Her mother and father have other ideas about her future, but will her growing feelings for Hiiron interfere with her parents plans?

This is a slightly strange book, unlike most anything else I’ve read. Told in the first person in some ways it’s difficult to understand what’s going on, as we can only see things from Jim’s perspective and experience. Also, while much is alluded to throughout the story, I didn’t feel as if some things were very clearly explained, things like why – exactly – Jim found himself at this hostel, what he was running from and whether he was complicit in much of the drug trafficking and such. In some ways this felt to me like one of those “confessions of” stories, and while I did enjoy it, I spent most of the time mystified as to where the story was going, what was fully happening with the plot, and what the thrust of the plot really was. Despite this I wanted to understand, the author’s writing was quick, precise and interesting and so I continued to read in the hopes of illumination. While even upon completion I still didn’t get most of it, I didn’t feel as if I had wasted my time either, reading something completely alternative and refreshingly different.

There’s no traditional romance or erotica in this short story, the sex is held pretty much behind closed doors (there’s no graphic content to it, merely a build up to it and then declaration of the act having been performed) and while it’s clear the main relationship is between Jim and Celia, I didn’t personally find any romance between them. For an erotic short story this surprised me, but seemed to resonate with the first person, slightly disjointed, mysterious tone and presentation of the whole tale. I feel that readers who are looking for something completely outside the box and different might truly enjoy this, but readers wanting just a quick, sexy read mightn’t find what they’re looking for here.

A really different read, but still enjoyable.

Jealousy is a powerful emotion, but is everything it whispers true?

Relationships are about much more than the happy times two people spend together. Shelby and Jason have been together long enough to outlast the honeymoon period, but they’ve never had a fight like this one before. How they react to one another in the heat of the moment says quite a bit about their personalities, and I enjoyed seeing how they approach this conflict in their relationship. It’s difficult to include a great deal of character development in such a short story, but I was intrigued by the glimpses of the darker aspects of Shelby and Jasons’s personalities that are present in this one. Neither one is a saint, and I would have loved to know more about whether or not their interpretations of one another’s actions and intentions are accurate.

While I don’t expect a tale this length to delve deeply into the character’s backgrounds or what happens to them next, I would have preferred to see more time spent wrapping up certain plot points. The ending felt abrupt to me because of the author’s approach to questions that the characters ask themselves early on in the narrative.

This short story excels at capturing the smallest details of a fight as it breaks out between two lovers. It’s easy to get so lost in the moment that one forgets everything other than what is happening right this second. Dropping the reader into the beginning of the action in the very first paragraph was a good decision, and I could’t wait to see what would happen to Shelby next as soon as I began reading this piece.

I’d recommend The End of Tomorrow to anyone who has ever flown off the handle at someone they loved. It’s an entertaining, convincing snapshot of the rough parts of being in a longterm relationship.

The Only One dives into the story quickly and introduces us to Ken who has been ‘kidnapped’ by his wife’s brothers. Ken comes across as a real character, feeling the pain of separation, perhaps pending divorce. We feel more of his pain when he sees his wife working as a waitress in what appears to a sleazy bar. We’re also told that they lost a baby and as the story unfolds, begin to learn what happened from Karla’s viewpoint too.

I haven’t read any of the other books in the series so I’m not sure if these characters have been introduced before but I felt what could have been a very emotional story as they dealt with their pain, became rushed, and told rather than shown. I think had this been a longer story and more pages devoted to the theme of loss and recovery, it would have been a wonderful read.

Apart from that, the dialogue is natural sounding and the setting perfect. And if you’re looking for a quick read about a hot cowboy this might be one for you.

Sometimes the most frightening moments in life take place during what at first appears to be completely ordinary circumstances.

I highly recommend reading these stories in the order in which they appear in the book. Two of them are set in the same universe, and it’s much easier to understand what is going on in the second one if you’ve already read the first. They are also all arranged carefully by tone, length, and to some extent subject matter.

“A Night Under the Stars” send a shudder down my spine. The dark tones are emphasized by how little the reader learns about the narrator or the dangerous man who shows up on his doorstep. Normally I prefer to know more about a character’s backstory, but in this case the mystery of their identities feeds into the quickly escalating tension beautifully. The sequel to this piece, “Monsters,” revisits the narrator when he’s once again faced with a different kind of danger. Both of them work best if they’re read in order and back- to-back. This is a character who really needs to be the star of his own series of adventures his own series. The handful of information I gleaned about his personality makes me eager to hear more from him.

The first few scenes of “Offerings” are deceptively slow-paced. I did not realize it was nearly novella length when I started reading, so it was easy to overlook the subtle hints about what was actually going on because the pacing felt so uneven. This tale needs that extra time to sketch out the small town Tommy has recently moved to, though, and once the foundation is laid the rest of the plot unfolds rapidly. Ultimately the conclusion was well worth my initial confusion, but I would have liked to see a few more clues revealed a little earlier on to keep my interest in it as high as possible.

“Last One Leaves the Light Out” asks more questions than it answers. The premise is quite intriguing, and the haunting descriptions of an abandoned world will remain lodged in my memory for a long time. While this isn’t the type of short story that is necessarily meant to answer every question the reader has about what really happened, I would have like to see the characters uncover a few more clues. The final scene ends abruptly due to the nature of the information the protagonists are able to figure out.

Don’t skip the forewords that appear before each story. Mr. Felkel discusses how he came up with the idea for each one, and some of his sources of inspiration are quite unusual. While reading them isn’t strictly necessary in order to understand what’s happening, they do add depth the narrative and I found all of them to be well worth my time.

Encounters is a solid collection of stories that complement one another well. I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn’t read Mr. Felkel’s work yet. This is a very good introduction to an author I’m really looking forward to reading more from in the future.

Jason Smith is a hero any reader can cozy up to. He’s a returning soldier with scars, both physical and emotional, who wants to make things right, but isn’t always willing to face up to his painful past. Finding Kara again has him thinking about love—but forever is more than he can handle. Kara Jameson is not the same girl Jason left behind seven years ago. She has a daughter now and can’t afford to make a mistake. Their romance is a satisfying one, and I liked how the author managed a few new twists on familiar themes. What seems like it might turn into the standard secret-baby story becomes something else instead and that makes for a pleasurable experience.

I would have liked it better, though, if the author had fleshed her characters out a little more. Jason and Kara seemed rather one-dimensional and that made the story too sentimental for my taste. A few faults or a harder edge to the hero and heroine would have made them more like real people. I also didn’t like the way the author told us about the characters’ emotions rather than showing us. Various emotions rolled, slithered, pummeled, swirled, and balled up in the characters, but no matter how vivid the telling, it’s not as effective as showing. As a result, the story seemed to only scratch the surface of the characters and their stories at times, rather than bringing them to life.

Overall, though, it was still an entertaining and satisfying read. So if the holidays have you wishing for a sweet romance where a character’s heart might just grow three-sizes in a moment, then Snowbound with the Soldier is just what you’re looking for.

There aren’t many anthologies out there that attempt to blend science fiction with murder mysteries, yet this book is a solid example of just how much both genres can enrich one another. I never would have thought to mix them together, but the results speak for themselves.

By far the best entry in this collection is “Fedoras.” It’s set at a time in the future when computers solve the vast majority of the crimes that are committed, and humans are only called in for special cases. Although I never had trouble understanding what was happening, the plot is so complex that it easily could have been expanded into a novella. The characterization is especially rich, and I enjoyed figuring out Detective Stone’s background almost as much as I did attempting to solve the case alongside him.

One of the few missteps takes place in “A Murder Far From Home.” It follows the investigation of the brutal murder of a scientist who is working onboard an international space station. While the pacing was perfect, the investigator who tries to figure out what happened to her has an obvious bias against the deceased as a woman and fellow human being. His constant character assassination of someone who has just died made it difficult for me to take anything else he deduces seriously even though the mystery itself is quite intriguing.

The premise of “Downhill Slide” seems impossible at first. A man is murdered while living in almost total isolation on a work-related project. The sole suspect has an excellent reason to explain why they couldn’t possibly have killed him. What confused me about this tale was the gender of the investigator. Chris Ba has a wife and two children waiting at home, but I was never able to figure out if this character was supposed to be a man or a woman. At first this question didn’t matter so much, but by the end I really wished the answer to it was clearer because of how it affects how the reader interprets certain scenes.

“Crime of Passion” is another must-read. In it the death of a quiet, cheerful teacher living in a colony on Mars reveals some surprising secrets as Officers Jacobs and Smith untangle the mystery of a life cut short. The twist at the end is particularly clever. In retrospect I completely understand why it was written that way, but it was definitely not what I thought was going to happen. This is another entry that I wish was a novella instead of a short story. It answers all of the questions it raises, but I was so enthralled with the characters that I didn’t want to say goodbye to them.

While Moon Shot contains elements from both the science fiction and mystery genres, it leans more heavily on the latter as far as which tropes are relied up to advance the plot. Some of the mysteries are specific to conditions that can only be found in outer space or on other planets, but many others could have potentially taken place on Earth. There are good reasons why the authors in this collection chose less familiar settings, though, and their stories are richer for it.

Moon Shot: Murder and Mayhem on the Edge of Space is a fascinating collection of tales that I’d recommend to fans of mysteries and science fiction alike.

Markus is dumped the night before his brother, Jin’s, wedding. Suffice to say he was a bit of a mess for his brother’s big day. This seemingly unending day was topped off when a blast from his past bumps into him, spilling her glass of champagne all over his newly purchased tuxedo. Markus doesn’t remember the Savannah he dated in their senior year of high school to be quite this breathtaking, but he certainly wasn’t going to complain. Markus and Savannah are both going to learn nothing is easy when it comes to relationships, not even the second time around.

I enjoyed how this book moves at a fast pace. Each chapter jumps a bit forward in time, so even though the progress between Savannah and Markus is slow, it’s not a drawn-out thing, but neither do we miss any of the good stuff. We follow as Markus and Savannah get to know each other again, as Markus gets promoted and they move in together. I feel like this is an excellent blend of slow-and-steady paced romance with the thrill and speed of a more sexy read. All the love scenes have closed doors – though it’s quite clear Savannah and Markus are intimate with each other. I have to think this story could well be an excellent way for more traditional romance readers to add a bit more spice to their repertoire, without actually crossing the line into sexually graphic stories.

Part of the plot was a bit clichéd, but I loved the expansive, over-the-top manner with which Markus finally came around and was pleased there was a happy ending. This is a lovely book, both sweet and spicy enough to appeal to a wide range of readers I would think. I enjoyed it and look forward to more stories by this author.

Danger swirls around her as she steps further and further into the conspirator’s trap.

Romantic suspense is one of my favorite sub-genres and The End didn’t disappoint me in any way.

The opening got my attention and set in motion a lot of what if questions that kept me reading on. Was there a connection between Ellie’s husband’s manuscript and her being fired from the District Attorney’s office? Once the idea was planted in my head, I felt compelled to spend time reading more pages at one sitting just to find out if my suspicions were correct.

I thought Ellie was a fun character, and although as in all romantic suspense, you have mixed feelings about the hero, as in this case Paul, I hoped he’d end up being the good guy when all was said and done.

The pacing is fast and the dialogue very natural sounding. I also liked the setting of this book and that there was a hint that maybe the author has another book in mind using Ellie and Paul.

If like me you enjoy suspense with a romance, this is might be a good winter read for you.
