This tale includes so many characters that most of them had very little time to express their personalities or grow as individuals. Angela has a complicated backstory and nuanced personality, but most of her fellow protestors do not. While allowing certain supporting characters to fad in and out of the plot is quite realistic given the setting and nature of their lives, I would have liked to see more time spent developing at least a few of the people Angela meets at Freedom House. The little I learned about their lives and reasons for moving into Freedom House made me eager to discover more.

With that being said, Ms. Bramhall captures the strengths and weaknesses of the Occupy movements extremely well. Long-term political protests require a level of organization that is extremely difficult to uphold. This is even more true when one is committed to a truly democratic decision making process that requires the cooperation and input of a large group of people. The strongest points in this novel involve showing how this process unfolds over a long period of time when good intentions rub up against the harsh realities of daily life.

A Rebel Comes of Age is a great choice for teen and adult activists alike. I’d recommend it to anyone who has ever attempted to change the world for the better in even the smallest way.

Like so many a governess, Julianna becomes admirably fond of her charge, wicked Scottish Island home notwithstanding. Her attraction to Matthew is also undeniable – yet his own circumstances might suddenly be a little ‘beyond his control.’ Even more surprising is who he chooses to blame. Warnings come to him – veiled perhaps (like, ‘Your luck is bound to change!’ while gambling) but he never worries.

Matthew is a man of action as well as conviction. He might be a tiny a bit lacking in sympathy (we readers won’t feel frustrated with his leap to a certain conclusion only once…) but he is a towering figure and you will lose your heart to him immediately. Julianna is equally likable, just for her attitude.

I originally assigned this brilliant and fast paced read a 5. Great, gripping, fast… and I forget to write the review. 2 weeks later I find I still have recall of the story – of the characters especially – and don’t mind picking it up for a second look at all! That rates somewhere higher than a 5, I am sure – Do put this on your reading list.

There were a few pacing issues in this book. While the first few chapters set up everything the reader needs to know about how people in Maya’s society are reacting to this dangerous new disease, explaining all of the ways in which they are pretending that everything is ok does slow down the action in the beginning. I would have preferred to spend more time figuring out some plot holes that develop later on. The narrator’s understanding of why they occur is fairly fuzzy, and I never did fully understand the logic behind certain twists in the narrative.

The chilling premise makes up for the inconsistencies in the plot, especially when it focuses on how society at large responds to such a virulent illness. The Tearings sound like a disease cooked up in Stephen King’s laboratory, and Ms. Repetto’s graphic descriptions of how it affects the human body make my skin crawl.

The Tearings is a chilling dystopian novel that I’d recommend to adult and young adult readers alike. This is a great choice for anyone who feels a tickle in their throat as cold and flu season begins. Remember that it’s probably just a harmless cold. Probably.

Smitten, she takes him home only to find he’s a much more challenging companion than she could have imagined. Mahri is an easy character to like. She’s emotionally wounded, but her kindness toward Morgan shows she hasn’t given up on life or men, despite her ex-fiancé’s betrayal. I must admit I found her generosity a little naive at times—it’s one thing to open your home to a down-on-his-luck stranger, but to let him live with you and not even balk when he wants to watch you get out of the shower? That goes a little beyond generosity in my book, but overall, it worked for the story and the situation.

Morgan Felix, the shifter at the heart of the story, is also an easy character to like. When he chooses his clan over his Scottish lover, she curses him to a feline existence for eleven months of the year, which he seems to accept with a fair amount of serenity (or perhaps after a thousand years of it, he’s just learned to cope). His determination to protect Mahri from his crazy life, as well as from anyone who might threaten her, is commendable and makes him a satisfying hero to read about. Their romance develops quickly, but it is never less than involving and believable.

If I found the writing a touch clunky at times and thought that, in such a short novella, the focus could have been a little tighter, it never took away from my enjoyment of this sweet story. I would especially recommend it for any cat lovers who like their stories with an element of the paranormal.

Shiloh’s dream is to make it as a singer in Nashville. But her mother Racine made it in Nashville, made bad choices, and came home a bitter woman. She dissuades Shiloh and leaves Shiloh thinking she is not a good enough singer to realize her dream; so she sings on weekends at her sister’s bar.

Her extraordinary talent with horses, a talent she inherited from her father the undependable Clem Jameison, lands her a job with the wealthy Dillon Travers, a popular, young, but supposedly retired Nashville singer.

Trust issues for both Shiloh and Dillon create a stumbling block for their budding relationship. How they overcome conflicts and cope with the best-intended meddling of friends and family captivates.

The second novella “Mending Fences” is Starla Jameison’s story. She owns the local bar where all important social events seem to take places. She and Lee Trevors, the manager of Dillon Travers’ horse operation, have a history that goes back to their high school days. Starla’s sense of guilt and Lee’s unforgiving attitude create an uneasy atmosphere. To “hook up” is one thing but to wipe the slate clean of past mistakes and let true love work its magic is a whole new issue. They, like Shiloh and Dillon, have trust issues, but for much different reasons.

Country music, the rescue and rehabilitation of abused horses, and life around the local bar furnish the props for the love stories. Even though the plots were somewhat predictable I found THE BRIDES OF BLACK MOUNTAIN to be a entertaining escape into the world of romance with a western flavor—fun to read after a day of coping with the hassles of daily living.

Imagine discovering a newborn in a pile of trash. The idea of running across something like that is so heartbreaking and unthinkable that I was immediately hooked onto this mystery. It was even more intriguing to jump around in time and learn about what kind of person Sakkara grew up to be as well as some information about her biological parents. I made assumptions about their lives that did not necessarily correspond to who Pet and Mikey actually were as individuals, but what I did learn about them makes me want to know more.

While I completely understand Ms. Ross’ desire to pique the interest of her readers, and I believe that she has done an excellent job setting up a detailed backstory for the mysteries Sakkara will confront in later books, I do wish that at least a few of the questions posed in this piece were answered. Jumping Ship asks many intriguing questions, but due to the lack of closure for any of the mysteries that are introduced earlier on this is not something that works particularly well as a standalone piece. Even solving a small part of the puzzle of Sakkara’s origins at some point in this introduction to her quest would have earned this book a much higher rating as Ms. Ross clearly knows how to write an engrossing tale.

I didn’t know anything about Guyana before reading this short story, but Ms. Ross’ extremely detailed descriptions of what it’s like to live there made me feel like I was walking alongside Sakkara in the small town she lived in. Even clothing, hairstyles, and the scents that cling to one’s skin are described in meticulous detail, and while it slowed down the pacing of the first few scenes I truly enjoyed the author’s attempt to make every inch of her story come alive once I settled in and paid close attention to her character-based plot. This is a languorous mystery that works best if it’s allowed to unfurl slowly, and while I would have liked to see certain scenes cut to most important information a little more quickly I do appreciate the author’s willingness to paint such a vivid picture of life in Guyana.

Jumping Ship shows a lot of promise. Reading it made me curious to discover what happened to Sakkara’s birth family, and I would recommend this book to anyone who is planning to dive into the entire Island Hopping Series when it is released in 2014.

Imagine a room filled with “tourists dripping with backpacks.” As soon as I read that phrase in the first scene I couldn’t wait to find out what happens next. I would have preferred to see more character development with the man who Red has always known as his father. Eventually some of my questions about him were answered, but it would have been nice to learn more about why he made certain choices. Had I gotten to know him better this book would have earned a much higher rating.

Sometimes parenthood is a sensitive topic, but Red never shies away from asking tough questions about what it means to be a father and who should and should not claim that title. While I had ethical concerns about the manner in which his parents handled the topic of his conception, the author clearly spent a lot of time fleshing out the arguments on both sides of this family disagreement. Some of the points that are made may be controversial, but in no way is either side demonized.

The age recommendation for this piece is somewhat flexible. While the plot does contain mature themes and sexual references, the plot brings up issues that are incredibly common for people who are not biologically related to one or both of their parents. It broaches them in such a sympathetic manner that I am comfortable recommending Red’s tale to emotionally mature students a year or two younger than 16. Due to numerous references to sex I would not suggest this story to anyone under 14, however.

Boy Red was my first introduction to Ms. Everington’s work. If this is any indication of her storytelling abilities I am really looking forward to reading more from her and would encourage any fans of young adult literature to do the same. This novel is as appealing to adult readers as it is for the age group for which it was originally written.

Thea and the people she meets on her journey are strongly affected by dark, stormy weather patterns that shift from one misery to the next. I was particularly intrigued by the author’s use of fog and rain as antagonists in certain scenes, especially once the contrast between Thea’s daily life and the patch of glowing light on the girl she rescues is fully explored.

The world building breaks down once the extent of the damage to the ecosystem becomes apparent. Only a small percentage of the plants and wildlife have survived the horrific damage to the environment, and nearly all of the water supply is deadly unless special precautions are taken to nullify it. While humans could survive a short time on what little food still exists I can’t see how anyone could live on that sort of diet longterm. There are a few hints about this aspect of the plot that I would have preferred to see fleshed out in more detail. Certain scenes lead me to make assumptions about Thea’s world that were never confirmed nor denied, although hopefully the sequels will delve into this topic in greater detail.

Thea’s personal growth was a highlight of this tale. She is a richly detailed character whose strengths and faults are interwoven from the very first scene. The dysfunctional society that produced her has clearly had an impact on the sort of person she’s become, but the author balances Thea’s past with the knowledge that each one of us chooses how we treat other people.

I would have liked to see more character development from the rest of the individuals who accompany Thea on her journey. Viv in particular comes across as someone who always makes the right decisions, and as much as I wanted to like her I had trouble relating to her persistent cheerfulness no matter what is happening around her. She also acts much younger than her chronological age. Once again I suspect that the author had a good reason for writing Viv this way, but giving all of the supporting characters more time to develop faults and strengths would have earned this book a higher rating.

The budding romance also feels out of place due to how quickly it occurs. The personality clashes between the two characters involved in this subplot provide quite a bit of plot fodder early on, so it was a little odd to see that dynamic shift so rapidly as the story progresses. While I understand why they found one another attractive, it would have been more realistic to push this aspect of their relationship to a later installment of this series given what readers learn about their backgrounds.

With that being said, I am looking forward to seeing how the chemistry plays out between the characters who develop crushes on one another. Once their friendship deepens and both of them have finished growing up I expect them to make a good couple.

It was difficult to determine the best age recommendation for this piece. Most of the characters are between the ages of 16 and 18, but they interact with one another as if they’re several years younger than that. I ultimately selected the 14+ age group due to brief violence and the romantic subplot I mentioned earlier.

The War Inside has piqued my interest. I’d recommend it to anyone in the mood for a fresh approach to the dystopian genre.

Wyoming Bold is a typical Diana Palmer story where there are no steamy scenes, but a whole lot of attraction between two strong characters and the added drama of a bad guy who’s trying to end it all. There is a unique twist of Merissa having visions that warn of the danger coming.

While I called it typical, that’s what I want when I pick up a Diana Palmer story, I want a comfort read, something familiar that no matter the story I can still enjoy the feeling of falling in love in a charged atmosphere. My biggest complaint was the way things that your average reader knows from every day life were explained, basic things that I felt were extra and weren’t needed to further the story.

Dalton and Merissa are perfect for each other and fall in love in this situation that is charged with so much danger and emotion that only by believing in the power of love and their determination that no matter what they’ll work on their relationship is their love for each other believable. They are two characters I can see working together far into the future to make sure that their love comes first and are willing to fight for it.

It’s nice to read about an old fashioned couple and story that’s not fueled by sex to keep the story going. I think that’s why I recommend this and other Diana Palmer stories, because it’s nice to step back to a time where the characters and the sexual tension drives the story and not the sex.
