The opening of this book pulled me in with its car crash and Agatha stealing a baby. I had hoped that the mystery behind her taking the only survivor would continue more but in the next chapter the baby’s all grown up and called Jacob.

I won’t give too much of the plot away but Jacob and a co-worker go and work in the US and it’s there that the mystery starts to unravel. Jacob’s had visions his entire life and it’s at his new destination that he learns of their meaning and the significance to him.

Ms. James did a great job with the setting. I could visualize this part of the US and Jacob’s road trip. It seemed like she’d done lots of research not only on the area but Native American culture and tradition too which made the book enjoyable.

There are a cast of characters all nicely drawn, and of course a romance that Jacob hints about early on in the story. The dialogue is natural sounding and at 157 pages the story moves nicely especially if you’re looking for something to read in two or three sittings.

If you’re eager to find a book with a little suspense, enjoy books set in the Southwest and love learning about other cultures along with your fiction, this might be a good pick for you.

It was most definitely not the introduction to this tale I was expecting. Not knowing what was happening made me eager to find out more.

I would have liked to see more character development, especially when it came to Harry. He experienced a few different traumatic events growing up that never quite had as much of an affect on his personality as I would have expected. His dazed reaction was completely understandable in the beginning, but this book would have easily earned a higher rating had the author spent more time exploring what happens when Harry’s numbness wears off. It would have been especially interesting to see which, if any, of his negative personality traits stem from this emotional paralysis.

Strong pacing from beginning to end made it hard for me to put this story down. I really liked how the author embedded crucial clues about Anastasia’s background into scenes that also had a lot of other exciting stuff going on in them. At times it felt like I was watching an action movie instead of reading a book. This was a smart approach for such an action-heavy plot.

Catnip is one of the most adrenaline-inducing tales I’ve read so far in 2014. This is a good choice for anyone who likes being perched on the edge of their seat in anticipation of what might happen next for 200+ pages.

The horror elements took a little while to show up, but they were quite noticeable when they did. It was interesting to see how this author sampled the often gruesome origins of traditional fairy tales in order to make her story come alive. Masque of Shadows is truly intended for a mature audience. Given the dark subject matter, this was a great decision.

Once or twice I wondered why Estelle accepted all of the strange things she encountered so easily. This is a minor criticism of an otherwise mesmerizing book, but it would have been helpful to know a little bit more about her previous life in order to better understand why she was so eager to jump into a dangerous, new realm without any qualms about her own safety.

The villain in this piece was perfectly dastardly. I was especially creeped out by the physical description of him. It was a little unusual for this genre. In retrospect, it worked incredibly well given everything else the reader learns about him and his plans for Estelle.

Ms. Miles has a hypnotic writing style that made it impossible for me to tear my eyes away from the page. She described each scene in such precise detail that I felt as though I were watching a movie instead of reading a short story. This was my first introduction to her work. If it’s any indication of her talent, I don’t know how I’ll be able to remain patient while waiting for her next book comes out.

Masque of Shadow is a must-read for anyone who loves fairy tales. Just don’t be surprised if you follow in my footsteps and read it more than once!

It was fascinating to see the relationship between Jade and her father develop during the course of this tale as he wasn’t part of her daily life in the first book in this series. Her connection to his side of the family hasn’t always been that strong, so she has a lot to learn about them. There is plenty of unexplored territory between them, though, and I hope that this series will spend even more time exploring this part of her life in the future.

A few chapters were written from the perspective of a secondary character. The first time it happened I was surprised, and when it happened again I wondered why the author made the decision to show her audience these scenes from someone else’s point of view. The secondary character has an interesting perspective, but the story would have been stronger if it had only been told from Jade’s point of view due to how much scarier some scenes would have been if I’d known only what she knew.

There were a few plot threads in the first book that never quite found satisfactory endings in it. I was pleased to see them picked back up again in the sequel, especially when it came to a romantic relationship that I found bizarre due to how the individuals in it knew one another. While they technically weren’t breaking any laws, it was cathartic to finally have this topic addressed in a more realistic manner.

The most important details from Ever Near are briefly alluded to from time to time. There have been some major changes in Jade’s life since then. Readers who are familiar with those adventures will discover a few surprises along the way, but it’s not strictly necessary to understand all of those references in order to enjoy this sequel.

Ever Lost was a wild ride. Anyone who likes ghost stories should give it a try!

The Return of the Rebel is second chance story told from the POV of both main characters. The characters are likable, although I preferred Cleo over Jax. Cleo is much stronger character than Jax. She knows how to take things into her own hands in order to get their happy-end. I expected that Jax would be more alpha rebel, but actually he was just a boy from the wrong side of the tracks.

The story is interesting and it flows nicely and both characters change and grow by the end of it and all issues raised are resolved nicely. It contains a bit of suspense but it is not romantic suspense novel.

The Return of the Rebel is great summer read.

Anja’s strong personality and tendency to say exactly what on her mind threw me off at first, but I soon grew to appreciate her preference for simple, clear communication. She isn’t necessarily the friendliest forensic engineer I’ve ever met, but there was something irresistibly intriguing about her self-confidence and dedication to her work. It seems that this is the beginning of a new series, so I’ll be interested in seeing what cases she tackles next.

This plot is jam-packed full of characters. In something full-length it would make sense to introduce so many people who only have a tangential relationship to what was going on, but there were a few too many of them for a short story of this size. I had trouble keeping all of the characters straight due to the large number of them.

With that being said, the mystery itself was fun to unravel. I’ve never read anything in this genre about arson or insurance fraud. It was a nice change of pace from the typical murder plots I normally read in this genre. Exactly enough clues were provided to give me a good idea of what might happen next, but I was still surprised by how the author tied certain things together.

I’d recommend Fire Sign to anyone in the market for a creative spin on the mystery genre.

Ms Stone introduces the heat of passion and the frustrations which come from this passion in a very intriguing manner. Add to this the danger of being in the middle of nowhere with the enemy coming closer and the tension builds to breaking point. Most steampunk books are set in Victorian England so one set in historic America makes a pleasant, fresh change.

Nicely done Ms Stone, the controversy between hero and heroine kept me reading with interest.

Maggie and John are likable characters, but I must admit it was a little hard for me to gauge the chemistry between them because they don’t actually spend much time together in this short romance. Most of the plot is about them trying to reach each other. After I read this story, I learned that there are two other previous short stories that feature these characters. I believe reading those stories will help readers better understand Maggie and John and their situation.

There is never a dull moment in Maggie and John’s world. All of the plot complications surrounding Maggie and John’s quest to be together are resolved in quick, yet satisfying ways. I was a little surprised at how things turned out at the ballroom competition. To say it was chaotic is a massive understatement. However, Maggie and Johns reunion is very passionate and certainly well deserved.

I enjoyed reading A Torrid Tango. It is a fun, fast paced story that can easily be enjoyed in one sitting. Readers who enjoy over-the-top plot complications and romantic endings should certainly give A Torrid Tango a try.

The setting is wonderful and well described by Ms. James. I liked Karen and Tris but I think the other secondary characters kept me interested just as much. All are well-rounded and have interesting personalities.

The plot is very entertaining and when someone begins blackmailing Karen I couldn’t put my e-book reader down. There were late night meetings in churchyards, escalating threats and all things that make a great suspense. I won’t give away what happens to the blackmailer but I thought that perhaps the incident would up the suspense just a tad more but it didn’t, which was a bit disappointing to me.

I was cheering for Karen, but actually more for Tris because he came across as sweetheart of a husband who seemed to go to any length to protect his wife from dangers of the past.

Although this is close to a 300 page book you’ll find the pacing fast because of its page turning quality and your need to find out what Karen’s fate will be.

Summer’s still young and if you’re looking for one more title to add to your beach book pile and love suspense, I’d recommend this one to you.

While I’m not opposed to the idea of two people instantly being attracted to one another, it was hard for me to understand why these particular characters fell in love when they knew nothing about each other. Their personalities and interests were quite different from one another. I don’t expect as many details from a short story as I would from a full length novel, but seeing them discover more similarities over the course of a few conversations first would have made their blossoming love more believable.

The villain in this tale is deliciously frightening. Other characters discuss him for a while before he shows up, and the anticipation of seeing what he’s actually like kept me glued to the page. I learned enough about Elias to understand why everyone was so anxious about him. The scenes that included him were my favorite ones, though, and I looked forward to every single one of them.

I’d recommend Of Fire and Roses to anyone in the mood for something paranormal and romantic that most definitely is not actually a paranormal romance. This a unique twist on themes that are common in both genres, and I, for one, am glad I read it.
