Victoria Phillips was one of the fortunate ones, she’d won a spot in Earth’s underground sanctuary. Unfortunately, it came with Phoenix Tanner. He’d been sent to escort her to safety, but the man drove her nuts with his arrogant, annoying, sexist attitude. She was torn between kicking his shins and running her nails down his back, tracing that delicious tattoo.

She was relieved when they picked up more winners, and his attention shifted away from her. But the more time the group spent together; the more she got to know Nix… she began to suspect that the lottery wasn’t all that random after all.

It was nice to read a different idea of an “end of the world” scenario. I enjoyed all the characters, all of whom have their strengths and weaknesses. Tory is compassionate, stubborn, and highly intelligent. It’s interesting watching her as she figures out the puzzle of the lottery. The government had pre-selected those who have a high IQ and then those who would be happy to be a servant. The relationship between Nix and Tory is hot and troubled. Tory fights the attraction because her ex-husband had been verbally abusive to her. She does not trust men easily. Nix also has to fight his attraction, because it is against the rules to have a relationship between the military personnel and any of the civilians. Yet as much as they try, they can’t keep their hands off each other.

Tory is an incredibly compassionate women and takes the children they find under her wing. A perfect scene is when Victoria watches as Emma is forcibly taken from her mother. She fights Nix to see the girl and assures her mother that she would be taken care of. We also get to see the kindness of people, such as an elderly woman who gives out free coffee and doughnuts at Dunkin Donuts. Then there are the men who take advantage of the chaos, as she experiences. They are tasked to keep an eye on everyone, to make sure that no one fulminates rebellion, especially the lower class.

There is one thing that I think should have been changed. I don’t like the way the book ended. It was very abrupt, although I can see why that might have been done. It was to leave the reader in suspense and want to read the next book. To me, it was a little jarring.

All in all, a wonderful book full of great charters and an original plot. There is a hint of a mystery that needs to be solved and you are left wondering what will happen next.

An unexpected duty

For three hundred years, Princess Dria has avoided the drama of the royal court by training as a battle mage. When her father summons her back to court just as she begins to rise up the ranks, she’s furious. Even worse, she must work with her estranged brother Ralan on a mission to Earth. But as soon as Dria arrives at Moranaia’s new outpost, her brother drops the leadership of the entire place into her hands. Now she’s in charge of fortifying a new outpost on a planet she’s never even visited.

Prince Vek of the Unseelie has spent millennia as his father’s enforcer, working in the shadows to eliminate evil, but after sparing his nephew Fen from the king’s judgement, Vek must tread carefully. One false move, and he will lose the king’s trust—and Fen’s life. But when the king gives Vek a new, more sinister task, Fen becomes the least of his worries. The Moranaians have a new colony on Earth, and King Torek wants the energy source that’s contained within. Vek must retrieve that power—even if he has to kill the Moranaian leader to get it.

A threat unknown

From the moment she catches Vek sneaking into the cavern, Dria knows the truth—the dark and mysterious prince is her soulbonded. But she’s certain he’s up to no good, and although she’s drawn to him, there is no way she can trust him. His reputation, and that of the Unseelie in general, precedes him. Unfortunately, more than desire is awakening. As they dance around their budding attraction, Dria and Vek uncover a deathly illness lurking among the fae—and a sinister plot that will damage both their worlds.

The Fae have opened a new portal to Earth and it must be protected by mages and warriors. Princess Dria is given the task of being in charge of the portal and those protecting it. This brings problems, both personal and work wise, but the discovery of her soulbonded upsets her emotions, especially as she’s an elf and he’s an Unseelie blood elf.

This book and the rest of the series takes the Fae realms to another level. Even royalty in these realms are expected to use their magic for the good of their people. The different realms each have their own agenda, but various individuals unwittingly bring the Fae closer together.

The characters of this book tugged at the emotions in various ways. Like, dislike, pity, annoyance. Depends on the individual. For instance Vex, Dria’s soulbonded, has a reputation for being nasty and he definitely appears that way, but deep down he’s only doing what’s best for his people and his love for Dria also softens him. Add to this the different magic of each person and you have a book where you never know what’s going to happen next.

This is definitely a ‘can’t put it down’ type of book with plot twists at every chapter. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this.

What’s a future duke to do when the most unsuitable woman possible captures his heart?

Eden had tried to avoid even a hint of scandal her whole life.

Plowing headlong into the Marquis of Sterling and dropping eggs on his boots wasn’t the most foolish thing Eden Haverden had ever done. Imprudently agreeing to take the charming rogue home when his horse went lame wasn’t either. But reluctantly accepting Chester’s invitation to stay the night at his familial estate after she nearly drowned? Yes, that assuredly was a rash decision and invited utter ruin. So why doesn’t she listen to her common sense?

Can Chester convince Eden to put aside their families’ feud and trust him with her heart and l

Manchester (Chester), Marquis of Sterling is dragged back home as he was advised that his father was in very poor health. He has a volatile relationship with is father, since his father blames Manchester for the death of his older son, Byron. While wasting time at the inn, he literally runs into a young woman who takes his breath away. Eglantina, who goes by her middle name, Eden. She is the bastard daughter of a local gentry man, and doesn’t fit in any of the different classes; she is not quite a noble nor is she a commoner. Quite the pair, huh?

I absolutely loved the character of Eden, she is quirky and does not follow common mores of dress. She has such a heart of gold, as she takes in any stray that walks her way. She is also such a strong character, ignoring the normal way a woman is supposed to act in this time period. Chester is also a wonderful character, as he fights the temper and imprudence that haunts his family. They have not had good reputation in quite a time, and his father is not helping the situation.

The author does a great job of showing the difference between Chester and his elder brother Byron. He also had the strength to defy his father and marries for love instead of following his father’s plan. I love the interactions between Eden and Chester, there is passion and tenderness. He does everything he can to help Eden and her mother, taking them in and caring for them and the the animals that Eden owned. The passion was sweet and heated at the same time, which makes Eden fight harder. She does not want to end up as her mother. Chester is working hard to show is a different type of man.

The only thing that I wish could have been done is to make the courtship a little longer. They meet, fall in love and the next thing you know they are living together.

All in all, this was a great read with great characters and a wonderful plot line. I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re drawn into their world like I was and felt what the two lovers felt, too.

When Ace leaves home to spend the summer in Cherokee, North Carolina the last thing she expects to find is a boyfriend until she meets Cherokee Tribe member John Spears. As Ace and John’s friendship blossoms, they find their life experiences mirror each other and they fall in love. Despite hurdles thrown by well-meaning family members and jealous frenemies, the star-crossed lovers remain committed to their mutual belief that the universe has drawn them together. However, when Ace sends John a strange text and then suddenly disappears, the two must rely on their trust in each other to save both their lives and their love.

I have so much I want to say about Cherokee Summer that I’m overwhelmed as to where to begin and wish I could just say “just read it”. Similar to Nike’s motto “Just do it”.

Holy Mackerel, this book packed a punch. If a reader likes to be blown away with an unexpected surprise within a book then this story delivered, at least it did for me. There certainly was a plot thread that was unpredictable. I’m not at all sure how realistic it was given their ages but it left a “wow” impression on me.

I grew up watching Western movies and Western TV shows therefore I’ve always had the fantasy of falling in love with a forbidden Native American tribe member only for us to live our happily ever after.

I got to live my fantasy through Ace, the heroine, and John the hero. The author did a great job making their love seem real, like it was meant to be, and heartwarming.

There was depth to this story with multiple layers with intertwining characters. I was fully invested with everything that was going with each character. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. It was one of those, “it’s late and I’ll just finish the paragraph. No, wait, there’s only 3 pages left in the chapter. I’ll just finish the chapter.” Then I’d look so see how short the next chapter was. I had a hard time putting the book down.

There was drama in Ace’s family that she was dealing with and John was dealing with his own family drama and then together as a couple they had “hurdles thrown by well-meaning family members and jealous frenemies”. Those “frenemies” added to the suspense throughout the book.

The only thing that kept me from rating this a Best Book was the ages of the hero and heroine. I had to mentally block the fact that they were eighteen out of my head. Nowhere was I prepared to learn that. I just couldn’t accept that. I’m forty seven years old and I have an eighteen year old son. I would have been more comfortable with the entire book if they were juniors in college. Perhaps on the reservation on internships. All I’m saying is the age didn’t work for me. Nowhere did it say it was a young adult romance. If it did I woundn’t have chosen to read it. That is my personal hiccup.

In conclusion, Cherokee Summer was outstanding in the grand scheme of things. I was entertained, heart warmed and found a new author that I’d like to read more books from.

Lacey is a bright young lawyer with a promising career ahead of her. However, her personal life is in shambles. When Lacey’s boyfriend bails on her yet again, she finds herself talked into attending a fancy party hosted by her best friend. Lacey reluctantly agrees. She has no idea how much that decision will change the rest of her life.

Lacey is a likable character. She’s smart, driven, and genuinely wants to use her law degree to help others. However, she is prone to making rash assumptions. Since she is a lawyer, I would think she would be more open to putting off making decisions until all the evidence has been examined. Unfortunately, she makes many misguided, snap decisions throughout the story that cause her a lot of heartache.

This is extremely clear when it comes to her relationship with Bobby. Lacey misunderstands some things that Sandy, Bobby’s sister, says about him. Lacey assumes Bobby is a player who will only break her heart. Given Lacey’s past problems with men, it is understandable she would be cautious when it comes to matters of the heart. However, Lacey and Bobby spend months together. He proves time and again how much he cares for her. He is attentive, patient, and compassionate. Honestly, he is one of the sweetest heroes I’ve come across. Yet Lacey ignores the evidence that is right in front of her. Her continued insistence of pushing Bobby away went on far too long. Consequently, the pacing suffered a bit. However, I felt that Lacey and Bobby had great potential as a couple, and my patience and perseverance were rewarded in the end.

I must say I really enjoyed how Ms. McLean chose to tell this story. Ms. McLean begins each chapter with a section from the present before cutting back to the past. The changes in time period and point of view are clearly marked, and I never felt lost. Each section from the present reveals one more piece of the puzzle regarding Lacey’s stalker. As each piece clicked into place, I was able to figure out who the stalker was and what their motives were, but I still had no idea how Bobby and Lacey would find a way to be together. The solution was a bit unexpected. It was heartwarming, bittersweet, and very satisfying.

I’m glad I had the opportunity to read Beneath the Lake. Fans of time-travel romance would do well to pick up a copy!

Performing mundane tasks and catering to the ridiculous whims of the boss from hell, she sees no opportunity for advancement. Though she’s never quit anything in her life, Taylor walks out and heads home to Chicago, the city that holds her heart. With her confidence shaken and no job on the horizon, she knows she has to find herself again.

Once she arrives, she’s shocked to learn hockey player Hunter Riley has been traded to the Chicago Buffaloes. Since she’s followed his career, she knows he’s coming off a disastrous season in Houston and must rediscover his game in Chicago—or face losing his hockey dream.

Taylor worries that their budding relationship won’t survive the challenges of rebuilding two broken careers. Can the new versions of themselves fit together? Or tear them apart?

Or will love be the bottom line, after all?

I loved this book! When I read the blurb for The Bottom Line I knew I had to read it. I’d like to point out that it doesn’t matter if you read the first three books in this series or not. This was a perfect stand alone.

I LOVE hockey players. I spent my teenage years going to the games just to drool over them. I did happen to meet my husband at a hockey game. He never played professionally but he did grow up playing hockey. A funny story is that he claims he married me on false pretenses. He was under the impression that I enjoyed sports since he met me at a hockey game. He had no idea I was clueless about the actual game but I could tell you all the players names and numbers and if they were single.

The heroine, Taylor was extremely relatable. I could understand Taylor’s thought process as if they were my own. It’s a struggle to gain the confidence to try something new. Especially when your entire life was planned, goal oriented towards one objective. Then when you achieve what you worked so hard for only to discover you hate it is mind boggling. All I ever wanted was to be a teacher. I learned pretty quickly that it wasn’t for me. It took me many years to work up the courage to quit like Taylor did. I love how she turned her life around and took charge again. I only wish I had that kind of courage. Fear of failing is paralyzing. I admired how Taylor accepted the challenge to rebuild her career.

The hero, Hunter, had his own internal demons to contend with which put them at similar crossroads. Together as a couple they could understand each other and support each other which made their relationship real and honest. I enjoyed watching their love evolve. Even when they had their first fight. I especially loved their first encounter with each other. I’ve often fantasized over a hockey player making a hard-hitting play that’d break the glass in front of me. I fell in love with Hunter as quick as Taylor did. They had all the right “feel-goods” in a memorable romance story.

This was my first Aven Ellis book and I loved her writing style enough to want to go back and read the other three books in this series. I grew fond of the side characters and I googled that they have their own story in the series. I’ve never been to Chicago but I want to go now just to try a Chicago hot dog. I’m not sure if I’d like it because I’m more like Hunter with his love for ketchup.

The Bottom Line was a heartwarming and entertaining read. The bottom line for me was this book was a score!

Iceland is known for its folklore, but beyond the elves and mountain trolls, there are other creatures: beautiful, powerful, and vengeful, known as the huldufólk. Gunnar has been alive for a century, trapped by their curse after angering them. From the far flung Westfjords to the black sands of Reynisfjara, the answer to Vanessa’s missing year might be connected to Gunnar’s punishment—as well as his long-lost wife, Hera—but the truth lies somewhere in the realm of magic, myth, and love, and Vanessa has only just discovered fairytales are real.

She has no idea what happened after she left the bar the previous night, nor how she got to this place. Two local men find her and take her to their home. Things go from bad to worse when she finds it has not been a night but a year since her night in Reykjavik. Vanessa feels she is losing her mind when she discovers one of her hosts is about 125 years old. They reason the invisible Huldufólk are responsible for all their problems. Now Vanessa has to work out how to get home to America and rejoin her family and friends.

This book is very well written and captivated me when I began to read it. First it seemed to be a mystery of who had taken Vanessa and brought her to this island, but as the story unfolded it turned out there was much more to the story than I first thought. Gunnar is reserved but a spark of interest is there between them. His story of how he has lived so long seems to be a side story to set the scene, but again there are hidden depths to this. Despite her situation I liked the way Vanessa took charge of her own destiny and convinced Gunnar and his friend to help her.

I’m not going to spoil this for future readers, but the ending is totally unexpected and has a Wow factor. Definitely worth a 5 star rating.

As the war between rebels and the corrupt government reaches a fever pitch, Ace is bent on self-sacrifice and revenge, while Emlyn must choose between her heart and the future of mankind.

If humans want to survive, they’ll need to find a way to save the bees.

The premise of this book grabbed my attention immediately. I appreciated the fact that the author spent so much time coming up with logical ways in which human society would change, and even start to disintegrate, once the bees began dying off and food supplies ran dangerously low. She went into the perfect amount of detail about how crucial pollinators like these are for the ecosystem and how devastating it would be to lose or nearly lose them.

While I wanted the two characters who developed feelings for each other to end up together, their potential relationship felt out of place in this story. There were so many other things going on in it, many of which were time-sensitive and incredibly dangerous, that I was confused by the inclusion of the romantic subplot. It didn’t seem like something that either of the participants should have had much energy to think about when their lives were in danger and humanity itself could be going extinct. It would have been really helpful for there to have been more scenes establishing why these characters decided to pursue their feelings so quickly and how they found the time to do so in the middle of what was basically a war.

Emlyn felt like a real person to me, flaws and all. There were times when she said or did things that annoyed me, but then there would be other scenes where her quick thinking and bravery made me cheer. I loved the many nuances of her personality, especially the fact that a few of her weaknesses were things that actually affected the course of the plot. She was perfectly imperfect, and that’s exactly what I want to see in a main character.

Apidae was one of the most creative dystopias I’ve read recently, and I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys that genre.
