You know how some novels can take a week to read even though it’s really good but your progress is kind of slow because it’s heavily detailed, wordy or intricate and you have to spend time letting it gel? Well, have I got news for you. Forget that happening in Ms. Duvall’s latest Immortal Guardian adventure. Finishing the book was a compulsion that overtook even the interest to eat. Seriously, the balance of dialogue, descriptions and action, never mind the wonderful love scenes between Dana and Aidan – all of it was sheer perfection. The writing was strong and evocative, the plot suspenseful and gripping, and the characters are those a reader can fall in love with. There is nothing slow about this book. Blade of Darkness left me breathless; every single feeling and emotion a story can evoke is brilliantly brought to life with an impact that left me clamoring for more. I don’t know how Ms. Duvall does it but she consistently delivers a high impact, thoroughly engaging story in each installment that follows a gifted one finding love with an Immortal Guardian who never thought to find true love. It’s the best hook in the world and this author does it justice.

I lost count as to how many times my heart was in my throat during the sword battles as Aidan and his brothers fought against the insane vampires. Drama and gripping suspense shot through the stratosphere when it became apparent that Gershom is back and has a few new tricks up his sleeve. It’s shocking and yet so typical of a Super Villain, a classification of which he more than earns – he defines it.

Only once does a reader get into the villain’s head and it was enough to convince me that Gershom deserves to be taken down. For the most part, the book stays in the point of view of both Dana and Aidan and that’s fine with me because there is no question they are the stars of this book and their romance is unconventional to say the least.

Secondary characters abound but they were more than welcomed. Practically every one of them is someone I’ve fallen in love with before in past novels. They do a wonderful job of supporting Aidan and Dana – more than this humble review can reveal. My heart hurts for Seth though. And David. When will it be their turn is what I’d like to know. In this novel I get to see Seth experience extreme emotion which makes him even more alluring as a future hero. I just adore his role and how he really loves the people under his command. They’re family and that theme of family shows itself in surprising and rewarding ways throughout Blade of Darkness.

I usually don’t talk about book covers but for this review I will mention just a couple of things. First, the guy is yummy, that’s a given. But look at his eyes! Finally someone has paid attention to some of the characteristics that make a hero so special. In this case, an Immortal Guardian named Aidan. The cover for this novel rocks!

There is so much more I want to say, to share, to comment on because Blade of Darkness.takes place in a world that is rich, vibrant, and at times almost real, that even when I reached the last page, I didn’t want to leave. Also, I’m guessing here, but Aidan’s ‘as you will’ seems like a nod to the Dread Pirate Roberts in The Princess Bride – a movie I absolutely adore. As he says to Princess Buttercup, ‘as you wish’. I wish Ms. Duvall much success because I want her to continue writing about this world until every Immortal Guardian finds love, until everything Seth fought for and protects is relatively safe, and maybe, just maybe the two lone warriors we all respect will find love too.

Blade of Darkness is a must read, a must have and a book worth the space on a reader’s keeper shelf. Dana and Aidan’s story is extra special and wonderful and I’m thrilled that such a misunderstood hero finally finds a woman to love and cherish. What more could a reader wish? I’m a very, VERY happy reader.

Marie and Odin are both strong personalities, and they certainly have the potential to be a formidable couple.

Abby is probably my favorite character in this romance. She strikes me as a young, intelligent, down-to-earth woman. She’s very relatable, and I enjoyed watching her trying to find her way in a world full of supernatural beings. I never warmed to her relationship with John. I found him annoying and insecure. I’d really love to see Abby and Egon, a werewolf, explore the spark of attraction between them. A relationship between a human and a werewolf would be complicated enough, but by the end of the story, it is revealed that Abby is about to experience life altering changes. I sincerely hope that Abby and Egon don’t walk away from the possibility of a wonderful relationship.

Reborn is a thoroughly enjoyable paranormal romance. The pacing is excellent, and I’ve grown to care about several of the characters. I look forward to reading the next installment in this series.

Xin’s character development was fascinating. He was a transgender man who had recently begun questioning his gender identity yet again at the beginning of this tale. Given that he was also a single parent and the brand new owner of a vineyard despite the fact that he knew very little about growing grapes or making wine, there was plenty of room for him to evolve as a person. I deeply enjoyed seeing how Xin made decisions about everything from what his gender identity was to running a vineyard to adjusting to life on an alien planet.

There were pacing issues. Some scenes were fast-paced while others were much slower. Either writing style would have worked quite well for this tale, but I found it hard to switch between them because of how often the narrator moved from one style to the next. As soon as I adjusted to a slower form of storytelling, the pacing would pick up again with another bombing or nearby battle.

One of the things I liked the most about this story was how beautifully it described the characters and setting in such a compact number of sentences. Ms. Chng weighed out her words so precisely that she was able to show me exactly what everyone looked and sounded like in an incredibly short amount of time. The same thing can be said for her descriptions of the house, wine cellar, and vineyards. My impressions of them were strong and clear the first time she told me what they were like.

I’d recommend Water Into Wine to anyone who has ever wondered what a large battle between many spaceships would be like from the perspective of a civilian living on the ground.

The characters are three-dimensional and it was so easy to fall in love with them. Kevan is a tough girl on the outside, but so fragile on the inside. She is a fighter and I rooted for her through the whole story. Mason is typical alpha, but while he goes for what he wants, he is also so gentle toward Kevan. The relationship between two of them is emotional from the very beginning. It is so obvious that they are head over heels in love with each other from the start. Only, it took them quite some time to realize that. The plot is also amazing; Kevan’s and Mason’s relationship is put in the context of the music world, business deals, promotions and life on the road.

If you are looking for a highly emotional and intense contemporary romance Beautiful Crazy is a perfect story. Read it; it is absolutely amazing!

For me to stay up until 1am to finish the book knowing I have to get up at 6am for work tells you it must have been a good book. I hate when I do that though because then I’m very tired and miserable the next day. However, whenever I thought of the book it would make me smile and I knew then, it was worth it and I’d do it again.

I’m such a sucker for this type of story. I can’t reveal why because the synopsis only says “Sherrie discovers that Curtis is keeping secrets from her and his biggest secret of all will change everything.” This “biggest secret” is my favorite kind of plot. Kelli A. Wilkins’ writing style gave this classic love story a fresh look and appeal. I also enjoyed the setting in which the story was set. There were many little things that just gave this book the extra added touch. I enjoyed the implementation of the cats. I did notice the clever connection of the book title incorporated into the story.

Sherrie Parker, the heroine, wasn’t perfect. She cried a little too often but I loved how Curtis, the hero, would comfort her. I fell in love with them immediately when they first met because the entire situation had me laughing. At times Curtis’s secrets were annoying and I just wanted him to tell Sherrie but I understood why he couldn’t. I do need to point out that their relationship was definitely spicy. I started to sweat a little bit.

I got a little nervous in chapter eleven. There was a big bump for me. I almost couldn’t get past it. I still scowl when I think of it. Sherrie did something with someone that I thought was the most stupid thing to do,  the worst decision she could have made. I don’t think anyone in their right mind would have done what she did. Fortunately, I had strong feelings towards Curtis and curiosity in other matters so I was able to get past that plot quirk.

For the most part the story was aesthetically pleasing to me from start to end. Trust with Hearts was a heartwarming story that I thoroughly enjoyed. I would honestly recommend this book, especially to fans of cowboys and country music.

His Little Lanie is a small town contemporary romance retelling of the classic fairy tale, The Little Mermaid.

The premise of the story was alluring and it definitely had some uniqueness to it. The synopsis intrigued me and I was further pleased with the writing style. Apparently this is the second book in a series. I didn’t know that until I finished it therefore it’s safe to say that it can be read as a standalone. However, I am curious to read the first book in the series since I did grow fond of the cast of characters.

The hero in this story was Eriksen. My opinion of Eriksen was that he wasn’t quite developmentally appropriate for his age. He had this youngness about him. He was divorced, a pilot and a man but something was off. I had the same feelings regarding the heroine, Lanie. They just had this innocent sweetness about them. It didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the book since I was able to rationalize that their relationship was unique to their story, and that they shared a past history which only makes sense if you read the book, then you’d know what I’m talking about. I did laugh quite hard when Eriksen entered the water for the first time. That was a bit unrealistic but hilarious.

The author does tell the reader that this story is a contemporary romance retelling of the classic fairy tale, The Little Mermaid. I can see the connections threaded throughout the plot and rather enjoyed the cleverness. Especially the “tail” detail. That was smile provoking. A genuine feel good moment.

The synopsis said “Sometimes we just need a mental break and we’re looking for that comfort read book to take the day away.” That was the perfect description. I did enjoy the entire story from beginning to end. I consistently turned the pages looking forward to the happily ever after at the end in which I wasn’t disappointed.

I enjoyed reading His Little Lanie while I was home recovering from a minor surgery. It was the perfect read to distract me from my worries. Thank you Keri Ford for this unique and entertaining read. I do recommend other readers to pick up this book and enjoy this sweet fairy tale.

He is a history professor at the University of Virginia. He is also an only child and a nerdy guy with a great body. His field of research (it can be easily said obsession) is Thomas Jefferson. Due to the direct link between Fairfield Orchard and Thomas Jefferson, Jonathan approached the Fairfield family and asks their help. Although both Amy and Jonathan are reluctant to have a relationship, sparks fly and they cannot deny there is something between them.

This was a fast and enjoyable read for me, although it would be even better if the story could have focused more on the romance part and less on Amy trying to rebuild her life in her hometown. I like to read about developing relationships between a heroine and hero so for me I found that the romance part was a bit rushed in this story.

The author used some common situations that are already seen in romance novels in order to push Amy and Jonathan’s relationship to the next level. In a way, some of the interactions and development of Amy and Jonathan’s relationship was predictable. On the other hand I absolutely liked how the author developed other aspects of the story, for example, Amy’s relationship with her twin brother and former friends, the atmosphere in her hometown, and especially the secondary characters. All of the secondary characters, from Amy’s twin brother Tyler, to her neighbor Miss Jablonsky, are done in great detail. They are realistic and three dimensional. During the read I already started guessing as to who the next potential couple might be.

At Fairfield Orchard is worth reading. Although I wish there were more interactions between Amy and Jonathan because I liked their chemistry, I enjoyed this lovely and sweet story.

She marched to the beat of her own drum. They agreed they weren’t each other’s type. Yet, just like the title says, they were better together. I wished though, that Aiden wasn’t so critical of Tallulah’s eclectic ways. She did state several times not to call her a certain nickname but he kept doing it. I think the nickname eventually grew on Tallulah but it distracted me from bonding to them as a couple.

The plot was good. It wasn’t unique but it was enjoyable and it flowed at a medium consistent pace. I consider the plot to be the fixings and I think there could have been more ‘fixings’ added. The synopsis says the “family’s personal and financial problems threaten to overwhelm Aiden.” That plot thread could have been thicker with more suspense or intensity, instead it felt flat. I don’t want to spoil anything but I was anticipating “more”. I understand Better Together wasn’t written for the suspense genre but there was a strong build up to one, and then it fizzled.

The writing style was quite good. It didn’t take long for me to get captured into the story and each page held my interest. I was intrigued to see how Aiden and Tallulah’s relationship developed. I wished the heroine lived in a bit more private or “uninterrupted” environment because certain things happened that took away a little bit of the chemistry for me.

Side characters existed but they weren’t very well developed. They had a thin layer to them. For a book that has two hundred and ninety eight pages they could have been a little bit more established and threaded throughout the book. There were plenty of opportunities to implement more emotion and drama and the author didn’t take advantage of that.

The book had a nice conclusion with all the threads tied up with a single knot instead of a double knot. Aiden and Tallulah did have their happy ever after ending. I’m not left with any unanswered questions. I was entertained for a few hours. I would recommend this book for others to read. It was a fun, quick and easy read.

Throw in a new way of life, a hero she’s not sure she can trust and finding out she is not a lone wolf after all, totally makes Dreaming of a White Wolf Christmas worth taking the time to snuggle down and get comfy with while reading.

I liked Candice and Owen’s romance. I liked how they met, how they courted and the dialogue that flowed back and forth between them. I enjoyed seeing how the heroine fit in with Owen’s small pack and I adored all the kids and their antics. One of the kids is of course extra mischievous and ends up having a special place in Owen and Candice’s heart. Mine too, for that matter.

The conflict is mostly character driven except when it comes to the heroine proving her authenticity. That’s where the external conflict shows up and it provides the suspense and drama needed to keep the plot moving. There are plenty of surprises and interesting twists so this story avoids being a cliché. Ms. Spear sure had a challenge ahead of her in trying to fit all the action in during a rushed but believable timeline that raced towards the final showdown and satisfying conflict resolution. It was well paced, used effective descriptions and engaged my emotions.

I know the title mentions Christmas and that it’s a really big holiday, but the season isn’t the focus of the story. The special time is used more to wrap up the happily ever after as it’s the perfect reason for a celebration of family, of hope, of dreams come true and the start of a wonderful future. It has a feel good, optimistic and charming ending all tied up with a beautiful, big bow of romance and love.

Dreaming of a White Wolf Christmas is a sweet romance that pulls the heartstrings because both Candice and Owen lost the lives they had before the ‘big change’. But, in each other, found happiness and joy for the life that’s ahead of them. I’m quite confident that their happy ever after is actually the beginning of a wonderful new life adventure for both of them. I’m a very content reader.

I’ve reviewed hundreds of books for Long and Short Reviews over the last five years. This is the by far the best one I’ve ever reviewed for them.

The character development was amazing. Lana was an incredibly complex woman whose personality could never be condensed to a few short sentences. Everything I learned about her was doled out gradually between and during her various iHunt assignments, That only made me more curious to find out more about her. I especially loved how much time Mr. Hill spent exploring her many reasons for signing up to be a monster hunter. Every single one of them taught me more about her as a person while they were also pushing the plot forward in all kinds of exciting ways.

Speaking of the plot, the pacing of it was so beautifully relentless that I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the page. The blurb gave an excellent introduction to this universe, but there were many new conflicts and characters introduced later on in the storyline that were somehow even more fascinating than the original idea of freelancers being hired to kill monsters.

One of the many reasons why I gave this story the highest rating possible is how much attention it paid to real-world issues. The characters dealt with all kinds of frustrating situations when they weren’t actively fighting monsters: dealing with deeply prejudiced people, running out of money well before payday, experiencing truly terrible customer service, and so much more. Some of these scenes made me laugh, while others made me wince. All of them developed this world so thoroughly that I honestly forgot I was reading a piece of fiction. It was like listening to a friend talk about her terrible or wonderful day instead.

The romance was handled perfectly. Not only did the characters involved in it have an unbelievable amount of chemistry, they also genuinely liked each other as human beings. Their strong friendship made me eager to see if they could turn their platonic feelings into romantic ones. This part of the plot was also a refreshing break from the often intense fight scenes.

iHunt: Killing Monsters in the Gig Economy was phenomenal in every single way. If you can only spare the time to read read one more novel this year, make it this one!
