These social worker bear shifters give the term “mama bear” a whole new meaning! Bestselling author MaryJanice Davidson is back with this brand-new paranormal romance series featuring a foster care system for at-risk shifter babies and teens.

Werebear shifter Annette Garsea is a caseworker for the Interspecies Placement Agency. When a selectively mute and freakishly strong teen werewolf is put in her custody, Annette has to uncover the young girl’s secrets if she’s to have any hopes of helping her. And not even the growling of a scruffy private investigator can distract her from her mission…

Bear shifter David Auberon appreciates Annette’s work with at-risk teen shifters, but he’s not sure if her latest charge is so much a vulnerable teen as a predator who should be locked up. All that changes when he, Annette, and her motley band of juveniles find themselves dodging multiple murder attempts and uncovering a trafficking cartel that doesn’t just threaten the kids, but risks discovery of the shifters by the wider world of homo sapiens.

They’ll fight the bad guys but maybe along the way stop fighting their attraction to each other.

Bears Behaving Badly is the first book in a new series and it sets up a literary world that isn’t so unlike our own. Except of course, there’s a hidden community of shifters. Bad guys are still bad guys and foster care kids still need someone watching out for and fighting for them.

The element of foster kids as were-shifters was a definite draw for this reader. The fact that one, Caro, is described as ‘selectively mute’ had me wondering about her story. I knew it wouldn’t be pretty but I didn’t see the direction the story would take and that’s a good thing. It wasn’t cookie cutter lit.

A major theme or thread in the story deals with child trafficking. If that’s a sensitive subject, be forewarned. It’s handled very well but it’s there.

The dialogue is pretty funny, clever really, but what I thought the author did especially well was to make the actions of the characters, while in human form, fit their inner were-beast. The werefox are quick and nimble. The bears are protective and strong. The prey animals are meek. Loved Nadia’s fierceness! And Pat is…something different. Pat added some serious color to this novel.

I really enjoyed watching David and Annette’s story develop. They both start out in denial outwardly but totally on board, inwardly, with admitting their attraction. I could see right away it wouldn’t take them long to give in but not without bumps and bruises along the way. Someone is out to kill Annette’s charges and this mamabear isn’t playing around.

Pop culture references are always a win with this reader and the story is chalked full of some of my favorites. There’s also a decent sprinkling of Gen Y and Millennial speak. Having teenagers at home helps to decipher.

An exciting foray into the paranormal with a well built story and a mystery to solve.

As an incentive, they’ve given him a maiden sacrifice/bride, a dark-eyed beauty who’s just as determined to seduce him as he is to return home in one piece.

While she’s less than thrilled to be traded like a chicken, one thing is certain. Dax is the man in her dreams…and she’s hell bent on making them come true. Or her people may die.

The sixth book in the Guardians of Light series, this one focuses on Dax. As you might have guessed from the title, he is betrayed and sent far away in a magic bubble. What he finds there will change his life but only if he can survive it first.

I love this series, I really do. They all are standalone stories and yet also still manage to be interlinked. The focus is definitely on Dax and Maili but Dara and Loren, plus others, play a big part in it too. The story is fast-and-perfectly-paced, each chapter leading onto the next without any wasted words. I am hopeful part of the story is a pre-runner to the next book but I will just have to wait and see.

I have tried to think of something ‘bad’ to say, just to keep my review balanced. Unfortunately for me, I just can’t think of anything. I think the characters are fantastic, whether you are meant to like them or not. I couldn’t wait to finish this book, just so Dax and Maili got their HEA but at the same time, I didn’t want to finish as I didn’t want their story to be over.

This is such a great series and I really can’t recommend it highly enough. For any fans of fantasy romance out there, give this a try and I’m sure you won’t be disappointed!

Draper Rollins would be better if people weren’t giving him such a hard time.

The police chief of a small Pennsylvania town faces considerable criticism on several fronts. His estranged wife harps on him to make more money and live in better conditions. The tiny police department is decimated with injured staff; the borough council won’t hire any new police officers, and the town’s lady mayor complains about his leadership style. She also is critical of him in their intimate moments-something created out of loneliness, which Draper deeply regrets.

When a double murder rocks the town, Draper’s aggravation increases ten-fold. He initially thinks the responsible person might be someone he knows-likely a colleague.

Things get worse when people connected to the lawman disappear under suspicious circumstances. Draper realizes he must push harder to prevent further deaths. He doesn’t realize the danger and lifechanging implications that come with getting to the truth.

Knowing someone for decades doesn’t necessarily mean you know everything about them.

The dialogue was well done. I appreciated the fact that it was written in such a conversational style. All of the characters seemed to be people who were pretty casual in their daily lives. It was common for them to jump from one idea to the next or to share a sentence fragment as their reply to a question or statement. This fit the overall one of this piece nicely and was a good decision.

With that being said, the character development could have used more attention. There were such a large number them included in it that none of them had enough time in their scenes to grow as individuals. It would have been nice to either focus on a smaller number of them or to have a longer book so that they could have more scenes to work with. This was something I particularly noticed with the female characters whose development tended to be even more stunted than their male counterparts.

This story was filled with plot twists that I enjoyed discovering. Woodward Heights Borough, where it was set, was a community filled with folks who tended to have known each other for decades if not their entire lives. These deep roots made for all sorts of interesting developments in what people knew about each other, what they kept hidden, and what they pretended like they weren’t aware of it. This made for great twists and turns in the storyline and it also felt quite accurate of small town life is really like in my experience.

I’d recommended Double Swerve to anyone who likes small town murder mysteries.

But it wouldn’t hurt to find a guy who doesn’t know a thing about her father’s felonious past; one she can give her heart to and trust it won’t come back to her battered, bruised, and broken.

This book is the embodiment of what I look for in a romance book. It has all the feel-good components I hope to experience when reading a love story. I’m an emotional person and enjoy connecting with my characters on a personal level. The writing techniques in It’s a Trust Thing really brought the story to life. This isn’t my first Peggy Jaeger novel and it will definitely not be my last.

I didn’t get a chance to read the first book in the DotComGirls series before I discovered It’s a Trust Thing, so I’m secure in saying that It’s a Trust Thing can be read as a standalone. I have yet to be disappointed in a Peggy Jaeger novel and I’m pleased to share that this story, like the others, more than satisfied me.

This particular book was a great deal of fun to read. My attention was captured from the beginning and carried onto the end. I lost count how many times I laughed. I really want to share how surprised I was with the unexpected plot twist near the end of the book.

I often talk about book boyfriends but rarely talk about having favorite heroines. Nell Newbery makes my list of favorite heroines. She was a kindred klutz like me. She was also a heartwarming character as I enjoyed reading about her overcoming her trust issues. Nell’s character was a role model for following your dreams despite adversity.

Charlie Churchill doesn’t win the book boyfriend award but he gets an honorary mention. I really loved him, and even though I didn’t get much of his inner thoughts and feelings, I found it wasn’t necessary because actions speak louder than words. Charlie clearly demonstrated his love and passion for Nell.

Together, Charlie and Nell made a compelling romance. They were an inspiring couple as they opened their hearts up to each other.

I don’t have any qualms about recommending this book.

Sarah has no idea what it means to be drawn into the Beck orbit but she’s about to get a crash course in wooing, Beck style.

I first met Beck in the book one of this series. I have to say, by the end of that book I was seriously crushing on the whole Bro Code crew. And not just the hot guys that I hope get their own books eventually. I love parents and friends and whole quirky town that I found myself in with Wyatt and Ellie’s story but by the end, I was craving Beck’s book. He’s just so precious and seemingly oblivious. But he’s not really oblivious. He just looks for the upside while reconciling that the downside is out there. He doesn’t ignore the bad in the world around him, he tries to fix it.

Sarah didn’t have a chance of not falling for him. He would adorably geek her into loving him like he did me. I really like how she describes him. “This guy loves his family, and food, and life, and he makes everything brighter.” BTW, the whole “loves food” part…he’s like a hobbit but adorable. That’s all I can say.

This was a fun book for because of all the pop culture references. If you love some Buffy and believe that Firefly got the shaft, this is the book for you. It owned me with all the silly rom-com antics and great dialogue.

Beck and Sarah have great chemistry. They get each other and therefore compliment each other. She provides stability while knowing what he deals with on a daily basis. Beck has a lot of stuff but none of it, not the cars the houses or the money, truly matter to him. It’s a means to an end. He gives her strength and a platform to be brave. To rise about the things that sent her into hiding.

I’m not sure how I was so lucky to find this new author to me but I glad I did. She already has a pretty healthy catalog of stories that I can’t wait to really dive into while I wait for the next installment in the Bro Code to come out.

Readers looking for an honestly fun and yet satisfying rom-com need to give this one a read. Go read Ellie and Wyatt’s book, too. There’s a whole lot happening there that segues very nicely into Beck and Sarah’s story.

As tempers flare and passions deepen, they have to decide if their love is strong enough to shatter the cynicism and misconceptions of what it means to be each other’s fairy tale ending.

Greta is astonished when she attends a meeting being held to introduce an important new client and it turns out to be Jacob – with whom she had a brief afternoon fling but was still vivid in her memories. Neither Greta nor Jacob want to make waves professionally, but can they sort out their complicated personal feelings?

I found this steamy and sensual full length novel was surprising and engrossing. I thoroughly enjoyed the authors’ tone and writing style and found it both modern and easy to read, quickly finding myself deeply curious about how Greta and Jacob could resolve their history and build a solid base to begin their relationship again. Each had incorrect, pre-conceived notions about the other and it was amusing to watch them both have to adjust their snap judgments of the other and pretty much start from the beginning again.

The romance moved quite slowly and I both enjoyed this and found it difficult. I love a story where I can really get to know the characters first, understand their motivations and reasons, plus it’s always lovely to see them interact together without all the drama and extra complexities that romance always brings. But since Greta and Jacob had already been intimate in the past it felt a little stilted to me how they tried to wind their relationship backwards and be platonic together, just colleagues and pretend their memories and intimacy didn’t exist. It felt weird and a little unrealistic to me, so in that sense the slowness of the pace of their romance just never gelled or worked properly for me.

I found the intimate scenes between Greta and Jacob to be steamy and well-written, they were descriptive and passionate, but not over the top or too provocative. I thought the author did a good job showing the complexities of Greta and Jacob’s relationship. Each of them had sensible reasons behind their actions but – particularly in the beginning – neither were very good at expressing or conveying themselves to the other. I was a little disappointed that they both tended to make assumptions and react without clearly understanding where the other was coming from – that felt a bit silly to me, personally. But I was pleased particularly once they both began to see the other wasn’t as bad as they had originally assumed they both tried hard to communicate better and understand what was really happening.

For the most part I thoroughly enjoyed this steamy and fun romance, finding the winding and complicated road Greta and Jacob traveled together to be interesting and a great read. There were a few clichés – Greta’s ex and the smarmy co-worker who wanted to get in her pants both felt a little like plot-devices to ramp up the competitiveness and tension – but I have to admit they worked a treat to make the story feel more complicated. I enjoyed watching both Greta and Jacob have to work to mend and then build their relationship and blips on the path are a part of what life’s all about.

With modern and interesting characters, a good cast of strong secondary characters and plenty of twists and turns I found this to be a fun and interesting read.

After escaping the guillotine in her native France, aristocrat Noelle de Vallon takes refuge with her aunt in Sussex. But when their plans are betrayed, a man from her past steps out of the shadows to save her. Too bad he’s the last man on earth she ever wanted to see again.

Years ago, Richard, Lord Boltwood’s, plan to marry Noelle was foiled when his ruthless father shipped him to the Continent to work in espionage. But with the old man at death’s door, Richard returns to England with one final mission: to catch a spy. And Noelle is the prime suspect.

And how can Richard catch the real culprit while protecting the woman who stole his heart and won’t forgive him for breaking hers?

Can Richard and Noelle learn to trust each other?

Noelle and Richard have quite the past. They fell in love and promised to marry. Unfortunately, circumstances tore them apart leaving Noelle feeling confused and betrayed. Two years later, Richard returns to find Noelle heavily involved in smuggling and in danger of being arrested as a spy. Richard desperately wants to help her, but Noelle, still angry at being abandoned, is determined to make her way on her own. However, Noelle may need more than her own willpower to escape with her life.

Richard and Noelle are certainly an intense couple. Their wills are evenly matched, they have great chemistry, and they enjoy teasing and bickering with each other, or at least they did at one time. Richard comes back expecting to pick up where they left off, but Noelle is understandably angry at being left behind without explanation. Rather than being entertaining, their bickering had a bitter taste. I found myself wishing I could have gotten to know them before their forced separation. I think they would have been a fun couple to watch.

Richard and Noelle’s major issue is trust. They both expect loyalty and trust, but weren’t willing to be completely honest with each other. So many of their problems could have been cleared up in a single, honest conversation, and there were many opportunities to have that conversation. Unfortunately, they stubbornly push ahead, each convinced they know what is best. Consequently, they cause each other a lot of unnecessary heartache. I found this frustrating. As a result, it was hard for me to relax and enjoy their relationship. Richard is determined to keep Noelle with him even though it is clear she is upset and has misconceptions about why he left her. Yet, Richard professes to be confused by Noelle’s behavior. I find this very hard to believe. I know the misunderstandings are meant to add tension and suspense to the plot, but I found them all rather unsettling.

Despite these issues, I am pleased to say that Richard and Noelle eventually find their way to a happy ending. After everything they have endured, I believe they will be a powerful couple and will be more open and honest with each other in the future.

Looking for a historical romance with a strong-willed couple and plenty of emotional turmoil? I recommend giving The Smuggler’s Escape a try!

But instead she’s falling for Jack, bonded by the baby who needs them both…

A book written by Lauri Robinson is pretty much a guarantee for me that I am going to have an enjoyable read. I’m pleased to share that Baby on His Hollywood Doorstep wasn’t a disappointment. In fact, I’m excited that it is book one in the series Brides of the Roaring Twenties. I don’t know why I count but this happens to be my seventh Lauri Robinson book.

Baby on His Hollywood Doorstep was an excellent introduction to a new series. I considered the plot and setting to be rather unique and it therefore piqued my interest to want to read the next one.

Another reason I enjoyed this is because of the cast of characters. I developed a kinship with each one. Helen, the heroine, was born into a life that she had no choice in the matter. As life typically goes, there are often turns of events that we have no control over. We all have the choice to let it define us or not. Helen struggled with the cards life dealt her. It was heartwarming to read how she chose to rise above it. It happens, of course, with the help of others, mainly the hero, Jack, and as expected Jack had his life struggles too, but together they became a united force.

I truly loved this book and have no qualms recommending it. However, I have one bone to pick. Without giving any spoilers, I felt that there is a scene omitted. If so, it’s one I would have preferred to have been in on because Helen has a rather significant meeting/conversation with a significant person and I was not privy to it and I felt I should have been. I learned of it and heard what was said after the fact because she told Jack. Prior to this meeting there was a previous confrontation with this particular person where things were said that were pivotal to the plot. There was an agreement and, well … I can’t say anymore other than I would have liked to have heard her and this particular person have this second conversation. Perhaps it was done on purpose so that I would feel the same anger as Jack did when he learned what Helen had done behind his back. He forgave her faster than I did. Perhaps if I was in on the conversation then I would have been more forgiving. I kind of understand her reasoning but I didn’t like feeling left out. That’s the only major hiccup I experienced while reading this story.

I was entranced from beginning to end and was genuinely entertained. I’m thrilled that I already have the next book sitting next to me waiting to be read. I encourage others to join me in experiencing this new reading adventure, starting with Baby on His Hollywood Doorstep. The future for this series looks promising.

I love a man who loves his family and children. Devil’s background story earned him lots of points with this reader. His dead father, not so much. The author lays out both Willa and Devil’s motivations for why they are how they are and it was both believable and instantly had me cheering for them to find love. Their first face to face meeting is both fun and a little volatile. I couldn’t wait until round 2.

The ruse that they come up with, to keep her reputation in tact, was a little unbelievable for me. It relied heavily on his servants not knowing the truth. As Willia had been in his home before on interview for the governess position, I wasn’t sure how they would suddenly forget just because she returned in the guise of his betrothed.

Outside of that mild crit, the story flows really well. The dialogue and scenery are descriptive and well in keeping with the time period. I felt like I was there. I also was drawn into how unjustly people can be judged for actions outside their control. Books that make me feel something are good books.

There’s a sinister element to this story that I had to see resolved as soon as the villain of the piece was introduced. Hated him on site and looked forward to his imminent demise.

I love the concept of this series of books and I’m excited to see several more planned. The Hellion Club is made up of the byblows of upper crust. The fact that these girls who are sent to Darrow School to be hidden away are going to make such a huge in-your-face’ explosion in “polite society” tickles me to no end. I can’t wait to see who makes a splash next!

I’ve read other books by Joanna Shupe and have never been let down. I wasn’t this time, either. This book plugs right along, the writing is well-done and kept me invested throughout. I’ll be reading more by this author.

Yes, there were times when I thought Florence was a bit above her station. Women had some freedoms and she tends to go higher than she should be. But that’s what made her fun. Okay, sometimes it made her petulant and a tad irritating, but she knew what she wanted and was not going to let anyone tell her no. I liked that. Then there’s Clayton. He’s just as much of a piece of work. He’s doing things that aren’t quite square, yet he’s not doing it for ill-gotten gain. It’s a tad trite that he’s the casino owner with the heart of gold, but he kind of is. The chemistry between him and Florence is off the charts. I liked each time they got together.

If you’re looking for a book with rich characters that might annoy you one minute, make you love them the next and ultimately stay with you, then this is the book you’re looking for. Recommended.
