Ravenna soon discovers that the only real threat Sutherland poses is to her heart. But will the proud Highland laird ever forgive her when he discovers the woman he loves in an English spy?

Two people who probably wouldn’t have met otherwise do and with explosive results.

This is my first book by Victoria Roberts, but it won’t be my last. The writing flows well. Once I started the story, I couldn’t put it down. I needed to know what would happen next. The characters are intriguing and well, it was a pleasant change of pace to read this book.

Ravenna is a strong heroine. She doesn’t take guff from anyone. I liked that. She’s not the stereotypical damsel like in some historical reads. She held her own with him, but the way they came together was very good. It was like she was meant to be there, even if she didn’t initially think so.

Ruari is an interesting character. He’s all alpha, all the way. He doesn’t take guff from anyone. I did like how he could become putty in Ravenna’s hands, though. The tension between Ravenna and Ruari is palpable. I rooted for them to get together from the first meeting. They sizzle on the page.

There were twists, turns and events in the plot that I didn’t see coming. I’m looking forward to more from Ms Roberts. Well done.

It was nice to see the two willing to fight for the love that they have a chance at.

So far I am enjoying this new series. This story moves quickly and I was pulled in to not only the romance but the action as well. It was also nice to see the couple from the first book in this series make an appearance in this book. Paige Tyler has built a wondrous world around these characters and certainly has me wanting more.

Nicole Powell is a sassy Southern girl who has officially sworn off cowboys after a spate of bad seeds-until her father’s death sends her to Montana and into the arms of a man who seems too good to be true. Her instincts tell her to high tail it out of Montana, but she can’t resist a cowboy with a slow hand…

Who wouldn’t want a handsome cowboy to come to their rescue? And that’s exactly what happens to Nicole, (Nikki), when she leaves her purse on the plane. Enter Wade, attorney, and cowboy who not only gives up his seat on the connecting flight for Nikki, but helps her find her place to stay while she gets duplicate ID. Put aside the coincidence that he just so happens to be the lawyer handling her dead father’s estate, and you have the beginning of a story about a knight in shining armor.

I really liked Wade’s character and not only because he’s a man with old fashioned values. He comes across as caring and tender while at the same time as being a tough as nails cowboy. He’s got problems of his own, one being the struggling family ranch and a bad relationship with his brother Dirk who lost a leg while serving his country.  Sometimes I thought Dirk wasn’t all bad and I was waiting to see where all his hurt and anger stemmed from. He’s a great secondary character, as are all the others in Slow Hand.

Nikki was also likeable, and throughout the book I hoped she wouldn’t let this cowboy get away and would realize that he and Montana were her future. And of course, the setting was perfect. The ranch and the small town setting complimented this story perfectly. And though the plot was a bit predictable and particularly new, it was solid and enjoyable.

If you like Western settings, and can’t resist a guy in a cowboy hat and boots, I’d say this one’s just for you.

Playing housekeeper means plenty of time in close quarters with the sexy cowboy. Soon, they’re in each other’s arms, but personal demons keep Jared from admitting he’s falling in love. When he finally sees what was right in front of him, it’s going to take more than a lasso to get her back into his arms where she belongs.

Yes! To Love and to Cherish is another western historical love story that is a keeper—another Leigh Greenwoods novel that shows his artistry with words.

But, there’s a new man in town, a rancher, Jared Smith, recently out of the army and now furnishing beef for the fort near Cactus Creek. He’s not well-known; however, he shows up to offer his condolence when Noah Spencer, the banker’s brother and Laurie Spencer’s husband, dies. Jared does not go unnoticed. His handsome, eagled-eyed appearance, his sensuality, and his air of self-possession and purpose cannot be overlooked.

Even though, her body quivers when she sees him, Laurie, the young widow, has no interesting in ever having another husband. First controlled by a strict father that makes her ashamed of her body and later controlled by the man her father forced her to marry when she was seventeen, Laurie thinks she will now be independent since her husband died. She can make her own decisions and control her own life.

When things do not work out as Laurie thought they would, she finds that she and Jared Smith have the same enemy. They conspire so they can each get what they want. The obstacles, risks, and conflicts mount up to what seems like an insurmountable level.

Intriguing, compelling events paced just right, subtle character development, a touch of humor, and a hint of secrets kept this reader turning pages. The subplots are like icing on a cake. They enhance the total flavor of the story. Best of all, the love story sparkles with both tears and laughter.

Many of the secondary characters grab the reader’s attention. Fifteen-year-old Steven, Jared’s nephew, won my heart. Then there is Norman Spencer, the banker; he really raised my hackles. He is an antagonist that lives up to the title.

Leigh Greenwood’s Cactus Creek is inhabited with flawed characters (some good, some not so good) whose lives are entwined and tangled. The reader gets to vicariously share in their resolute efforts to build their lives in Arizona after the Civil War AND also gets to enjoy a memorable love story.

To make matters worse, the reason Lord Somerset fell off the roof in the first place is a secret that threatens to upend all their lives.

Mia Marlowe’s marvelous magic with words involves the reader in A Rake by Any Other Name from page one. Two strong personalities square off in a way that made me smile. They see the world from very different points of view. That the heroine, Sophie Goodnight, is no shrinking violet is quite clear. No pampered young lord is going to intimidate her.

Family machinations and social pressure of the ton have Richard Barrett, Lord Hartley, boxed in a corner that seems impossible to escape. His life is no longer his own. He’s come from flitting around the Continent spending money to shouldering the heavy financial burden of saving the family estate. The first thing he sees on his arrival home is some unknown young woman viciously pruning a rose bush his grandmother had planted years ago. Even worse, she shows no obsequiousness toward him. His friend Lawrence Seymour is amused but Richard is furious, which seems lost on the mutilator of his roses.

The symbolism of Sophie cutting away the dead and entangling canes of the rose bush so, hopefully, new growth can flourish sets the tone of her role in the unfolding drama that takes place at Somerfield Park. The old ways that worked at one time to keep the estate viable no longer get the job done. New ways must be embraced and she helps Richard find a new way, even though his elders are sure it will taint the family name. Her sharp mind and sharp tongue cut to the chase often as she and Richard spar.

Many characters that seem minor have much to do with how the plot unfolds. How Ms. Marlowe weaves them in keeps the reader totally involved in the many levels of doings at Somerfield Park. The reader needs to keep them all in mind, from the lowest level servant girl to the high and mighty Antonia Pruett that Richard planned to marry.

The changing times of the early 1800s in England, with tradesmen getting wealthy and the peerage finding it hard to maintain their holdings while struggling to hold on to a social structure that shows signs of decay , sets the scene and the temperament for A Rake by Any Other Name. There’s intrigue, secrets, evil intent, deception, humor, and, of course, the love scenes sizzle. EXCELLENT READING!

Mike McCauley had his soul mate for a precious time before she died giving birth to their son. She left him with the best boy a guy could want, so why is everyone playing matchmaker? He’s sick of it . . . until he meets Delilah Webster.

For some reason, the foul-mouthed, tattooed mechanic sets his motor running. He sees the loving woman buried within. But the closer they get, the more the pain of past wounds throws a monkey wrench into a future he’s not sure he can handle…

After reading this novel, the hero wasn’t the only one needing a cold shower. This story has scenes so hot, I swear the pages scorched my eyebrows.

What to Do with a Bad Boy is finally giving me what I want, Mike’s story. For such a fussy and fastidious housekeeper and father of such a cute little rascal named Colin, I never dreamed he had such sexy and kinky depths hidden in that big hunky body of his. Guess it took a woman with a hint of “bad girl” to get the hero to open up which means Del is the perfect woman for him. Ms. Harte made sure of that.

The internal conflict that holds Mike back is the memory of his first wife. Yes, he loved her and still does but he needs to move on. Even he thinks so. But he’s got this ‘ideal’ that he believes he must have and having any feelings or lust for Del seems so wrong, it scares him. The interesting thing about lust is the power it can have. In this story, it slams into Mike so hard he can’t help but ponder, wonder and salivate over ‘what if?’ That is the chink in his armor that Del slips through and the fun begins.

Del is quite a mix of brash, confident, mouthy and hidden deep inside, sentimental and purely feminine. She’s definitely on the rough side but that works perfectly when she bounces that attitude of hers off of Mike. I also like the fact that she’s capable, smart and willing to step out of her comfort zone for friends. There is a lot for a reader to like about the heroine.

The basic plot is focused on Mike and Del getting over their hang-ups in order to fall in love. Mike’s path is onerous because he has to truly, finally and completely reconcile his past with his present. That pivotal moment was a gut punch. It was well written, dramatic and powerful because it was full of intense emotion and pain. What a great scene. Del has to learn to compromise and trust that for once, she has the real deal, true love, and Mike isn’t simply going to go ‘poof’. She has a hard time with that transition of expecting failure to expecting success instead.

One thing about this book is the hotness of it. Once Mike realizes that Del can take anything he can dish out, he taps into sexual yearnings he’s always had but buried deep. With Del, he can be himself and once he realizes that, readers are in for some heat inducing scenes. Seems he has this thing for tying Del up and giving her orders and even spanking her when she’s ‘bad’. For Del, a tough and suffers-no-fools kind of gal, giving Mike that kind of power over her is a heady trip and one that shocks her because she had no clue she wouldn’t mind a take charge kind of guy to that extent. Throughout all the amazing sex scenes, Ms. Harte did something fascinating. She incorporated dialogue, both internal and external, throughout their mating. The author wrote them in such a way that a reader can’t simply skim over them thinking, ‘oh, it’s just another sex scene’. If they do skim, they’ll miss the growth of Mike and Del’s relationship. It’s interwoven so tightly it gives meaning to the sex and makes every single moment thoroughly readable. No mistake though; have the ice handy for a few of them.

The one character I could have done without was Grace. I understood why she was included in this story, she was a conflict foil. Still, she annoyed me. The fact that Mike’s mom acted the way she did annoyed me too. I expected better from her for some reason and the fact she kept on her stubborn blinders about Del just got my goat.

Colin was his usually rascally self. I enjoyed how the author got into his head and allowed me to follow his reasoning as to why Del would be the perfect mom for him. What he did to try to orchestrate it was adorable. All through the series, he was a lovable character and Ms. Harte made him shine in this novel.

I think this book could be read as a standalone but I wouldn’t recommend it only because I believe that the reading of it is more powerful after reading the previous three. Ms. Harte has been slowly seducing readers about Mike and Del for quite some time. If a reader wants the full effect, read at least the previous two novels. They’ll be glad they did.

Reading What to Do with a Bad Boy is like the perfect summer vacation – everything that could make the experience the best it could be, a reader gets. Mike and Del’s story is a home run and closes the series with a winner of a story. The romance is wonderful, the sex is deliciously wicked and all the characters provide that family feeling of continuity and connection. I definitely recommend this book to romance readers, especially those that like their books extra sizzling.

When the fate of England falls in the Duke’s hands, he enlists Penelope for a new plan—they announce a sham engagement in order to flush out the traitor. But as the stakes get more deadly, and their feelings more real, will they discover that love is the most dangerous plot of them all?

Love, mystery and a plot to overthrow the king is just a taste of what this story has to offer. As Penelope and James try to figure out if they are capable of love, let alone loving one another, they seem to have to fight the elements as well and danger at every turn.

Penelope was by far my favorite character in the story. She was not what you would expect from a woman during the time period, in all the right ways. She is determined, independent and smart. She will not accept a life of dutifully following behind a man even if the man is the Duke of Marchford. She would rather a life without a husband that to be pitied or wed for the wrong reasons. Unlike her peers whom seem to throw themselves at the poor Duke. I can understand why he wants her as his bride so badly as she is truly a catch.

James has everything a man would want of his statue. Yet underneath it all he is still a lonely child abandoned by those who should have loved him. It has created a rash, sensible man who fears he is incapable of love. While he may not realize it, to me it was obvious he was much more capable than he knew. It was not his words that showed but his actions that clearly he cared for Penelope fondly and would do anything even take a bullet for her. Unfortunately for him, he had to prove just how willing he would be taken said bullet on more than one occasion.

The plot line in the story is extremely dynamic and entertaining. I love the mystery behind the spies. Not only do you not know who they are, but their intentions are keep secret until the very end. This long with the love line, and interesting array of sub-characters made this story truly entertaining, and at times I did not want to put it down. While I am fairly new to historical romances this one is definitely a stand out to me and I would highly recommend you reading it.

It’s Not Easy Being Right…

Vanessa Campbell is a CPA by day and a perfectionist by night. She’s fit, successful…and decidedly lonely. She can’t stop thinking about the youngest McCauley brother, Cameron. He’s just like her: smart, attractive, and usually right—except when dealing with her.

…But Someone’s Got To Do It.

Cameron McCauley likes Vanessa a little too well. She’s a blond goddess with a razor-sharp tongue. She hates to be wrong, just like him. But she can hold a grudge and is stubborn to a fault—also like him.

These drugs have been found responsible for libido in women along with vaginal lubrication during sexual intercourse. viagra samples How much more if you don’t have viagra levitra cialis prescription of this kind of pill from your doctor? A past misunderstanding has them rubbing each other the wrong way. Cam is dying to shake Vanessa up—get her to let loose. But if he succeeds, can his heart handle it?

It took a no nonsense, tell-it-like-it-is-and-make-no-apologies type of heroine to save the day and there’s no better character to get the job done than Vanessa Campbell, CPA.

I’ve been watching her character grow over the course of the series and catching tidbits of why she is so abrasive, proper, fastidious and aggressive. She’s a fascinating woman with hidden facets that were fun to discover to their full extent in Ruining Mr. Perfect. She has the reputation of making grown men cry so who could possibly get past that prickly exterior? Why, Cameron McCauley, of course.

It’s been quite enjoyable watching Cameron’s interest get piqued by the prim and proper Vanessa. Things really heated up in How to Handle a Heartbreaker with the hot stolen kiss, but the attraction really took off in this novel and it was a fun ride. Cameron is his own man. Always has been and it has caused various emotions between he and his parents. In fact the relationship he has with his parents is one of the external and internal conflicts in the book. And that conflict is what makes this story not a standalone read. Even if a reader missed Maddie’s story, they have to start with Abby’s to understand the calamity facing the McCauley household.

Of course the best conflict of the story was watching two strong-minded individuals navigate the course of a volatile and passionate relationship and the sexy sparks and fireworks it inspired. Once again, Ms. Harte provides readers with a multitude of sensual buildup, hot and steamy encounters and the bedroom door delightedly wide open.

One of the plot conflict highlights was when Cam met Vanessa’s parents for the first time. After all of the build-up and worry and internal dialogue, what came to pass was for me, anticlimactic. It had its moments but it didn’t meet my expectations. There was something missing but I can’t put my finger on it well enough to explain. Still, it was one internal conflict thread resolved.

Another facet of this story is the humor. I really was entertained by the repartee between the hero and heroine and laughed many times throughout the book. Vanessa and Cam were awesome together.

The pièce de résistance was the wrap up happy ever after ending. It was fun, funny, sexy and highly satisfying. It was true to Cam and Vanessa’s character and relationship and it was adorable. And true to form, Ms. Harte dangled the carrot of Mike and Del at the end to hook my curiosity and interest and it succeeded. I can’t wait until the next book because of all the McCauley brothers, his is going to be the most challenging. He has expectations and once a reader meets Del, they’ll realize she is the antithesis of any woman Mike has known. It’s going to be exciting!

Ruining Mr. Perfect is a great addition to the series and a fabulous read. It’s quirky, steaming hot and has enough emotional baggage to stir things up and keep it interesting. It’s mostly upbeat and always entertaining especially when Cam’s brothers and their wives are on scene to ‘help’ the two sparring lovebirds. Readers of the series are in for a treat when they pick up their own copy of Ruining Mr. Perfect. I enjoyed myself immensely and look forward to the next relationship adventure.

Cast of Characters from In Bed With a Rogue by Samantha Grace – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Samantha Grace, whose newest book In Bed With a Rogue was recently released. Enter the Rafflecopter below to win a copy of the book.

***********
Hello, everyone! I’m Samantha Grace, author of the historical romance series Rival Rogues. It’s great to be here today at Long and Short Reviews. Recently I recalled my love for reading plays in my high school and college literature classes. Anton Chekov, Neil Simon, William Shakespeare, the Greek tragedies… It didn’t matter if I would like the story by the end—although 9 times out of 10 I did—I always experienced a rush of excitement when I opened the play and found the cast of characters. Maybe it was the sense of possibilities with each characters—what role would they play? What secrets would they hold? Would they be exactly what they seemed to be on the surface or was there more depth to them? I thought it might be fun to share the “Cast of Characters” for my newest release IN BED WITH A ROGUE and what role they play in a story I truly love.

Sebastian, 2nd Baron Thorne—hero; a rogue by reputation; jilted by the heroine in ONE ROGUE TOO MANY, whom he wanted to marry to help improve his sister’s standing in Society; son of an officer in the King’s military who was granted a barony for his service. Sebastian’s goals: Help his sister reenter Society and complete his father’s work for housing for homeless soldiers. Barriers: Gossips are spreading rumors that he is mad like his father; No lady of high standing will help his sister since they are giving her the cut direct (turning their noses up and shunning her).

Eve Thorne—Sebastian’s younger sister; abandoned at the altar 2 years earlier and her reputation suffered greatly; the ton assumed her fiancé had learned something horrible about her; spunky and resilient despite everything.

Lady Helena Prestwick—heroine; a viscountess; widow with a sterling reputation recently arrived from Scotland; has a secret past she wants to keep hidden; in London to search for her younger sisters whom she hasn’t seen since her father lost her in a card game to Lord Prestwick and he took her to his castle in Scotland; independently wealthy since her husband had no heirs. Helena’s goal: Find her sisters and provide a better life for them in Scotland. Barriers: She can’t search the fashionable brothels where one of her sisters is rumored to work because she is not a gentleman.

Fergus—Helena’s champion; he is her deceased husband’s land steward; Scottish; he is a father figure to Helena and a bit of a pushover when it comes to her; very protective.

Olive, Lady Eldridge—Lord Prestwick’s cousin who has taken Helena under her wing; a busybody and gossip, but good hearted; she caused a few problems for Sebastian in ONE ROGUE TOO MANY.

Lavinia Kendrick—Helena’s sister who is rumored to be working in a brothel.

Cora, Pearl, and Gracie—Helena’s other younger sisters.

Other characters play a role in the story, too, but these are the ones closest to Sebastian and Helena. Fergus and Lavinia are definitely favorites when it comes to secondary characters. Maybe they’ll each need a happy-ending of their own some day.

Not only do I enjoy reading plays, I love attending the theater. I had a chance to see “Wicked” onstage when the Romance Writers of America met in New York a few years ago and it was AMAZING! I kept thinking how each performer was at the top of their games. It was very inspiring for me as a writer. It made me want to be at the top of my game some day, too. Have you ever seen a professional performance of a play? Was it something you enjoyed or would you prefer sticking to movies?

She’s a woman with a secret

Elizabeth Wainwright is on the run. Accused of a murder she didn’t commit, she has no choice but to cut ties with her old life and flee West. The last thing she wants is attention, but when her stagecoach is attacked, she suddenly finds herself under the fierce protection of one of Montana’s famed vigilantes . . . whether she likes it or not.

Lawman Mitch Brady is sworn to uphold justice in the wild lands of 1860s Montana. He’s never met a man he’s feared, and he’s never met a woman more desperately in need of his help. Something’s shaken the secretive Elizabeth, but as he gets to know the beautiful city belle, he finds the only thing he wants more than her safety . . . is her trust.

She’s just eighteen and she’s already running from a man…

Ms. Bittner writes a mean western. She is historically accurate (she must have had a gunslinger in her family!) and she believes in true love. Those combinations add up to a good read. I’m going to have to go find some more of her work.

Elizabeth Wainright is going as far as she can away from her stepfather. He killed her mother and lusts after the gem filled necklace heirloom and the girl herself. She can’t stop him from taking what he wants if she stays, but she can run with the necklace and she does. She never anticipated getting caught in a stagecoach robbery. She also has no experience with the bad men of the west. She grew up in New York and that’s a long way from Montana. It doesn’t take her long to realize just what they want to do to her. All the men on the stage are dead and she’s there all alone. While she’s anticipating the worst, someone shows up to her rescue. He looks like an outlaw himself and she’s not sure that she’s in a better situation. However, he informs her he’s the local lawman. He also asks her if she’s a whore…

It doesn’t get better in town. It’s a town with few women and lots of men. Elizabeth knows she’s attractive, but she never drew much notice in New York. Here, she’s the main attraction. It’s a good thing she has the sheriff for a bodyguard.

This is a busy tale of men out for revenge as well as a story of love. Sheriff Mitch Brady falls in love with her and her with him. Her stepfather is still coming after her. He wants the necklace and plans to kill her. The wife of one of the men hanged by the sheriff is coming after him along with her ranch hands. It’s a rough world out there in early Montana.

I enjoyed the story and worried about the main characters. This author has a talent for drawing you into the story and keeping you there. I like that; it makes the book more worth reading. Now to find some more by her…
