The characters who work at the stables have their own distinct personalities and back stories. The protagonist, Cass, especially. I liked the unusual handicap she had, though I did feel its interaction with her love interest was a little corny and predictable. That said, the love interest came just how I like them – dark, dangerous, and with a heart that sets its sights on the right girl. You certainly won’t be disappointed by the bedroom antics – these characters love a hot romp under the sheets, and enjoy teasing each other with new and experimental ideas! The man here is definitely in charge, but the woman won’t take a stupid decision without complaint, or a fight. In fact, in this regard, she soon sets him to rights.

I enjoyed the small mysteries which were revealed throughout and felt these were well handled, but I did feel that the shapeshifting wolves that arrived late to the party could have done with more history behind them, and more to differentiate them. As it was, they multiplied the total character count and at times I found myself forgetting who was who! It didn’t help that on a few occasions I felt like I had missed a step in the plot. Suddenly a character was much happier around another character they were wary of before, or a conclusion was made about a small detail of plot that was easy to miss. This could be because the pace throughout the book was very high, and, therefore, smaller details were easier to overlook.

Readers should also be aware that there are some potentially trigger-worthy pasts discussed. Cass has a history of abuse and the romantic interest has also been manipulated but none of these acts take place in real time.

All in all, I would really recommend this book to romance and fantasy lovers. The weight is more towards romance than fantasy, but I can see that the novel is establishing a world for later development and using the lens of a strong romance to do so. For those of you who like to see different side characters paired off, the potential for that with this book is there in spades. A mythical past of the supernatural world appears to be being resurrected alongside this mottled crew of survivors, and I look forward to seeing it progress into a fantasy tale with worldwide implications for the supernatural community.

I must admit that I have mixed feelings about Saffron. While it is clear she has a good heart, I think she has a lot of growing up to do. She strikes me as childish despite her insistence on being treated as an adult. One passage describes her “stamping her slippered foot.” This action is more suited to a child throwing a tantrum rather than a young woman. I also wanted more emotional depth from Saffron. The Civil War was extremely brutal and Saffron and Zeke are tasked with digging up the remains of soldiers and bringing them back to be buried in cemeteries. This would have been a particularly gruesome undertaking, but Saffron doesn’t seem to be affected by it, or at least there is no evidence of it as I read. Despite these issues, I am happy to say that by the end of the story, I saw glimmers of the mature woman Saffron has the potential to become. I can’t give details without spoiling the story, but I will say that Saffron supports Zeke in two particularly difficult circumstances.

Zeke is an easy hero to warm up to. He in kind, generous, and always willing to help. He shoulders immense responsibility at a young age. When his brothers die, he returns to the family farm even though he never imagined himself farming for the rest of his life. He does it because his family needs him. Zeke is certainly an admirable young man.

While I believe that Zeke and Saffron have the potential to be a great couple, their relationship never really flared to life for me. Again, I must cite Saffron’s immaturity as the chief obstacle in my mind. Zeke is more rounded and has much more emotional depth. When I compare him to Saffron and her somewhat spoiled attitude, I have a hard time picturing them as a truly compatible couple. However, I will say that Saffron is determined to prove her love for Zeke and she does this by fiercely supporting him when a weaker woman would have deserted him. I believe in time that they will grow into a strong couple.

The Forgotten Debutante is a good book. Zeke and Saffron are sweet and their happy ending is certainly deserved. While this story is the ninth in a series, it stands alone well as Ms. Lower explains everything very clearly. Fans of historical romance might want to give The Forgotten Debutante a try.

But the plot and the characters I’d come to care about pulled me back. I really wanted to know how Gabe and Elle got their happy-ever-after and to be sure Jed got his comeuppance.

The back story, the intrigue, the undercurrent of unease, the action, and the romance were well woven together to create suspense on several levels.

The Wedding Audition was a quick, fun, easy, and enjoyable read. All the characters were believable and likable. They often made me laugh out loud especially the conversation between Annamae’s mother and grandmother outside the hoedown dance. The relationship between the main characters, Annamae and Wynn, progressed nicely with little conflict and made me feel all warm and fuzzy. I wouldn’t mind getting involved with a man like that. I particularly enjoyed their easy banter with each other.

I thought the plot was a bit predictable and a tad unrealistic but the characters made me look past all that. The suspense of Annamae and Wynn hiding out for different reasons kept me turning pages. The happy ending left me feeling overall satisfied. It was nice to read a romance book that didn’t stir any anguished feelings or over the top drama.

There were two external conflicts that haunted Annamae and Wynn individually that for the most part, worked. The final confrontation from Wynn’s plot arc was a bit anticlimactic because it didn’t deliver what the story led me to believe would happen. Even though It didn’t meet my expectations, it was no less entertaining.

On the whole, The Wedding Audition was delightfully cheesy, really funny and was well written. It’s a nice, simple, perhaps cookie cutter type plot, but it’s an enjoyable story to escape into. I was delighted by the chemistry between Annamae and Wynn and was happy with the conclusion of their romance.

Talk about a story that twists like a pretzel. Do You Want to Start a Scandal has to be one of the most surprising of stories because it’s not all like I was led to believe. This novel is full of red herrings and goose chases and I was perplexed for most of it because it’s a mystery. However, the means of sleuthing and the reasons for it are unlike any I have ever read and I found it kind of funny.

I don’t think it’s set up as a true mystery; the book is a romance through and through, and a good one. However, the intrepid heroine, Charlotte, is determined to solve the mystery of the garter because in doing so, she’ll be able to clear her reputation. However, as the story goes on, I’m not convinced that she’s convinced that it’s really her goal at all.

I liked Charlotte and her way with words. One of my favorite lines comes her speaking with the hero. She’s not supposed to like him, but what is a reader to think when she accuses the hero of having a “masculine lip elixir”? I totally snorted when I read that.

Another belly laugh came from the part when Charlotte’s mother tried to explain marital bedroom activities using vegetables and fruits. I had a fit of the giggles when the heroine turned the tables on her mom with a bit of creative questioning. I also liked that the heroine was not afraid to show the hero what it’s like to simply have fun, like when she started playing with his hair – the descriptions inspired more giggles. It’s Charlotte’s zest for life, optimism and sense of adventure that is her charm. She’s straightforward, vocal and amazingly sharp-witted. She’s an excellent foil for a serious minded, proper stick in the mud peer who just happens to live a daring and dangerous double life.

Charlotte is oil, Piers is vinegar, and when they mix, they create a spicy blend that flavors the salad of life so well that they simply can’t go back to being who they were before they met. Granted, Piers makes some spectacular blunders and makes me question his judgment, and Charlotte inadvertently gives the wrong impression to another lady of the ton, much to her consternation, and that makes her fallible too. They are not perfect characters but they are perfect together.

I think the only thing that was slightly over the top was Piers’ ability to find a missing bit of cloth that Charlotte desperately wanted found. The where and how of it seemed like an impossibility. Also, I really wished someone would have taken Edmund in hand. The kid was a menace. That child should have been in bed, sleeping.

When the mystery is finally solved, it’s done in a spectacular style with an eye-popping revelation. Somehow, I don’t think anyone in the vicinity of the great revelation will ever forget that night. Certainly I won’t. That scenario was a first for me and I credit Ms. Dare on providing me with a most unique and singular reading experience.

There is no doubt that Do You Want to Start a Scandal is an entertaining, engaging and romantic read. It can boast two strong characters, an interesting mystery twist and a seduction of the senses. There’s humor and clever use of quips and dialogue not to mention delightful descriptions to bring the romance alive for readers. It’s truly a story well worth reading.

This is the second book in the Rakes of Fallow Hall series yet this is a solid standalone read. The overall story arc is the wager between three men. I haven’t read the first book in the series and never once did I feel the lack. This is a fun and entertaining novel all on its own.

There’s humor, witty and fascinating dialogue, and just the right amount of emotional drama to keep a reader engaged page after page. The seduction scenes between Rafe and Hedley are spicy enough to keep a fan nearby just in case. My absolute favorite extravagant and romantic gesture comes from Rafe, he creates something that is so beautiful and unique that the heroine can’t help but believe with all her heart that he truly loves her. It’s actually quite swoon-worthy.

The villains of the piece, the external conflict, actually come from Hedley’s own family. Wow, did Ms. Lorret create some effective despicable characters! I would have turned into a harridan/banshee on Hedley’s behalf. In no way could I have resisted wanting to throttle them for the very act of speaking. Hear me growl.

The Devilish Mr. Danvers should not be missed by readers who enjoy Cinderella themed stories. This one does it justice because this time, the heroine has an active champion to woo and care for her, and through him, others of power who have her back. There are plenty of occasions to cheer for Hedley and Rafe and I encourage historical romance fans to not miss out. Grab a copy and enjoy the ride.

Ms. McQuiston has penned a marvelous story of intrigue, scandal, romance and adventure. The plot development is woven in a diabolical way and is directly tied to a couple of instances of light seduction and clandestine meetings between Mary and Geoffrey Westmore. West is a rake, a drunk and a wastrel, or so a reader is lead to believe in the beginning.

Here’s the thing – West is actually suffering from what we now call PTSD – and it plays an intriguing and pivotal role in the novel. I liked how the author used the hero to illustrate the many ways in can manifest in a person’s life. It provided excellent conflict and an effective means of connecting and being sympathetic to the hero.

Introverts can possibly relate to Mary because of her absolute love of books and her preference for a secluded garden amongst flowers to while away the time while immersed in a good mystery. I enjoyed watching the heroine emerge from her bookish solitude and into life. I was greatly entertained while watching Mary find out just how different a real life adventure is compared to what was written. Some of those revelations were shocking, amusing, or downright sexy.

The overall plot conflict, the ‘deadly conspiracy’, was a convincing motivation for the drama and momentum of the story and the author orchestrated it perfectly. It also served to showcase just how smart and clever Mary really was, and it provided West with the incentive to finally shake off his profligate ways and become the man he was meant to be. Watching the two of them become better, stronger people because of their being together was quite satisfying and romantic. I really believed that Mary and West were perfect for each other and their chemistry and combustibility when they were together proved it. That, of course, made reading The Perks of Loving a Scoundrel an even better read.

The Perks of Loving a Scoundrel has a story to tell that’s so fun that it makes a reader lose track of time. I can’t even truly impress upon a reader just how much I enjoyed myself as I watched West and Mary fall in love. Even the last final sentence that Ms. McQuiston wrote had me closing the book with a huge grin. Should a reader cheat and skip to the last sentence for a peek, they won’t understand the significance of that statement unless they’d read the whole book. It has MEANING. And, it’s wonderful, saucy and full of pure hope and optimism. Pick up your own copy of The Perks of Loving a Scoundrel and see for yourself why I thought this book so awesome.

I was so excited to read Diamond in the Rough because the heroine was a scrapbooker and owned her own store. The characters were believable, lovable, and the suspense was enough to keep the pages turning.

I really enjoyed passing my time with the story because it had a clever plot. However, as with all good books, you hate for it to come to an end, especially when the book ended with a surprise twist that I never saw coming.

For readers who are more about the story than the sex, Diamond in the Rough is mostly sensual with one scene tipping it over into the spicy zone. There’s no doubt the chemistry between Aiden and Gina works.

For all the strong aspects of the story, the rocky but interesting relationship between the heroine and hero, the suspense about the ranch thieves and the romance, there are a few things that prevented this story from being a really good book.

This novel felt like it was rushed, almost like the author had met her quota of required pages and had to quickly end it. There were loose subplot threads left unresolved that left me with more questions than answers, and my expectations of getting to know the hero and heroine a lot more were not met. I felt the storyline could have been more developed than what it was. I was a bit disappointed because I really liked most of the book and wanted to know more about what motivated Aiden and Gina than what the story delivered.

I would definitely recommend reading Diamond in the Rough to a reader who is looking to pass a couple of hours. It’s not the best book ever, but there’s enough entertainment value that made me glad I read it.

This is the fourth installment in the series An American Heiress in London. It is a story of Lord Denys Somerton and Lola Valentine (real name Charlotte Valinsky). Lord Denys Somerton is a son of an earl and member of the ton, while Lola was a dancer in a Paris when they first met. Their upbringings, their social status, their lives were completely different. But they fell in love (and lust) and became lovers. Only one day after a huge disappointment and a few realizations, Lola decided to leave Lord Denys without revealing the true reasons behind her decision. Fast forward six years and Lola is back in town. To make matters worse for Lord Denys, who decides to marry into his own social circle, Lola is his business partner now. So they are brought together again and they have to find common ground in order to cooperate and work together.

The way Laura Lee Guhrke builds the story is magnificent. Especially since it’s set in 1892 England, a time when social status played a great role in a person’s life and when people rarely married outside their class. The conflict and especially the resolution are done perfectly and believable. I enjoyed reading how Lord Denys and Lola fall in love again. The tension between them is so palpable and their rediscovered passion is so strong.

Lola and Lord Denys are amazing characters. Both his and her individual heartaches are painful. But my hearts goes to Lola a bit more because she had such a horrible childhood and she was forced to grow up quickly in order to take care of herself. She is one of those great, bold, brave and strong female characters that I like a lot and I cheered for her from the very beginning.

The only thing that this story can do without is love making scenes. They seem forced to me, like they are put in the story because they have to be there. Both of them occur near the end of the story. I understand their purpose, but I strongly believe that the story would be just fine without them. No Mistress of Mine is a story is about second chances, overcoming fears, letting go of the past only to finally be able to commit to love in the present, and attraction between characters is unmistakable even without love making scenes.

No Mistress of Mine is such an emotionally deep story that is worth reading. I highly recommend it to readers who prefer romance novels in general and historical novels in particular.

While it would probably increase your enjoyment of the book to have read the previous two books, it’s not completely necessary.  There’s character development and responses between the characters from this book that starts in the previous books, but this one was still enjoyable and understandable as it stands.

I did not get as fully immersed in the story as I would have liked, but instead I felt more like I was on the outside looking in.  That’s a result of the story having too much “telling” and not enough “showing”. That said, I enjoyed the story itself and could definitely see this as a television show or movie. It reminded me in tone of some of the space operas I’ve enjoyed in the past.

The plot line was interesting and held my attention, even though I did not connect with the characters as much as I’d hoped—it would be interesting to this reader to go back and discover what the war was actually all about in the beginning.
