As soon as I read the opening scene, I couldn’t wait to learn what would happen next. A funeral definitely isn’t a typical setting for a young adult novel. It was a good choice for this one, though, as it made me eager to find out what was going on. My first impressions of the characters who attended it were as accurate as they were entertaining.

The title of this book was confusing to me. There were plenty of follies to go around in the plot, but none of them belonged to Jessamine. She was no more responsible for her parents’ death than she was for her reduced station in life afterwards. I never did understand what the author was getting at with this particular title and would have liked to know more about why it was chosen.

Jessamine’s temper problems made me like her even more than I might have otherwise. She came across as an incredibly proper woman for the time and place in which she lived. It was nice to see how she behaved when she wasn’t on her best behavior, though, because it made her so relatable. Sometimes a flaw can seem so large that it’s impossible to imagine what life would be without it. This part of her personality was written well.

It would have been helpful to have more character development in this tale. Everyone other than Jessamine tended to be portrayed in two-dimensional ways. The other characters were either written as good and kind or selfish and cruel. There was little room on either side for the complex emotions, behaviors, or motivations that I would have preferred to see.

Amelie, the young woman that Jessamine is hired to chaperone, was a highlight of this story for me. Her sharp sense of humor made me smile more than once. I especially enjoyed the scenes that involved Jessamine’s conversations with her. Their friendship was as warm as it was genuine.

I’d recommend Jessamine’s Folly to anyone in the mood for something romantic and historical.

Gillian is a unique main character. She seems anxious, yet dedicated to the cause at opening, yet we also see her from other points of view. “Baroness Gillian Chauncey had become resourceful, cunning, and ruthless.” Interesting though these other glimpses, are, some abrupt leaps between points-of-view and shifts in time are distracting and annoying.

The plot twines well with the history of the times. The political matter, Their cause, is motivating, important but not presented in an overly complex manner.

Simon is wonderful.  He takes charge so quickly, obviously admires Gillian — but more, he admires her courage; and he is the one who recognizes her danger. With so much going on, survival alone might seem an achievement, but we readers find ourselves hoping for the romance in spite of all the challenges.

Although Katherine Bone’s historic romance My Lord Rogue offers all the right elements, it is also quite different from most romances set in the time. More than just romance readers will enjoy this one.

In Duncan Jamieson’s and Sophie Shaw’s case, loving and trusting each other seems dangerous because they started out as competitors for the same plot of land. Neither can be sure the other’s feelings are genuine and not a ploy to get them to lower their defenses and let go of their plans with the land. But the current situation is not the only thing that’s making them cautious and distrustful.

Both Duncan and Sophie have a painful past filled with loss and mistakes. Sophie’s struggle with the loss of her teenage son was written beautifully. Her pain, regret and guilt were visible in her every act, but the author didn’t let the character get lost in the overwhelming grief, instead she’d given her coping mechanisms that helped her come back to life, step by little step. Similarly, Duncan’s less than model family life still haunts him years after his wife’s death. He is doing his best to become a better person, and as a reader I appreciated that the transformation didn’t go smoothly and that he was struggling with the changes instead. It made him feel a real person, and that in turn made it easy for me to feel with him as he progressed from a workaholic into a devoted father and partner.

Although the plot stalled a bit towards the middle, the hurdles in Sophie’s and Duncan’s way made the story interesting, keeping me guessing about what was next for them. Jamieson’s family secret tied in nicely to the development of their relationship and didn’t feel like a separate subplot at all but like something that affected them both deeply.

I liked the portrayal of Trent and would love to read more about him. He seemed a conflicted man, his attitude a direct result of all the hurt from his childhood. But he also seemed like someone who would be fun to get to know better. I loved his layered characterization. Same goes for Sophie’s friends, Jay and Sophie’s father – all compelling characters that added a lot to the story and shed new light on the main characters and their deepest feelings.

Although a bit predictable, the story unfolded to a satisfying finish for Duncan and Sophie. After going over many an obstacle, they learn to trust each other, which enables them to truly embrace the feelings they have for each other. Trust doesn’t come easy, but once earned, it can be a firm basis for true love. Share the Moon is a romance in which the characters must first learn to love themselves in order to be able to love each other. It’s more than just about falling in love; it’s about overcoming grief and disappointment and growing into people worth loving.

He can only fit two events in his busy schedule to make her acquaintance before their wedding.

Soon, gifts begin to arrive for Marcia, not from the duke, but a man just identifying himself as her admirer. At a ball, the mystery man finally approaches her, but in a way that she can’t clearly see him. However, she can feel him, and his kisses. More gifts arrive, and more secret encounters occur. Marcia is smitten by her secret admirer, though she has yet to actually see his face. Eventually, she meets her fiance, who appears just as arrogant and condescending as she imagined. He takes his time strolling across the floor to meet her, and shows no particular regard, acting almost bored, and very highbrow. How can she possibly wed this man when she is falling in love with another? I found myself not liking him overly much.

Marcia has a choice to make. Her mystery man has offered to whisk her away before her wedding. She’s found her heart’s desire, but how can she live with ruining her parents’ hopes? I give Marcia credit for recognizing the damage jilting a duke will do to her reputation. She’s kind enough to care about how this would affect her parents. The mystery man has been clever enough to appeal to Marcia’s desire for adventure, as well as to her emotions.

I enjoyed this quick and delightful read. Though short, the story was detailed enough to let me get to know the heroine, and feel her anguish over duty versus romance. And though a mystery, the Admirer was very appealing. He also made me wonder just exactly what it was he was hiding. The twist at the end leads to a satisfactory happy ever after, and I guarantee it will leave you smiling.

My favorite passages in this tale went into detail about what Lily can and can’t do with her gift. As someone who had never heard of psychometry before, I was glad that the author spent so much time showing how Lily uses it. None of the explanations slowed down the plot at all because they were so embedded into everything else that was going on. Psychometry sounds like such a cool ability to possess!

There were some things I never understood about Edgar and Lily’s relationship. In certain sections it’s written in ways that made me think those scenes were intended to be taken as grand romantic gestures, yet I was surprised by how much Edgar wanted to be in control of everything that happened to Lily. It struck me as a little over the top given how well she’s managed this lifetime so far. I would have liked to know more about her reaction to this part of his personality as it’s not something that I’d find endearing if I were in her shoes.

This short story weaves mystery, romance, and science fiction together seamlessly. I really enjoy reading books that are comfortable mixing so many different types of fiction together. When its done well it brings out the best in every genre that’s represented, and I was pleased by how the author chose to bind everything together.

I’d recommend Amethyst Refrain to anyone who is in the mood to dabble in several different genres simultaneously.

Naturally, I was not surprised that their courtship was far from normal. As I began the story, I looked forward to finding out how these two stubborn characters would find their way to each other. However, I was pleased to discover that underneath Pembra’s prickly exterior is a woman with a warm heart who cares not only for her family, but also anyone in need.

Greyston’s reputation is tarnished, but I liked that he never denies it or tries to pretend he is something he isn’t. He is always honest about his feelings and what he hopes for in a relationship with Pembra. I think it takes a lot of courage for Greyston to be so open about his feelings in the face of such a strong-willed woman.

Initially, I found the squabbling between Pembra and Greyston entertaining. They are both willful, but they clearly have chemistry to burn. However, the bickering never seemed to end. Greyston is very patient and shows his tender side occasionally, but Pembra is always quick to squash it immediately. She never gives him a chance to prove what kind of man he is, and she is more than willing to believe the worst about him at every opportunity, and yet when Pembra is presented with a real threat, she fails to recognize it.

Greyston is not innocent either. He teases Pembra relentlessly and then has the audacity to be surprised when she is upset. Pembra and Greyston’s antagonizing behavior just became too much after a while. At times, it was hard for me to see why they found each other attractive in the first place, and I seriously began to doubt that they should be together. They never have any civil conversations with each other, let alone one of substance. When they finally did start to treat each other like human beings, it was almost too little too late, in my opinion.

Even though the path to Pembra and Greyston’s happy ending is rough, the resolution to their tale is very satisfying. I won’t spill the details, but the circumstance that finally brought them together is very fitting considering how Pembra chooses to spend her free time.

Overall, I enjoyed reading Miss Remond’s Deception. Readers who enjoy a heroine with a sharp tongue on a rocky road to romance should consider picking up a copy today.

The same goes for the suspenseful subplot that was intense enough to keep the reader guessing and reading for more clues, but not too exaggerated to drown out the romance aspects of the novel. The two were very nicely connected and worked together perfectly. Even though my knowledge of drugs and medical procedures is very limited, the mystery plot wasn’t hard to follow. It was simple enough to understand without any medical knowledge, but intricate enough to make it spine-tingling suspenseful.

Obviously, Bree and Sam were wonderful characters that I couldn’t help but fall in love with, but the rest of the hospital staff was very well-written, too. The nurses, some of which were at first glance shown as ignorant, lazy or standoffish, were then introduced in such detail that they appeared like real people with real problems and hopes and histories. Sam’s and Bree’s families, too, were an integral part of the story and although they were not the sort of characters I would identify with, their personalities were shown in a way that made them feel like people with authentic motives and a logic behind their actions.

The closer I got to the end of the novel, the more I wished it would never end. I wanted more of the delicious attraction between Bree and Sam, more scenes that so clearly showed how deeply Sam loved Bree, more of Bree’s heartbreak because she thought she could never have Sam … But unfortunately, the novel ended…and I wanted more!  I’m very glad I had the chance to read it.

In mysteries, characterization is often neglected because of the suspense taking the limelight. Not in this novel, however. I was amazed and charmed by the vivid characters, all so unique and so wonderfully painted in just a few lines. A lot of the characterization was done through dialogue, with characters uttering a sentence that I would immediately recognize and say: ‘That was so Clair.’ Or ‘No one could say that but Mike.’ The author writes the dialogues masterfully, always progressing the plot or revealing something new about a character, but never bogging the story down by info dumps. Wonderful!

The romance was subtle and real, painful and passionate. All the best things wrapped up in the relationships of Claire and Mike and Tony. The hero, also doubling as a car racer and murder suspect, is not the classic, cliché hero. He is a man with faults, big ones; but Claire is a woman with a big heart that hasn’t felt love and passion for too long. He thaws her doubts and objections. She experiences heartbreak again, but also love and devotion. As a reader, you come not only to understand her, but to love her because she feels as real as your best friend.

The pacing of the novel was perfect, not only when it comes to the murder investigation, but also with the romantic relationship. It felt very natural and believable. It also added to the suspense of the main plotline. I liked how the motives for the crime lay in the past and how they were tied up with Tony’s childhood and his memories of his parents. The personalities of the side characters all added to the motives and the tragic events of the story. There were no coincidences or loose ends.

With Claire giving us a glimpse at the architecture of New Orleans, I wished for even more descriptions of the city and its culture.

I’m very happy I had the chance to read this book, and I will certainly buy the other two books of the trilogy.

But as Jack and the highwaywoman enter into a swashbuckling game of cat and mouse, uncovering an intricate web of fiercely guarded family secrets, the last thing Jack expects to have stolen is his heart.

There’s nothing like a highwayman robbing a carriage to kick off a story and that’s how this one begins. In this book highwayman’s a young woman, and yes, I know it’s been done many times before, but it never gets old. Well, at least not for me.

The scene was slightly humorous and you find yourself cheering on the highwayman as soon as she draws her weapon. Cora is a character I liked from the beginning, even when she was breaking the law. She’s got a valid reason and it’s not just to line her own purse with other people’s money and belongings.

Jack is also a likeable character and from the beginning he knows he wasn’t robbed by a man which keeps you reading to find out if and when he’s going to run into Cora and if he’ll recognize her.

I liked the dialogue in this story which I thought was fitting for this time period and the historical detail was well presented. I also like that there’s sort of a story in a story. Jack thinks Cora might be somehow related and that’s when the sub-plots kicks into high gear and keeps you reading on.

The secondary characters were also well rounded and seemed to have their own story too. Despite its 250 plus pages, it’s a fairly quick read.

If you like historicals, and like me especially look for ones set in England during the 1700s I think you’ll find this an enjoyable read.
