She Wasn’t Cut Out for His World…

The realm of the fairies might be unbelievably beautiful, but its people are notoriously treacherous. Raised among mortals, Taryn hoped to avoid her fairy heritage her whole life. But now she must cross over to Annwyn and appeal to the King to pardon her exiled parents, or they’re sure to die. And to get to the King, she’ll first have to face the Lord of the Hunt…

He Can’t Imagine Life Without Her…

Verden, Lord of the Hunt, is sworn to serve to King. But the moment he sees Taryn, the attraction is instant and devastating. How can he not help the beautiful, brave young woman who refuses to bend to the will of the court? Yet the power in Annwyn is shifting, its magic failing. No matter how much he may love Taryn, the Hunter knows that abandoning his duty could bring down the mortal world forever…

Taryn is part fairy but was raised as a human girl. She has no interest in fairies or their world. The only reason she’s daring to enter their territory is try to get her father pardoned. Now if she can just stay out of trouble long enough to do it…

Ms. Husk’s stories all have impossible romances. Her characters love women and men they can’t have. That makes the story more challenging, adds more tension and makes you wonder just how she’s going to work it out.

The author has set this story in Annwyn, a fairyland filled with the King and Queen, their courts, and their games. Taryn has to charm the King and ask him for her father’s pardon; the King is the only one who can grant it. Unfortunately, the Queen believes the King killed her lover and she’s very vicious, as well as being jealous. Taryn doesn’t want to sleep with the King or make the Queen angry, but she hasn’t much to barter for her father’s freedom.

If that dance isn’t dangerous enough, she’s allowed the Lord of the Hunt to steal her heart. He’s too high in the fairy order for her to have any chance of a relationship with him. He’s smitten with her also and sneaks her out of the fairy world to the other side where they can actually talk and make love. Of course, it’s just a matter of time until someone sees them…

I found the fairy world that Ms. Husk drew fascinating. She also depicted the war among the fairies very realistically. The King has to step down, but the Prince has to marry before he can succeed him. In the meantime, the fairy world is deteriorating. Take a bunch of mean fairies, let them see the world ending, and it’s not nice for anyone to be around. You can feel their fear and Taryn fears about letting them loose in our world, just like you would if you were there.

It’s a rough, tough world with little room or desire for true love. I was rooting for both characters and the author finds a way to skillfully grant their desires without loss of face or life. I’m impressed. I enjoyed this read and look forward to the next book in the series. The Prince is going to try to woo his lost human woman back into his life as his wife. It’s not going to be easy.

Douglas Allen needs a home for his aching heart…

Douglas Allen, Viscount Amery, hates having arrived to his title without knowing how to manage what few properties he has. Guinevere Hollister is a distant family connection raising her daughter, Rose, in rural obscurity and stewarding the estate they live on. At the urging of mutual family, Douglas reluctantly puts himself in Gwen’s hands for lessons in land husbandry and discovers beneath her prickly exterior a woman of passion and honor. Yet despite the closeness they find, she will not marry him.

Guinevere Hollister needs a champion…

When the powerful Duke of Moreland arranges an engagement between Gwen and his heir, Douglas knows the marriage is not what Gwen wants. In Douglas’s eyes, Gwen deserves to make her own choices, even if she chooses continued poverty and disgrace over the love Douglas offers her. Douglas will take on their family, the meddling duke, and Gwen’s own lonely, stubborn heart to ensure his lady’s happiness.

Douglas Allen, Viscount Amery rescues Guinevere (Gwen) Hollister’s little daughter Rose from a terrifying situation; but Gwen sees little else to recommend him. He has no finesse, no charm, never smiles, but he is Rose’s champion and Gwen senses she can trust him.

Maneuvered into close proximity to each other by well-meaning relatives, Douglas and Gwen rub along cautiously as they spend days inspecting Linden, a property Gwen’s cousin Andrew Alexander has offered to sell to Douglas who is the former brother-in-law of Andrew’s wife Astrid. They inspect the estate on their own as the steward, Mr. Tanner is mysteriously away—a little side story.

Gwen is an excellent steward for Enfield, a property of Andrew’s that Gwen has called home for many years. Since Douglas knows nothing of farming and estate management Andrew recommends Gwen to acquaint Douglas with the ins and outs of keeping an estate prosperous.

The mystery of Gwen’s single mother situation and her reluctance to be away from Enfield is like a carrot on a stick that kept me searching for clues and foreshadowing. I must admit I was astonished at how this all played out—quite a twist in the story. The revelation late in the story ratchets up the tension and threatens to swamp Gwen. Only with the help of family and Douglas is she extricated from the high-handed manipulation of self-absorbed powerful adversary.

How both Gwen and Douglas lose some of their cautious demeanor and begin to thaw is a one-step-forward-and-two-steps-back process. Each of them has kept his or her own counsel for so long; they hardly know how to open up and really communicate on a personal level. Before they get to a sexual relationship, they’ve come to know and respect each other on many levels. Their understanding of each other’s needs and recognizing the deep-down loneliness they’ve both endure is a strong, poignant element in the unfolding of events.

Douglas’ understanding of Gwen’s fear of a man’s touch and how he helps her find her way back from a traumatic experience so she can love and be loved is breath-holding, sensual and sweet.

Many of the secondary characters have peopled previous books in the “Lonely Lords” series. However, DOUGLAS: Lord of Loneliness stands alone beautifully with a memorable love story that is laced with lots of family love and meddling along with humor, and mores of their time in history. Best of all the reader gets the satisfaction of seeing emotionally wounded characters heal and flourish when true love moves in to stay.

Grace Burrowes, with her exquisite style of writing, has given the reader another superb love story set in one of the most interesting times in English history. Captivating!

Every woman dreams of marrying the perfect man-handsome, thoughtful, strong, and sensitive -and Aria Kavanagh believes she’s found the ultimate hero in Chief Petty Officer Daniel McCullum. But being a U.S. Navy SEAL wife is a serious challenge, especially when the missions are putting more than their love in the line of fire. Can they jump the hurdles and handle the daily rigors without falling apart? Or will the pressures attached to the handsome uniform have them both questioning if their dedication is worth it? Every moment matters when the only thing that truly lasts is love.

Sometimes the happily ever after doesn’t come the way you expect, but it’s exactly what you need.

Anne Elizabeth writes a crisp story of two people muddling through married life. This book starts with the wedding. There isn’t the getting-to-know-you lead up like in many books and I found this refreshing. This might not appeal to readers who want a long courtship. But don’t let that keep you from enjoying this book.

Aria and Dan are typical people. They have their ups and downs and Ms Elizabeth shows them with startling realism. I rather liked that these people weren’t perfect. That said, there are moments where I wished she’d have been a tad stronger as a heroine. I wanted to see her handle the issues of being the wife of a SEAL with a little more strength, but I could relate to her feeling thrown off the deep end. Dan is very much a SEAL (I know, you wouldn’t expect less). He’s focused and alpha. I wished I could’ve seen more of him outside of his job, but sometimes a man is married to his work.

This book is on the sweeter end of steamy. That’s fine. I liked the change in pace. Not everyone has sweeping, crazy hot sex. I connected with the characters and am looking forward to more from Ms Elizabeth.

When enemies seem to be lurking around every corner it can be difficult to know just which one is attacking you now. Dominic’s job as an head enforcer is to protect his king at all costs, no matter what. Yet he doesn’t  necessarily  know who he is protecting the king from, and then in walks Tatiana who just makes his job more difficult by being his one and only mate.

Tatiana is similar to many of the other hybrid Amoveo in this series. She doesn’t have a great understanding about life as an Amoveo an fears what it may mean for her. Yet, she cannot avoid the call to heal animals no matter the cost to her. So she tampers her fears and does what she needs to do to help heal the kings horses. I have to say that Tatiana is very much the calm within a storm. She is willing to put everything aside to do what it takes. I have similar traits so this was something I can certainly identify with and made me have a better appreciation for her character. I also loved that she stood up for herself, and was able to hold her own. This was important because the Amoveo world is so male dominated.

Dominic’s plight when it came to Tatiana was amusing at times, and at others I really felt for the guy. He is use to having to be the strongest and calculated. Whether it was in the military, or has head enforcer for the Amoveo. Dominic knew what he had to do to get the job done no matter the cost. Tatiana sure did throw a monkey wrench into his life. She creates unpredictability to his life, that he is just not happy about. I loved getting to experience him trying to figure out where his life would lead him now that Tatiana has changed everything.

This story has the complex plotline that I have come to expect from author Sara Humphreys. The Amoveos have to deal with both Amoveo and human enemies from various groups looking to eliminate them. This certainly adds depth to the story, as well as some excitement. On top of that the story evolved some additional twist and turns, such as mated couple problems, and traitors that left me on the edge of my seat. I have recommended previous stories in the series to others, and will continue to do so because Unclaimed was everything I have come to love about the Amoveo world.

Hattie Blackhouse is the only child of famous Egyptologists, and when they go missing, she travels to their latest excavation in ancient Thebes only to discover that she is attracting interest from the French, the British, and the Egyptians, who believe her the reincarnation of a long-dead princess.

In the second book in the Regency series, the heroine finds herself in the crosshairs of factions who are vying to support or thwart Napoleon’s latest attempt at world domination—and she unknowingly holds the key.

Hathor Blackstone chafes at her confinement in Cornwall, while her parents explore tombs a world away in Egypt. When the unthinkable happens, Hattie must travel across the globe. When no one is as they seem, who is a girl to trust?

In Daughter of the God-King, we meet Hattie Blackstone, daughter of the famous Egyptologists. She has spent her life in isolation in their home in Cornwall. Now coming of age, she grows weary of visiting neighbors and having everyone else tell her what her parents are up to. With much moxie for a proper young woman, Hattie and her companion Bing find themselves in the middle of a great mystery. Hattie’s parents have disappeared and it is up to her to find them. As Hattie discovers the best laid plans in life are often foiled, she and Bing narrowly escape and find themselves on a ship bound for Egypt.

Hattie and Bing travel across the globe, dodging disaster at every turn. The trip is fraught with politics, intrigue and a very dashing young man known to Hattie as Daniel Berry. When Robbie, Hattie’s childhood friend appears on scene, the tension ratchets up as Hattie realizes it is not the dashing Mr. Tremaine she is longing to be with, it is the secretive Mr. Berry. Politics and spy games become more complex and Hathor is plagued by a nagging sense that there is no one she can really trust; except for her earns while companion Bing and her new found love, Mr. Berry.

This Regency style novel is perfect for fans of the Parasol Protectorate series, Indiana Jones and anyone who loved The Mummy movies. Author Anne Cleeland takes you deep inside the complex inner workings of a post Napoleonic world where there was danger at every turn. Would the gentleman try to escape his exile and make another play for power? Are Hattie’s parents dead? Were they somehow involved in a caper that would shame the family by its treasonous implications? Hathor begins to question every fact about her life and when an unexpected mystery is revealed, the consequences may be more than she can bear. Mr. If-That-Is-His-Name Daniel Berry is a character that matches Hattie for wit and keeps her at the top of her game.

The humor in the novel was wonderfully handled. The fact that Hathor is the daughter of two Egyptologist parents and hates anything to do with the subject while her companion Bing is fascinated with it caused a fit of giggles now and then. The sexual tension between Hattie and Daniel was lightly done, just skirting what was proper for the most part, with a couple of flaming kisses thrown in for good measure.

One of the other things I enjoyed about this novel was the emersion in the Regency period and fresh, new feeling about the archeological digs. Not only for the politics and spy novel aspects, but the mannerisms and speech of the characters; every aspect of the time comes through. From the hushed atmosphere of the tombs to the double innuendos during a card game, I found myself enchanted and eagerly turning the pages. I would not hesitate to read another book by this author.

All and all, Daughter of the God-King was a book that at first started a little slow, but after I understood what was happening, picked up rather quickly. At the onset, there was a lingering feeling that I was missing something, but as the story developed, that went away. Hattie is an unforgettable character with enough spice to get her through any situation and I admire characters that can find ways to get around anything. Hattie’s entire world gets thrown on its head, but she comes up swinging. Daniel is a sexy spy-hero and I couldn’t think of a better match for Hattie. When one door closes, a window opens and Daniel is there holding it open with open arms.

If you are a fan of Regency period novels with a penchant for Egyptology then this book will be just the thing.

Sometimes there’s a thin line between what makes an an erotic romance versus what is erotica, and Restless Spirit falls somewhere in both categories.

It’s a very sexy read, with a woman beginning to find her own way after leaving an abusive relationship, and finding not one but three very different men who want her.

The sex is frequent, and although it’s well written sometimes it seemed to be added to a scene just for the sake of having it there. I thought the dialogue and description were great but somehow because of Tuesday’s frequent need to have sex with whichever man was in the scene, it never allowed me to know her as a person and connect with her which I would have liked to have done as I progressed throughout the story.

Like an erotic romance, it does have a happy ending. Depending on what you like, and if your preference leans toward a romance with lots of sex, this might be one for you.

When Valin meets the vampire Gabriella, she awakens within him something he thought long buried. But as he watches Gabriella’s need for vengeance threaten to drag her down into the same dark hell that he’s living, he knows his only chance at redemption is bringing her out of the dark…

Valin and Gabriella (Gabby) have a way of teetering on the line of good and evil more than any two people I have ever read about. Their ability to balance right there is also what makes them such good warriors against the cause of good and evil.

Valin has already suffered the loss of a paired mate and child, so the idea of losing another is just something he cannot even fathom. That is why when he meets Gabby he vows to do whatever it takes to keep her alive and by his side. However, will this need to protect Gabby save his soul or lead to his demise?

Gabby is a woman after my own heart. She has suffered a lot of tragedy in her life, which has not destroyed her but instead created a determined woman who can take on the best of them. Unfortunately, it has also created a need for revenge in her that can cloud her judgment at times. She learned a long time ago to rely on no one but herself. I have suffered from the consequences of not trusting or allowing those around me to assist even when I needed it so I can truly understand Gabby.

This story is based around the ultimate battle of good versus evil so Lucifer and God are the commanders sending out their armies to protect their interests. While this is a factor in the story the author does not bog it down with too many religious concepts so no matter one’s religion you should find this story entertaining. The conflict also really adds depths and intrigue into the development of Gabby and Valin’s relationship.

This is a story that I enjoyed and would continue to read the stories in this series. Even though I have not read the previous stories I was easily able to pick up and follow the story line, and no I would enjoy the subsequent stories in this series just as much as I enjoyed Prince of Shadows.

As she marches over to confront him, she huffs about Society calling him “Lord Perfect,” quite sure he is still a seeker of diversions and without anything to recommend him.

Hal has earned his reputation fair and square. As the second son who always disappointed his parents, he seemed to work at being a wastrel until he bought a commission and went to war. As a Captain of Foot Guards in Spain, he learned some hard lessons and came to have a strong sense of justice and compassion. The viscountcy is onerous to him. He seeks diversions again. But Lily sets his life on a new course, one he had not anticipated.

The secondary characters have a side story or two of their own. But, for the most part, they serve to highlight the conflict between Hal and Lily. Eloise, Hal’s sixteen-year-old sister is finding her way into the world of eligible men. Her antic are entertaining yet touching as she finds what she imagined a man to be and what he is in real life. The stiff Earl of Ivorwood and the scientific, rather absent-minded Gregory Donwell have her young mind and body on full alert.

The side story about Nate Becket and his family’s connection to the Viscount’s family brings suspense and a touch of mystery into the mix of things. Nate and Lily have a unique arrangement that keeps emotions astir.

Gentlemen Prefer Mischief is most satisfying because the reader is in on the secrets for the most part that gives one a feeling of being right there in the thick of things.

The love scenes belie Lily’s saying she doesn’t trust Hal. The intimacy they share from Lily’s first kiss to the ultimate in lovemaking is precious and unique.

Emily Greenwood’s delightful characters that are so well developed and the humor that threads through the plot make Gentlemen Prefer Mischief captivating; plus,it gives the reader points to ponder about how childhood experiences shape one’s life in later years. Good reading!

He vows to stay until the baby of her now-dead husband is born and will help her stand up to her in-laws.

Astrid fears the worst about what will happen to her and her baby now that her brother-in-law Douglas is the Viscount of Amery. She does not know this stoic, unsmiling man; plus she had been so devalued by her late husband, she fears for the future. She does not know that Douglas, who did not want the title, is wrestling with family debt due to his dead brother Herbert’s excesses and poor management. In addition, Douglas’ mother and younger brother Henry hate the economic constraints he’s placed on them. They make his life a misery. Most of all he finds Herbert had almost depleted the funds in Astrid’s widow’s portion—had in essence stolen his wife’s money.

Astrid goes to visit her sister Felicity, Gareth’s wife, to escape the oppressive Allen family atmosphere. As her family rallies around to see to her well-being; secrets, questions, and malicious manipulations create tensions that keeps one turning pages.

During all of the doing, Andrew and Astrid agree to an affair, but the ”elephant-in-the-room” is always there—Andrew says he will leave even though he despairs of doing so. How their relationship evolves so they can find their happy-ever-after is compelling. There are amazing love scenes, but also the reader gets to see a giving love grow strong, an unshakeable friendship put down lasting roots , and family love that is unconditional.

Many of the secondary characters I’d met in previous “Lonely Lords” series books. These characters enrich this novel and add a continuity that I enjoyed much like catching up with old friends. Two of the most interesting of these characters is Gwen Hollister and her daughter Rose. They add a new dimension to the story and serve to show how the constraints of “Polite Society” can play havoc with lives. David Fairly, Astrid and Felicity’s brother is another that grabs one’s attention. He is rather a mystery man that gets things done. He comes and goes in their lives in an elusive manner but seems to always be there when needed most.

Grace Burrowes’ vivid, well-developed, flawed characters, plus her way of weaving their lives together and her exquisite writing style seem to get better with each of her “Lonely Lords” novels. Her unique ability to make each book stand alone yet connect to the other books in the series amazes me. ANDREW; Lord of Despair engages the reader’s emotions and senses from start to finish—a joy to read.
