descriptive way in which Ms. Hoyt shows what and how Phoebe ‘sees’ in the world around her. It’s wonderfully done.

Blindness notwithstanding, the most dangerous thing to happen to the heroine was someone’s tenacity in trying to kidnap her. Even though it wasn’t’ meant to be funny, after a while I was amused because it seems that every time Trevillion or Wakefield were distracted, or thought the coast was clear, they were proven wrong and one or the other had to scramble and rescue her. Talk about action, suspense and enough intrigue to keep the pages flipping!

I liked how the relationship grew and warmed between Phoebe and James a/k/a Trevillion. I enjoyed watching James take matters in his own hands and the result is exactly what one would expect, no matter how he tried to delude himself. He was a goner. Eventually, they both were openly besotted with the other – true romance.

My favorite surprise was the smoothing over of troubled waters and the removal of a longstanding threat. It was bittersweet but it left me with a feeling of hope. It certainly played well into the plot because it showcased a depth of emotion and honor in the hero.

I enjoyed the dialogue, the mystery that surrounded Miss Dinwoody and her role, and meeting James’s niece. I liked the romance, the dynamics between Phoebe and her brother, Maximus, and the other secondary characters that populated the novel. There’s so much to like, except for the person who has a unique scent. That one is a whacko genius who reminded me of another villain in a series that liked to ‘collect’ certain somethings. It certainly made for effective conflict motivation.

All in all, Dearest Rogue has everything I look for in an engaging historical romance. This novel is so well done, it’s a must read. I’ve followed the series but this is a solid standalone read and I highly recommend it to new and established fans.
