SHAKE until a stuffy marquess and rebellious lady make a shocking discovery: the contents of their hearts are just alike.Take a sip. You’ll laugh, you’ll swoon, you’ll never want this moving Victorian love story to end.

How to Impress a Marquess showcases the hypercritical snobbery of “high society” in England in the late nineteenth century. However, it begins to sizzle and sparkle when Lilith Dahlgren and George, Marquess of Marylewick have to seriously deal with their unique relationship.

Lilith and George are about as far apart in their thinking as two people can be. Yet, both have been shaped by traumatic events in their younger years. George is all about responsibilities, duties, drudgery, orderliness, family, position and “proper” behavior—all childish things have been put away. Lilith is about art, freedom of spirit, and survival in a world where people have failed her time and again. Her natural compassion and joy for life make her an easy target for people who take advantage of her. These traits keep her in hot water with George much of the time, and he is the one who controls her money.

As the author filtered in bits of back story, my heart ached for those two. But Lilith’s “atrocious behavior,” according to George, made me laugh and want to encourage her. She can almost make stern George smile at times with her antics.

Lilith has a secret, special talent. She is the writer of “Collette and the Sultan” a serial story that all of London, regardless of class, waits eagerly to read week by week. She and her muse get her in a spot that threatens to break her heart—creating stay-up-late reading!

Some of the secondary characters like Penelope, George’s sister, Beatrice, Lilith’s half-sister, Lady Marylewick, and Lord Charles add sub-plots and depth to the story that makes How to Impress a Marquess remarkably good reading while giving the reader a glimpse of the political and social tensions of that time in history.

Compliments to Ms. Ives for a creating a compelling love story, beautifully written, with spicy but nice! .

Healing must start from within…

Desperate to reconnect with her half-brother, Emma Edwards takes her new medical training and secures a doctor’s job at the prison where he’s serving a sentence. But what she finds there is worse than she ever imagined…tough rules and even tougher men, gangs powered by drug money and corruption. Emma must find a way to keep her brother alive until he’s freed even if that means lying to the one man she should be able to trust…

Unless you find someone to share your pain…

Warden Maxim Chambers doesn’t believe a woman should be working in a penitentiary, especially one like Emma – a woman even a hardened man like him can’t get off his mind. He’s spent too many years building walls around his heart to let himself care about anyone. But when Emma is almost hurt in a prison assault, Maxim can’t deny his feelings for her. But what is the connection between Emma and the prisoner named Sam?

When secrets are revealed, danger and death run through the prison. Only the truth can save Emma and Maxim…if it’s not too late.

Song of the Blackbird immerses you in a whole new world – a gritty, violent world where things you have always believed turn out not to be true. It is a compelling story of sorrow and loss, of hope and second chances, and most of all, of the power of love.

Song of the Blackbird is a unique read that grabbed my attention from the beginning. Emma Edwards’ love for her brother caused her to sign up to work at the local prison when she could have been a doctor at any ivy league medical facility. I like how the book opens and grabs you from the first few pages. Suspense is introduced early on opening questions on how Emma becomes a doctor and how her brother Sam Morris ends up on a path less fortunate. And what secret is the mean and rude warden Maxim Chambers hiding?

I enjoyed this story and it’s array of characters. My first thought was there is a lot of medical staff who work at this prison. The author got all of the character introductions out of the way in the beginning and I wasn’t sure where the story was going to lead. I enjoyed the unpredictability of the story. The characters were developed and given realness. I am not sure how I felt about Emma at the start. She came across to me as dramatic in the sense that she went to the extreme to have contact with her brother, but then on the flip side I loved her commitment to family, to being the big sister and keeping that family connection with her brother. She could have written him off and lived her life without her brother and his unlawful antics. She took a stand and actually she risked a lot to let her brother know she cares and she was there for him no matter what. I enjoyed the friendship that Emma has with Kiley. Kiley was always offering her help and assistance and she didn’t judge or criticize Emma.

I enjoyed the quiet romance between Emma and Maxim. I like how the author built their relationship slowly and that their relationship brought out each others good. Maxim is displayed as a strong and hard man, but we come to find out why. I found the parallel lives of Emma and Maxim to be interesting. They both had a reason ending up working at the prison. They both had a life of events that brought them to this moment.

The story was always moving but I did feel that a few parts of it went kind of slow or could have been left out. I like the concept of the birds and how Emma took notice of the birds because this was something her brother enjoyed and a connection that they shared. The medical details, events and terminology incorporate in the story gave the story realness. The harshness of prison life was touched on but I am sure this is a lighter version of what actually happens. I think the author did a good job on touching on the roughness but still not making it an uncomfortable read.

The twist in the story I was shocked by and for some reason was truly hoping it was a dream. And the ending was a bit long, drawn out and overly dramatic; like the author didn’t know how to wrap up the ending or was trying to meet a page quota. The story was basically over with, the reader knows how it was going to end but the author was still giving details.

I enjoyed the story. This is one that I am glad I read. It is a kind hearted read; the ending isn’t all happy but you are left with a feeling that the main characters will be okay.

This is a unique read that I would recommend to a reader that is looking for a fresh storyline that contains love for family, romance and the harshness of working in the prison medical field.

Jill Shalvis always brings a story that captures and holds this reader captive until I read to the last page.  This story is about trust and letting go of the past.

Willa and Keane have a history, though Keane doesn’t realize why Willa is being almost rude to him when she is completely opposite with any other customer. What he does know is that he likes her, and she intrigues him. He picks up on the fact that he should know her but doesn’t seem to remember when or how he met her. In contrast, she seems to remember, in vivid detail, who he is and how they met and parted.

The secondary characters, like the people she works with are very interesting and worth the mention. They show a side to Willa that would not have been evident if these characters were not present. For example, Willa put Christmas decorations on the wall of the street where a homeless man sleeps. That told me a lot about her true character.

Maybe in the future books one of these secondary characters could star in their own story.

The plot is simple but it was how the story and the characters were portrayed and how it was written that held my interest to the end. I never got bored with their story and Ms. Shalvis didn’t overwhelm me with back story that could have slowed down the pace.

The Trouble with Mistletoe is a perfect read for a cold night and a coffee.

I loved the concept of Abbey MacMunn’s story and the opening certainly swept me into the tale. It has a great premise and fast pacing, fitting into a young adult or new adult genre, depending on how much sex is deemed acceptable, as there are full blown sex scenes within the book. The main character has all the seeds for a great fantasy read. A mysterious past, a dangerous faction out to get rid of her, and a handsome man (and his brother) on the sidelines.

All the components to make this book a fantastic read are there. However, it really didn’t work for me. The pacing was far too fast for me to believe the love story and the love scenes lacked real steam because of this. The characters were a little flat because more time was spent on their relationship than the pacing and conflict that should have been surrounding them in the first half. Instead of progressing the main fantasy plot, there was an attempt to further the protagonist’s sexual relationship, making it edgy by placing the ‘event’ in a location other than the bedroom, but this location has become somewhat of a tired trope and didn’t distract me from the lack of plot progression.

In addition, some of the locations in the book were disappointing. There was a stereotypical, traditional, drafty castle and a dungeon. I was hoping for something more. I wanted to know more about the characters the protagonist met, the world that she had become a new member of, and the people that surrounded her. I wanted her to react with more passion against the faction out to get her, to put up a real fight rather than be led through the motions. She becomes a passive character, protected by those around her, and more involved in the romance subplot than the main fantasy plot.

Of course, more ‘traditional’ fantasy tales can be really effective, and I certainly think this book would really appeal to the younger market due to the focus on a whirlwind romance. The fated, guardian angel style of romance and the unusual supernatural element to the protagonist will keep a younger (mature young adult to new adult) audience wondering what will come next. The book introduces a supernatural world I’m sure they’d be eager to get to know, and it would be an excellent gateway book to the wider genre.

Thack Lane has his hands full. For the past seven years, he’s been struggling to move on from his wife’s tragic death and raise a daughter all by his lonesome. He doesn’t have time for himself, much less a cheerful new neighbor with a smile that can light up the ranch.

Christmas spirit? Bah, humbug.

With Christmas right around the corner, Summer Shaw is searching for somewhere to belong. When her neighbor’s young daughter takes a shine to her, she is thrilled. But Thack is something else altogether. He’s got walls around his heart that no amount of holiday wishes can scale. Yet as joy comes creeping back to the lonely homestead, Summer and Thack may just find their happily ever after before the last of the Christmas miracles are through…

I believe in Christmas miracles and I love to read books that incorporate family, love, hope and happiness. I actually thought I came from a dysfunctional family until I read this story about Summer Shaw, the heroine, who opened my eyes to the fact that I’ve got a pretty good family. Both the heroine and the hero both have tragic past stories that broke my heart and yet because of that history I felt it made them perfect for each other.

I was glad the author shared their past history, not to depress me but because it helped me to understand why the characters made their choices. That history, shocking in an uncomfortable kind of way, is what helped me to develop empathy for all the characters. Well, actually not Summer’s mother. That character was despicable and the author did a great job of making me think unspeakable things about her. Summer’s mother kept you turning the pages just waiting for vindication. This part of the plot is what made it a bit suspenseful. The ending left me feeling justified.

Despite Summer’s past history I found it easy to relate to her because of her natural love for children and the need to be accepted and belong to a family. Thack, the hero, was written as a loving and devoted father to his daughter, Kate. The type of husband I’d want for myself and my children. Kate was an entertaining 7 year old. I enjoy stories that incorporate a bit of humor and make me chuckle, and with Thack and Kate, I had quite a few giggles. My favorite new saying, thanks to Thack is, “Sweet Pickles”.

It was a unique and interesting plot that is plausible. It moved at an acceptable rate which is reminiscent of something I’d see on a soap opera or on the Hallmark channel versus real life. True-Blue Cowboy Christmas was an enjoyable read that met my expectations.

For the past five years Elle Connor has been a preschool teacher by day and a demon hunter by night. Tagas pairs Elle with Patrick Holt to investigate the evil that has come to the city leaving mutilated young women.

This book offers good writing style in a entertaining format. It has a hint of action with a lot of romance. Elle and Patrick were put together to track and destroy a demon that could be Pyro. The story fell short on action and hunting demons but spent much time on the attraction between Elle and Patrick. The action and fight scene with the demon was very brief. The book spent more time discussing Elle and Patrick’s growing attraction to one another. I didn’t like how the story changed so quick from fighting and staking out the demon to sex and having a romantic relationship.

This was a quick read, not wordy, and it tells enough details and description to build a story that a reader can easily follow along. The characters were likable and both strong. Even though they live as humans they are willing to fight for a cause. Elle has a kind soft side to be a preschool teacher but then is able to handle her own when needed to fight demons. Patrick is set on not being a part of the war in fighting demons. He has his music career that he enjoys but he also is able to hold his own when up against a demon.

Dark Deliverance didn’t really deliver much action, but focused on the romantic connection between Elle and Patrick. I hope that this installment of the series was just setting up the relationship and that the next book will deliver more action and hunting.

If you enjoy a quick well written read that includes a fast paced paranormal relationship this is a story that you may want to add to your reading list.

As events drive Grace and David toward a battle of epic proportions, they must risk everything — their relationship, their lives, and even their souls — to defeat an enemy who wields unspeakable psychic power.

Intuition was an interesting and unique take on characters with psychic powers. I enjoyed learning about both Grace and David, however I admit to being a little lost for awhile as I tried to piece together what had happened in book one. While I was able to (mostly) understand everything eventually, I suspect starting at the beginning would have been a better idea. Therefore, I really recommend doing so for new readers. I’ll likely go back and read the first book myself, because I really enjoyed this author’s writing style and voice.

The story was well written with plenty of great description that clearly illustrated the characters and settings throughout. I could easily picture the people (though, actually, there wasn’t a lot of description of the two protagonists) and the places, and even the things they saw psychically. Grace’s visions and astral “visits” were incredibly vivid. I also really loved Sean…he was such a perfectly created young man, full of life and angst and goofiness. She nailed his behavior for his age.

I didn’t care for the “big secret” trope used to keep the two protagonists apart. I’m not really a fan of that, typically, and in this case, they’d apparently already been through a lot in book one and were engaged. If you’re going to marry someone, shouldn’t you be able to trust them completely? If not, then do you really love them enough to spend your entire life with them? That was one of the bigger conflicts in this story, and just served to annoy me, otherwise I likely would have rated it higher.

Still, as mentioned, Ms. Durand is a solid author. I’ve not read her work before, but I’ll be seeking out more. She’s skilled and her book was clean and well composed. Aside from my niggle, above, I really enjoyed the story and hope there will be a Psychic Crossroads, Book Three. Do yourself a favor if you enjoy this genre: start with book one and enjoy!

Can Phebe and Rafe cooperate long enough to save the town? For Phebe, it’s worth the risk. She’s determined to let go of past mistakes, get herself on the right side of the law, and have a future filled with love and passion.

Phebe was serving out community service by working for the old Cowboy and Western Museum. After a depressing confrontation with her loser ex-boyfriend, outraged and desperate, Phebe lays down on a cot in the exhibit and wakes to find herself in the Old West (1866). Rafe is the Sherriff and has come west after being a sharp shooter in the Civil War to try and start fresh. When Phebe finds herself stuck in this time, can Rafe help give her a reason for staying?

I found this to be a lighthearted, sweet and fun time-travel to the Old West style story. There were a few mysteries I wish that had been given explanation. Like how Phebe went to sleep in jeans and woke in an olden-style dress. Or how there was almost no commenting on Phebe’s very non 1866 style of speech (from calling the Sherriff an asshole to slang like “one way ticket to crazy town…”). While I completely understand explaining these sorts of things might have been difficult and possibly jarred the flow of the story, I really feel they could have added significantly to the story-line and enriched the world to my perspective. Partly by deepening the experience – how would a modern woman fare with the speech, style, food, hygiene etc of 1866? – but also by adding an extra layer of realism and complexity of the interactions between Phebe and Rafe. Plus it could have been downright fun to see much of this from Phebe’s point of view.

That said, I really enjoyed Phebe’s character – a modern woman and firecracker, struggling to fit into a time long gone. I also really enjoyed Rafe. I found him not just to be a traditional style, honourable and strong law man – but also quite decently open minded (particularly given the time period). I was thrilled that Rafe listened to Phebe’s thoughts and didn’t just expect her to be a shy, retiring woman. The sex was hotly written and fairly explicit. Nothing kinky or outrageous, but certainly modernly written and with no closed doors. With just the one sex scene (and some deliciously hot kissing here and there) I don’t feel this story is too sexy for most romance readers.

Toward the end of the story there’s a clear link-in with previous books. I hadn’t read any of the previous stories in this series, so that part of it didn’t mean as much to be as longer-term readers might find. Except for a few parts right at the end the rest of the story can certainly be well understood as a stand alone.

With interesting and complex characters, time travel back to Old West and returning to the modern era, spicy romance and all sorts of good and bad guys I found this to be a lovely, good read with plenty going on. I’m sure most readers will find something to enjoy in this fun and adventurous story.

To Love a Texas Ranger comes to life with action, cruel outlaws, a mystery treasure map, a mystery man who aids Ranger Sam Legend BIG TIME and a “throw-away” girl who says she “can’t be fixed;” yet brings light, reality, and confidence back to Sam after his near-death experience.

Linda Broday’s smooth weaving in of foreshadowing and backstory adds to the intrigue as Sam Legend, Sierra Hunt, and “Andrew Evans,” the mystery man, make the outlaw-infested journey to the Legend’s Lone Star Ranch. Over and above the outlaws threatening, the weather, wounds, and personal worries make life miserable for them. However, amid all the danger, worries and woes, love tiptoes in, puts down roots, and hangs on tenaciously regardless of the obstacles that look insurmountable—a beautiful love that is caring, sweet, and sensual with a touch of spice.

The unraveling of the man and map mysteries reach back to time-gone-by when human flaws and frailties set in motions the events ruling the main characters’ lives at the time of the story. This makes for reading that captivates.

There are other themes besides love, familial relationships, feelings of guilt, and low self-esteem that add depth to this story—a Prodigal Son theme, a “Greater love hath no man than this…” theme, and “…be sure your sins will find you out” theme; yet religious events are not a part of the story.

To Love a Texas Ranger is thought-provoking and compelling with a few twists that are attention-keeping. But, of course, the very best part is the true, pure love that rings clear with a “foreverness” quality.
