“First Lady Kills President Lovinggood”

If you like a good time travel story (with a twist … since none of the times in this story are contemporary — the earliest was 2018) and some sweet romance, then Blue 52 might be a good choice for you.

I enjoyed this book, primarily for the characters. While Hank and Kathryn are the main characters, Ms. Cantrell populates the book with plenty of colorful, three dimensional secondary characters. Hank’s grandfather is great, though his grandmother annoyed me pretty consistently. I loved his father, when we finally get to meet him. Definitely presidential material!

The plot is relatively complex and although even 2048 feels pretty similar to current day, there are enough things put in that the reader is made aware that things aren’t contemporary, from longer life spans to … well… time travel.

The author’s way with words is great, and it really kept me turning pages. She’s not heavy handed with description, but I could always picture where I was. The romance is sweet, and while the couple do consummate their relationship, it’s off the page.

I thought the ending was handled very well, and I was pleased at how the author handled the effects of time travel. Yes, things were changed in the past, so the future was also changed, but it all made good sense to me.

For an enjoyable read with a relatively plausible plot (as long as you can believe time travel is possible), and a sweet and touching romance, I recommend Blue 52. I enjoyed it very much and will be on the lookout for more from this author.

Jobless, practically homeless, and tired of being manless, Sophie Taylor jumps at the chance to be Beaumont Walker’s personal assistant. Six weeks on the road with country music’s bad boy–and, more importantly, his all-male crew–is the perfect opportunity to change her life.

Beau Walker doesn’t need any more distractions. Sophie, with her butt-ugly suits and balls-to-the-wall attitude, shouldn’t be one, but she proves to be distracting and more–even, surprisingly, a friend. So when he discovers her plan to snag a man from his worldly wise crew, he’s determined to protect her from herself.

When Sophie realizes Beau is behind her failure to attract even one member of his crew, the last place she expects to find herself is in his bed. But will one night of passion convince her she’s woman enough for him? Or will it destroy their friendship and his budding belief in true love?

A Song for Sophie falls into my personal hall of fame. I felt wonderful and over the moon with happiness when I read it.

This is a beautiful, delightful, flawless story of two people who would probably never meet, because they do not move in the same social circles and their interests are polar opposites. But some misfortune on the one hand and lucky coincidence on the other brought them together. It was their destiny to meet, and to fall in love. Sophie Taylor is a high school history teacher who is used to living a quiet life, that is until she became the personal assistant of a famous country singer Beaumont (Beau) Walker. But Sophie is not a doormat; on the contrary she is clever, full of wit and she knows how to deal with Beau’s moods and how to put him in place.

Beau lives a big life, on the stage and in his private life; he can be moody and he does not know what love is until he meets Sophie. Love makes both of them different, love changes them. I love the way their relationship progressed and developed and the ending is so dramatic, romantic and heartbreaking at the same time. Besides great relationship development, this story has great secondary characters who are alive, three dimensional and funny.

I enjoyed A Song for Sophie tremendously. It is so well written. It doesn’t leave loose ends and it culminates in a big satisfying, feel good HEA ending. A must read.

Verity is a such a well-developed character that I knew exactly what kind of personality she has by the end of the first scene. Her snarky, intelligent commentary on all of the unexpected things that happen to her after her cornea transplant lends a healthy dose of skepticism to her experiences. The fact that she doesn’t immediately adjust to her surroundings makes a lot of sense given how violent, unpredictable, and sensual this new world is, although the inclusion of these scenes makes this a book that should not be passed down to younger readers.

I would have preferred to see more well developed secondary characters. So much of what I learn about their individual personalities comes from how focused they are on everything that happens to Verity. While I understand why they find her so fascinating, the idea of one person attracting so much attention didn’t always fit in with what I learned about their society. It would have been helpful had more time been spent on the difference between what the secondary characters say they value versus what they actually pay the most attention to as the discrepancy grows more distracting over time.

The world building in this book is incredible. Ms. Phoenix develops so many different species, alliances, and old, festering wounds between various groups simultaneously that I was nearly as disoriented as Verity is in the first few chapters. I was especially interested in how the author uses myths and legends from a wide variety of cultures to flesh out the narrative. They work quite well with the original creatures that she throws into Verity’s path as the plot progresses.

Haven Awakening is a wild ride that is as much fun for adults as it is for young adult readers. Why not give it a try today?

Sue Green just wanted one night to be the pretty one. But a few glasses of champagne and one wild disguise later, she’s in some serious trouble. Who knew the devastatingly handsome face of Lord Holden Ellis would get in the way of her foot? And how exactly did all that high-kick dancing start in the first place? At least she blamed it all on her new persona—Suzanna. So Society’s most eligible bachelor will never find out the truth.

All Holden wants is the truth. Who was that vixen who seduced him so thoroughly, then disappeared? The only one who seems to have any answers about Suzanna is Miss Sue Green. She’s promised to help him find his mystery woman, but in truth she’s not being all that helpful. And in truth, the more time Holden spends with Sue—witty, pretty, and disarmingly honest—the more he realizes he may have found exactly what he’s been looking for all along…

This fairy tale story captivated me from beginning to end. It was very reminiscent of Cinderella, and even included balls, an evil mother, and a sister placed ahead of her in her family’s eyes. And Like Cinderella, Sue somehow discovers an inner strength and claims what is rightfully hers, which includes the Holden the man who has been searching for Suzanna longer than either of them realize.

I was immediately smitten with this story, and did not want it to end. Sue is the oldest sister, yet she has seem to lived in her sisters’ shadow being the plain daughter–as her mother so often reminds her. With the prospects of landing an eligible bachelor almost nonexistent, she decides to throw caution to the wind and enjoy herself for one evening. Yet, that one evening alters her life forever, by introducing her to the world she has skirted on the outside of for so long. I could not help but root for Sue from beginning to end, and hope to get more glimpse of her wild side she affectionately names Suzanna.

Holden has his own secrets he must keep tucked away, or he risks not only his reputation, but a scandal that will devastate his entire family’s existence in higher society. When he meets Suzanna, she shakes up his world more than anyone has done. Now he finds himself on a wild goose chase for the missing seductress, while finding himself falling in love with the sensible and witty Sue. Holden seems to be a scamp on the outside, but I quickly realized this was a facade used to keep others at a distance. In fact, below the surface of his charm, he is a caring and compassionate man wrapped in a pretty package with a bow. This made me want to learn more about him, as well as discover all of his hidden secrets he hides so well.

The entire courtship of these two is truly fascinating and one I will not soon forget. I love how they come to care for one another so naturally throughout the story, it really added a ring of truth to the relationship. I could not help but smile sometimes at the budding relationship because it was based on genuine fondness of one another and seemed so natural. I have sometimes felt historical romances a bit outdated, but Desperately Seeking Suzanna was anything but outdated, and I can truly say I would anticipate reading this story again an falling in love with it all over.

Between inheriting his father’s business and looking after his widowed mother, Jack has always been Mr. Dependability. It isn’t always the most exciting life, but Jack finds meaning in the iron-clad routine that his community has come to expect of him. Jack is effortlessly in tune with the pulse of small town life, and Mr. Maus’ attention to even the smallest details of what it feels like to live in that kind of environment instantly drew me into the plot. No sooner did I think I had everything figured out, though, than another plot twist would appear. It was as much fun to anticipate where the author was going with his story as it was to see how someone as traditional and shy as Jack reacts to all of the unexpected things that happen to him.

It would have been helpful to have the paranormal elements of this tale explained in greater detail, especially when it comes to exactly how they influence Jack’s friends and family members. There were a few occasions when certain characters rapidly change their minds about topics they previously held strong opinions about. Had their thought processes been explained more thoroughly this book would have easily earned a much higher rating as this is my only criticism of an otherwise fantastic novel.

I was definitely not expecting to laugh as often as I did while reading My Grandfather’s Pants. Mr. Maus has a fantastic sense of humour that translates extremely well to the written word. He is adept at teasing out the funny side of even the most serious or mundane parts of daily life. It was especially entertaining to see how he plays around with a wide range of assumptions most of us make about certain groups of people in order to keep his readers on their toes.

My Grandfather’s Pants is a great choice for anyone in the mood for something quirky and original. This is the kind of book that begs to be read more than once. I, for one, will be revisiting it quite soon!

Especially since those lies have put the entire world in danger…

What could very well be the end of the world is the perfect time to take risks. If it doesn’t happen now another chance might never present itself.

I can’t imagine a more electrifying opening sentence than this one: “The sky was on fire.” As soon as I read it I couldn’t wait to see what Ms. Buckley planned to do with her characters and the dying world that no one else has been able to save. The descriptions of what happens to a society that knows there may not be any days left for them after this one were as chilling as they were intriguing.

It’s difficult to discuss my criticism of this piece without revealing spoilers, but the scenes that earned it a sensual rating felt out of place when compared to the tone of the rest of the plot. Either section would have made a compelling short story on its own, but attempting to bind a thrilling science fiction mission with what happens later on never quite gelled for this reader. I did not sense much chemistry between the individuals involved in those scenes, and that made it difficult for me to understand certain interactions between them.

The fast-paced plot kept me interested from beginning to end. Just enough information about Global Solutions and the backgrounds of the characters is provided to explain what’s happening. There were a few details I would have preferred to have more information on, but none of it is strictly necessary in order to understand what Grace is trying to do. Leaving certain questions unanswered also means that there is space for a sequel to this piece. While I don’t know if Ms. Buckley is planning to write it, I would be quite interested in revisiting these characters in the near future.

Grace Under Fire is a solid tale that left me wishing for more. This is a good choice for anyone in the mood for a quick, satisfying read.

The suffocating conformity of diplomatic life soon closes in on her. And so begins the unravelling of an ill-fated marriage, setting in motion a devastating chain of events that will bring her face to face with a past she tried so desperately to forget, and a future she must fight for.

A story of love, loss of innocence, and the aftermath of a terrible decision no one knew how to avoid.

When Sophie’s father takes a job working at the Maharajah’s palace in India, she’s ready for the adventure to begin. Little does she expect she’ll meet the love of her young life and that everything will change for her in a moment’s notice. What do you do when a spur of the moment indulgence sets the course of your future?

Sophie is a very flawed character, but that only makes her more interesting. She’s young, she’s bored, she’s a bit selfish, and she’s conflicted. Basically, she’s everything any young woman might be. It’s the way she handles her flaws that makes her so wonderful, however. To cure her boredom, she looks for adventure. To repent for her selfishness, she admits it to herself and seeks to be better. That she keeps finding herself in less than happy circumstances only gives her more chance to grow and show what she’s made of. She is a unique and fascinating character who makes you want to follow her around to see what will happen next.

I loved that this novel alternated between Sophie’s two residences in India, even if on occasion it took me a minute to figure out whether we were in the 1940’s or the 1950’s. The historical aspect was present and accounted for, but you also weren’t hit over the head with a million historical details either. You’re given enough to know where you are, when you are, and what’s going on at the time. It was a nice balance.

Under the Jeweled Sky is a love story of epic proportions, covering every love a young girl could ever have. A combination of first love, parental love, and so much more as you travel through ten years of Sophie’s life. Beautifully written and set in an exotic location only adds to the wonder that is this novel. I’d highly recommend Under the Jeweled Sky simply for the historical aspect, but the forbidden romance she shares with Jag raised the enjoyment level for me.

Instead, her agenda for the dreaded party calls for the help of her closest friend, Lady Juliet Quinn, to thwart and confound her brother’s plans by orchestrating a series of pranks meant to humiliate and confound him . . . if only he would cooperate and be the victim.

He has secretly admired Lady Juliet for several years now, but she is off limits in many ways; not only is she friend to Miranda, she is also the sister of his close friend, Charles Quinn, Earl of Bristol. Perhaps the biggest obstacle is the tiny problem that Lady Juliet has vowed to avoid marriage, wanting no part of the typical unions of their set based on convenience, money, or titles and lands.

With nothing at the party going according to anyone’s carefully laid plans, and most of the guests participating in their own plots and schemes, the final prank yields even more surprises. Whatever is a duke to do?

Lord Love a Duke is the first book in the Regency-based Lords of Oxford series, stories about the lives and loves of a group of five peers of the realm who met at university and formed a fast and lasting friendship.

A silly prank will have some serious consequences.

Jonas only wants what is best for his sister and to him that means seeing her happily married, but she has other plans that don’t include marriage, at least not yet. I thought Miranda’s logic was flawed. Miranda wants Jonas to stop interfering with her life and let her make her own decisions. Instead of sitting down and talking with him like an adult, she decides to play all sorts of childish and humiliating pranks on him. I found it very surprising that Juliet would agree to help Miranda. Juliet is a much more serious woman than Miranda. Rather than going along with Miranda’s schemes, I would have thought she would have tried to talk her friend out of them. However, I will say that Miranda’s pranks made for some hilarious moments throughout the novel. When the final prank goes horribly wrong, Juliet finds herself in a situation that will change her life forever.

Juliet and Jonas are definitely an interesting couple to watch. They have admired each other for years, but have kept their distance for several reasons. Juliet and Jonas try to convince themselves that they are satisfied being friends, but the house party keeps them in close contact with each other. I really enjoyed their teasing banter. Juliet and Jonas are perfectly suited to each other, and I could easily picture them spending their lives together. As they spend more time together, their feelings for each other intensify and it isn’t long before others begin to notice. One of Miranda’s pranks puts Juliet in a rather compromising position that threatens to destroy Juliet and Jonas’ chance for happiness. Can another prank help Juliet and Jonas confess their true feelings?

I really enjoyed reading Lord Love a Duke. Miranda’s antics are very amusing, and Juliet and Jonas’ romance is touching. Their happy ending is well deserved and absolutely beautiful. Fans of historical romance would do well to pick up a copy of Lord Love a Duke today.

Well written, with a fascinating and unusual premise, Champion of Sherwood grabbed my attention from page one. It is the story of Robin Hood’s Daughter and grandchildren and the mysterious and magical Sherwood Forest. There are still problems with the Sheriff of Nottingham and his men. The people are still being victimized, and are fighting back. This leads to many of their homes being burned and villagers slain.

There is a circle of three who are guardians in Sherwood Forest. The magic there keeps them safe and they do what they can to protect the people. When they are no longer able to provide this safety, the guardianship passes on. The next three will be the two daughters of the daughter of Robin Hood and her husband, the present guardians, Lark and Linnet, twin sisters. The third party will be a young man named Falcon. His father has been the third of the guardians till now.
The villagers raid a group of the sheriff’s men, returning from collecting taxes and kill all but one, who is the nephew of the sheriff. They hold him and plan to ask for ransom for him.

As I read I became so involved with the story, I found it difficult to put down the book. How they fight to protect the village, and how they resolve the situation, if only temporarily, is done so well, you have no doubts as to the magic surrounding them.

I was with the every moment while the story progressed. This was similar yet much different than the Robin Hood story. It is different in that the nephew becomes an important part of the solutions.

I really loved this story and would highly recommend it. I plan on finding book one in the trilogy and then the next ones as they are written. Definitely a series and an author to watch.
